Just to throw my two cents out there: if Carrion Feeder were reprinted, I'd play it + Gravecrawler all day every day.
I could see that. I was referring mainly to those that were listed at the top of the page. Which are mostly 4 and 5 drops, that count the number of zombies you have. Things which are not condusive to the current environment.
Im sure some of any old set would see play. But overall we definitely have a better suite to work with than we did back then.

Fair enough. Off the top of my head I can't really think of any other zombies that'd be auto-includes...

redthirst is redthirst, fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. He was the leader of the Fires of Salvation, the only clan I'm aware of to get modded off the forums so hard they made their own forums.
Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.
your telling me zombie master or gempalm polluter wouldn't see play? Once again your missing the point and just looking at certain parts of what i was saying. There is not enough good zombies in modern to make an almost all zombie deck, the only viable zombie deck as of this moment is combing vengevine and dredge to make a solid list containing about 8-16 zombies. Once a zombie deck starts winning dailies, i will admit that i am wrong. But the fact remains having gravecrawler and messengers doesn't make it a solid list, even troll only works with certain decks. There is currently not enough synergy for zombies to be played as a solid tribal deck. Which only means you have to add different creature types/more colors to make the deck viable.
I would play Carrion Feeder (as someone already mentioned), Rotlung Reanimator and Shepherd of Rot too. Especially Shepherd. Fond memories of him against Psychatog decks back in the day. (ohhh, so you run Nightscape Familiar? How nice, one more zombie! :))
Hell, Onslaught zombies were some of the best. Damn Modern, why not the Onslaught block too?
I doubt any of those would see play. Master has the best shot, but it would require a complete retooling of everything since as it stands we WANT things to die. Polluted is more a spell than a creature, so id liken him to nameless inversion. But still too weak.
Ive been playing since long before Onslaught, believe me, i remember all the old decks and all the old comboes. I have many fond memories of my own. But i also remember a format where Festering Goblin was considered an amazing creature and a staple in many decks. And whens the last time youve even seen him considered in modern? Not even mentioning Warchief. Times have changed. The format is different. And as cool as those decks were they wouldnt survive today.
Since relative card value is all subjective i cant really "prove" anything to you. But i guess if i had to try id tell you to bust out your box, sleeve up a variant of Onslaught zombies and run it through your friends playing tron, twin, eggs, jund, and robots. See how you do. Then after that try and just build a modern zombie deck as if OS was in, so that you have modern toys as well. I doubt itll fare much better.
Psychatog, yes. Nightscape* Familiar, yes. But staring down Tarmagoyf and Emrakul, power creep has come too far. Like my sig says, i could be wrong, but i cant imagine anything coming from a deck that ran Soulless one as a power card.
(For the record. I never unsleeved my Onslaught Zombies because ive loved it so much for so long. And it cant even contend with current standard decks let alone modern. But I want my zombies to be strong again even if not top tier, which is why im in this thread in the first place.)

We sure do want things to die... my opponent's goyf, my opponent's bob, my opponent's bloodbraid, my oppon... wait, youn mean we want things on OUR side of the table to die? I don't think so, sir.
Psychatog, yes. Dregscape Familiar, yes.
Wow, that's a nice familiar!
And just answering your comment in general: yes, shepherd would see tons of play. He is nuts in a tribal deck. Z-Master too. Having an army of swampwalking zombies is good, even if not for the regen ability. He could be a surprise "my creatures can't be blocked this turn" spell at least.
actually some of the ones at the top are not necessary for zombie decks. In fact we already have better choices than some of those. The only 3 up there that I REALLY want and would play would be Sheapard of rot, zombie master and Gempalm polluter. Those three are pure zombie gold.
Soulless one- Good body but costs 4. Unbreathing horde does basically the same and is REALLY hard to remove in combat. And it costs 3.
Grave Defiler- Doesn't seem that great to me. there aren't any other cards like it but I don't know that I couldn't just splash draw for an easier effect.
Noxious Ghoul- I like it but its 5 cmc so....yeah. Its not a game ender. It doesn't have protection from anything. So i'm not seeing why I would ever sink 5 mana into this guy in a real modern deck.
But yeah the first 3 are amazing. The last 4 not so much.
I was alittle under the influence and just started naming certain zombies, but sheapard, Master, and Gempalm would be amazing in modern.
So far i've started to make my current list more zombie tribal, only now having bloodghast and vengevine as my only non zombies in the deck, heres how it looks;
SB
-3 Thoughtseize
+3 Slaughter Games (Testing)
So with the changes so far, i have found that its more aggresive and i now have 10 ways to discard creatures. I was considering adding more rotting rats but i am on the fence about them at the moment and i am still deciding whether these changes were correct
Just built this. Sorry if I'm ... jumping on a bandwagon ... or something, but I figured this is the best place to post this.
My wife is learning how to play the game, and I'm building a deck to help her learn as well as "enjoy" ... she said she wants to play Zombies. Seeing how Legacy and Vintage are out of the question, and I personally hate Standard, that left Modern. EDH is also a possibility, but I didn't want her to have to memorize 70 cards as opposed to 15 for Modern. This is designed for her to learn, play, and eventually play at the LGS when they start having Modern FNM in February.
Card choices:
Deathrite Shaman: Versatility.
Dark Confidant: card drawing. Also, nothing in this deck costs more than 3, with the exception of Leyline in the SB.
Gravecrawler, Diregraf Ghoul, Lotleh Troll, Geralf's Messenger, Cemerety Reaper, Death Baron, Lord of the Undead: Zombies.
Nameless Inversion: can be recurred with Lord of the Undead, recurrable removal.
Smallpox: Hand destruction, Land destruction, creature destruction, all in one. Combo with Gravecrawler.
Aether Vial: Creature based deck, rangin from 1-3 cmc. Makes sense.
Mutavault: Zombie.
SB:
Abrupt Decay: removes problematic things.
Maelstrom Pulse: removes problematic things.
Putrefy: removes problematic things.
Leyline of the Void: removes dredge, reanimation, etc.
Looking at the Zombie Vine deck list does anyone have any more budget friendly replacements for Dark Confidant or Thoughtseize? The fetches are going to be pricey but not nearly as hard to come by as those two. Any ideas would be awesome.

There are plenty of Vine lists that don't run either of them. They are dead cards in the yard. I personally wouldn't even consider Bob, the creature base is tight as it is.
Budget seize would be IoK, or possibly Duress.

Vengeful Dead meet diregraf captain. yeah it splashes blue but it also acts as a lord and is 1 cmc lower.
