Yeah, getting 6U plus enough to Sunrise is an achievement in itself. You're never going to cast it for its overload cost.
Any other bounce spell is as good as Truth against Twin/Pod - you bounce in response to Kiki activation or Twin enchant.
Truth really shines when your opponent slams down 2 Relic of Progenitus with a smug face.
While you are correct about responding to the activation, you must know that some opponents will wait until they have double exarch or double pestermite in play before attempting splinter twin - even so, you might say "just wait for them to announce twin, and bounce..." however, you can often win by just truthing at their end step before the turn they try to go off, and go off on their turn. Obviously, this is assuming the game has gone into turn 6 or 7, but it does happen. Echoing Truth is strictly better in most situations because it provides the opportunity to severely punish cards played in multiples for the same mana cost as other bounce spells.
I think it's better for the mirror, actually - EOT, I bounce your stars, or spheres, etc. They can still respond, but it does put pressure on them if you do it turn two on the draw. Its real potential shines more often in game 2's against double stony silence, as people will actually drop multiples of it, I find, whereas they will save relic or crypt until they can drop and pop. Bad opponents are the only ones that drop multiple relics or crypts. In that light, you could also use leave no trace for matchups where you know you might see rest in peace and stony silence at the same time, for example. As for replacements for Echoing Truth, I currently feel that you should be playing 3 - 4 copies in your board, period. At its current price point, I don't see a need for a "budget" alternative. Cyclonic Rift is cute, but it doesn't have truth's ability to punish set-ups and bad plays, and rift's overload ability is (mostly) irrelevant for most games at 7 cmc.
In mirror I never side in Echoing Truth (maybe 1 in case of Leyline).
On turn 2 u want to play eggs to have an opportunity to draw cards during oponents loops. For mirror well timed Silence (for example in response to Bloom suspend trigger or in response to Reshape if an opponent doesn't have mana to cast Sunrise) is the best answer.
Good will be Blind Obedience and Nihil Spellbomb, but personally I don't like that cards.
For some reason I can not find izzetmage's "new" primer for Eggs so I find it appropriate to post here. On May 2 I played Eggs at my local Modern tournament 1 day before the official banning of Second Sunrise. Call me old fashioned but I have played combo (be it Legacy or Modern) for about 5 years and have become quite sufficient at it. It just seems suiting that I post a Top 4 tournament result with this deck the very day before the key card got banned. And pointlessly, here is the deck I was playing (no card tags):
4x Chromatic Sphere
4x Chromatic Star
4x Conjurer's Bauble
4x Lotus Bloom
4x Serum Visions
4x Sleight of Hand
4x Reshape
4x Second Sunrise (Peace out Buddy)
4x Faith's Reward
2x Elsewhere Flask
2x Gigadrowse
1x See Beyond
1x Laboratory Maniac
1x Wargate
4x Scalding Tarn (Would have split U fetches but I don't have Misty)
4x Ghost Quarter
1x Hallowed Fountain
8x Island
SB
4x Echoing Truth
3x Tempest of Light (Boggle is a problem in my meta)
3x Hurkyl's Recall (I know it seems odd but Affinity/Robots is Rampant)
2x Gigadrowse
2x Silence
1x Pyrite Spellbomb
Round 1 - GB Tron (Really???)
g1 - I get Bloom suspended on turn 1 and an Egg. The turn before Bloom becomes active he plays Engineeded Explosives at 0 ... I don't have enough mana to keep it alive. During my upkeep I Sunrise/Reward twice before the activation w/ 2 Eggs in play and a fetch but ... nada. The rest of the game he keeps me off Blooms because for some unknown reason I can not draw Reshape to save my live and after a 3x Oblivion Stone draw I can't ever really assemble the combo. For the record ... I drew 5x Lotus Blooms that game, since I play See Beyond I can shuffle a draw in ... yep, drew it yet again, luck owns me.
g2- Went to time. I was trying to fight through Relics and Oblivion Stones backed by Karn killing my Islands. Seriously, I just did not draw well and when time was called (why SS is banned) I had a Lab Man in hand that would delay his Wurmcoil Engine killing me.
Round 2 - R/G Tron
g1 - This is what I am talking about, he knows what he is playing against and never sees the Relic. I easily combo out on turn 5 and he scoops after I have like 15x cards in hand.
g2 - Basically the same thing as game 1, I boarded in E Truth but it didn't matter, I kept him off Tron for a few turns then comboed off around turn 5-7.
Round 3 - UB Control
g1 - I mull to 5 and he has 3x Duress and relevant cards .... luck ftw.
g2 - He boards in Pithing Needle and names Lotus Bloom and Chromatic Sphere ...... I easily combo out on turn 7ish. Seriously, I just got bad hands and draws.
g3 - I boarded out all but 1x Conjurer's Bauble (because he know knows what to PNeedle) and keep the same board. In the end he has 3x Pithing Needles on: Elsewhere Flask, Conjurer's Bauble, and Scalding Tarn ... It didn't matter, his deck had no real clock and after attacking with Creeping Tar Pit numerous times I tapped him out of blue sources at low life and won (had I drawn a god damn Ghost Quater it would be different) but I rarely draw relevant cards. It should be noted that this game went to time (even though both games I won I showed him the win) ...... he made me play it out. This is exactly why SS got banned; my turn went 7ish mins after time was called .... I was no about to make an error after I knew I had the win.
Top 8
UB Teferi Control
g1 - I win on turn 6-7 after Bloom has hit the board and I am capable of Gigadrowsing all his blue lands on my main (since Teferi is in play) and comboing off (it was super tight).
g2 - I mull to 6 and am never really in the game. t5 Teferi shuts me up and 2x Shadow of Doubt just crush me and my double Sunrises.
g3 - I am not to optimistic. I am playing against a counter deck with Shadow of Doubt in the board .... I will save the small details but it got down to this, I ran out his first SoD and first 3x Mana Leaks and around turn 10 I had a board state of 7 lands (fetch, Ghost Quarter, Hallowed Fountain and 4 Islands), 4 Eggs, and a hand of: 1x Silence, 1x Faith's Reward, 1x Gigadrowse ..... I was at 5 life when he swung with Snapcaster Mage, Venser, and Creeping Tar Pit .... I was able to tap down his Tar Pit and all blue sources at EOT .... this is as tight as it gets ... I am at 1 life and have 1 turn to live. I draw a Sphere and declare "eggs is about to lose" since at my card shop everyone hates the deck and splits the top 4 prize pool (as they should.) I say to my opponent after missing on the first 4 egg draws " I have 4 chances to draw Reshape and Sunrise in that order" ..... first card I draw is a Reshape and I kid u not, after I Reshape Chromatic Star the 3rd card IS a Second Sunrise. I could not believe my fortune, I played out the deck exactly as I had goldfished it so many times before.
What a shame it goes away but ... at the same time, it has the ability to beat everything in the format!
Well, nice work DCI!! It is way easier to ban the key-card of a deck, than make a new special rule isn't it? (For example: "Players may not play more than 5, 10 -or X- spells per turn, during the last five additional turns"
or:
"a turn cannot last more than 2' on the last 5 turns of a game, when time is up".)
And perhaps the players will adapt and buy something new, right? Well guess what. You have at least one dissapointed guy here. I decided to start building the deck when Faith's Reward was printed - and thank you for that Wizards! But now I won't buy a new deck. Cause I'm all out of gum. I'll keep playing less Modern perhaps with Eggs and Ninjas. I won't spend more bucks on Tier 1 Magic, if $200, hours of reading and testing, go down the drain like that. Maybe I'll play more RftG.
And imagine that I am not that experienced with Eggs. I just started Modern some months ago. You think players who spent tons of time on Eggs are enjoying this?
An entire budget-and-good-Tier deck crippled....unless you offer a good (and cheap) solution to this on M14.
But in order to see that solution card printed, maybe I have to wait X more years like I did with Slivers(about time!!), and like I still do with Ninjas.
Anyway. I learnt about the ban yesterday, and I was planning to continue play-testing Eggs after my exams. I just wanted to state my huge dissapointment. Maybe here on mtgsalvation I'll be heard, or maybe someone will show me where my logic errs.
[And for the love of Venus. Start reprinting more!! Reprint the fetchlands, asap. Players will get more into the game if the prices drop, and they have 20 decks worth 50 dollars each, than 2 decks worth 500$ each!]
Ergo, I fear that even if we make Eggs viable again somehow, they'll possibly ban something else too, if the new version doesn't win with a faster combo off turn.
So I have a single question for the more experienced here: Isn't Codex Shredder a rough first solution to this?
I'm quoting Lectrys below. We just have to rely on Faith's Reward and think of ways to fetch it.
Okay it's not that powerful, but i strongly believe we have to focus on a briefer win-turn if we want to help Eggs survive.
So this is the story, I played second sunrise the last modern season. When this season started I was afraid that I should build another deck to play until Conley Woods article was posted on channel Fireball. I started to test the new version of "Eggs" (I believe that Second sunrise is not a good name for the deck right now ) with some particular changes to the decklist. Providign I am an experienced player of this kind of deck, while maybe I am not the best player, I consider myself as a good "eggs" player. I have to say thar I had very good results on my local tournaments and FNMS. Finished second and third on two (20ppl) consecutive tournaments.
The last saturday I encouraged myself and went to play one of the biggest events here in Argentina. A Modern GPT with 221 players. I finished 62nd having a 5-3 record. I have to say that Modern has a very good level of players here, and the metagame is similar to the last Grand Prixes...
A few comments of the changes I made to Woods list:
1) First of all I consider Banefire a better finisher than the grinding station. In this deck you always win with ironworks in play, and I play a copy of conjurers bauble for infinite mana or infinite banefire plays if there is a spellskite in play. These two are strightly better than grinding station+that artifact creature.
2) I just like to play silence main because it can help us against control in first match and hopefully, as it happened on my final round, can help us not dying.
3) I dont have a Mox opal
Here is my report:
1) Melira Pod
First match I had to mull to 5. Never draw the second land and eventually lost.
Second match he podded for kataki on third turn and left me without eggs. He then podded it for finks and attacked me some turns. On his last turn he thoughtseized me lefting me with only mana generators and 3 reshapes in hand. Ironically I topdecked banefire and could add 11 mana to kill him (he was at 8 lives)
Third match I couldnt draw a 4th land on my 3 consecutive draws, so couldnt play ironworks and lost.
Sideboarded +2 pithing needle +2 echoing truth

2) RG Tron
I have to say that I lost this round because I sideboarded very bad.
First game he restarted the game with Karn liberated, exiling a wurmcoul from his hand (next turn I was drping two suspended lotus bloom). Ironically if I had draw the fourth land on the restart I would have won that game.
The second match I won easily.
The third match I made my worst error, didnt change my wincon... He played slaughter games for Banefire and I lost the game.
Sideboarded +2 pithing needle +2 echoing truth

3) Jund with w splash
This two matches were great for me. He just started the most aggresive he could but couldnt kill me before turn 4... I comboed easily.
Second match I had to bounce a stony silence.

4) Rakdos with w splash
He was too fast. He killed me both games on turn 3...

I won 2-0 comboing very well on turn 4 both games.

6) UW delver
I knew this could be one of the most difficult match ups maybe. It wasnt. My opponents did not know very good my deck. Also he mulled to 4 on first game.
Second game he started with stony silence shutting down my lotus bloom and my 2 darksteel citadels. Hopefully I draw another adarkar wastes and could play my defense grid. On my last turn bounced with echoing truth his stony silence and comboed.

7) Kiki Pod
I have a pretty good matchup against pod decks. They only have 2 potential responses: Glen elendra or kataki. I won the two games very easily with helpo of my pithing needles.
Sideboard: Same as against melira pod
4-3
8) INFECT
The worst matchup. First game he mulled to 6 and stayed with only one land. He dropped the 0/1 first turn, then a 1/1 artifact with infect on second turn. He only had one land. He played gitaxian probe at me and passed. On my turn I was with a cromatic star, 2 citadels and adarkar wastes in play (lb suspended for 1 more turn). Played thoughtcast and draw silence. On his upkeep i casted silence with my star and the mana I had untapped. He response with 3 pump spells (one with landfall) and infected me for 8. I won on my next turn.
Second match he mulled to 5 and I stayed with a hand with 2 spellskites
Sideboard: +2 Spellskite +1 Echoing truth +1 Wipe Away
5-3
While I missplayed badly on round 2, I belive i finally did a good tournament. The deck was not a tier 1 but it is a very good choice to play. I find it has good matchups against pods, jund, rg tron, midrange decks, and some other comboes. It has very bad matchup only against infect and against turn 3 kill with creatures decks like the rakdos or RG aggro decks. It has difficult match ups against heavy counterspell decks but you can do better with the sideboard. Against scapeshift and UR twins is very even.
Also most of the decks doesnt play rest in peace anymore and less copies of stony silence.
On the bad we are slower to combo.
Well I hope it works for you, I believe EGGS is not Dead...

To make things worse -and judging from DCI's explanation ( http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/244b2 ) - their problem isn't the card, it's that slow combo-off turn. It's the deck's final blow.
Ergo, I fear that even if we make Eggs viable again somehow, they'll possibly ban something else too, if the new version doesn't win with a faster combo off turn.
