Dude, I can't tell you how much I'm appreciating your suggestions!
You've convinced me on my big fat monsters. At least cutting 2 of them. I like my grave titan, but sheoldred and massacre can go (I can always bring them back into the deck when I'm playing against my friends )...also I gotta admit...obliterator isn't the right 4 drop for me. But dang I want to SO badly play it! haha :P. I've gone completely /noob with him and am just blinded by how cool he looks on paper.
I think he's just gonna be one of those cards I'm going to try and play until I've had sufficient proof that he's just not gonna cut it for me.
I'm not a huge fan of Varolz...but dang it I think I may just need him. He gives me yet another late game finisher...and he's at the perfect CMC for my pods. Like you said, my strangleroots can be podded away to fetch him up...so he's just infinitely easier and more efficient to try and fetch up then Viscera is.
...and...OMG...I LOOOOOVE the sword idea! Holy cow! Can't believe I never thought of that! Sword of fire and ice might be the better pick technically...but I just made the purchase of a sword of light and shadow...it just perfectly fits the whole theme of this deck and can quickly put me out of reach late game.
Plus I don't expect to be playing against a whole heck of a lot of burn...or delver decks...but I know I'll be going against at least 1 competitive white/blue/x control deck...and I'd assume I'll be playing vs. some black somewhere as well. The prot white and black I'm blindly assuming will be more relevant to me.
Of course it being a 1 of in my deck, with no straight card draw or ways of fetching up the sword...I don't think I'll be getting to use it much...but when I do draw into it, and a game does go late...I'm going to be so happy to have that thing in my deck.
Awesome idea man!
You also have me convinced on mana dorks...though I do wish they did a little more for me mid/late game (/cry...why must Deathrite Shaman be banned? WHY!!! /throws a tantrum lol).
Am adding in 2 more elvish mystics.
Noble Hierarch might be better for me...he gives me exalted and can also produce U mana which could actually pay for my spellskite's ability once in a great while...but meh. I'm not spending 120+ on a pair of them hehe. I'd love to...but just not happening! Not right now at any rate.
Thank you for your awesome suggestions and comments man!
haha I love how my deck was a cheap $120'ish casual deck just less then a month ago...and now it's turning into something of a dream deck for me :P. I know it's not nearly as powerful as the current builds running white (man white adds SO much to pod decks!). But never the less...I'm loving my build and am super proud to be running it. This is the first time I've ever ran a black/green deck and it's just such a blast!
Appreciate you helping me further tune my deck
That said, I do think Delver is beatable, or at least something can be done to get the match back to around 50%. The meta has just gone all stupid because buying into the #1 and #2 decks in Modern suddenly became radically cheaper, so there's a flood of those decks to fight through. It'll balance itself out eventually. Modern has an aggro deck that isn't Affinity, and a lot of people wanted that, and it has a legit tempo deck, and a lot of people wanted that, and Jund Goodstuff is no longer able to bully all the other decks through raw value, and a hell of a lot of people wanted that. Meanwhile, we're on the most flexible deck in the format: we'll adapt. I mean, it's not like we have to deal with Containment Priest (yet...).
Hi people.
Yesterday I've played a little tournament in my local store.
Went bad with a classic melira list.
These are the matches:
Turn 1 vs scapeshift. Lost 2-0
Turn 2 vs another scapeshift. Lost 2-0
Turn 3 vs UR delver. Won 2-1
Turn 4 vs burn. Won 2-1
Turn 5 vs UR delver. Lost 2-0
What I've learned is that burn and UR delver 4 kitchen finks and 2 siege rhino are mandatory. Also the melira combo package (melira, viscera) is useless.
The two matches I've won is thanks to finks and rhino.

It has been more than a year since I played pod. I also have been reading this thread and is really helpful remembering all interactions. Specially now that pod is using restoration angel.
I'm planning to play in the next big tourney in our place. In line with that I have a couple of questions hope you guys could help me.
1.) Seeing the list it has quite a high curve. is it okay to have that high curve for angel pod? This list has only 7 mana dorks (4 birds & 3 noble and no wall of roots)
2.) I'd like to put in sin collector in the main. Should I remove Entomber Exarch in place of sin collector?
3.) What is the right number for chord of calling? back then top decks only used 2 pieces? Tried the deck and its not that good to have chord on the start of the game. But maybe somebody can enlighten me why 3 should be the right number?
4.) What should we put in to SB to better our match against Tron decks? Is Fulminator mage good enough?
5.) Is Windborn muse any good in the 75? against decks that try to swarm like merfolk?
6.) Sometimes I get mana screwed when I get the single basic swamp in the early game. Would plains be better than swamp as there are more GW WW casting cost creatures.
7.) Usually I win game one but I'm having a hard time playing against Grafdigger's cage in game 2 and game 3. Should I up the number of abrupt decays in the side?
Also played games against Ur delver and it's not that bad match up. Seige Rhino is really good as we tend to go aggro than going for the combo kill

If you're finding Melira too clunky, I'd recommend the switch over to Angel Pod. Archangel of Thune and Spike Feeder only take 2 slots instead of the 3-4 that Melira takes, and usually kills the turn you land it, instead of taking an extra turn like Melira does (though functionally they're the same against non-Twin decks). The extra 1-2 slots you gain mainboard can become more disruption like Entomber Exarch, or an extra Voice/Finks/Pontiff

Also played games against Ur delver and it's not that bad match up. Seige Rhino is really good as we tend to go aggro than going for the combo kill
Let's see...
1) The curve isn't so bad; high would be more than three 5-drops/any 6-drops. Mostly you want the dorks for casting early Pods, as they don't tend to live long enough to help you with your 4/5-drops. Triple Voice, maindeck Decays, and Melira is plenty of action for the early game.
2) People have. Sin Collector is better against spell-heavy Delver, where Exarch is better in the attrition wars against various flavours of BGx, so Sin Collector should probably be the go-to as of now.
3) "Right number" is highly subjective, especially since Chord is one of the cards that comes out on a regular basis G2&3. Generally speaking, Melira lists want more Chords than Angel ones, because the combo pieces are cheaper; some of the Angel-only lists drop the Chords entirely, but it's my feeling that unless you're replacing them with another card draw/advantage spell (like Abzan Charm) that it won't work out in the long run. More Chords means you can have better targeted hate pieces, like Eidolon of Rhetoric against Storm or Kataki against Affinity. Less Chords means you have more options when it comes to non-creature spells, because you're no so shackled to doing everything through Chord and Pod.
4) Fulminator is okay. Realm Razer is a bit better, but Razer is really only very strong against Tron while Fulminator can kill Celestial Colonnade in the UWr matches. GR Tron is such a horrible matchup that there's almost nothing you can do to salvage it, though, so generally the method of preparing for it is to just hope to avoid it and use those sideboard slots for other things.
5) Not... really. There's not enough decks that go wide in Modern for Propaganda-style effects to be that strong, and generally Orzhov Pontiff will do more work against the token-based ones. Merfolk can usually be contained with Thoughtseize and Abrupt Decay, and not letting them have Aether Vial for too long.
6) The Swamp is more to mitigate the lifeloss from Thoughtseize. With Windswept Heath instead of Misty Rainforest, most manabases should be able to support a Plains alongside the Swamp and 2-3 Forests.
7) Grafdigger's Cage is a sound hosing. Hope that you can make them discard it early, or that you can Chord for Pridemage/Reclamation Sage when they draw it. MOAR DECAY is also looking more and more to be the best catch-all solution to most things; I think it might be a good idea to just start with four Decays and work out the rest of the hate pieces from there.
For the UR delver/ young pyromancer match up, I have two golgari charm in the side. This is not a lost slot at all as this can be quite versatile (destroy enchantement: I think about eidolon of the great revel and aura hexproof match up / regeneration: quite useful against wraths).
to have a continuous flow of creatures (that's why top of the curve is 5). It does not really matter if they are removed as (i) some of them have persist or undying, (ii) some of them are just an additional body but are only interesting for their ETB trigger and (iii) I don't mind taking the risk to trade on a one on one basis for certain creatures (I think about vampire nighthawk and hypnotic scepter) as if there is no response to these, this creates a very good advantage;
I have at least a flyer on every CMC level (save the 5th one).
Thornling is a great finisher as you can pod it from a "poor" 4 CMC (eg deceiver exarch) and give it haste and if need be trample. Once in play, you generally have no card in hand and you are able to use your mana to make it a 7/1 trample indestrucible dude.
signal pest was a try and i have to say that is quite effective with a chord late game at the end of the opponent's turn. I am sure that some of you will disagree with the approach but the bonus can be quite significant (+ 5 / + 6 dmg).
Finally, I don't play 4 birthing pod but prefer 3 pod + 3 chord of calling. Here again, purists will disagree but it works quite well for me.
I hope it can give ideas to those who are brewing GB. Open to any suggestion as well
Recently cut the seer and Melira from mine and while I miss the kill from Redcap, I feel the deck is stronger without semi dead draws, clunky openers, and what seemed to be bad top decks without pod.
Will say that Siege Rhino has been over performing at all stages of the game. He's an awesome pod target to put pressure on them, drain life, works well with Exalted and Resto Angel. I cut a Finks for one and I want to put a second one in. But don't know what to cut.
Got in a few more games against Delver, it's taken me a bit but I think I've figured out a working plan. The G1 key to the matchup seems to be Orzhov Pontiff into Murderous Redcap into Shriekmaw. That's effectively a triple board wipe that they can't counter, with their low creature count it's backbreaking. That also happens to be just about the most black centric draw there is in G1 if you have to cast some of those cards. Hate cards slow them down, but generally leave them with a board, and a board of 1/1 elementals backed by a few burn spells can still be lethal, or even just let them chump block forever until they get an opening. Using that plan I've been able to considerably up my win rate in the games where I have a pod. It has also made the 2 and 3 drop hate cards like Spellskite and Eidolon of Rhetoric less valuable.
UR Delver is a hard match, I'm trying Courser of Kruphix, because it can survive bolts, and It's a solid card with the card advantage and life gain. I'm still not sure about Eidolon of Rhetoric, but it think in the end it helps. I have 2 back to nature because I was facing bogles and many control/combo decks based on enchants, and I think It's very nice. For me the worst match up besides delver is UWR Tempo or Control deck, full of bolts, and helix, plus some counter, and snapcaster + restoration angel or some mass removal, with big board effect single creatures. And with the meta now the melira and seer combos is not worth, Angel is just better. Like I said I'm new to the modern format and the competitive magic and I'm not the crazy grinder, I'm just playing for fun and I enjoy the competitive scenario. Oh and I don't play the nobles because I don't have the money yet, I feel that exalted is really good when you need to beat down fast, even more when you stack the board with nobles + a pridemage. The arbor elf works fine, and I'm not playing the pilgrim because I think with arbor I can cast Redcap for double black. So if you guys can help or give me some tips I'll be glad. Am I on the right path to get into daily events? And any one have any idea what is going to be the melira of next modern season, or at least will melira be a competitive deck?
Sorry for any spell errors, english is not my first language.
The arbor elf works fine, and I'm not playing the pilgrim because I think with arbor I can cast Redcap for double black.
Only if you can untap Overgrown Tomb. That situation is possible, but you'll be lacking white mana sometimes. That's what Avacyn's Pilgrim is needed for. Plus, you can get a situation where Arbor elf is just useless(for example: a two lander hand with Razorverge Thicket, Arbor Elf and a Swamp).
I still haven't decided what the last couple slot will be taken in the main board. Good thing I am not relied on this being my deck. Right now at this current time my Small Zoo deck is preferred to be played. However I can't find myself putting this on the back burner. Just love the fact that it can be so easy to combo out.
Okay, screw it. Making the purchase of 2 nobles haha. It'll drive me insane not having them.

You also have me convinced on mana dorks...though I do wish they did a little more for me mid/late game (/cry...why must Deathrite Shaman be banned? WHY!!! /throws a tantrum lol).

Yesterday I've played a little tournament in my local store.
Went bad with a classic melira list.
These are the matches:

Turn 2 vs another scapeshift. Lost 2-0
Turn 3 vs UR delver. Won 2-1

What I've learned is that burn and UR delver 4 kitchen finks and 2 siege rhino are mandatory. Also the melira combo package (melira, viscera) is useless.
The two matches I've won is thanks to finks and rhino.

I guess the key points (for me) are:
Open to any suggestion as well
It has too many drawbacks in my view; ie costs 3 black and enters the battlefield tapped.
Dorks make sense if you have access to gavony township. If you have not (it is a BG list), then your position late game is not that great.
I am fine with the number of persist/undying creatures currently in the deck.
The dual-combo build is definitely viable, and nice for redundancy, but I personally prefer more disruption.

Yeah... it may seem a little over board, but I have found out you need many different ways to win with pod.

Will say that Siege Rhino has been over performing at all stages of the game. He's an awesome pod target to put pressure on them, drain life, works well with Exalted and Resto Angel. I cut a Finks for one and I want to put a second one in. But don't know what to cut.
Thank you so much mchief111 for the amazing art!

I'm new to modern, and trying to play competitive, I play PRE's and practice in the tournament practice room. Here is the list I'm Playing:
1 Plains
1 Swamp
2 Overgrown Tomb
3 Razorverge Thicket
1 Temple Garden
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Windswept Heath
3 Gavony Township
1 Godless Shrine
4 Birds of Paradise
3 Arbor Elf
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Wall of Roots
1 Qasali Pridemage
3 Voice of Resurgence
1 Spellskite
1 Eternal Witness
1 Spike Feeder
1 Orzhov Pontiff
1 Sin Collector
1 Courser of Kruphix
3 Kitchen Finks
1 Restoration Angel
1 Linvala, Keeper of Silence
1 Murderous Redcap
1 Siege Rhino
1 Archangel of Thune
1 Shriekmaw
2 Chord of Calling
4 Birthing Pod
1 Sin Collector
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
1 Kor Firewalker
1 Entomber Exarch
1 Kataki, War's Wage
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Eidolon of Rhetoric
2 Slaughter Pact
2 Back to Nature
And you should probably buy Verdant Catacombs first, instead of Noble Hierarch, replacing your Bloodstained Mire
