Splinter Twin is arguably one of the best matchups for the deck - perhaps you need more practice pacing your threats and your interaction? Abzan can be brutal, especially if you have a slow start, as they will just drown you in value. Hitting them hard and fast is the best recipe - once they get into two spells per turn territory, we can't keep up.
I don't know if you guys agree with me, but GR tron and abzan (melira company, podles pod etc) are our worst matches.
So why can't we use 19 forest + 2 tectonic edge, or 20 forest + 2 tectonic edge?
Gavony Township and Urzas pieces is too hard to beat, and we have amulet blooms too
I'm asking this because the meta changed, and we need to be able to answer that.
I still think Affinity and Amulet are worse than both Tron and CoCoCombo, but I understand what you mean
I simply dont see how we could support either GQ or Tec Edge, with the casting cost of some of the creatures in the deck :-( Tron is beatable, and in my opinion usually becomes a race to the finish line. Post-board I think our package is strong enough for Tron - I am more worried about Amulet Bloom. If you are dead-serious about going for their lands, I would consider Beast Within instead - I have been looking to add it to the deck lately. Overall, I don't think right now is the best time to be playing Stompy. Most of our good matchups are on the decline, and some very linear "big-mana" decks are roaming around. Even Merfolk has gotten to a point where it is a bad matchup with the multiple Tidebinder Mages maindeck, and sometimes even Hibernation postboard.
I haven't played all that much against the Abzan CoCo deck, but I have played against Elves, and that is just brutal for us :-(
I think we need a card like an improved Viridian Zealot in order to become competitive again - 2 mana for a 2/1 with a 2 mana activation is unfortunately not good enough
Hey everyone, went to my first local tournament since 2006 and have been playing a list very similar to user_369654. I went 2-2, losing against Splintertwin (0-2, I had no idea what I was doing and only after did I figure out that Vines is good) and Abzan (0-2, their creatures just seem to out value mine). I did win against Jund (2-0) and Mono U Tron (2-0). I felt that 3 Treetop Village was often too many, and I was told that I should consider adding in Scavenging Ooze as well as a few Dungrove Elder. Any recommendations? Should I be getting Spellskites to combat Splintertwin? In my meta, I know that there is burn, RG Tron and more Jund. Thanks!
I think spellskite in MD still isn't a must. Splinter twin is not our worst match, but you need to be able to know how to fight against. You need to play more in defense mod. Do not tap all your lands against twin, you will always need mana for dismember, vines, prey upon..
I'm not using treetop anymore. This is my list and I think it is the most solid list that I've ever used (considering that I play with stompy for a year).
Sideboard depends of your meta and I agree with @user_369654 that we miss just one creature card to become competitive again. In my opinion, I'm searching for replace my 3 Kalonian Tuskers, but I still haven't found.
Asking for a friend I'm trying to get into the game; any reason to use Kalonian Tusker over Garruk's Companion? Both die to bolt, but I feel that GC has more going for it with Trample over Tusker's 1 toughness.
Money isn't really an issue (since they're both dirt cheap), but he already has a playset of Companion.

Oath of the Gatewatch; the set that caused the competitive community to freak out over Basic Lands.
Tusker dies to 75% of all removal spells out there, Companion dies to the remaining 25% as well, including random Snapcasters, Bobs, Guides, Pyromancers etc etc. Companion is extremely soft, and it isn't worth the upside of the trample.
ConfusedCactus, any chance you can share your list? I'm thinking of cutting the Kalonian Tuskers down to 2 and adding in 2 Scavenging Ooze and 2 Dungrove Elder (removed 2 Treetop). Kolaghan's Command seems to make Spellskite in this deck a lot worse unfortunately so I'll keep the copies of Kalonian Tusker for now.
A fair bit of the reason I'm running this deck (other than it's relative simplicity and consistency) is value for money. I built this deck having had almost all of the cards lying around already, picked up the Avatars for next to nothing, and played. The only things that cost me much were a couple of Spellskites, which I traded into. One is a foil from New Phyrexia, but I got decent value on a trade for it and I'm happy to have it.
Even if the deck is less well placed than it was, it's still fun to play, even if you're going to lose some of the tougher matchups. I wouldn't consider playing Goyf in this deck unless it was suddenly under $10 - I don't own any copies, and frankly I'm not interested in getting any at the price they are. So much of my enjoyment of Magic is playing and surprising people with a cheap 'underdog' deck, rather than turn up with the most expensive deck and get all mad when I don't win.
Been all day trying to find something that could replace kalonian tusker, but nothing!
I think I'll surrender and put spellskites in theis places, even thinking that spellskite isn't what our deck needs.
Some considerations:
What do you guys think about Renegade Krasis?
Or even mayber replace tuskers for a non-creature spell, like Hardened Scales or Bow of Nylea?
Kalonian Tusker is a solid vanilla creature, there really shouldn't be any reason to replace him, not meta reasons, or budgetary concerns (he's a cheap card). Yes he dies to bolt, but at least he doesn't trade with snapcasters, pestermites, goblin guides, dryad militants, and thalias like Companion. Every time I've played him, it's a noticeable tempo advantage.
Heyo - haven't posted in a while about recent finishes since I've switched to my D&T build with all the big mana decks floating around along with the generally "unfair" feel that modern has atm. Regardless, I think we need Scoozes main in a 21 land list atm, or we just get blown out by the unfair decks. Despite the fact that I love my "clean" 4-of list, I think running 2-3 Scooze alongside 2-3 Tusker is where we want to be atm. Also not sure about Spellskite in the board - I don't like turning on people's otherwise pretty dead Kolaghan's Command.
Hey everyone. I just got back into magic a couple months ago and started to look into modern for the first time as a format to play. As I'm on a budget this seemed like a very good deck to put together for my first modern deck. I took it down to my lgs last friday and went 2-1.
Reverent Hunter was a last minute addition and was really just there to play test it. Other then aspect I wanted a big payoff for are devotion to green and a nice big target for are Rancor's. In the small play test hunter was very good. At worst he was a 4/4 for 3 other times he was a 5/5 or a 7/7 and was actually very good for me the whole day.
Another card I'm thinking of adding is two Mold adder. In a format with lots of blue and black spells running around it may be very good.
Your list looks pretty solid, apart from the fact that its only 59 cards and that your'e running 19 lands - at the very least add 2 lands, cut the Hunters and add a Dismember or another Tusker/Scooze. You are running on fumes with only 19 lands...
I totaly agree with you! I'm very satisfied with no 4 CMC creatures on my list. Spellskite isn't the answer to our deck. I'm running with 20 forests and 1 canopy, but I think I'll replace that canopy for a treetop. And I won't replace tuskers, I will just wait for meta to change, or a new creature for deck, like did Avatar of the Resolute..
So far my favorite alternate 1-drop is Skarrgan Pit-Skulk, and even that is pretty massively outclassed by most of what we run.

“Modern has provided us a non-rotating format that is far more accessible than Legacy or Vintage, but still retains many of the qualities that people enjoy in those formats—such as a more stable metagame, the ability to play and tweak the same deck week after week, and simply a much more powerful card pool than Standard.”

Skarrgan Pit-Skulk is amazing in fast, board spam builds. It's a 2/2 curve filler that buffs Avatar, can't be chumped and can be played on turn 1 if there's nothing else. Great value for 1 mana.
Slaughterhorn is my favorite card that I don't play in the deck. If you're maindecking it, make sure you play at least two copies of Scooze in your maindeck as well, as the synergy is amazing.
Don't like those cards very much. Nettle Sentinel forces you to cast spells at unreasonable times. Young Wolf could be nice (as he pumps your Avatar too), but he's still no Experiment One ^^.
@creamgravy
Skarrgan Pit-Skulk sounds interesting. Might try it out. But it's more like a 2-drop...
No joke about the picture. I got very confused for a moment there.
