I actually like batterskull a lot more than baneslayer angel in the deck. blood baron could possibly be a good choice too though. Batterskull is a great topdeck while both players are hellbent and incredibly resilient to removal. You can also "Build a Baneslayer" by suiting up a lingering souls token. I originally was playing dega for ajani vengeant and lightning bolt and double white was the worst part of baneslayer. Having a batterskull instead makes him always castable when you hit 5 mana. That being said I have 1 flex slot in my list for a bigger finisher than brimaz and it really could be anything at all. I've even considered going down to 3 lillys and cutting batterskull for 2x bloodgift demon. Arena on a 5/4 is pretty strong it turns out but this deck bleeds itself so much you need some kind of life gain and vault isn't good enough by itself in my opinion.

I've read the whole thread and one thing i really missed is a GENERAL SIDEBOARD GUIDE.
Yesterday playtesting against a Melira Pod variant(my first time, remember, i'm entering into Modern), with a 3-2 in my favor after winning games just for landing Pack Rat and making tokens(it dodges Orzhov Pontiff, Shriekmaw, Nekrataal). Never get a clear idea of how board that match: +Stony Silence?, +Disenchant?, +Damnation?

I'm really surprise reading side out Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek against Jund/GB.

Can anybody help with this?, i think we should take Chris's(immapwner) list for reference.

You want to take out your discard spells against GB/X because the first few turns are always discarding threats, playing creatures, having them die, and killing your opponents creatures and almost always the game state ends up with both players in topdeck mode. And in that situation, you don't want to be drawing discard spells, you want threats that force your opponent to draw into an answer or else die.

Against pod, damnation is really good, you definitely want that. I also always side in disenchant since it's so important to kill a pod. Stony silence is a little weaker but I wouldn't say boarding into it is wrong. As for cards to take out against them, Liliana is pretty bad, and you can take out some amount of discard as well (IoK should probably be the first discard spell to go since it can't rip a Pod).

The hardest part about GB and jund to me is that none of our SB is particularly useful either. I run what I consider to be the budget version of immapwnrs SB with a wrath of god for one damnation and the rain of tears for fulminator so the strategy for me is exactly the same. rest in peace is pretty good for shutting off goyf and lingering souls if they play it, otherwise it kinda backfires as far as souls goes but is probably still worth it. leyline of sanctity is ok as it stops their discard and both of lili's minuses but we cannot mull to 4 like against burn to assure we get one without getting beaten to death and they are much less useful when not in the opener. Also it is possible GB and jund may SB out of some of the discard similar to how we do. damnation/wrath of god is probably our best option against them as far as board options. This is the one match where I believe rain of tears is much worse thanfulminator mage. Mage can be a threat late game and can easily be traded for a treetop village but rain of tears does not come with any pressure which is a must in the matchup.

All that considering I usually only cut 4-5 cards for the matchup so some amount of thoughtseize is left in my final match.

I actually leave in the pinpoint discard vs jund. I take out 2 of my lillys though. Stripping an opponent of an early goyf or abrupt decay can be huge. Also since we have rat it isn't as dead.

So I have been looking for a new deck to play in a meta where affinity and UWR are the two most played decks and that would reward me for being well versed in modern. I aimed for a consistent, skill intensive challenging deck that would better me as a player, and is something that is very good and midrangey overall. I think this is the deck for me! Questions: What are your tips for general sideboarding as that is my weakness. I know when things go in but not things that go out. Also, what to you guys is the ideal list and why? What are the bad MUs assuming I am an amazing DGA player and I know the weaknesses of almost every deck in the meta of modern?(at this point I am close to that haha) If I have questions about the answers given I will let you guys know! Thanks guys!

Immapwner's list located on page 10 (I think) is the only one of us to win a PTQ and his list should be looked at as the budgetless stock list. I got 5th place in a PTQ with a list that was about $400 dollars cheaper but even on an unlimited budget my list would be 3 or 4 cards different than his.

Against most decks certain removal spells are not useful (like darkblast or smother) and can be sided out for specific hate. If a deck has a ton of removal I usually side out tidehollow scullers. Against faster decks liliana is usually not great. My best advice would be to play around with the deck some and see what match ups in particular are giving you issues but the past 5 or 6 pages has some good discussion of SBing and I would recommend looking it over and coming back with some more specific examples.

As far as good matchups go this deck gives me the feeling that no matter what I am sitting down across from I have a chance to win the match. In a tournament of 8 or 9 rounds it is crucial that you can put up a fight against anything. Of particular notice I find out tron, scapeshift, and affinity matchups to be favorable over the course of 3 rounds. Weaknesses I would say are burn, pod and jund variants. Pod attacks from a lot of angles and puts pressure on our removal while Jund plays a similar game to us and can easily out threat us. Burn can be a problem (it is what I lost to in the top 8, I only had 1 leyline) for us if you choose to go the no leyline route. I don't think any of our weaknesses are worse than a 40/60 matchup but they are bad matches because even with your best hand they aren't much better than a 50/50 toss up. Since the games go long against Jund and GB variants the opener is not as important as your first few draws are, first few turns are crucial here.

1 halo and stony silence are the loose cards that I will remove for 2 Graf diggers cage, depending on the meta . Leyline of Sanctity is also an option.

Quick SB Guide

So I'm gearing up for the Modern portion of the SCG Open in DC this week and I'm gonna be playing Deadguy. I've gone 9-2-1 with this list over my last few LGS modern events so I'm feeling pretty good about the list. The only thing I'm gonna change is adding a Celestial Purge to the sideboard because Keranos seems to be a big thing in a lot of decks now and that guy is a beating against us. So this is probably what I'm gonna be sleeving up.



Pack Rat is an insane card, I'm really surprised people don't play it more often in modern (although it does seem to be getting a little more run recently). I've definitely won more than a few games by just pumping out rats and having a Mutavault. I'm probably a little biased since it's my favorite card in modern, but Obliterator has also been nuts. Every time I've resolved it in a game that's close, it has completely turned the tide and won me the game and it feels like the narrow list of cards that can get it off the board are a little underplayed in Modern right now (for example, Path isn't really played much in Pod anymore and U/W/R seems to be on the down swing). It's certainly not unbeatable and the strain it puts on the mana base is real, but I really like how it's performed. Of particular note is its ability to sit back and hold back an entire army of Pod creatures or a couple Goyfs while you poke the opponent to death with Spirit tokens or pump out rats.

Hey everyone I'm going to work on writing a primer for this deck. I'll probably post it in the next few days and I'd like to get some feedback on it as well.

I love this deck, but I have been doing horrible with it, 3-7 as of last Saturday. I'm running the blade splicer list and my lost mu's have been the following:
2x ru delver
1x ruw control
1x jund
1x affinity
1x bogles
1x rabble red + lightning bolt

This might not be the deck for me, lol

Is Patrician's scorn the go to boggles SB card? I have played 3 boggles decks in the last 8 matches at FNMs and have lost 2 of the 3. Discard helps a ton, but having all of your removal blanked is killer. (Damnation/Wrath of God is too late at T4 because they usually have a totem armor)

I find lilly and discard are enough vs boggles. I bring in my disenchants for coronet and leyline though...

Seems you may want to try the baneslayer angel route that quite a few of us have been pushing. Life gain helps in almost all of those matches as does the big body. The testing certainly helps, I am glad to see people trying phyrexian obliterator and restoration angel but I tested about 30 games with angel and splicer and I wasn't super impressed.

I will probably start doing a 1/1 split of brimaz, king of oreskos and mirran crusader since I have never really been sold on brimaz but I still want something that doesn't just die to anger of the gods. (And I only have one Brimaz)

Hero of Bladehold perhaps? That card has potential to be a blowout if you've churned out some spirits.

Hero of Bladehold can't be hitted by Abrupt Decay and Inquisition of Kozilek, Brimaz, King of Orezcos fails this test(yes, can be played one turn earlier, but my Brimaz don't survive against The Rock/Jund decks.

So what do you guys think might be better in our deck? Phyrexian obliterator or baneslayer angel?
