Okay. I haven't been playing recently, so could you explain why he's more than just a sideboard card against Burn?
Against Burn, or in Burn? In Burn, when it hits the table, it's an efficient creature for 2 damage. If it sticks around longer, he can cost opponents 4+ life and is a must answer. He beats, he blocks, he's a clock without combat. Storm will fold most of the time, Lightning Helix only grants 1 life gain, and opposing Eidolons are boons or curses so long as you play as tightly as possible. He allows the board to be complex and since you have all the dome bullets you can control the game.
Against Burn, it's almost agame over if you've kept a slow hand and youre on the draw.
“Modern has provided us a non-rotating format that is far more accessible than Legacy or Vintage, but still retains many of the qualities that people enjoy in those formats—such as a more stable metagame, the ability to play and tweak the same deck week after week, and simply a much more powerful card pool than Standard.”
- Sam Stoddard, “Developing Modern” (June 21, 2013) (by means of Sheridan Lardner, "Fixing Modern: Defining Format Mission (March 16, 2016))
This Eidolon of the Great Revel its so amazing, this week, 2 tournaments and 3-1 and 3-1 results, Eidolon its awesome, its deserve 4x slot in the mainboard
I said some months ago, this card will be good on Burn, but i cant imagine that it will be so amazing, i test it these days and i can say its the new Burn staple for some years
Speciall mention vs Pif Combo its just auto-win, turn 2 Eidolon and 2-0 in 5 minutes ...
I own 9 copies, 2 of them are foil, and his price its rising a lot from 1.50€ to 6.50€, foils rises from 3.50€ to 15.00€
Keep all your copies safe, this card will rising a lot when rotates out from standard, its a 10-15€ euro card, 30€ foil, not joking

Running with 4 Flames with 18 lands is going to be a bad time. There's going to be a lot of times where it will sit in your hand and you can't cast it because it costs too much. Dropping 2 Flames and adding 2 lands should help with that. I also recommend running some kind mix of Spike Volley and dropping some 2 mana spells, because your 2 drop spot is packed and it's going to make your deck little slow. Speaking of slow, replace Clifftop with 4 Mana Confluence. The chances of having a tap land on turn one is greater than zero.
I dont have mana screw problems, i usually have mana flooded, for sure, 18 lands are much for a 1-2 mana spells, with 5 spells and 2 mana in hand its a perfect hand and i usually draw the 3th or 4th land ... sometimes i have 6-7 lands in play!! and no cards in hand ...
this last tournament, i win 2-0 3 matches and lost one by 2-1 and one of them was keeping a 1 land and 6 spells hand (3 was 1 mana speels) but dont get more lands ... rest i floodes myself
no more lands, for sure, maeby 19 lands can be good to, 20 are too much for me
edit, about clifftop, why not 4x painlands? i will get 1 point damage and sometimes not (skullcrack for example)
and thanks for advice of shard volley, i dont runnint because of 18 lands but with 20 lands can be good

So for some reason I was forced to change my nickname.
Anyways, Eidolon is AMAZING. Worse-case, he's a mini-blightning. 2 mana, 2 damage, your opponent pitches a removal spell. At best, he does 16+ points of damage on his own. He makes every choice agonizing for your opponent (Gix probe is now 4 life), and amps up the pressure to 11. He hoses storm, does terrible things to snapcaster mages (go on, snap-bolt), and can turn sideways. Manage to be on the play against affinity? If they don't have the nuts, they're going to flat-out lose. You don't care that it's symmetrical, your life total isn't at risk, theirs is. Even in the mirror, he says "I want to play a game".
I'd say he's going to become a core member of burn decks, and running any less than 4 is a mistake.
Eidolon also gives you a way to deal with Leyline of Sanctity. He swings and his ability doesn't target, so your opponent still takes damages. A couple of weeks ago I lost 1-2 to an 8Rack deck because my opponent had turn 1 Leyline in game 2 and game 3. I really wished I had run a playset of Eidolons back then. I have a playset of Eidolons now XD. Can't wait to play again this weekend.

Hello everyone. I'm making the jump from standard to modern, and Burn has always been my play style since I started. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this deck I found online. I have tested it some in Cockatrice and it seems to hold up pretty well. I'm still learning all the modern archetypes, so it will take some time for me to get accustomed to it. Thanks in advance!
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
1 Grim Lavamancer
4 Hellspark Elemental
2 Spark Elemental
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Searing Blaze
3 Shard Volley
4 Skullcrack
18 Mountain
Sideboard - Should I be thinking about adding Leyline of Punishment?
1 Anger of the Gods
3 Combust
2 Dragon's Claw (Not sure about this one)
2 Molten Rain
3 Relic of Progenitus
2 Shattering Spree
2 Smash to Smithereens
I would love to add fetch lands and get really exotic with the deck, but I am on a strict budget with a new baby at the moment.
For lands with or without Im always going with 20 in a 60 or 61 (like I run for Burn).
For RW you can be successful running 4 Sacred Foundry, 4 Clifftop Retreat, 4 Battlefield Forge, 5 Mountain and 3 Plains. It gives you 17 Mountains reducing your chances of not having R or enough R and 15 W mana which all you really need is one source per game for the most part.
For RWB, I wouldnt run without Fetch Lands because 3 color would be much harder and consistency issues would come into play enough to cost you enough games. Now it can be done but waiting for the right mana can be way too frustrating.

As for Dragon's Claw it isnt really a need as the decks it would be really good against like Burn your just racing anyways. Id rather have a side that can help vs more decks.
Went 7-1 at a modern GPT today. The whole day I only lost 2 games. In the finals I just went to a draw with the other guy so we split the prize. Searing Blaze was great for me, but I don't think I'd want to run more than 2. Here is my list
Tell me, why would you put a Eidolon of the Great Revel in a Burn deck? It's anti-burn. All the main burn spells cost 1-3, so yeah. Zap your opponent, and zap youself while you're doing it. Doesn't make sense to me.
Because as long as you burn your opponent faster than you burn out you'll win the match. It's the same reason Flame Rift gets played in burn.

Eidolon is very good for Burn even though it does hit Burn also. There are a bunch of cards that hits Burn players like Flame Rift, Sulfuric Vortex, Flamebreak, Volcanic Fallout, Pyrostatic Pillar and so on. Now why use cards that hurt you also in Burn....well thats because the play style of Burn not caring about their own life total for the most part. You wanna out race them even if it means giving up 19 life. Just get them down to 0 not caring if you have 12 or 3 life at the end if Eidolon is on the turf. I totally agree its better suited in RDW and Mono Red Burn because Fetches and Shocks also hurt.
Now if your at 2 and you have a Eidolon out your not gonna hit the opponent with a Lightning Bolt. Its how you use cards like this in context of the situations. Now the benefit of this card in Burn.
Lets look at some matches with this cards out that it can be really good against. This is not in any order and not all the decks out there just off the top of my head.
First almost any removal used on Eidolon will do damage to that player so its at least a 2 damage card which normally ends up much more.
Storm - Look at some deck lists and see how many cards they use per turn to go off. This card would hit them hard.
Scapeshift - All those cantrips/card draw engines will hurt Scapeshift.
Affinity - If you go first and get this out turn 2 and hope they dont drop those crazy first turn hands then they get hit hard by everything they drop.
Zoo - Do you think someone will drop a bunch of 1 drops or Burning-Tree Emissary chains without taking a huge hit, speeding up their clock.
Elves - Just try to drop and return all those Elves back and forth to combo into the big dudes.
Soul Sister - All those 1 drop life gainers wont be as effective.
Delver, Control - Yes they have Lightning Bolt/Path to Exile/Doom Blade/Whatever but again its at least 2 damage to the opponent and let them counter your Burn they pay 2 life per counter under 3 mana.
Now for the mirror Burn match. If they hit you they hit themselves, remember there is no Chain Lightning in Modern so if they use Lava Spike and Bump in the Night they either have to hold and wait or take 2 damage again speeding up their clock. Yes you hurt yourself but its more beneficial to you in more match ups. Plus you can use it as an attacker if need be.
I no longer run Mono Red Burn, I run RG RW and RB Burn so I take enough damage from Fetches and Shock Lands already which is why Im not running him but if I ran Mono Red Im putting 4 of him in.
Hi all. I'm thinking about taking this fetchless R/B list to my LGS' Modern night this week. I've never played modern there, so the meta is unknown. I think the cards I'm least sure about mainboard are Magma Jet, Searing Blood, and Shard Volley. Any suggestions on sideboard cards? I've thought of these as possible includes
I notice vexing devil had not been included in recent list, is there reason for their omission?
@PurpleSunsZenith, I felt without fetches, it is better for you to play a play set of magma jet. shard volley is good, I suggest a 2 of will be enough. as for the other option, I wouldn't recommend searing blood. searing flame is better. another good burn is flame of the blood hand that you can consider a 2 of or even a play set.
I'm thinking of making it 20 when I convert it to boros burn. The suggestion you gave was pretty much what I had in mind. Thanks
RWB: at first I was thinking of maybe putting city of brass or mana confluence. But then I realized I am already taking too much damage from shock lands and eidolons (I have 4 main deck). I guess I need to invest on fetches first before splashing the 3rd color.
@charlesching: I run a playset of vexing devils in my list. Sometimes they deal 4, but my opponents would usually let it stay and bolt/path/galvanic blast it at the end of my turn. Turn 1 or 2 Vexing devil is great, but the card gets progressively worse as the game goes on.

I got a hold of 4 Blackcleave Cliffs today and I think its going to push me to make my deck more exotic. I went ahead and bought 4 Copperline Gorge to go along with it to see if I can brew an Jund (red splash black/green) Burn deck.
Here is what I am contemplating. Thoughts are much appreciated:
I've gotten to play a lot more modern recently. Eidolon is SUPER VALUE. People, jump on this bandwagon while he is still affordable. Shard Volley was my bane at 4 copies. Going down to 3. If I feel like I need to cut another card for land that will be the one that goes down. I have 1 fetch and I am praying to the WOTC gods for buddy fetches as this deck will explode with potential. I'm very happy with the amount of 1 drops I've increased the deck to. I really like the Shrine of Burning Rage as it has won me quite a few long games even though it interacts poorly with Shard Volley. Destructive Revelry will be a much welcomed addition against Leyline of Sanctity and it has the same clock as Magma Jet. Anyway please, let me know what you think. My deck was doing really well before but I feel like the extra colors are really going to help.
