Welcome to the Modern Metagaming compilation thread! In this thread you will find lists of the best cards to hate on a majority of the established decks in the Modern format. Each deck has it's own spoiler, with multiple lists for various aspects of the deck one might want to combat. For example: If the deck runs a graveyard strategy, there will be a section for Grave Hate cards. If the deck runs a land based strategy (such as Valakut or Tron), there will be a section for Land Hate cards. You can find several card choices for each type of hate you wish to establish against a specified deck.
How to use this Thread:
Feel free to use this thread as a means to find answers to decks your archtype or brew has particular problems with. If you find that Affinity/Robots is a problem deck for your build, then all you need to do is peruse the Affinity/Robots list and pick the cards that best fit your deck. Test the various options presented, and when you go to your next tournament, sideboard the ones that work best for you!
The following is a list of specific things you can hate on, and the decks these strategies are good against.
These cards are specific towards restricting your opponent's ability to search their library. This can have a steep impact on decks that use fetch lands, and other searching mechanisms.
Scapeshift/Valakut
Melira Pod
Kiki Pod
U/W Tron
RG Tron
These cards specialize in exiling play sets of a card that could be a potential combo piece. By removing one of your opponent's combo pieces, you can effectively shut down their entire game plan.
Scapeshift/Valakut
Melira Pod
Kiki-Pod
U/W Tron
RG Tron
Splinter Twin
Living End
The following cards work against an opponent's mana base, restricting their ability to play their spells. Some decks are highly dependent on their specialized mana base, especially if man lands are a key win condition.
Scapeshift/Valakut
Jund
RWU Control
U/W Tron
RG Tron
Infect
This list of cards all specialize in removing cards from graveyards. Some decks rely on their graveyard for a resource, for which we should be prepared to face.
Jund
Melira Pod
RWU Control
URW Midrange
Living End
This list of cards all have effects that can potentially clear the board of all creatures. Several decks rely on creature based strategies, which these cards are particularly effective against.
There are other cards that are good against various decks and strategies as well, although they are a little more narrow. Take care in picking what works best for your problem match ups and plan for your meta.
Basically, if you want to open packs to get cards for Standard and Modern, the simpler approach is to just buy all the singles you need and then set some money on fire to make up the difference.
Liliana, kozilek and toughzise should be under UWR control, too.
Lingering souls hardly does anything against any uwr variant, they are designed to beat that card.
Rest in peace, relic, or any other form of GY hate also should be a pain for uwr decks to deal with.
Thanks guys. I will be making more additions asap. At work currently and it's rather difficult to find time to maintain this list while having work to do.
-Timely Reinforcements is actually a very strong card against UWR midrange. It buys you 6 life and trades with a geist and snapcaster unless they waste removal on the tokens. It's convient at 3 cmc since it won't get hit with spell snare as well. Naturally, it's good against Zoo, RDW, and affinity as well.
-Shadow of doubt is a strong reactive card against Gifts, Tron, Birthing Pod, and Scapeshift.

Most of these strategies rely heavily on activated abilities, so suppression field is generally excellent, and certainly maindeckable in the right deck.
Aven Mindcensor is a good card to bring against R/G Tron, because it makes it far harder for them to find their Tron pieces. It is true that sometimes it can come down a little late, but it really can hurt them sometimes.
Just as an FYI, I think UW Tron sees more play than U Tron. UW Tron got played by both Gerry Thompson and LSV at GP San Diego while I don't ever recall U Tron getting played competitively. You know me as a UW Tron player and I fully believe UW Tron is just outright better than U Tron. Repeal as creature removal just doesn't work.
I've updated the list by breaking down specific kinds of hate into categories for each deck. This should help make it easier for people to choose which tools work best for them against specific strategies. Eventually I am going to get around to re-constructing the verbatim part of the post as well.
Souls Sisters/Martyr Life should be a deck on this list.
It may not have major competition success to back it up, but it is a budget deck that performs well in LGS situations that people will see on a regular basis.

To be fair, Thoughtseize is pretty good against any deck, and I'm not sure that is what this thread is going for.
While Pithing Needle can shut down Platings, I'm not sure it's even in the top 6 or 7 of playable affinity hate.
Lingering souls hardly does anything against any uwr variant, they are designed to beat that card.

Ranger of Eos
How is Ranger of Eos an answer to anything other than not having creatures in hand?
When will you be allowed to get to 3BB before you can answer affinity?
Not trying to pick on anyone, just that some of these "answers" in the thread are a bit unrealistic in my experience.
The one that springs to mind for me is Echoing Truth against anything with token swarms. Twin comes to mind here.

So Ranger of Eos is the tool that facilitates strong play against affinity? Mmmmhmmm..... Sounds like a good card to play against affinity to me.
