I think the addition of avatar changes this deck alot. Now we can run young wolf and geist and swing free with them and not caring about blockers. Testing my list and will post after this weekend
I think it's a mistake to call anything we're doing a midrange strategy because fundamentally the deck is creature based aggro. I've described it to others as 'zoo without the janky manabase and weakness to Blood Moon'. The flavor of aggro seems to depend on people's feelings about their local meta game. My problem with the 1/2 drop approach is that it leaves the deck really weak to Pyroclasm/Forked Bolt type cards, which are readily played online and locally. I also think Leatherback Baloth is one of the best cards this deck can run. Aside from fueling Aspect, burn decks cannot beat that card. We're also fast enough with the traditional build to ignore what a lot of combo decks are doing (I'm thinking of Storm/Scapeshift/Twin) so I don't think the extra speed is worth it.
Avatar of the Resolute is an auto include in this deck moving forward because it provides so much. As I posted yesterday, I think 3 is the right number but would more readily go to 2 before I'd go to 4. 3 toughness does matter. Collected Company deserves to be tested, but I'm not totally sold on it either. I'm also hopeful we might get another goody to test before all is said and done.
This deck really just plays against itself. It doesn't matter if your opponent manaleaks your Tusker on turn two, you'll just drop a leatherback on turn 3. You just need to turn as many things sideways as possible every turn, and then you win
Young Wolf is not a great creature for this deck. It's a 1/1 for one that might die and grow to a 2/2. Dryad Militant takes the gas out of many decks with its static ability, pumps fresh E1s, and has two power for one mana with no strings attached.
Wolf can have synergy with Avatar (what a great card for this deck), but it's certainly not guaranteed. It certainly doesn't help one race any faster, and it's usually the last creature to get blocked.
"But that's when I get crafty and use my pump spells on it!"
You could have done the same thing with the better options and have done more damage.
"But sweepers!"
Relying on an opponent to kill it for it to be worthwhile is a bad strategy for a deck that's trying to damage race. If an opponent casts Pyroclasm, Volcanic Fallout, or a Wrath spell, you keep one more creature than before. How many people are playing these right now? Anger of the Gods still exiles, so that completely busts the strategy. So you have to have them sweep, then drop your Avatar to get maximum value.
At least Pit-Skulk can come down as a 2/2 for one (with an immediate counter) and keep the pressure going. With manlands, Strangleroot Geists, and sheer numbers, this deck really shouldn't be playing a card that is only conditionally potent.
It's incredible to me how almost nobody still understands why Young Wolf is good. Everyone that bashes it should actually play with it first -- the "this card I've never played is awful even though skilled players that have tried it say it's good" shtick is getting old.
They have to kill it twice to stop the damage (and they will do it at least once most of the time - Modern has heaps of removal); when you're in topdeck mode, it means still having a creature on the field when you otherwise wouldn't (this happens all the time); it means using that extra mana you have from not needing to play another creature to replace Wolf because it came back on its own to have another creature or another pump spell, and now it means your Avatar being bigger, and getting bigger more consistently. I recognize the high value of Militant (which needs to be run main or side), but Wolf needs to be considered and respected.
That said, I agree that of course there will be situations where it's just a 1/1. But then there are situations where Ooze is just a 2/2 and Experiment is just a 1/1 and we all still love those. I don't see it happening more often than with those, either.
Why do you talk about sweepers but not spot removal?
Why would an opponent spot remove it when any other creature (besides SRG) would be a better target? If you use Vines of Vastwood, it's irrelevant anyway; if you're using other pump spells, you're still losing them to keep (gasp!) a 2/2 creature. Path is especially bad in this situation. You also didn't address the fact that YW has no synergy with E1 whatsoever unless it has already died; a feat which I disagree with as being common enough at early points in the game to be worthwhile.
I agree that resiliency in this deck is very important, but with the crowded number of slots available in this deck, we can do better here. Why do you assume people who don't agree with you haven't playtested a card? Why do you have such a coarse attitude with everyone you disagree with? Feel free to prove me wrong by posting better results with a YW list in something besides a random MTGO daily. I'd love to be wrong if we can all be better for it.
Does anyone feel that there is any merit to the idea of splashing blue for Cloudfin Raptor and focusing on an evolve/Avatar build? The Johnny in me would love to take it a step further and get Master Biomancer up in here as well, but that's probably stretching it.
I've been a fan of Stompy for a long time and now I can't work out what to do with my useless pod deck I wanted to build Stompy.
I like the look of the lists but wondered if anyone has considered Hero of Leina Tower? One thing I learnt about the deck in the past was that using your mana perfectly is a key to success. The scaleability of the Heroic ability is useful in maximising this? Also its another route to making the new Avatar card effective? Skarrgan Pit-Skulk?
I'm also thinking of splashing black for Putrid Leech and some sideboard cards.
I like the idea of the leech, but what else would we get from a black splash?
I think Avatar might be causing a bit of an over-correction in terms of deck design. It's a strict upgrade over Garruk's Companion, but it is by no means busted.
Regarding DM vs YW, I've tested both and I still prefer DM. It is too good against Lingering Souls and Snapcaster Mage, and completely wrecks Storm, which is not inconsequential. If opponents are spending spot removal on our E1s and DMs, it's less removal they can use later.
Anyone have any thoughts on running a 1-2 CMC build? I was messing around on my phone app. Running 4 of Skarrgan Pit Skulk or Young Wolf in addition to Baloths. We'd have to cut our removal and drop to 21 lands
Essentially
Land
21 Forest
Creatures
4 Dryad Militant
4 Skarrgan Pit-Skulk/Young Wolf
4 Experiment One
4 Strangleroot Geist
4 Avatar of the Resolute
4 Kalonian Tusker/Garruk's Companion
4 Leatherback Baloth
Spells
4 Vines of Vastwood
4 Rancor
3 Aspect of Hydra
Young Wolf vs Skarrgan Pit-Skulk.....I think this a toss up and a personal preference thing. Pit-Skulk is, in my opinion, better simply because of his ability. If he gets buffed early, he can run damage right past those early blockers. He's also gonna get his counter easier. Young Wolf trades kill power for resiliency and with all the cheap removal, this cannot be overlooked. Undying still counts as a 2 for 1 in most situations. His counter is harder to get, however. It may be worth considering running Beast Within again to blow up YWs and Geists for the counter to power up Avatars. Militant is too good not to run, however, as it does boost E1, something Wolf nor Pit-Skulk can do unless their conditions are met.
TL:DR- Militant should stay regardless, Young Wolf or Pit-Skulk, personal preference.
I played a few games with it against a friend in Cockatrice to test how it would work. The premise seems there but it's still very much in the drafting stages.
Initial after-thoughts were that Giant Growths will probably be Prey's Vengeance, up the land count to 17 and adjust the Sideboard to better suit against a wider range of decks.
Can't say, in the 6 games I played (2 best of 3's) he only appeared once and that was to a 1 land hand with it as the only one drop with me on the play.
Obviously it's less than ideal in those situations but it's a large creature for one that can pump E1 over the other 2 P/T one drops.
I'm not sure if anyone realizes this, but running a playset of Militant as well as Undying Wolf is possible. I run Spire tracer at the moment as a test as my second one drop. I'll probably switch it out for Experiment One, but I like trying different cards just for fun.
I'm taking this deck to FNM tomorrow, I'll post results. Pretty excited.
Hello everyone, I've been following this thread for about two weeks now. Last week I bought the cards for the deck, and tonight I was able to play the deck for the first time. Just signed up for the forums to post a tournament recap. I don't play much Modern but I follow the format and tournament scene so I'm pretty aware of the metagame and how most decks function on a cursory level.
Forgive me if the formatting is off. List is the fairly tuned one posted a few days ago.
Sideboard was a bit of a shot in the dark. I had no idea about the local meta and this LGS has only been running Thursday Modern for about 5 weeks, tonight being my first time playing.
22 Player Tournament. 5 rounds.
Result: 4-1 Final. Entered final round as sole undefeated player remaining at 4-0. Deck was a blast to play and caught everyone off guard, nobody expecting a linear creature aggro deck. Quick match summary:
Round 1 vs Splinter Twin 2-0
G1 Play. He keeps a 1 lander and I curve Dryad Militant -> Rancor + 2nd Dryad. He fails to find a land off Serum Visions and scoops.
G2 Draw. I mull to 6. He Bolts my T1 and Spell Snares my Turn 2. He slams a T3 Blood Moon and I respond with a T3 Choke out of my board. Ouch. I alpha striked him a few turns later with 2x kicked Vines on my Garruk Companion and Leatherback Baloth.
Round 2 vs GW Hatebears 2-1 (didnt know much about this deck)
G1 He gets mana screwed and I curve out.
G2 I chip him down 4 after he gets mana screwed for most of the game, only having Noble, Birds, and a Forest. He stabilized and I drew land and pump with no creatures until he swarmed me.
G3 Another straightforward game. Unfortunately his first two lands were 2x Horizon Canopy and he took probably 6 damage from land. Vines saved me from path and I killed him with Aspect on a Companion for 6.
I need to read about this matchup, only sideboard I brought in was Hunt. Hindsight I should have also brought Gutshot for his dorks.
Round 3 vs RW Skred 2-1
G1 He plays Swiftspear, I play E1 -> Strangleroot -> Strangleroot + Rancor. I outrace him and blank his removal with a Vines.
G2 I kept a hand with only 1 creature (Tuskar) which was a huge mistake. He plays Swiftspear and Seeker of the Way, lightning Helix my lone Tuskar, Pyroclasms an Empty Board, and kills me while my hand is full of pump spells. Oh well.
G3 He removes my early threats with bolts. He resolves a T3 Reckoner which I dismember. I play a few creatures and swing into him. He main phase Wear/Tear on my Rancor not realizing that just puts it back in my hand. I replay it next turn and kill him with a big Aspect. He's pretty salty about the Rancor but I just ignored him. "Like, who the **** plays that deck? Seriously! I have nothing to use against your deck, I play 4 Blood Moons mainboard against your ******* forests." lol. PJSalt.
Round 4 vs Esper Control 2-1
G1 My hand was picked apart by IoK x2 and a Thoughtseize first two turns. I have no gas and just get 1 for 1 removal on my guys until he Lingering Souls x2 + Sorin Lord of Innistrad emblem beats me to death.
G2 Grinded him down with great draws. He IoK T1 and takes my Scooze. I slowly beat him down with Rancor on two different creatures and his tokens are useless.
G3 We both mull. I end up with a not great but playable hand. 2 Dismember, rancor, E1, and two forests. I draw the 3rd dismember. Thankfully I did because I used all three. I killed his T3 Monastery Mentor and his T4 Tasigur. All I have on board is an unevolved E1 suited up with two rancor. I do 10 damage with that E1 before he paths it. He casts Timely Reinforcements twice and I grind down his tokens plus removal for a number of turns. He plays around the two forests I'm holding back until I draw Rancor and Leatherback Baloth. I play the Baloth and leave mana up. He taps out for Sorin and makes a token, which I trample over for the win next turn.
4-0 Sole Undefeated going into Round 5.
Round 5 vs Burn 0-2
G1 He sticks Eidolon and I chip away at myself just playing cards. I have the cards to put him to 2 from 14 but would die on the crackback regardless. Perhaps should have just gone for it and swing because I was likely dead anyways.
G2 I board in my lifegain, 2 Finks and 2 Feed the Clan. I keep a slower hand w/ 2x Finks and no two drops. He deals 4 with Goblin Guide + Bolts before I resolve first Finks. He suspends rift bolt and passes with two open mana -_-. I draw Feed the Clan, knowing no matter which I play it's getting skullcracked. Sure enough he responds with skullcrack, untaps and 4x Bolts me for GG.
Pretty weak ending to a fun night but it's to be expected vs burn I think. I came second overall, 1st was the Esper player I beat in R4. Not bad for first time piloting Stompy in an unknown meta. Sorry if my tournament report was convoluted or unnecessary, I've never written one before but it helps me when I read others reports so maybe this will help someone. I'll take better notes next time so I can give exact spell breakdowns and lines of play.
Thoughts: Deck is awesome! Rancor is probably MVP of this deck. It just does so much work and won me about half my games. Rancor on Strangleroot is hilarious because nobody wants to remove him without Path (of which he ate many tonight).
Aspect of Hydra was great, cast it for 3-4 consistently and few times for 6-7. I was using it more for removal protection and killing blockers than as a finisher. Vines adds a lot of depth to the deck, saving our creatures and making things very hard for our opponents. I played it without kicker plenty of times to blank removal.
The deck is tight and I can't wait for Avatar of the Resolute to add to this deck. Unbeknownst to me it was a great metagame deck, the room trended slower with 3+ Scapeshift, 3+ Twin decks, an assortment of control and Abzan, so linear aggro was very effective. Nobody was prepared and I blanked a lot of sideboards. Who knows if that will be the case next time I play.
Half the sideboard was pretty useless in my store, the enchant hate and artifact hate had no targets but c'est la vie. Thats's an aspect I have to work on, in a few matches I was unsure what to take out or put in. Need to practice and get more familiar with the deck. I made a few poor mulligan decisions w/ keeping some slow hands.
Overall it was a very fun deck to pilot and very cheap! To quote my round 5 opponent: "So you're like, a fair infect deck or something?" haha. I won back half the cost of my deck tonight in store credit so it's already paying off. Great starter deck for modern that I plan to practice with more and improve.
Cheers. Thanks to the people in this thread for the inspiration.
TL;DR: 4-1 22 person modern event first time playing deck. Second Place overall. 4-0 vs Twin, GW Hatebears, Skred R/W, Esper Control. Lost to Burn in finals.
