With Modern PTQ Season just around the corner, it seems like a good idea for us to increase the number of games we play in a competitive environment as we gear up for those big tournaments. There is something to be said when playing in a tournament vs playing for fun. It seems more exciting when you are playing to progress in a tournament. I do like to play in some form of competition, and Modern is by far my favorite format right now. Unfortunately there isn't much in my area to play Modern competitively. Trying to get another tournament similar to Lantern's going seems like the best bet.
First and foremost, if you feel that you have time restrictions that might not enable you to play in both the IQ and the Classic, by all means play in the Lantern IQ. I am not trying to persuade people to play in my tournament over his. I would rather people just play as much as they feel they have time for, and the last thing I want to do is steal his thunder, so to speak.
Rules
- Modern format rules apply to game play and card pool (this includes set legality).
- Rounds will be won by the first player to win 2 games.
- Signups will start the second Sunday of each month, to give all in the Lantern IQ time to get their first round played. Signups will be due the following Saturday at Midnight EST.
- Brackets will be posted the third Sunday of each month.
- It will be double elimination, with winner's and loser's brackets. Finals will be the winners of each bracket.
- Players will have 1 week to complete each round.
- The tournament will go on as long as it has to. This means at times I will be running 2 tournaments.
- Top 10 players will receive points based on rank (winner receives 12, then 2nd-10th will receive 9-1 points respectively). Rank is based on match win %, game win % and opponent game win %. 1st and 2nd will be based on the Finals results.
- At the end of the year, the top 16 point earners will compete in the Modern Classic Championship.
Signups
- Signups will start the second Sunday of every month, and end the following Saturday at midnight EST.
- You must have Cockatrice downloaded and ready to play.
- You must post your intent to play in the tournament, complete with your Cockatrice user name and deck code.
- You must submit a decklist to me, via Private Message prior to the end of signups. If I don't have a list, you don't get to play.
Playing
- Once you know who your opponent is, it is up to you to contact each other and arrange a time to play.
- Once you have arranged a time to play, post in this thread so that other players can try to make time to witness your game.
- Allow spectators to view hands and set password for your match to "Classic" so that spectators can assist in game play. This will allow players to chime in when something, such as a missed Dark Confidant trigger, goes awry.
- If no one else can vouch for your results, both players must report.
- The loser of each match will be bumped into the losers bracket, provided they have not lost a previous match at that point.
Additional Info
I will be updating this post with more information as details are worked out. At this point you should expect it to run very similarly to the Lantern IQ, with the exception of the tournament being double elimination, which also means that the tournament will likely go on for a longer period of time. Quote from shamelessly stolen from Lantern IQ »
COCKATRICE and its Legal Battle:
Currently cockatrice is having a legal battle with hasbro. As such we will continue as planned, on a different server.
The host is: play.woogerworks.com
and the port is still 4747
When the connect dialog pops up, change the host category to the one above, and you will need to make a new account to be a registered user on that server. I don't know the link to where you register off hand, but I will try and find it.
How to change Cockatrice to: play.woogerworks.com.
1) Open the Cockatrice program as normal.
2) Click to connect and wait for the "Connect to Server" box to appear.
3) Type "play.woogerworks.com" into the "Host" box (where it currently reads "play.cockatrice.de")
4) Keep all other details the same (Port: 4747. Username, etc.)
5) Play MTG.
At the end of the year, the top 16 players will compete for the 2013 Modern Classic Championship. Any invites for players who cannot attend will be given to the next highest ranking player in the league.
In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.
Question regarding Gatecrash. If someone would like to run Gatecrash cards can they? Assuming the deck lists are due before it is out but the first matches must be played before just after it comes out will it be legal to run Gatecrash cards in your list?

This is one of those things that will differ between the IQ and Classic tournaments. Cards are only going to be legal if they are Modern legal. So you cannot use "new" cards if the set has not been released.
I will also be working on refining a few rules and beautifying the OP. Expect there to be a point system for top placed players. This will be more of a traditional standing based on match win %, game win % and opp win %, with another tournament at the end of the year for the players with the highest number of points. I haven't quite figured out the details as to how many points for what placement, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up about what to expect coming down the pipeline.
Additionally, I am going to post my Cockatrice info for the first Classic:
I'm willing to give 3 points to the winner, 2 to second, and 1 to 3-4th. Wild card points I mean. It will help out the race a bit too make it more fun. Lower amount given as it isnt the official IQs and all, but Id like to give more shots to get into the Burning Pumpkin Brawl
I am planning on having a separate tournament at the end of the year. Just kind of convenient to start in January. Points will be distributed for an undetermined number of the top players in each tournament. This will be a league style where you can earn points for each tournament, and then the players with the highest totals will face off to be the 2013 Classic Champion! I still have to work out the math and find to find what will work best, but that is my general idea in a nutshell.
I also have no qualms about Lantern handing out extra points to the Burning Pumpkin Brawl to the players in the Classic tournament. However he wants to run it will be up to his discretion.

I think it's super freaking cool. You guys are gonna love it.
Though it's up to Lantern, of course.
Anyway, most likely in this tourney. Not sure what I'm playing yet. (Likely the same deck as the IQ if I lose my round 1, something else otherwise.)
Ok cool I'll hop in on this then. I don't have a decklist quite ready but my userid is chronocidist.
