I participated in a PPTQ for Modern over the weekend (with Burn, obviously). It was my first PPTQ, and I made Top 8 with a 5-1 record! I have gotten alot out of the posts here, so i felt it was time to pass it forward with a little report of my own! My list will be below. I forgot how to correctly format it, and cannot find where to go to learn, so if someone would like to do that, I have no problems with it!
Creatures(the beats)
4 Wild Nacatl
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
1 Grim Lavamancer
1 Bedlam Reveler
Sideboard(the others)
3 path to exile
4 destructive revelery
2 lightning helix
1 grafdigger's cage
1 relic of progenitus
1 deflecting palm
1 searing blaze
2 ancient grudge
Round 1: Blue Moon
G1: Honestly, this game in one word: Obliteration. Complete and Thorough. I was on the draw, didn't matter. 8 mins, including shuffling.
G2: See game 1, add hat my opponent had a dispel and a negate, still didn't matter.
1-0
Round 2: Merfolk
G1: Close, he got a master, and that was that. Not terribly one sided, however. Felt pretty fair, even with it being a bad matchup. (in my mind)
G2: Out paced him on the play, had a blaze and a nacatl(shines in the matchup). Fast and aggressive, he couldn't handle the pressure.
G3: Both of us mulled to 6, I kept a risky 6(i think 3 lands?), and so did he. He just drew better, tbh. Good fair games, wasn't too upset bout the loss
1-1
Round 3: Burn
G1: On the draw, but I pulled ahead at the end, and outplayed a stack for the win here.
G2: His hand was actual gas. 2 Blaze for both my dudes. Perfect hand basically.
G3: I was very aggressive, had a guide, awesome hand. Really interesting interaction though for the mirror here I want to make sure everyone is aware of. Had him at 6, swung with my guide, revealing kor firewalker. He goes to 4. He untaps, slams firewalker, then casts a spike, setting himself to 5. I have a command in my hand. I untap, draw my 3rd land. I fetch basic, casting command wit modes that he can't gain life and bolt him. He gains one in response goes to 3. My last card was a spike to close it out. Felt very techy of me, lol.
2-1
Round 4: Scapeshift (with Titan)
G1: Close, but I got it very close before he had the combo.
G2: Fair game, but he gets me for exact lethal off a Titan. Little mad, but whateves, i get the play next game lol.
G3: See game 1. I was a little more aggressive then he could handle.
3-1
Round 5: Burn
G1: He wins the roll, and we all know how G1 goes at that point, right?
G2: I got it off the back of awesome hand.
G3: Kinda stole this game. I had the path for his firewalker, and had a lavamancer to control his board as i ripped him apart with spells. 2 different turns he should have been able to kill me, but i guess he drew jank. He probs should have got it.
4-1
Round 6: R/B Midrange
Before the game, I checked my standings, and my tiebreakers were bad, so I had to play, unfortunately.
G1: I had seen this deck in a previous round. Kinda grindy like jund, but takes less damage off it's lands. also mains Vampire Nighthawk, and Blood Moon. Kind of a brew, but he was doing pretty well i guess lol. I got G1 after a hella long grindfest. We were both hellbent for a couple turns, he just couldn't find action. He double THoughtsiezed this game, which I found questionable.
G2: He had a both for my guide, another one for the eidolon, and just had threats. He had a great hand for the matchup.
G3: This hand was actual Godlike. T1 nacatl, T2 Nacatl and Rift bolt suspend, T3 Command plus bolt. was just a massacre honestly.
Top 8 Round 1: Grixis Shadow
G1: I get it after burnng the crap out of him EOT with a shadow in play.
G2: I had the kill next turn, but he had exacties with a shadow plus the rage.
G3: THIS IS A MAJOR LEARNING MOMENT FOR ALL NEW BURN CHILDREN. PLEASE READ. Game was going pretty well, all things considered. I'm at 14, he's at 2. He has a Shadow in play. I cast Eidolon, thinking I've got it wrapped. He says it resolves, I [ass the turn. He starts to pick up his card for the turn, then stops. He turns to the judge and asks if he can cast something in response to the eidolon. I say no way. Judge says yes, since nothing in the gamestate has changed or whatever. So he taps a red, and casts a gut shot, putting me to 13. I'm mad at this point(am I wrong?). He attacks wit the shadow, putting me to 2, then casts a Gurmag Angler(a 1 of in his list.) He passes the turn. I was hellbent at this point, and thought I couldn't cast a spell cause my own Eidolon. I draw for the turn, it's searing blaze. I have an uncracked Foothills in play. I could have won. The simple way to do it is attack with the eidolon. It must be blocked. I then cast the searing blaze after fetching to 1. I however did not see this. I scooped up my cards too early. I was tilted at the judge, and it affected my play. Needless to say, I was pissed. So ya. Lesson learned and all that.
Hope you enjoyed the report!
Few Notes:
1) Nacatl is great. I personally love it, and will always include 4 now. Party Cat is fantastic, and i believe others have detailed why on other pages of this forum.
2) Reveler is terrible. Didn't cast him once. Boarded him out in most matchups. I will probably remove him for the 4th blaze or the 2nd lavamancer.
3) I didn't pack firewalkers, and regretted it. I got real lucky. Almost a necessity with some many mirrors and Zoo macthups.
4) If you want a sideboard guide, i can try, bur I didn't get to right any of them down, so it may not be entirely accurate.
5) I love all y'all hooligans on this page!

Bedlam Reveler is indeed terrible in Burn. i tried 2 in my Mardu Burn this weekend. coun't cast it a single time. i think to run it good we need to trim the number of creature... to 8-10 including the 2-3 Reveler. (we might need to cut the monastery swiftspear, may be more to make it playable) Bedlam Reveler might also only be playable in a dedicated delver deck with a lot of can trip.

Was that the head judge that made that ruling? The game state had significantly changed since the eidolon resolved. I can't fathom a level 2 judge ruling that way. Either way he should be reported.
As far as Bedlam Reveler goes, you absolutely have to limit the number of creatures to make it viable. I ran it as a 1 of in Jund with 4 Eidolon and 4 Swiftspear. It did it's job as well as it could. Casting for rr is nice, and easy to do with only 4-8 other creatures. I'd say we'd have to run eidolon as a 4 of, and then 3 Bedlam Reveler, with no other creatures, to make him work main board. I think he serves a fine purpose against Jund/Junk, maybe even Zooicide. Anything that makes you discard, he is golden. I feel like a Sideboard slot would be good, but you'd have to board out some Creatures when you bring him in. He shows potential against Countermagic as well.
His synergy with Lavamancer is awful. I can't imagine them playing nicely together.

When Bolting the Bird is incorrect, it's not necessarily a bad play.
1) T1 Bird lets them curve out more efficiently. Bolting it is correct.
2) They kept a land light hand because of Bird. Bolting it is correct.
3) They need the Bird for color requirements. Bolting it is correct.
4) They kept a land heavy hand with Bird. Bolting is incorrect, but it doesn't matter because they kept a weak hand.
it depend of the matchup and your hand, imo its not always a good play to burn the bird. to always killing the noble hierarch, on another hand, might be a good play (cause they are annoying as ***** )

Hey Burn players, what's your opinion on Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet? I'm kind of using him as my go to card against Burn. I play Grixis and find burn super tough to beat. Is he a legitmately good card to use against you or is he easily dealt with/played around? Thanks in advance.
He is a must deal with. The only problem is he is somewhat slow, not being able to attack until t5. With the counter spells and discard available in grixis, it shouldn't be too difficult to allow him to swing. We have to kill him before he can start swinging in, plus he can stonewall most Creatures in burn.
He's part of the reason I have a Terminate in board. Naya will bring in PtE to deal with him.
So in your guys' opinions, what is the best creature to put in place of guide until i get 3 more? I used 3 of my 4 guides as trade fodder when they were high to help a friend out who was in need of stuff his LGS didnt and would never have.
Tried piloting Burn a month or two ago to poor results (most likely due to my inexperience), but now I want to return to it. My meta is overflowing with Tron and Infect, with a good showing of Dredge, and I've been told Burn is a good way to combat them. My decklist is below: what would you all suggest to fine tune it? I have Atarka's Commands, but I'm not running them currently; should I be? Also, as I'm already running a Naya mana base, is it worth throwing in Wild Nacatls? Thanks!

I'm running 4 Skullcrack and 4 Atarka's Command in my Jund build. It's useful against Wurmcoil and nature's claim. Also against opposing Helix. Searing Blaze is great against Infect, but I've recently replace one of my DRevs with Searing Blood. It helps vs infect and the like. Even if it doesn't kill their guy, if you can make them use a pump/protection spell out of combat, that's pretty much a win every time.

Good job, and yes the judge screwed you.
At fnm maybe he could get away with that but at a pptq level him saying it resolved means priority passed to late to respond.
Did you appeal to the head judge?
Either way id loom into reporting the situation to the dci the judges needs educated.
A few of you have asked about the judge situation, so here's what i do know.
1)He is Level 2.
2)He was the Head Judge at the event, so I didn't want to be a jerk and do that.

So in your guys' opinions, what is the best creature to put in place of guide until i get 3 more? I used 3 of my 4 guides as trade fodder when they were high to help a friend out who was in need of stuff his LGS didnt and would never have.
Spark elemental.
He always did 3 damage for me. He is essentially a bolt turns 1-4. The only time he didn't do damage was late in the game, and at that point, goblin guide isn't gonna help us anyway. The only other problem I could see is running into an early goyf, but then again, gobby guide isn't gonna help us out anyway.
I personally think spark elemental is better than swiftspear and miles better than vexing devil. I have been less than excited by swifty, but continue to run her due to her low mana cost. Don't get me wrong, she can be good, especially if you have a t1 swifty into seeing blaze, but she makes eidolon hands really clunky. I would much rather turn 1 sparky, turn to eidolon than most swiftspear plays.
It's hard to outdo a t1 goblin guide into t2 eidolon. But sparky helps you count to 20 just fine.
So in your guys' opinions, what is the best creature to put in place of guide until i get 3 more? I used 3 of my 4 guides as trade fodder when they were high to help a friend out who was in need of stuff his LGS didnt and would never have.
My experience playing with and without guide is that he can't really be replaced. Most people will agree that after guide/eidolon/swiftspear/possibly nacatl, either Hellspark Elemental or Keldon Marauders is the next best thing. Some people value the various lightning elementals higher but in real-world scenario's Hellspark Elemental and Keldon Marauders outperform those. I tried Vexing Devil but he only works against decks that you're strong against anyways. Decks that have good removal will just let you resolve him and then kill him off.
Question about the upgrade path from mono-red burn to Naya Burn. My only mono-red upgrade (and first upgrade) would be transitioning from Spark Elementals to Goblin Guides. What secondary color would be best to transition to first for both the main and sideboard and what lands should I target for the upgrade path?
White gives you all of the elements your deck needs including being able to deal with nasty creatures with Path to Exile and enchantment destruction with Wear // Tear.
Just running two colors you will want 4 and 4(ish) of Boros Charm and Lightning Helix in your main deck. I would run 4 Skullcrack main deck as well since you skip out on the anti life gain of Atarka's Command.
edit: Also, this is one of the downsides to Nacatl burn - the matchup against Abzan or other creature strategies suffers.

UBR MISHRA ARTIFICER PRODIGY
B SHEOLDRED WHISPERING ONE
R ASHLING THE PILGRIM
He is a must deal with. The only problem is he is somewhat slow, not being able to attack until t5. With the counter spells and discard available in grixis, it shouldn't be too difficult to allow him to swing. We have to kill him before he can start swinging in, plus he can stonewall most Creatures in burn.
He's part of the reason I have a Terminate in board. Naya will bring in PtE to deal with him.
Thanks!
2x Arid Mesa
4x Bloodstained Mire
5x Mountain
3x Sacred Foundry
1x Stomping Ground
4x Wooded Foothills
Creatures 14
4x Eidolon of the Great Revel
4x Goblin Guide
2x Grim Lavamancer
4x Monastery Swiftspear
4x Boros Charm
4x Lava Spike
4x Lightning Bolt
3x Lightning Helix
4x Rift Bolt
2x Searing Blaze
2x Shard Volley
4x Skullcrack
1x Anger of the Gods
2x Deflecting Palm
4x Destructive Revelry
1x Dragon's Claw
3x Kor Firewalker
2x Pyrite Spellbomb
2x Searing Blaze
I'm running 4 Skullcrack and 4 Atarka's Command in my Jund build. It's useful against Wurmcoil and nature's claim. Also against opposing Helix. Searing Blaze is great against Infect, but I've recently replace one of my DRevs with Searing Blood. It helps vs infect and the like. Even if it doesn't kill their guy, if you can make them use a pump/protection spell out of combat, that's pretty much a win every time.
Personally, I would amend the deck as follows:
Lands
-1 Mountain
+1 Stomping Ground
+1 Copperline Gorge
Creatures
-1 Grim Lavamancer
I/S Spells
-2 Shard Volley
-3 Lightning Helix
+1 Searing Blaze
+4 Atarka's Command
Sideboard
-1 DRev
-1 Searing Blaze
-1 Dragon's Claw
+2 PtE
+1 Searing Blood
You can cut the Cracks for Nacatl if you'd like, they are actually pretty good in a matchup vs Tron/Infect/Dredge.
Good job, and yes the judge screwed you.
At fnm maybe he could get away with that but at a pptq level him saying it resolved means priority passed to late to respond.
Did you appeal to the head judge?
Either way id loom into reporting the situation to the dci the judges needs educated.
1)He is Level 2.
2)He was the Head Judge at the event, so I didn't want to be a jerk and do that.

Just running two colors you will want 4 and 4(ish) of Boros Charm and Lightning Helix in your main deck. I would run 4 Skullcrack main deck as well since you skip out on the anti life gain of Atarka's Command.
My deck would look like this perhaps:
4 Goblin Guide
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
1 Grim Lavamancer
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Searing Blaze
4 Boros Charm
3 Lightning Helix
4 Skullcrack
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Arid Mesa
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Mountain
4 Wear // Tear
3 Kor Firewalker
3 Path to Exile
2 Deflecting Palm
1 Lightning Helix
