That's a pretty ignorant thing to say, especially considering he got to day2 GP with the deck. Honestly, we're more of a "look at me I have mainboard bloodmoons and relics (and sometimes simians)" deck than a "Skred" deck.
Honestly, look at the Big Red decks of MRD-SOK standard. 8-12 artifacts to support 4 Shrapnel Blasts. Between Relics, rocks and spellbombs/Simulacrum, it is a feasible alternative to Skred. And there are the "big" versions out there running Simulacrum. So yeah, Shrapnel Blast is there and will likely score us more damage than Skred alone. It kills the things we want killed with Skred and can go to the dome.
Hello all. Fairly new poster here, and when I saw the new Playing on a Budget by GatheringMagic for Skred Red on YouTube, I realized just how fun the deck looks. However, I want to know what the veterans of the deck think of the list. NOTE: Yes, I know this isn't the place to talk budget, but please keep in mind that the series is designed with a $200 budget for Modern. What this means is that if we're talking upgrades, think of this deck as way to get into the deck: a starting point. Please tell me what I need to change to make this deck more FNM competitive, as that's the only environment I see myself playing in for a long time. I also have no experience with the deck. I am actually proxying this up today to play between rounds of a local Modern tournament.
The phoenix are good, but I find pia and Kiran anti synergy with volcanic fallout. Might consider some other cards to replace them.
After some testing last night, I found Pia and Kiran to be absolutely nuts. Being able to turn Relics and Mindstones into shocks is really good for closing out the game.

Maybe I should try it myself. Have not touch my skred red for quite awhile.I must see for myself how good is pia and Kiran. I usually looks at synergy, therefore cards that are anti synergy tends to write off. Need to relook into it.
I do understand that having 3 (or 5 in my case) AoEs is quite a deterrant for running Pia and Kiran for obvious reasons, however I feel that the versatily it offers clearly outweights these cons, especially after one plays this "anti synergy" for a bit you know when to play Kia and when to simply wait to play the AoE. Sometimes you can even put pia and kiran to chunk block + the aoe etc etc.
Plus, cracking usless extra mana rocks in the late game gets absurd, cleaning up the opponent's life total easily. Their honestly all stars and are probably along the lines of auto-includes.

So this list is what I currently have. The plan is to maindeck win via getting 2 or so Demigods in the grave and cast one. If game 1 is rough via too much exile/chump blocks etc we can switch to whichever dragon provides the best effect. Any opinions?

If you're going hardcore on the Demigods, I'd recommend 3 Faithless at minimum. Relics likely also make their way to your sideboard as you don't really want to be eating your own yard.
I think extra dragons in the SB are a mistake, but if you're going to go with them at all, stick to Stormbreath Dragon, who shores up your weakness against Path. There's very few fliers being run that aren't white anyways.

So, I'm a long time lurker and always wanted to play the "biggest" deck in my favorite color (red, ofc), and that's Skred Red (aka mono red control, aka blood dragon, big red, or whatever, Skred Red is the best name). I've been a "red" player for years, usually trying and doing my best with Goblin tribal deck, even winning a PPTQ and finishing 3rd on WMCQ with a modern goblins. Red is cool.
Either way, this past Monday, I had quite a large modern tournament scheduled in Italy (cca 170 players), and I was finally set to try Skred Red (luckily, vendors had those 15 snow covered mountains that I still needed to complete the deck). Since I only had 3 Koths, two stormbreath dragons and three pyrite spellbombs, thats what I used. Here is the decklist.
I used Munchyman81's list, just replaced a few cards that I didn't receive in time with others. I have to say that deck performed very well. This was my first time piloting the deck (I did test a few games with my friends), and it was a nice surprise that I managed to finish in the Top4 (we ended up splitting the top4 prize pool). Here are the matchups I faced:
Round 1: 1-2 vs Ad Naus. I'm a new skred player but this matchup seems like a bad race for us. I lost 1 - 2, and even the victory came because he milled himself by mistake
Round 2: 2-0 vs UR Twin. Not really much he could do. Turn 1 pyrite spellbomb that killed his turn 3 deceiver (with a help from bolt) probably sealed the deal. My opponent said he thought it was a nihil spellbomb (in a SKRED RED DECK!?)
Round 3: 2-0 vs Naya Burn. I know burn is not the best matchup, so winning 2 to 0 was big for my morale after losing in round 1. Anyhow, game 2 I was on 3 life, he had a draw step, but didnt get any gas so he scooped. I consider myself lucky. This is also a match that Thundermaw took away as a 3-turn clock after I played him (opponent was at 15life), so any other threat would give him one more draw step.
Round 4: 2-0 vs Bant Aggro. Both games were decided by blood moon, he didn't have a white source, and I always killed his noble/mana dorks. Game 2 it was all about stormbreath after a resolved blood moon, even if he had white for path, it would do no good.
Round 5: 2-0 vs Naya Zoo. Not much to say, I didn't drop below 16 life in both games. Early spot removal, a sweeper and resolved dragon or koth was all it took for me to seal the round.
Round 6: 2-1 vs Living End. Well, game 1 I made a big misplay, I played turn 1 relic and cracked it turn 2. My opponent had an idea against what he was playing, so he was just sitting on two verdant catacombs. To be fair, I thought it was JUND/JUNK, as he didn't cycle anything before my relic was exiled. I didn't play a turn 3-4 threat since I was afraid of liliana. Well, he was playing Living End - I was greedy and he took game 1 after I didn't draw any more relics. Game two I get him, game 3 I muligan to 6 and kept two relics in starting hand. Yep, I won.
Round 7: 2-0 vs UR Twin. This was a feature match with stream, I did my part of misplaying, like always (still a newb with this deck, spare me please hehe), but still managed to take the game with relative ease. Yes, I should have waited with removing twin targets, but the mistakes didn't keep me from winning. Also, I believe I missed one trigger from Thunderbreak regent, or it was delayed on the life count. Don't really remember too well, I was trying to be focused heh.
Round 8: ID into Top8.
Quarterfinals: I lost game 1, couldn't hit that 4th land drop so my Skred was not trading with his 3/4 goyfs, had to play around two goyf + ooze on board and went for my only outs but didn't get there. Game 2 I was on the play, I believe blood moon + planeswalkers sealed the deal. Game 3 was a real thriller, I was about to die to Treetop Village, but then I went on and had 3 decent topdecks, chandra for his Dark Confidant, Bolt for the treetop, and Koth to steal the game when I was at 4 life. Again, I misplayed in the end, I had koth's emblem on the board and five lands, but instead of just waiting for EOT damage, I went on to cast Thunderbreak Regent. He was at 11 life, I was at 4. He had 3 mana + Raging Ravine, and he even EOT terminated my dragon, so I was in fact dead if he drew an untapped green source. He didn't, and I won. But it was such a big mistake...
Anyhow, we ended up splitting the top4 prizes, and I have to say that I'm loving this deck. Koth is such a beast, and so are all the dragons. They are hard to kill, fast clock threats that many decks can't remove easily (if at all). Bolt does next to nothing to us, and it's the most played card in modern. The most fun was when UR Twin players start to bolt and electrolyze you in the face.. that's when you know they are in a bad spot. Also, there were not many tron decks, so there is that as well
Either way, I'll probably play Skred at the upcoming local and regional tournaments, and will look to report back when something exciting happens. I always wanted to play Skred Red, but only recent success of the deck at GP Pittsburgh (Munchyman81 if I'm not mistaken) made me remember about it and I went on to build the deck. It was a good decision.

How do you play when it's midgame and all your threads are answered so far, with just one draw-engine (Chandra, which can easily be killed by bolt or something)?
I'm always having problems midgame :x
Hey buddy! Well, I really didn't have too many problems with topdeck mode or card disadvantage. I was able to trade 1-for-1 or 2-for-1 on many occasions, and things like Relic and Spellbomb (+ Scrying Sheets) helped me dig when needed, while also hosing x/2 creatures and yard strats. However, I have yet to play a decent amount of games, so you might be right, it could be that I was just lucky in the games.
Chandra was excellent whenever I drew her, and I might think about adding one more. However, it was the dragons and Koth that did the heavy lifting. They are so hard to remove that they usually stick around and do their job, or at least trade.
I thought about Pia and Kiran, but dropped it since it gets wiped by our sweepers. I could still see the value of it, and might try in on the upcoming FNMs. Truth to be told, I don't have much experience with this deck so I would rather listen to you guys
Everyone see the recent Saffron brew? Looks eerily familiar. I remember we had talked a couple of dozen pages ago about the possibility of Ensnaring Bridge. Well here the deck is sans Skred forcing the Blood Moon all-in with a dash of Bridge.
I'm really eager to try it out, I picked up a Magus tonight and plan on scouting out a couple more, and then I just need the suite of Ensnaring Bridges and I can try this out on paper. Although, Scroll Rack and Lantern are actually all the rage in my local meta recently, and ironically, I think they pose one of the bigger threats to the list using a similar line of attack.

Side note. Anyone else a little bummed about all the SCG Pros pushing for a ban on moon? It's the only card in the format keeping decks honest or to adapt. Why try to ban.

Blood Moon isn't a major threat that is holding the format back, so we should be fine. But enough of out of place banlist talk. My testing has been going really well, but I want to know what our combo matchups are like because my local meta is super combo infested.
