Stonecloaker is one of the clunkier cards in the deck, most of us have trimmed it down to 1-2 or dropped them.
Serra Avenger doesn't do anything. It's a concession to the fact that we do actually need to win the game. It's pretty hard to find a more efficient beater than Avenger.
Against Storm, Thalia + Canonist is the best option. 7-8 between them should be enough. Canonist is has other splash uses such as against cascade. It's much better than Angel's Grace (far too narrow) and Thorn (we have Thalia). The fact that it can beat for 2 is icing, since we do need to kill Storm before they find their Echoing Truth.
@Cybren: If you're expecting a lot of aggro, I'd take out the maindeck canonist and put in Jotun Grunt. Thalia should be maindeck too.
Serra Avenger is just a dude(chick I guess) and doesn't do much for the actual strategy of the deck. Stone Cloaker is clunkier than you think and I wouldn't be running more than 1-2. And Unless you really expect an aggro dominated metagame I would probably only play 3 Finks in the main. These changes would allow you to fit thalia in as a 3 of for the MD, and add a 3rd Mindsensor.
As for the SB, against storm, thorn of amethyst is uaully better than angel's grace, and also can help in your control matches, and I'm not sure revoker is actually going to do anything. Since we cut a Finks, add it to the SB along with a Timely Reinforcements?
The main reason I run Revokers sb is to counteract planeswalkers and atog scares me. Other than that, he's pretty good about shutting off random abilities here and there, like cranial plating or engineered explosives. I'm probably going to shift him to pithing needles, though, because when I'm looking to hatef*** something, I don't care if it has a body nor do I want it to be so easy to remove.
On the Serra Avengers, it doesn't matter if she is trixie like the rest of the deck: she's the clock. In your advice, you'd have both Canonist and Thalia MD, which seems like over doing it. I'd definitely have Thalia in there over Canonist, but I wouldn't run Canonist over Avenger.
I do agree on cutting 1 Stonecloaker and 1 Finks to increase the number of Mindcensors, though.
My comments are just to do with the SB. Against which decks would you side in Day of Judgement? What situations would Brave the Elements be used for? And why the singleton of Divine Offering?
Day of Judgement my thoughts were if we were playing vs a fast affinity deck with lots of artifact creatures to wipe their board state. Actually going to change this to Wrath of God
The 1 Divine offering my thought was just extra removal vs Melira and Affinity decks.
If you want to use avenger just as your clock, along with Student, then I can agree keeping her, but keeping her as a 4 of. I also agree that of the two thalia should be main and the cannonist sb. I don't however think that 3 thalia and 3 cannonist are nearly enough to beat storm. I would want another 2-3 cards which is why I suggested the thorns.
yah that's martyr proc / soul sisters. nice to see a new guy in the thread though.
so, anyways, i might be going to a PTQ for PT Barcelona, on the 25th. correct me if i'm wrong, but i think it is a modern tourney. if it is, i will play this deck, and keep you guys updated.
EDIT: oh wait it isn't modern is it. it seems to be block constructed / booster draft.
EIDT#2: wait no the PTQ is modern... but the PT isn't? i'm confused, if anyone cares to help that would be great. i'm new to PTQs and PTs.
Being the creator of the deck and the primer, i'm touched. I hope you like it, it's a fun and good deck, but it does take skill and practice to play correctly. Don't be surprised if you have really mixed results as you start testing.
Just gotta say that I've been playing with 3 MB Thalia's the last couple weeks and she has been absolutely stellar! My meta is more combo/control oriented so I'm very tempted to play her as a 4-of in my deck. She is clearly a problem for my opponents and I'm never unhappy to see her. Even in multiples she can be chumped to make room for the next Thalia, but she's usually first to go when the opponent draws removal.
Hi guys,
i have my Death and Taxes deck almost complete, but i can't get Kitchen Finks anywhere and price from abroad is huge... has anyone of you successfuly replaced it? And with what? Thanks a lot!
I am using decklist from the first page, ww variant.
People have used Aven Riftwatcher or Lone Missionary. Or you can main deck Jotun Grunt. All of these aren't terrible replacements for a temporary fix, but they're definitely not as good because persist is huge...

I think your best bet is MD grunt, though nothing can really serve the same purpose. Finks is amazing at holding off aggro because:
a) It gives you life when played.
b) it has enough power to kill any aggro creature it blocks
c) will come back after it has been destroyed- meaning you killed one of theirs and they have not killed one of yours.
d) more life gain when it comes back.
It is really an aggro stopping machine that would be hard to equal.
Grunt is big, which will mean it can exchange with aggro, but it is so big that they will only attack in to it if they have much greater numbers. It does a great job of neutering graveyard strategies (which are extremely common) but will eventually run out of steam in most games. I love it, but I love it in addition to Finks not in place of.
finks doesn't kill goyf, but yes, most other guys he can kill when he blocks.
not to mention he can be good as a beater, and they have to deal with him twice. more than once i've played against something such as restore balance combo, and he comes back after the wrath for more, which is sweet.
as for replacements... nothing i'd bring to a tourney. the three mentioned before are your best bets though.
I've been finding myself wishing for some form of card draw. This would mean splashing in to blue, black or green. Muldrifter comes to mind, as does dark confidant. Anyone else tried anything for a little card advantage? I find myself running out of steam. Vials would make splashin a creature for draw fairly easy.

You could just buy 4 Horizon canopy, regardless of whether or not you splash green.

Brave the elements would be protection from burn decks.
I haven't had much playtesting yet. I just put it together last night. I'd ultimately like to get a Kitaki, War's Mage, but they're like 20$ on MTGO.
