But that day you win the mirror with Merfolk Assassin you just feel you won at life...so there is that...I can't describe how happy I was testing online with it once and it actually happened lol...
Sadly, I don't think you can justify putting it in. It would't be the end of the world to include one in a sideboard though; match-ups where you just want more creatures you can bring it in as well.
Agreed. I wasn't saying it's good as a general SB card, but if you for some reason know you are going to say a large number of mirrors, it may be worth it.
Only Cursecatcher gets dinged by a Chalice on x = 1, so I'd say it should be fine to run the same amount of Caverns you were previously running. I run 4 even without Chalice of the Void, though, so I may not be the most reliable source of conflict between the two cards.
I think Chalice of the Void is underrated in the current meta. I used to run it in my sideboard, and I've considered running it mainboard a few times. Anything that keeps the Lightning Bolts away while hosing the likes of Affinity and Elves is welcome in my book. That said, it's a bit of an awkward play in games where you don't get an opening hand Æther Vial.
Give those guys with Chalice maina bit more credit please.
They don't play it because they come from legacy. They play it because it works good for them. They are actually winning with it, so there has to be some merit doing so.
Not saying that isn't the case. Just that is a common practice in Legacy that is find it's way over into Modern. If I had the Chalices, there is a good chance I would be running them this coming weekend at the GP.

How many would you suggest is the correct number to main then? And any more in the side?
I would main 2, personally, since they slot in nicely for Spell Pierce or Vapor Snag. You could side in 2 for decks that get hit really hard by it, like Bogles (x=1), Delver (x=1), Affinity (x=0,1), Elves (x=1), or even Living End (x=0) and maybe Tron (x=1). That said, be ready to side it out for conventional counterspells against decks that are all over the board CMC-wise, or that have ready access to artifact hate.
UW Control should be a rather favorable matchup. You are likely putting too many creatures into play, and losing everything to a boardwipe. By only leaving 3~4 power in play (ideally in the form of cursecatchers and adepts) you can present a reasonable clock, and potentially untap and slam 2+ lords, and attack for a lot of damage, which isn't soft to sorcery speed removal.
Iv been having a bit of trouble with pure U/W controls decks lately. I can not seem to get around a Supreme Verdict . I came up with the idea of putting in Meddling Mage as an answer for that spell.
Thoughts??
Play through Æther Vial, and don't over-extend. Commit enough resources for a quick clock, but don't blow your whole hand on it.
Hello fellow gills. I am here today asking you advice "FOR" the Restore Balance deck. My mate recently found it, built it, and fallen in love with it. I told him I don't think it stands a chance against Merfolk, but he insisted and out of 10 games I won every single one because of all our counter magic. I told him I don't know what he could do to beat my Fish deck, so I came here to ask the community, what does / can Restore Balance have that can fight through us. Or is it the same as us trying to fight through Elves?

Hello, quick question. I LOVE Merfolk, I think they are incredibly awesome creatures and playing a bunch of them would be really cool. However, is this deck as linear as it looks? It seems like you just attack and tap aether vials a lot. I'm sure it isn't this simple, of course! Would anyone be willing to explain some of the intricacies of how this deck gets more complex and fun? I really want to want to play this.
I think I agree with you. I'm having a really hard time deciding between tron and merfolk now! I like the theme of playing a tribe, and I love the controlly bouncy abilities of merfolk. But...wurmcoil and karn are cool too. But I don't really like needing 80% of my deck just to allow me to play a few cool cards... I like how merfolk all kind of work together. I think it's settled then. I need some merfolk! I am looking at this list. http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-merfolk-21949#online is this still pretty good and current? I know a lot of the primer examples here use coralhelm commander, and I think it would be really sweet to use the level up mechanic. I'm not sure where he would fit in here though, or If he's just outdated. Would anyone mind posting the lists they are using now?
Wow, thanks a lot for all that! Maybe MTGGoldfish isn't the best site to look at for lists? I didn't know there were so many merfolk variations. I would love a particularly interactive creature light one! Is tron more linear? haha it does seem like tron kind of plays itself. It looks like merfolk actually have a lot of ways to customize to personal preference? I would like something with some flex to it I can kind of grow or adapt with.
Sadly, I don't think you can justify putting it in. It would't be the end of the world to include one in a sideboard though; match-ups where you just want more creatures you can bring it in as well.
Much more interesting to me than that silly Merfolk Assassin sideboard are the 3 mainboard Chalice of the Void

Though, if I did main Chalice's, I think I might include a Nykthos or two, just to have more control over what X is set to.
