Relentless has one major downside. Whichever way you go, he still dies to a lightning bolt. Might not be the end of the world, but still annoying. Thrun and Relentless sounds like a nice pair, let me know how he works out for you. Dont go over 10 pump maindeck, or you will start drawing threat-light hands. What Fezvezz said - Beast Within really only serves as an emergency brake, and I don't like building Stompy that way.
Well, this was what I was looking at. I wasn't too sure about Beast Within, either (never liked it in 1v1), but it seemed like people were having good results with it. Ah well.
Hey guys,
I've been watching the thread for quite some time as i found the pieces and began to construct the deck.
Last friday I took the list to my local FNM(my first). Overall, despite my mistakes the deck performed very well.
I finished 2-2.
2-0 Mill
Overall just too fast and they had no answers...
0-2 GW Aggro
Nearly won game one but couldnt swing through his creatures to finish him off. Game 2 was a similar result
1-2 Meleria Pod
Game one Stompy was just too quick. Game 2 was the opposite, with a quick inf. life combo. Game 3, had to mull to 5 and was hit with inquisition soo yeah...
2-0 UWR Control
Both matches they could not keep up and I had vines and baloths all day...
I ran a fairly stock list with no sideboard.
I have decided against Garruk as a 1 of and replaced him with a 2nd Thrun.
I actually love beast within not only as removal but as an interesting combo with Strangleroot as well as hitting my own creatures in response to removal.I love the versatility that it provides.
Lastly, Aspect of Hydra absolutely blows people out when it is cast at the right time...
Thanks to everyone who has been active in this thread I love the deck and am stoked to be apart of the modern format and community.

While I agree with the Geist trick, I would like to say that it is just better to cast a 3 CMC creature like Baloth or Dungrove Elder, rather than play 3 mana to see your opponent spell fizzle and get a 3/3. Basically, playing Beast Within this way is just like playing a flash'ed Kalonian Tusker
I was just using this as an example that attests to the amount of versatility that Beast Within can provide. However, my thought process is against a deck G1 without too many targets that would required removal, so lets say UWR control, the beast within will sit in my hand. The conflict between the decks is between the stompy player attempting to maintain a solid board position while the UWR control player attempts to diminish that state. Therefore, causing their spell to fizzle and leaving behind a 3/3 to maintain the pressure seems like a decent use of the card. Maybe I am wrong but thats just how I see it.
The GW Aggro deck looked liked the result of death and taxes and stompys one night stand. It was running Aven Mindscensor and Leonin Arbiter as well as Loxodon Smiter, Wilt-Leaf Liege and Quasali Pridemage(The bane of my existence) and noble hierarch. I do not remember seeing a Voice of Resurgence and I am only half sure that he was also running Dismember in addition to Path of Exile. I am not sure if this is a brew or an established deck. I would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me.
The issue I had with the match-up was I wasn't quite quick enough to finish him off before his board developed and did not draw into any removal. Eventually, it reached a stale-mate until he eventually won out.
I would like to mention that I am a long time pauper stompy player and awhile back I made an attempt to convert that list to the modern format. It resembles the more causal hyper aggro list found within this primer. Love this archetype and green in general.
Also, for anyone curious here is the deck I am running:

Could you expand a bit more on what this GW aggro deck is? Probably a homebrew, but I am curious. Is it based on Wilt leaf liege, or is it an aggro version of hatebear? (Voice of Resurgence comes to mind)
You can always play it on your rancor EOT if you fear creature removal. Or if you need that 3/3 body desperately: Forest-to->BEAST.

Quick question, could Sword of War and Peace be a thing? It could possibly take the Beast Withinslot as a 2-of for those who are not a fan of the card.
Swords are not always viable in my opinion. I have tested them out and found them much too slow almost always.
Fire and Ice/War and Peace can be good against Delver/Burn but U/R Delver and Burn are actually one of the easier match ups for this deck save double flipped delver or double eidolon. I would say it's more of a meta call. I play in a Pod/Affinity/Control heavy meta so swords won't be good for me.
I have also found Garruk Relentless very weak and slow as well. The impact he makes is very weak and the pressure he provides takes too long to be relevant.
The GW aggro list you lost to is simple Hate Bears and is decent. It has more tools than this deck does.
Also why does everyone have Skylasher and Creeping Corrosion... I don't know about you, but if affinity is letting me cast Creeping Corrosion without mana dorks, then he's not the best affinity player.
How many do you use? I'd only use 1, maybe 2, and probably just sideboard. They are slow but I think it's fine if you use them in very small quantities; it's just for grindy games which go slow anyway.
Had a long discussion with local players about the Affinity matchup, and the problem seems to be, that allowing that deck to goldfish, while being on the draw, will almost always result in a loss, even with a turn 4 Corrosion on time. I am simply having trouble applying enough pressure to the Affinity player to force the pace of the game - seems every game where I am on the draw, and about half on the play, they are in the driver's seat. On a sidenote, them playing Ensoul Artifact makes the matchup a tiny bit easier assuming Dismember main and Deglamer board. I think one of the reasons for Affinity being such a poor matchup is the fact, that all of their "bombs" actually affect us - Master, Champion, Ravager, Plating. Unlike other decks, ALL of these cards mean trouble.
The way to fight the deck IMO seems to be hitting them all along the curve. Only hitting them at 4 with Corrosion is not enough. Gut Shot, Dismember, Deglamer into Corrosion could be enough. Another weapon could be Ratchet Bomb, but I think it's probably too slow - anyone tried it?
You cant sideboard all those cards for the affinity match up only. You need to have the gut shots main. There are three affinity players in my meta and they fear and respect my deck as much as I theirs. Their advantages to me are that they can have a more flexible sideboard as they have access to all colors thanks to drum, glimmervoid, and mox opal. And secondly, they have access to a cheap draw spell to which they can spare slots as they run less lands than us.

2 Gut Shot, 2 Deglamer, 1 Corrosion doesn't sound like over-sideboarding to me. If I replace Tactics with another Corrosion, that's six cards - I really don't want Dryad Militant and Thrun in this matchup. I am loathe to give up Affinity completely, as that pretty much guarantees no new major Top 8's for Stompy I can accept giving up Bogles and Enchantress and such, because they represent such a small portion of the meta, but not Affinity.
4 Experiment One
4 Kalonian Tusker
4 Leatherback Baloth
2 Scavenging Ooze
4 Strangleroot Geist
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
2 Beast Within
2 Dismember
1 Garruk Relentless
4 Rancor
4 Vines of Vastwood
2 Treetop Village
Now I'm not too sure what to do with those Beast Within slots. A 2nd Garruk? Not sure.

I never thought of that! I cannot wait to do that to someone. This is why I adore Beast Within o.o

Gut Shot main could be viable in this new meta.
