My friend had one a few months ago when I was still playing casually, I loved it and loved the idea of it, it also used my favorite Planeswalker, Venser. I'm now getting back into the game and am going to be playing Modern, because I don't care for having to update my deck yearly, really. Moving on, I LOVED how the deck played and how control based it was, and how you are able to just use Venser to re-use your creatures detainment abilities. It also seemed pretty budget compared to a few other decks I was looking at. I'm really only looking to play at locals and such for now, so if that helps judging the decks viability or not.. If it is, where should I start? Wasn't exactly sure to go with this question, a few other forums I looked at hasn't had a post in months.
Probably not. If you posted a deck list I could be more specific, but detain and venser shenanigans are not really modern viable. There are a couple decks that pop up every once in awhile that abuse things like Revellark and Stonehorn Dignitary with Venser, the Sojourner that may be something you could look into.
Is anything with Venser shenanigans viable? My other friend just went 8/2 the other day with his blue white deck, I can't remember the names of the cards but they all revolved around exiling themselves and coming back into play for their effects to be used again, then gets Venser out and hits his emblem and proceeds to exile everything. Pretty sure Dignitary was one of them. I'm just wanting to find a deck that's rather consistent and can still be used in a relatively competitive matter, so any suggestions on any deck like that would be great. I suppose I don't HAVE to use Venser :L
Casually they are. You could try a modified bant pod list from MBS-Inn a few standards ago. Or if you want something more current or competitive you could try taking a UWR list and slotting in a couple Venser/Stonehorn Dignitary while taking out some of the burn elements. In particular the current list running Wall of Omens/Kiki Jiki/Restoration Angel is pretty good for blink shenanigans. http://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/236412 is where I would start if you were going to go that route.
For a casual deck I'd recommend try to bounce or flicker either Stonehorn Dignitary or Lavinia of the Tenth so you can get their triggered effects repeatedly. Lavinia detains more than just creatures, too. (Nonland permanents up to 4cc)
The drawback of such a deck utilizing this kind of slow control is that it tends to be neither fast enough nor resilient enough to do both jobs without failing at one of them.
A.Save you from damage, and
B.Find, and then keep the necessary conditions in play long enough to win.
But don't let me talk you of it - if you believe in the deck's potential, keep at it!

Those Scalding Tarn's are just a tad bit pricy...
In addition to the cards mentioned by genini2, you might take a look at Cloudshift. Prophet of Kruphix and Kiora, the Crashing Wave could help you get to the mana you need while tricky stuff with Hidden Strings and Invisible Stalker could come down earlier in. It's an interesting concept, but I wouldn't want to run it in a competitive event. Ghostly Prison makes a good defense.
