Modern Sunrise Combo (Old Primer)

  • #505
In the mirror match, I thought of putting in Disciple of the Vault, but someone noticed how they could still combo with Sunbeam Spellbomb. Do you guys think it's still a good board card? How many people run a singleton Sunbeam anymore?

    -Yawg

PS- I am running 3 Silence and 3 Angel's Grace. Is 3/3 good for those cards?

Would you mise a lone halimar depths?
    Cool
  • #507
No, never. Its ETB'ing tapped just kills the tempo of a 14-18-land deck like ours. I tried it in 16-land UR Storm, and the experiment failed badly.

Darn, I should write up something about KCI (the card).
  • #508
    To elaborate on Halimar Depths:
    1) You spend the first 3 turns dropping lands and eggs. If you use ETB tapped lands, you have fewer eggs to cast. This affects your chance of fizzling.
    2) Attempting to destroy Halimar Depths with Ghost Quarter and getting Depths' ETB effect when you Sunrise is pretty pointless because you'll be drawing the top 3 cards of your library when you crack eggs anyway. It hardly matters which order you draw them in.
  • #509
Im not saying its awesome, but you can crack your ghost quarter if you dont like what you see there by shuffling your deck.
  • #510
AVR brought us a new egg: Abundant Growth.
    Pros:
Draws a card upon ETB (other 1 mana eggs draw when they die)
Fixes colors (it'll be needed if you're playing UG and intend to get UU for Reshape)
    Cons:
Not an artifact (i.e. not Reshape fodder)
Requires a sac outlet (e.g. Ghost Quarter, Greater Gargadon)

I think a re-look into the Lotus Cobra build is in order. You can maindeck Seal of Primordium and use it to blast enemy A/E like Rule of Law, or destroy your own Abundant Growth and Ichor Wellspring.
  • #511
I'm not sure about it. You'll always have to keep a land untapped when doing second sunrise to even get the mana fixing part of it, and that seems slightly inefficient. Maybe as another draw spell, but that just seems like overkill in most versions.

I dislike using Seal of Primordium or any artifact/destruction spell in second sunrise instead preferring to use either Wipe Away or Echoing Truth.

Avr also brings us Laboratory Assistant, which doesn't fix mana but it does chump Afro decks. We also have Reforge the Soul, which I can think of several situations I'd love to hardcast mid combo. I will never miracle it in this type of deck.

Alchemist's Apprentice is just a bad Elsewhere Flask, in that it isn't an artifact and draws when it dies instead of when it ETB.
If you're planning on playing Reforge the Soul try Faithless Looting first.

Personally, I didn't see anything that would replace anything in either version of the deck from this new set. Gotta love Blink effects...

Anywho, this is my new board, what do you think? (I'm still running the original, non-KCI deck)

    SideboardMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards
    3 Angel's Grace
    3 Silence
    4 Echoing Truth
    1 Disciple of the Vault
    2 Defense Grid
    1 Grafdigger's Cage
    1 Pithing Needle

I took out Mindbreak Trap and just went with 3 Angel's Grace / 3 Silence. Grafdigger's Cage is there for Pod, because it stops them from tutoring, AND comboing with persist guys. Granted they can just kill off the cage if they draw an art kill, but remember: this deck wins or loses by turn 5 at the latest. I just think its great to tutor up with Reshape if need be...

Hey everyone. I am relatively new to Eggs, and as such pretty much copied the KCI decklist. Anyone have any suggestions for changes, as well as how I could better adept it for a legacy setting? My friend is dragging me to a legacy event on sunday.
  • #518
For legacy, there are the original eggs, like Darkwater egg for the two mana cantrips, as well as Archeological Dig. Artifact lands are legal as well.
"If I accept you for who you are, I am your enemy. Friendship comes when one crosses the line of acceptance and into the life of that person and aides them in ways both known and unknown. Growth of an individual is a sign of a good friendship."

? Well, eggs is pretty much dead in legacy since 2 things happened:

    1) cunning wish.
    2) mystical tutor was banned.

So yeah, you either have to run a weird creature base to marginalize diabolic intent's drawback, or play 4LED and 4Infernal Tutor and then pray you have both, OR... you suck it up and play an extended version of the deck, making use of seat of synod, reshape, and going back to helm for a storm kill (i guess).

Let me look up something comparable though, if you wanted a peek of the older lists to get an idea...

edit: oh crap! My old post o.o http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?4705-Discussion-Sacred-Guide-Second-Sunrise-Combo&p=107105&viewfull=1#post107105

Well, that's a good place to start too... just ditch the mystical tutors for other search, ditch the skycloud for darkwater (if you go with a black tutor), and the reclaims/wraiths are now noxious revivals/gitaxian probes. Nothing you do is gonna get this deck to be the resilient turn 2 combo deck it used to be without mystical tutor and pre-exile cunning wishes.

I think i actually linked this thread at one point, but here it is again i guess...

A little late, but my 2 cents:
KCI is too costly for Legacy IMO.
Transmute Artifact becomes Reshape 5-8. Actually, scratch that, Reshape becomes Transmute Artifact 5-8. It might not even be necessary to use Transmute Artifact or Lotus Petal when there are so many "sacrifice this to make mana" permanents (Tinder Wall, Lotus Petal, Crystal Vein, Archaeological Dig).
Green Sun's Zenith is not banned. Abuse it with Tinder Wall and Xantid Swarm.
Silence can be replaced by the "strictly better" Orim's Chant. Well, it's strictly better as long as your opponent doesn't use Swerve or Commandeer

Force of Will is your worst enemy, same as any other non-Storm combo deck.
  • #521
^yeah, orims chant and chain of vapor in the SB is legit. GSZ would be a great idea, if not for the fact that 4x tinder wall 4x lotus petal tends to be enough mana for the deck by themselves. Any more non-drawing manarocks, and your manabase starts getting a little crowded. I've always advocated 2-3 horizon canopy + 4 crop rotation to help with that, since being able to daisy chain city of traitors is a great way to produce mana, and rotating into either that or horizon gives you the choice depending on your needs. So, if GSZ IS in the deck, it might be as a split WITH the tinder walls themselves. One good case for 4GSZ + 4tinder wall would be diabolic intent, so you can have a target to sacrifice. You'd possibly drop the lotus petals, but I'm not quite sure on this.

This is getting weird though, since this thread is not for discussion of legacy.

If you manage to find a suitable replacement for mystical tutor, go ahead and just make a thread in the legacy subforums. After scouring the cardpool for that replacement for so long, I'm really all out of ideas for a workable legacy version, to be honest. Good luck.

    edit -
fuga: well, thats a bit difficult. The last time I was tweaking a deck of that sort, it didn't turn out like I thought it would =\
Here's a stab I took trying to incorporate it with KCI for kicks...
Just a quick list I threw together, untested.

    edit 2 -

well, fuga, in case you were wondering, i played out a goldfish or 2 with a tweaking of the above list and got an interesting result from a turn 3 combo that used pretty much every trick possible (whether useful or not) to illustrate what the list can do (except for transmute artifact -> helm of awakening, which is bangin and only UU off of a wellspring). I'm too lazy to condense it down from cockatrice readout but here it is as well as the tweaked list (also - i keep my non-sunrisables in the exile pile, so that's why you'll see something there):

    edit 3 -

I'm actually starting to have fun with this terrible "might as well be naseam tendrils" deck. Was thinking grim monolith could make it in there =P

Hey, why discuss a legacy deck in this thread?
  • #524
    moving on...
I think it's been long enough, does anyone have something I could put in the matchups section? "soon" seems like the wrong word at this point...

I believe either the stock eggs list or the locksmith list are the ones you're looking for.

Just 3-1'd a daily with my original list: http://mtgstats.com/Deck.aspx?DeckID=479933

was wondering if anyone had any tweaks to suggest. I really haven't changed it at all in about 9 months. Also, there is nothing more satisfying than a hive mind player casting Gitaxian probe on you and seeing angel's grace. =)

How has the 3/2 split of Elsewhere Flask and Ichor Wellspring been? I personally did the reverse just cause Wellspring is such a nice draw with KCI and even without it still draws without hurting my lands. Also maybe Gigadrowse over Early Frost? It has a bit more utility than Early Frost and dodges Spell Snare.
