Uh, ritual? Which ritual are you talking about that he can get out a first turn Phyrexian Crusader? I'm confused.
Anyways, I'm trying out a Wrg deck with Lightning Helix, Ajani Vengeant, Naya Charm, and Eternal Witness and a Wb deck with Dark Confidant, Tidehollow Sculler, and Teysa, Orzhov Scion. Teysa + Squadron Hawks + Mistveils = Fun times.
I´m speaking about dark ritual. My testing group says that modern is meh, so I built a modern deck and I´m playing against their legacy decks to probe that modern has powerful and funny decks as well (so perhaps I could introduce them in modern too ). Becauseof that is something like David vs Goliath but this deck wors really well and is powerful enough to face against theirs. Because of that i would like to develop this deck to play modern tourneys (I´m planning playing it on the next modern tourney i go) but still can play against my friends with their legacy decks.
Guys, I want to experiment with splashing another color. The splash will be very minimal, taking about 4-6 cards from another color. I know that it's probably best not to splash and retain a more consistent mana base, but it's just an experiment I want to try.
Here's the question. If you could splash any one color for just 4-6 cards, which color would you splash for what cards?
Ok, I did it. I splashed black for 4x Phyrexian Arena.
Testing on Cockatrice. I gotta say, having 2x Phyrexian Arena out with Emeria online gives you such a powerful feeling. You're drawing three cards every turn and recurring your Martyr from the graveyard. Lol, I know that it was just a winmore card in that situation, but, still, awesome.
Still haven't made up my mind about it. More testing required.
Hmmm... that's just the way I play this deck. In my mono-white version I play:
21x Plains
4x Emeria
I think 4 is the ideal number for Emeria. The only reason not to include 4 of a particular card is if you want to avoid drawing two copies of it. I'm perfectly happy to draw two copies of Emeria because all my other lands are plains anyway and once I get online, I can recur 2 creatures per turn.
I said it. Mentor is awesome in this deck. all your creatures make you draw and if you play bladehold too you´ll draw 3 cards per turn for only 2 mana. But even without hero you can draw for every hawk, warfare, martyr, ascendant, figure, wayfarer,..... you play. And even better, if you play proclamation and have enough mana you can recover 3 dudes and draw three extra cards.
The deck i´m testing works really well, but have some troubles against phyrexian crusader (only wraths take care of them) and playing against a friend with a black poison deck with this dudes i´m winning only half of the matches.
Affinity is a tough match-up, but it's workable. My friend who plays it doesn't have a sideboard yet, otherwise I think my Stony Silence would of allowed another win or two in my favor.
My other friend who plays Rock has been sick, so no results on that yet. He may proxy Zoo so we can get some testing done in our group.
These are good results so far, but nowhere near complete. I built the deck a few days ago and haven't taken it to any tournaments yet or played online. I will soon, because I need to see how it does against Zoo, Teachings, Splinter Twin, etc.
I was wondering against what matchups does Mana Tithe get boarded in. I've never actually used it, but I assume it's good against Combo decks that tap out to perform shenanigans. Is that all?
It deals with basically every troublesome or bad MU.
Splinter twin: Hide splinter twin in resp to first activation
Affinity: Hide Cranial Plating
Burn: Hide Leyline of Punishment
(Any deck): Hide Relic of Progenitus
Ad Nauseum: Seek Conflagrate/Lightning storm
UW Tron: Seek Mindslaver
UW control: Seek sun titan
Gifts reanimator: Seek Iona
Gx Tron/Intangible Emrakul/ Through the breech/ Any Emrakul deck: Seek Emrakul
Melira Pod: Hide Pod; Seek Redcap or any other piece of the combo (You can win this MU by decking them if they get infinite life. You have mistveil plains. they don't.)
PyroStorm: Hide Pyro; Seek past in flames or anything really. gaining a little life is all it takes, really.
with this deck apparently becoming more and more popular ... anybody thought about the mirror?
those matches must take ages i suppose and you probably need to save your paths for the martyrs, right? so what can one do to get the edge in this matchup?
Sorry but nah, i dont think that's good enough, especially when a good sb card should be versatile against more than one deck. Now that grove/fire is dead, surgical extraction lost a lot. Even cranial extraction would be better to find that one damage dealer in a melira deck.
I think we need to get rid of that martyr or destroy his emerias and prevent him from killing ours.
But actually, I think that settling for draws in the mirror might be ok. Just think about both sides having 40+ life and 4 prisons each online...
Looks like in the mirror keeping a Felidar Sovereign until your upkeep could be important.
I'm loving this deck but we seriously need a new name for it.

I beat him round 1 of that tournament yesterday in the Martyr mirror match. He had 2 cards in his deck and 0 permanents in play but when time was called he had more life. Didn't really know ML was using the sudden death rule but I'm sure if I wanted I could have sac'd 5 martyrs a turn with my 3 emeria double proc for a few turns to win. My mistake for not knowing the rules, but your Martyr deck is nothing special, and has nothing for the mirror match at all. Here's the deck I crushed him easily with. Especially bad-mannered of you since you drew extra cards in the match and couldn't undo the draw, and I let you go on the honor system.
Here's the list - 'Stupid White Men' - I've been running for the last month or so. If you're looking to win the mirror, I'm 12-1 in Modo two-mans. If you're looking to beat control by letting the cat out of the bag (Windbrisk Heights), this build can do that. And if you're looking to reliably race storm to the point where it becomes a decent matchup (because, unlike most Martyr builds, half of our cards aren't blanks against them), then this build can do that too. I feel that these benefits greatly outweigh the very slight detriment of being slightly worse against aggro - to the point where you'll win 4/5 matches instead of 9/10 against Zoo, Affinity, whatever.
So this was my exact 75 for awhile, but in light of the meta changing I think we must adjust. Clearly 4 Canonists in the board is not only right, it's mandatory. Another Relic may also be a good idea. My discontentment with the MD is limited to Ghostly Prison, which is a blank in our bad matchups, so, what do we add that is good in these matchups (Melira, Storm, dedicated control with discard)? Ideally this card would be a two-drop that addresses these issues and is hard to interact with profitably. Some options:
Jotun Grunt
Oblivion Ring
Sun Titan
Grand Abolisher
Knight of the White Orchid
As for the board, maybe I should be running Suppression Field instead of Torpor Orb. Nevermore seems like a very good idea. Thorn of Amethyst is interesting. Angel's Grace is also interesting.
What do you guys think?

Torpor Orb for Melira, Leyline of Sanctity for Storm and I don't even know what for Gifts

Leyline of Sanctity stops Gifts too.
But I think his question was about Teachings, not Gifts. And I don't know the answer to Teachings, if any.

Not hard at all to splash, either.
