Ive been playing modern for a while now, and Ive gone through a few decks in the process trying to find something worth playing. Ive played UWR Control, Assault Loam, 4C Gifts,
and BW Tokens. Ive now am at a point that Im not sure what to play. Jund, Twin, and Pod are all so good, but expensive to get into. It honestly makes me kind of sad that Ive yet to find something that performs at my local tournaments.
Anyone have any opinions on what to try next? I was thinking about Scapeshift, or maybe Mono U Tron or UR Delver.
Either that or trying to tweak my 4C Gifts to be a little better. I can post my list if anyone is interested in that. Any opinons on what my be a deck that could go on the up and up, or something that you think is an underrated deck that should be given a go. Money isnt a huge issue, I am just unable to obtain and Goyf or Bob. T_T
My problem with American Control is I was having a lot of trouble with twin matchups. There's quite a bit of twin, pod and affinity with a few jund players in my area.
The twin matchup was difficult because even though I could stop the combo from landing I had no way of dealing with the beats from resto angel and colonnade. Sure I have my own colonnade but is was usually subject to some kind of removal upon stand up. That and by the time I had have enough to stand it I'll have eaten lots of bolts and helix to tank my life total.
Affinity just ran me over, too much of an explosive start for me to handle, especially on the draw.
I guess I'm just looking for ideas on where to go next. I really like the gifts combos, I just feel like it's not quite enough for what I'm against without perfect opening hands.
You may want to look into a few videos online of how to play American Control. Affinity's worst match up is American Control and UR Twin is also a good match for UWR control. The twin matchup you are talking about is most likely the Shuan McLaren UWR Control list and not a twin one.
He plays American twin, so that may be what you are referring to. I couldn't win no matter how hard I tried to. I've played many games with him and couldn't get a single win. Maybe I need more practice. Or maybe I just need a better sb, I'm not sure.
seems hard to believe you have problems with creature based deck:
lightning bolt, lightning helix, electrolize, cryptic command, wraths effects, path to exile, snapcaster...
if you lost to UR delver/twin because of life totals, play more helix, if you have problem with affinity, play cheaper removal.
this deck is very flexible.

I guess, I feel as though a full board wouldn't make a huge difference. Iay give it another go, still trying to decide if I want to do that it get into another deck entirely.

All ideas are welcome
you drop URW, gifts and loam because of bad matchs? unable to get cards (goyf in loam for example)? bored?
why you want to play those decks, are they fun to you? have good MU against you meta?
URW is a great deck that can win almost any match, the problem is you have to be good at reading the meta since it has not has an "unique" decklist.
i say stick with URW and practice a lot with that.

This was my deck list
3 Arid Mesa
4 Celestial Colonnade
2 Hallowed Fountain
2 Island
2 Mountain
2 Plains
1 Sacred Foundry
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Steam Vents
2 Sulfur Falls
4 Tectonic Edge
4 Snapcaster Mage
1 Vendilion Clique
other spells 27
1 Anger of the Gods
3 Cryptic Command
3 Electrolyze
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
4 Mana Leak
3 Path to Exile
2 Remand
1 Spell Snare
2 Sphinx's Revelation
2 Ajani Vengeant
None of those spells aside from path deals with resto angel or deceiver exarch. I would literally lose games because of those and burn.
Unfortunately I didnt have a full sideboard for the deck. All I had was one of each Timely Reinforcements, Spellskite, Supreme Verdict and Engineered Explosives
