A while ago in the Legacy forum there was a thread about the cards that defined and had the most impact on the format. Some great discussion ensued and most argued that Brainstorm was #1. Anyway I'd like to do the same for Modern. So, if you'd like to participate, please list what you think are the top 5 most format defining cards in Modern (not necessarily the most powerful in a vacuum but the cards that impact the format the most) and your reasoning for each. To start, here's mine:
1) Birthing Pod- This card is an absolute powerhouse, and I think to truly appreciate its power one must play a Pod deck and see for themselves. Basically allows answers to all kinds of situations, and enables powerful combos. If a resolved Pod is not answered quickly, it usually creates too much card advantage to overcome. Just a true all-star.
2) Snapcaster Mage- UWR decks are very powerful right now in Modern, and Snappy might be the biggest reason. Sees play in both UWR midrange and UWR control, and is quite possible the best card in both decks. Another great card advantage engine and just a great card overall.
3) Lightning Bolt- It's a staple in so many decks that not including it in the top 5 would be a crime. Zoo, Jund, UWR, Burn...every aggressive deck benefits from playing Bolts. So versatile, and so efficient.
4) Dark Confidant- In a vacuum probably the best creature in Magic. I have him at 4 because Jund is no longer as dominant as it once was, but I feel strongly that Bob is the best card in Jund, and that the deck wouldn't be competitive without him.
5) Urza's Tower and brethren- With all the great cards in Modern, picking the 5 best is really though. I feel pretty strongly about the top 4, but choosing number 5 was really hard. In the end I decided that the success of Tron decks meant that they should have some representation on this list. I tried to think about what the best card in the deck was and realized that the Urza's lands themselves deserve the spot, as any version of Tron wouldn't function without them.
So, there's my top 5. I'm pretty set on the top 4, though not necessarily in that order. The exception being Pod, as I'm pretty sold on it being #1. Choosing the 5th was hard as there were so many options out there...Deathrite, Goyf, V Clique, Geist, Scapeshift...the list goes on and on. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's lists, and hoping for some great discussion to ensue.
I agree with your list but I feel like Liliana of the Veil deserves a top 5 slot. This card enables so many decks and sees a lot of play. The best Plainswalker in Modern IMO. Karn is only around because of one successful archetype. Liliana is in many successful archetypes and many on the up and up. I would switch her for Bolt or B. Pod. and rearrange the order accordingly.

So your top 5 is basically Jund staples and nothing else? If those were the top 5 cards wouldn't Jund be winning literally every tournament?
Also I don't think any walkers belong in the top 5. Liliana is good no doubt, but I wouldn't say a true format defining card. She is flat out bad against many decks, and sometimes ends up just being a 3 mana Cruel Edict. There isn't a walker in Modern that is akin to Jace in Legacy. Liliana is good but definitely not top 5 material in my opinion.
I also can't justify putting DRS above Bob. DRS is good but Bob's power level is unmatched by any of the other Jund cards IMO.

I'm going to shoot a little differently here then just naming staples in the top archtypes. While some of these make an archtype, they arent so all incuslive to every deck or colors.
Honorable mention: fetchlands-shocks. Its more of an interaction, then a single card, but this would be number 1 if it could. Its the backbone of modern mana.
Tarmogoyf- Hes a beater, but didnt make top 5 because he does basicly the same thing for every deck hes in. The other 5 have different roles in different decks. this doesnt make them more powerful, but does mean they raise more lines of play than him.
Vines of vastwood/apostle's blessing these cards inables all in combos and aggros, basicly blanking removal spells. Infect, elementals, zoo, affinity, ect have used it to push through. with out this card, they would have never been able to exits (well the all in combo decks)
Bloodmoon/Man in the bloodmoon- Punishes greedy mana bases and just blantently wins sometimes. Since the GBX shell calmed its greed a bit, and deathrite still fixes mana for them, its no longer on the top 5
Giest of St. taft- this is close to top 5... but the meta has shifted a bit from him. Hes no longer as good as he used to be, with all the clasm effects in modern. Hes still fantastic, and really enables giest of st win... but hes not all inclusive as the guy who took his place at number 4 spot.
Top 5 time.
5. Restoration angel- It used to be worth more, but other creatures and cards on this list took its place. that being said, it still sees play as a bunch of different uses. Its used in tempo, control, midrange, even combo. Twin and pod both use it to combo out, but also can use it defensively, and aggressively should they need to.
4. Snapcaster mage- What can I say? Hes got a very good role to fill, and fills in many others. He snaps things to replay them and provides a body. But that offers a lot of lines of play. Combo decks like scapeshift use him as scapeshift 5-9. Twin uses it as extra removal and stalling. Control uses it as an eventual win con and removal/counter. Tempo plays it as long game, and aggro uses it as doubled burn. Snapcaster... does alot by just snapping and casting.
3. Thoughtseize- the card has enabled many decks to defend against combo, while still ripping peoples gameplans up forever. Yes, its most known for being paired with a BG shell, but it sees play in any tempo deck running black, verious combo decks as a way to protect the combo, and even aggressive decks like Zoo and Affinity to shift a combo game in their favor! The card is a defining one in this format because when keeping a shakey hand against a swamp, you suddenly thing "What if he thoughtseizes this, and suddenly my ok hand is awful?" It's presents makes you question yourself.
2. Deathrite Shaman- Lets just get it over with. He's your reason to play a BG/X shell. He does more than any creature printed. with the combined abilities of Birds of paradise, grim lavamancer and Savaging ooze... he should cost a wopping 4 cmc. Instead he is 1 cmc of flexable mana. Some cards in the GB Shell comes and goes, but he sticks around in as a 4 of. He even enabled decks that didnt exist before, or powered them up. Look at what he did to gifts or domain zoo? And yes, he gets it over lilianna, as any deck with her, also has deathrite. Same goes for the whole B/G shell, deathrite makes it the powerhouse it is.
1. Lightning bolt. To put this card any lower is an insult, this card defines the format. Even cards that fail the bolt test and are put into decks because they pass the bolt test by another means. Look at memnite or Burning-tree Emissary, it enables things and is worth failing the bolt test for. Decks splash for this and dont use other cards, like merfolk. It pulls in decks that would rather be other colors (control being w/u/r in this format over esper). When building a deck, bolt is always in the back of a builders mind in this format, thats why its number 1.
This format literally can't exist without the fetchlands so I have to include them as one card. You could say shocks are #6 but without fetches to grab them, just not as good.
This is probably the route I'd go, too. Bolt makes this list in any format in which it's legal, and removal is always format-defining, because you have to consider it when choosing your creatures/permanents. Goyf and DRS are kinda antithetical to one another, so they kinda make for bookends. I like it.
2) DRS - Mana dork, Lavamancer, Lifegain, and GY hate for one mana is crazy.
3) Snapcaster - Enables both versions of UWr.
4 and 5) Splinter Twin/Kiki-Jiki. I wish they weren't this high, but with the banning of eggs, these cards are represent an entire third of the aggro-control-combo dynamic. If there were other options for combo, I'd probably put Path to Exile and the Fetches here.
Lantern, you make a really good case for Bolt being number one, and I can't really argue with that.
I'm pretty puzzled however that you don't have Bob on your list. In terms of pure power level Bob is the strongest card in Modern. When he is in play you are drawing twice as many cards as your opponent which is just an absurd amount of card advantage and if he sticks for more than a couple of turns you're so far ahead it's crazy. Yes DRS is a great card no doubt, and very versatile, but none of its abilities come close to the power level of Bob. Also, Jund was still a pretty good deck before DRS but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a deck without Bob. You mentioned that DRS is a staple in black decks but Bob is in all of those decks as well.
Put it those way: if you could only choose one of Goyf, Bob, and DRS to put in your deck what would your choice be? For me it's Bob no doubt.
So, for those of you who didn't include Bob, I'm really curious to hear why.

I did think about it, and he probably should have been honorable mention. He is used in the bg shell, some rare burn, some rare zoo, but thats it. While generating CA, he doesnt fill the same role in our format as deathrite, who sees play for a bunch of different decks. He generates CA, while restricting your deck to lower its curve. As awesome as that is, it isn't mulitpurposed as the other cards I listed.
Basicly I was trying to pick format defining cards, cards that appear in force in many decks, and threaten. Confident does threaten to take over a game, but I don't think hes as format defining in lines of play as the others i listed.

I can see where you're coming from. I agree that Deathrite is a lot easier to throw into a deck than Bob, since Bob does require some building around in that you have to make sure your average CMC is low enough for him. Maybe I'm overestimating Bob's power, although I have yet to lose a game in which I've stuck him for more than a couple turns. I'm sure you're a much better and more experienced player than me though so I should probably just shut up now :p.

haha, not at all. Confidant is gross when left out there. But I just think out of that whole shell confidant does less then what shaman enables.
There's a pretty clean cut for me- I can't think of any card as ubiquitous as one of these that I feel defines the format. Formats are defined more by their answers than their threats.
My #1-5 includes Birthing Pod, Lightning Bolt, Path to Exile, Thoughtseize, and Deathrite Shaman. #1 would probably be Bolt or Thoughtseize.
6-10 would probably include 'Goyf, Snapcaster, Restoration Angel, Dark Confidant, and Urza Lands. #6 would be Snapcaster. I would rate him higher but if Thoughtseize, Bolt, and Path weren't in the format...he'd be less than stellar. Those cards (along with Remand) make him crazy. Confidant and Urza lands are lower on the list because there are tons of situations where they aren't that great (Urza's lands are only great when you get all 3 different ones together and aren't disrupted... the mere fact you need three makes them lower on the list because they aren't powerful individually- it's together that they can get out of hand.)
