Yeah that list looks interesting. I think you still need a non-mill way to win, because if your opponent runs an emrakul or they unwrap and bolt you in their upkeep it could cost you the game.
yeah ill have a pyrite spellbomb in the list somewhere for regionals. for right now i just wanted to keep the list really lean to get a feel for if whir is worth it or not. and after a fair amount of goldfishing and testing with partners on cockatrice, i think i am in fact on board with it. its rare that you actually live the dream of eot whir for bloom untap kill you. but it kind of doesnt matter because you can most likely just cast it next turn while you go off and its still totally fine. i also really like having more ways to access the shredder to quickly go infinite. many games in the past were lost to going off and not finding another sunrise effect or shredder to perform an actual loop in time
i dont see a list anywhere but i would never, ever play an eggs list with less than 4 reshape if thats what you meant. the sacrifice is irrelevant, and usually draws you a card if anything. reshape is the best card in the deck
Yeah reshape is just too abusable in this deck. The fact that it can act as a ritual just outclasses whir entirely. Whir is good, but if anything I think it offers consistency rather than a replacement.
I've just posted an article to MTGCanada.com with a new spicy build of Eggs. The key four differences are:
1. Yes, it uses Whir. Yes, I've read the discussion about Whir vs. Reshape. Reshape allows for more turn 3 kills, but Whir is just WAY more powerful overall, as you can actually interact for once with instant speed tutors for things like Pithing Needle, etc., and being able to use it at EOT gives us a greatly improved game against decks that interact with us (basically renders Remand useless).
2. Inventor's Fair. I think some people were already running it anyways, but it is wonderful.
3. Speaking of interaction, I replaced Banefire/Grapeshot/Conjurer's Bauble looks with Walking Ballista. Deals 40+ damage just as well, and can be played mid-game to interact with things. You can also Whir for Ballista, and yes, it goes right into the graveyard, but that's okay because....
4. Scrap Trawler. Oh. My. God. This thing is a tutorable Faith's Return. Just think about how this works when you're sacrificing Wellsprings, Stars, and Mox Opals. Resolving one of these while going off makes the whole thing basically bulletproof. And yeah, like I mentioned, if you're in a pinch to get your wincon but might fizzle out on draws anyways, pitch a Ballista into the graveyard with X=0, recur it with Scrap Trawler, play it, and win.
Another sweet thing about Scrap Trawler? Your opponent tries to Shatterstorm you. You have 7-8 artifacts out. Whir for Scrap Trawler.
Anyways, enough babbling, here's the link. I've been winning like crazy with it in the last few days since I worked the kinks out.
Hello, I am new to this thread, but not new to playing Eggs. I have been watching this thread since shortly after its incarnation and it has really influenced my deckbuilding. Thank you guys for all of the help over the years!
I am currently running 2x Whir of Invention alongside 3x Reshape and having terrific results. Since I play paper Eggs, my primary goal is to be fast-- meaning that I try to get to the Codex Shredder loop as quickly as possible. A reasonable opponent will concede on the spot and we can get on with games 2 and 3.
Here is my current list. Keep in mind that my sideboard depends on my local meta from week to week.
Land (16)
4x Darksteel Citadel
3x Ghost Quarter
3x Adarkar Wastes
1x Buried Ruin
4x Island
1x Plains
Spells (44)
2x Lotus Bloom
4x Mox Opal
4x Chromatic Star
4x Chromatic Sphere
2x Terrarion
1x Conjurer's Bauble
1x Implement of Improvement
1x Codex Shredder
3x Ichor Wellspring
1x Elsewhere Flask
1x Mind Stone
3x Reshape
2x Whir of Invention
2x Aetherflux Reservoir
4x Krark-Clan Ironworks
4x Faith's Reward
3x Thoughtcast
2x Open the Vaults
Immediately you can see that I have replaced Banefire with 2x Aetherflux Reservoir. This was not an easy decision. Banefire is great because is cannot be countered and the damage cannot be prevented. Aetherflux Reservoir can be countered and the damage can be prevented. It's also subject to the same hate that we usually get. Here's the catch: Aetherflux is instant speed, especially if we have the Codex Shredder loop and, at the same time, it is gaining us a stupid amount of life, even if one or two spells are countered along the way.
The best part of the Aetherflux Reservoir inclusion is the life gain. Even if I start combo-ing off and I whiff along the way, if Aetherflux Reservoir is out, I can pass the turn with usually greater than 20 life. Burn players really hate this and so does Valakut. All that hard work for nothing. This also allows us to try to combo again the next few turns while our opponent tries to bring us down to 0 life again and again. I have even been in situations where I did not even need a Faith's Reward to kill my opponent. Chain 8-9 spells together and you're done. Game 2. In addition, it is also an artifact and can be tutored with Reshape and Whir of Invention and brought back with Open the Vaults.
This is why Banefire is in the sideboard now-- against Turbo Fog and Control.
Whir of Invention is an absolute all-star card for Eggs. Try it and you won't be disappointed. NOTE: IT IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR RESHAPE!!! I tried this and did not have a great time. Reshape, most of the time, especially in the earlier turns, is just plain better. UU is cheaper than UUU despite Improvise. Whir of Invention is a good response and can save you in a pinch but is not an end-all, be-all for Reshape. Play it alongside Reshape and never more copies than Reshape. Whir of Invention is also the reason for Elsewhere Flask and dropping a copy of Open the Vaults. More tutors means more chance for the Codex Shredder loop which means less graveyard recursion necessary.
I have tried Inventor's Fair and it wasn't fantastic by any means. 4 mana is a lot to crack this land and tutor. I would rather Whir of Invention. I am less concerned about the combo turn than I am the early turns. Whir of Invention is superior during the early turns.
Anyway, that's my rant about my deck decisions. Ultimately I think Aetherflux Reservoir vs. Banefire vs. Emrakul vs. Thopter/Sword all depends on your local meta. I, for one, am in love with the blue tank of mana.
I'm glad I wasnt the only one to realize fireweaver is great in this deck ive had it in the board since it became legal and it is great because nobody sees it coming! Also on the whir vs reshape argument I'm playing a 1 whir and 3 reshape split and it seems to be about right. I'm still trying to get the rest of the sideboard together, I've been using wear/tear to great success against Rip and stony silence might be something to consider trying.
Hi, you have a very nice list. About opals and blooms, i would split 3 / 3, also maybe you should try 3 kci, because drawing a second kci, or multiple opals on the opening hand, or besides opening hand drawing bloom,in all that situations they are useless. My logic is that 3 reshapes for 3 blooms, 1 or 2 whirs to get the 3 kci (or something else like codex shredder), and 3 opals to have a good chance of 3 turn kills.
My only doubt is about elsewhere flask over wellspring, i found it better if you play the fw fist than kci, but in the opposite situation the extra card from the wellspring may be the difference to draw in time a fw/otv to recycle your artifacts.
Well, congratulations and thank you for playing this unique deck!
Been working on a Whir list for a bit now. Currently I'm on 3 Reshape, 3 Whir, as 7+ tutors were just too clunky to draw. 1 Bloom for tutoring, 4 Opal, 4 KCI to max out early win potential, 17 lands, pretty standard stuff... double Codex Shredder as win con, sometimes next to Emrakul or Exsanguinate, mostly due to time constraints online. Most decks can't actually beat the mill + land destruction. Probably gonna change to 2 Swan Songs main as secondary wincon once I've tweaked the rest of the list and found two replaceable slots.
Currently running 4 Terrarion but might change them to Prophetic Prisms, as the immediate card draw feels better while setting up. Terrarion helps enable early Thoughtcasts tho... thoughts?

Terrarion also nets a mana off KCI, which is relevant.
I've been playing my weird version with Scrap Trawler and loving it. 4 Opals since you get to recur one every time you sac a 1-mana egg. 3 Blooms, 4 reshape, 2 Whir. Currently I switch between Banefire and Ballista as my win con, but I also like Underhanded Designs as a more resilient version of Reckless Fireweaver. Aetherflux Reservoir also sounds very neat, but I think I prefer Ballista as the artifact-based kill (can't whir for it directly, but can recur it from the yard with Scrap Trawler), and neither gets past Leyline, so... personally I think I prefer interaction over life gain, but I can see the case for either.
What about Pia's Revolution, your opponent will almost always take 3, im thinking about using it in eggs with scrap trawler since the spoiler, or it does feel like an overkill for you?
EDIT: `Pia's Revolution is pretty much an overkill every time, but i discovered the real deal, scrap trawler + hangarback walker + KCI, you can get easily the hangarback back to your hand and them you cast for 2 and with KCI you sac he and the tokens for 4
Personally, this take seems sweet. It looks versatile, resilient, and finely-tuned. Forgive me if this list isn't actually new and I just overlooked it on a previous page
Roar of Reclamation is sweet particularly since it means you aren't bring back stony silence or rest in peace that you've already dealt with. Or if you are against burn that pesty Eidolon. That extra mana is rough, but maybe it's worth it?
Otherwise I've been playing a Scrap Trawler list I saw on mtggoldfish https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/instant-deck-tech-trawler-kci-modern and I have to say it's sweet. Scrap Trawler is just so brutal with ironworks and it needs so little to go off with that it's great. A few of the choices have felt kind of akward to me (Etherium Sculpter just never does much honestly). But it's great fun. Just gets tiring after clicking so much on modo though.
I agree that some of the choices in the article's list seem cheeky. A Scrap Trawler list just 5-0'd a Modern League and it looks so dope. It seems to be a lot more streamlined than the mtggoldfish list. I will definitely start playing around with trawler too.
I'm going to be developing and testing out a whir toolbox version of the deck over the next month or two at fnms. If you guys have any idea of good artifacts, preferably 1 or 2 drops that can cantrip and have toolbox value and abilities, I'd love to hear from you.
Is there some trick to that Scrap Trawler list that makes it consistent? The Trawler + KCI combo is sweet and all but with no Whir and no Reshape I don't see how you get it down by turn four consistently. I would also expect the Trawler to have a very short life expectancy.
To answer my own question, the Scrap Trawler list is somewhat consistent because just about everything in the deck that is not a combo piece is a cantrip. You protect Scrap Trawler by keeping it in hand until KCI is out. Once KCI is down and Trawler is in play you can get a ton of value with removal on the stack, often enough to keep the combo going.
The way that you lose is by (1) dying before you can play KCI; (2) having KCI countered; and (3) hate cards. The sideboard right now is geared towards (2) and (3) way more than (1). For the online meta I think the sideboard ought to be -3 nature's claim and +1 Pyroclasm +2 Engineered Explosives. EE is very nice because it can blow up permanent based hate while also sliding into the bauble slot of providing mana during your combo turn. Pyroclasm buys a turn or two against most of the creature decks that are looking to turn 3 you (goblins, Sram0, sometimes storm, sometimes 8whack).
ETA: On the other hand, Nature's Claim is literally the only out to Stony Silence. I think it needs to be in the board but I would really like to see more EE and Pyroclasm as well.
