hi everyone, new guy on this thread! I have decided for a while i would build this deck, it seems like a really interesting option in the meta and a very different aproach to it, at least compared to what everyone else is doing
I'm sorry if anyone has already suggested this (i really dont want to read 80+ pages to make sure) but could Hooting Mandrils be good enough to consider? assuming you are running a no-scooze version of the deck, and even maybe running some fetches just to get them into the yard? just curious if it might work, as i currently don't have Scoozes to play with.
With everyone obsessed with +1/+1 counters in this deck, and going to questionable places to increase them, maybe it's worth revisiting Hunger of the Howlpack? It's been tested and proven in the deck in the past.
That said, like the streamlined version that plays up Devotion. Looks fun!
ive been looking for additional pump spells to put in my version of stompy. ive kinda torn betweenprimal bellow ,might of masses ,strength in numbers, echoing courage ,? as a possible 2-4 in the deck. also how do you guys feel on burst of strength sb? last modern event i played out i kept getting blown out in my scapeshift match up by cryptic command tapping my duded down pre-combat.
I always liked Slaughterhorn for extra pump...it doubles as extra body or uncounterable Giant Growth on attack that doesn't trigger Eidolon of the Great Revel. That said, with all the pump this thing runs now, do you really need more pump?
Hi was wondering if oran-rief, the vastwood could be used in the competitive version of this deck currently I am looking into getting back into modern from a 2 year absent, found this deck tested it in mtgo and love it haha. With Avatar of the resolute coming out from dragons of tarkir I feel that oran-rief, the vastwood could take a slot in the non basic lands. What do you guys think.
Spellskite is one of my favorite sideboards really is amazing and difficult to remove as it has four toughness, in addition this guy can steal enchantments, I have stolen a Splinter Twin haha. I'd run 1 to 2 Spellskites
The "4-of" list I posted about a week ago - I've been trying to fiddle with the non-basics, and I'm fairly certain that you can now support 2 Treetop and X other non-basics like Horizon, as long as they don't enter tapped.
Im really hang on this topic aswell. More treetops? I feel when we draw too many lands we could play to our advantages on that spot...

it's a possibility you have to deal with in case it happens, especially in a matchup where our life total matters; even so, i wouldn't value having a pain-free mana base that much... in the end, only the last point of life matters.

And you'll have 1 life at the end instead of 0 against that burn deck because you never had to hurt yourself.
Or maybe you were able to draw into that last spell you needed to finish the game because you had Horizon Canopy... really, there's no point arguing on this kind of matter, stating hypothetical game states. And it is not as if we don't have any kind of lifegain in the 75 to help in that specific matchup.
Unless you have a starting hand that requires you to play Horizon Canopy turn 1, wich basically means you're on a one-lander, or you also have a treetop village (wich probably means it's not that great of a starting hand anyway), you usually wont need to pay that much life as the game progresses; this deck is supposed to be able to kill on t4 if it curves out, at wich point you won't care much about losing life vs most matchups, especially if it means giving you more reach for those games where they are able to delay your win for a turn or two. Overall, i think it can be worth the risk running a pair of them, to decrease the chance of having one in the starter and still be likely to appear if the game drags on.
Has anyone had any experience/success with running either GW or GB versions of Stompy? I feel like it may just turn into a worse verison of BG Rock or Hatebears, but I feel like an aggro strat with solid turn 4-7 options as well.
Also, why do people not run Tarmogoyf? Is it too expensive or do people think that it wont get big enough for T3 when we hope to start attacking with it?

It was established earlier in the thread that splashing for B or W would only lead to watered down, far less effective versions of BG, GW, or even Mono G. For the purposes of this deck, we focus strictly on Mono G.
As far as Goyf, for starters, this deck has its roots as a pure budget build. Goyf would be far too expensive for that. Now, while the deck is no longer purely budget, there aren't enough discard effects to grow the Goyf and make him effective. This deck is pure and simple Aggro....play creatures, turn them sideways, play a buff spell at the right time on the right creature
Goyf is worth it, in aggro decks that can destroy artifacts, lands, and enchantments from main board. Here, goyf would be another kalonian tusker, at best, with all our graveyard hate.

Exactly, and maybe not even a KT.
We have no artifacts.
We run almost all basic lands.
We have one enchantment that returns to our hand when the creature dies.
We run 4 x Dryad Militant.
The reason it works so efficiently in GBx decks is that they ideally start with Turn 1 fetch -> Thoughtseize, immediately making 'Goyf a 2/3, which we do neither of.
My last match against a BGx deck I just held back the DM from attacking and his $200 creature sat as a 1/2 while my more efficient creatures beat him down. It's been discussed numerous times and the consensus is always that we are better served with creatures that ETB without conditions to make them powerful.
On another note, I am seriously moving towards lowering the curve of my creatures to all 1/2 2 drops with just 4 Leatherback Baloth to top out. This is my tentative post DTK list:
I'm not convinced I need to run Mutagenic Growth to make Talara's Battalion viable. 4/3 trample for 2 mana is bananas and the condition isn't great as a top deck, but games that could end up grinding out it can be SB'd out for something more appropriate for the match up.
Eh, it's ok. It comes through in a pinch late game against cards like Lili that force creature sac, but I don't like playing it any later than T4, which makes it pretty ineffcient. I run 2, and it's been solid but not great.
What has your experience been with running Talara's Battalion and Mutagenic Growth? Without it, Talara is essentially a 3 drop which isn't effect at dropping your curve very much and I feel we can afford the life loss since the only other slef inflictors is Dismember.

This is my sideboard at the moment, and i need some help to pick the last 3 slots. I looking for the best option possible, not just meta hate!
Oran-rief, the vastwood looks great in the new "garruk's companion/kalonian tusker - soon to be avatar" build.
