Has anyone played with Dictate of Heliod as a 1-of? I'm trying it in a more controllish build and it's working out alright.

Ah, thanks! Maybe a x2 of the spear? I'm trying to put together a Bitterblossom list and its slowing coming together in my head. Just figured I'd need something besides those two and Zealous Persecution Also, since I'm going to run Bitterblossom, it should be a full 4 or correct? (still fairly new to deck building in general).

If you are going to run BB then yes you should be running 4
I am running 4 IV, 1 spear, and 2 Sorin in my BB build and it is working out pretty well

What are you running to make it "more controllish"?
I'm brand new to both the format and the forum, so I didn't want to get into it too much here, in case it was a faux pas, but I'm splashing blue in for a Token/Polymorph build. I tend to hold onto my Smothers and Paths (as I try to find Zealous Persecution to do away with the x/1s) so it's not terribly rare for me to happily end step the Dictate.

Ha, no problem...is smother working out for you? I was considering switching from Doom Blades to Smother....and Dictate seems like it could be really good in your build

Just from reading everything and knowing how fast some of the decks are in modern it doesn't seem quite like it might be fast enough to beat something like affinity or, at least I'm not sure how as I've yet to build it. How would it compare to the faster decks and how would you deal with them?

I'm still in the early stages of testing, but it's nice to not have to give someone a basic in exchange for Dark Confidant*. I've been liking Smother a lot.
So far Dictate has been a good enough finisher, but I think the deck may be better served by having a way to deal with Cryptic Command.
*EDIT: By which I mean I can avoid using Path on Bob and Smother that mother.
EDIT 2: Smother craps. Bob is basically the only reason to run it over Doom Blade, so it's better in the SB. I've have a number of matchups now where it is simply dead, or at least no better than DB... Slivers, Tron, Affinity, etc.

I'm curious how the blue splash is working for you; one thing I've been thinking about trying is splashing for some snapcasters.
None of the anthem effects hit him, but we run so many spells he can target (discard, removal, token generation) that it seems like there's definite potential.
Has anyone given it a try, or is it just too greedy to dream of the Snapcaster-Spectral Procession value?
Getting decimated by G/R Tron running through the breach... Any ideas how to sideboard?
I really like Nevermore. You can name whatever you are scared of and shut it down. The nice thing is, unlike a lot of other options, it can also stop Karn. The only other options would be Pithing Needle or Phyrexian Revoker. The thing is there are TONS of options but no singular option shuts down everything. The only thing I don't like about Nevermore is its mana cost.
Another really good sideboard card that this deck can abuse is Torpor Orb. Just build your list w/o Squadron Hawk, Auriok Champion, or Tidehollow Sculler and run it main deck. It shuts down sisters, Pod, Twin, and hinders a few other strategies including faeries and goblins. Otherwise you could run Suppression Field MD and that does a lot of work against Tron, Pod, Twin, Merfolk (AEthervial), and can hinder Lili in 8-post. The unfortunate part is the impact it also has on our walkers though we are far less reliant on them than other decks are on their pieces.

The blue splash has been working just fine; Haven't had any mana problems and I'm only running one fetch right now (I run shocklands, fastlands and basics. I've played with the "new" painlands, too; they're not so bad.) My only creatures are Elesh and a SB'd Angel of Jubilation which I'm toying with putting in the main; that's pretty much where the cuts come from. I've trimmed down to one Polymorph (since it's a dead draw if I draw my Elesh) and am running Peer Through Depths, which has been great at digging for tokens, Zealous Persecution, or removal.

Blue is an interesting splash because it gives you access to another anthem as well. Favorable Winds. It works well with Spectral and Lingering. I've seen some versions of these lists also running Squadron Hawks and it works well with that too. You can also run Dispel for Cryptic Command >.< With all of the token generators being Instants and Sorceries you could even in Delver! lol.
Anyway, so has anyone tried Stain the Mind yet? I think if you run it with Raise the Alarm then its castable on Turn 3. That's pretty good. You could swap Tidehollow or something for Raise the Alarm. Not sure what you would switch our for the Stain the Mind. You would need to run at least 3, probably 4, in order to see it early enough to make it worth swapping in the Raise the Alarm to guarantee an early cast.

Cryptics seems super ambitious; more than anything else this deck wants to be able to play spectral procession on turn 3, and supporting WWW for that and UUU for cryptic would be pretty rough on the manabase. If you put in enough blue to support cryptic I think you start talking about a totally different deck (probably much more controlling).
I also don't love favorable winds as an anthem because there's nothing in the deck that favorable winds buffs that honor of the pure wouldn't since all of our fliers are white.
I was thinking about starting with just snapcasters on the splash; the mana's (hopefully) not too bad since it's only 4 cards with single U, and it's already got tons of targets without adding anything (all the hand disruption, spectral procession, raise the alarm, path...). I'm still not 100% settled on what I'd cut, though... Maybe some top-end cards since we want to be playing snap at 4+ mana to get maximum value, but I wouldn't want the deck to go too low on finishers.
Despite getting roflstomped at GP Worcester (0-2-1, Drop), I still find the deck fun anda viable option over my other deck right now (Living End).
Any suggestions for Sideboard stuff against The Rock? Rest in Peace helps against Goyf, Souls and Scooze but that's all I really got. Any suggestions? Surgical Extraction helps a little bit but they have a lot of options.

I've had success with suppression field against Jund, and it gets a lot of the same targets against Rock: fetches, lily, scooze, man-lands, tec edges, equipment if they play it (swords or batterskulls). That said, I don't have a ton of experience with the matchup.

Mirran Crusader and planeswalkers (like Liliana, Elspeth KE or Elspeth T)are good against BG. They will often have a hard time against a swarm of tokens, but watch out for post sideboard Drown in Sorrow
I went 2-0-1 last night taking down the FNM I go to. I was playing a black-heavy sorin build. I played against the mirror (the draw), a mono-red aggro build ported from standard and an infect deck. Beat the others 2-1 in both matches. I will post a bit more later this afternoon.
So I'm looking for a deck to help my girlfriend get started in modern, she's liking the idea of BW Tokens but we don't have the cash to start getting Brimaz and Thoughtsieze. I was considering the event deck and whilst stumbling around online I found this article on Star City Games.
For those of you who don't want to read the whole article here is the recommended alternative (and cheaper) version of the event deck:
I know this deck is missing some good cards but I figured I'd ask the experts (i.e. you guys) what you thought of it as an entry point to the deck? Also are there any other good cheap cards you'd consider?
Also two card choice questions that probably show I don't know enough about the deck:
1) Could you feasibly run Twilight Drover? I'm guessing it is probably just a bit too win more but I figured I'd ask as I've had fun with it elsewhere.
My Decks:
EDH: Sygg, River Cutthroat , Road to Scion
Grimgrin, Corpseborn
Modern: Polytokes
IRL: Progenitus Polymorph , Goblins
Just a friendly reminder that I will drive this car off a bridge
