While I love Stoutarm, he's slow. VERY slow, and telegraphs his every move. Sacrificing is part of the cost, so opponents can simply respond to the activation by killing Stoutarm, and successfully 2-for-1'ing you.
What are you trying to do with these two defenders? Stop Ensoul Artifact? Then think about adding removal spells. Path to Exile and Condemn are fantastic against Ensoul. Path in response to the cast or Condemn in response to the attack. Either way, it shuts down Ensoul much better than any 4 mana defender would.

It's definitely more of a late game move. This whole deck telegraphs what it does: you reveal your own hand, remember? Let them waste two burn spells or a removal on it: that's Magic. I'll just bring my Ascendant back with Proclamation and try to get Emeria online faster. there is no other 4/4 Lifelink for 4cmc: Abzan Guide shows how powerful Brion Stoutarm is. I was just throwing out ideas: that last tournament was really discouraging. I made play mistakes but those didn't effect the outcomes really: it was bad hands and Ghostly Prison breakouts. Maybe Ajani Vengeant would be better? I'm hoping the mana-fixing is enough to run it this top heavy: I can see myself using Path to Exile on my own creatures more readily.
Playtesting against my EnchanTRON deck with Jester's Cap mainboard finally drove home my need for Aven Mindcensor in the mainboard, which came in handy in my first mirror match last tournament.
Mirror Match> 1-1-0. Mindcensor stopped Squawk draw, Elspeth performed quite well to finish: blew through his Ghostly Prison. Game 2 stopped with me a 56, him a 34: a very pulse-pounding match up. I had a headache the rest of the night.
U Tron> 0-2. Sided in Nevermore for Ulamog and Oblivion Stone: named wrong. Hex Parasite was for Karn but it never came out. People were surprised how long I held out: I had a great draw second game and did have him at 6 or 8 life before Wurmcoil Engine.
I can't post links yet, but I did keep all my matches in a spreadsheet which I'll share as soon as I can. Over the 105 matches I played in dailies and 8 mans I ended up 82-23.
If anyone has any questions about my list let me know!
I'm assuming he went with Aura of Silence because Boggles was out in force, since it's a good matchup versus Delver.
It's a shame that Steffen Van de Veen was matched up against van de Bogaard in the quarterfinals; Martyr Proc is more or less an autowin for the Summoning Trap Valakut deck.

Well, I can saw a woman in two, but you won't wanna look in the box when I'm through.
I've seen your modern daily results on mtggoldfish and they looked extremely promising, so I decided to run your list in the tournament practice room and I have been very pleased with the 75!

Killing Brion does not stop his ability from resolving--Mogg Fanatic kills itself with its own ability, yet it still works as intended. Yup, Fanatic deals damage from the dead!

Against what decks do you board Blind Obedience in against? BO was great tech in Soul Sisters back when I tested it maindeck, both as a source of reach/offence and spot life gain. It was a bit slow and it kept being just short against Sphinx's Rev decks, though, so I started testing other cards in its slot.
I'd love to hear how well BO does in Martyr Proc.

Hi guys, I just started playing with the stack recently, and I play the black white version (i'll post the deck lists in a minute). I saw Blind Obedience in the deck list I was looking at, and I found that is a very good card in the reanimator match up. When they play Through the Breach, or Goyo's Vengeance, their Emrakul / Griselbrand can't attack. So it puts pressure on them to get rid of the enchantment before they can function. The deck lists that I have played against, were all black red and blue, and other than bounce, there's not many ways to deal with the enchantment. It also puts a major strain on Twin decks.
As a sidenote, I think that Athreos is maindeck worthy. There so many times where I can sack a martyr they pay three life and I reanimate anyway. If they don't pay the three life I can use my reanimate for cards like Serra Ascendant... I feel that if you're running the black-and-white version of this deck there's no real reason why you would want to include a different card with the exception of a few match ups. It's great for long grindy type games where you just need to continuously put pressure on your opponent. If you could do that while just gaining life it's all positive. Heck, if you have more than seven permanents on the board now you have a five for beater for 3 in addition.
PS – is there any reason why a lot of ducks are running day of judgment instead of wrath of God? I just played a Deck the other day the ran many troll ascetics and rakshasa deathdealers and it was clutch that they could not regenerate. Most Decks, however, are running two or one day of judgment in the main deck and one in the sideboard. Was not sure the rationale behind that, where for the same cost, you can play wrath of God and be able to stop regenerators. Any insight into this?
I used Blind Obedience mostly in grindy match ups, like G based midrange or control ones, along with the singleton Athreos. Also ain't that bad against twin, because it force them to lay the combo out on our turn since they need to execute it during our end step.
To Demmanic, since I've used your list to win a gpt last weekend: Can I ask you why in your flex slots you picked Wall of Omens over something like Weathered Wayfearer or singleton hate cards like Linvala or Aven Mindcensor? Also what's your thought on Kami of False Hope after you run it out? Is it still worth as a soft lock against Twin or it doesn't increase your win rate so consistently?
Kami is amazing. I might cut the wall for a 2nd Kami. Kami is at its best vs boggles where they eventually exceed 21 damage per turn, however it is basically just the 5th martyr in most other matches.
I run the aven's in the sideboard because they either do nothing or everything and I'm trying to keep the main deck general.
I have never tried linvala, I'm not really sure what she adds to the deck.
To everyone asking about BO. The answer is Twin. Sure have 100000000000 tapped dudes, go for it...
I cut Athreos, decided he was a pet card and only good vs the rock. Also for everyone who hasn't seen it on the mothership or mtgogoldfish, my current decklist is:
Season12 PreGP includes all my matches from the beginning of season 12 (MTGO) untill 1 week after the Modern GP (I'm making a new one once I stop cubing). In this tab you can see the matchup percentages, and whatnot.
Graphs is winrate over time, plus aggro, combo, control, and midrange % over time lines for reference. I only classify a deck as 1 catagory even though many could be two (for example scapeshift and twin I count as combo, while they are "combo-Control" decks.
The current decklist includes the sideboard and it looks like the what comes in portion got cut off when I published it... darn you google drive...
Cuts are what I don't play but have tested and why.
Ignore the data tab, its all the numbers that go into the chart.
Here's my decklist I'm working with currently. I'm still up in the air about a lot of the SB... I was hoping I could get some critiques and advice. I'm brand new to this deck, and I'm still having issues with what to tutor and when. I drop a Ranger, and I get X and Y and should have got X and Z or X and X... If you guys want any rationale on why I play a certain card MD or SB, I'll let you know. I'm just typing this up quick because the Wife and I are trying to get Thanksgiving ready... Please, hit me with criticism!
The deck taps out a lot so anything that stops them from "just winning" is good. The most relevant part of BO is the CMC 2 which is different from Ghostly Prison which has a CMC of 3. This is good for when the twin (or UWR) player has EE or echoing truth. It stops a mass slaughter of your shields. You are never safe if you only have 1 out because they can just Cryptic it. With BO they can't cryptic your GP because you can just recast it while they are not comboing.

I don't like stoney silence because aven is better vs pod and tron, affinity is already a very favorable matchup. I don't like the idea of playing extripate because it doesn't really do anything to effect the board and also isn't white.
Also before you asked about DoJ over wrath. I run DoJ because it is less expensive and out of the over 100 tournament matches I have played with the deck the ability to regenerate has only cost me 1 game (but not the match). Thrun is the only modern playable card that regens, and not many lists run him. Obstinate Baloth is better in the current meta. On paper I actually play wraths.
Some of the things I’ve noticed while playing with this deck on MWS:
Kami of False Hope is great. Faster lock than Martyr. What I mean by this is that you can lock down a turn / few turns earlier than you can with Martyr if you have Proclamation of Rebirth in your hand. You can pay the 5W as soon as you have 6 mana available, and sac every turn to Fog every turn. If you do the same thing with Martyr, you need 6W to effectively reanimate and sack to gain you life. AND if the opponent has a ridiculous board presence out, they might actually have more damage dealing than you have life gaining (especially if you have a low hand count). The original list I was looking at had 1 Student of Warfare in that spot. While Student can become a very good aggressive game winner, too many times it’s used as a chump blocker, levels up (too slowly), and dies to pretty much ALL removal spells. Yes, he’s a 1cc win con, and yes, if he dies, you can reanimate, but I think Kami is a better card at that spot.
I know he’s expensive (all things considered), but Athreos is really good. I’ve yet to play a game where I said to myself ‘Damn, I didn’t want to draw THIS card!’ Now, I know I don’t want him in my opening hand, but any other time, he’s a welcome addition. I love that he’s almost NEVER a creature when I have him in play. I know that seems silly, but I like the fact that his ability is what I’m really wanting… When he’s a creature, he’s susceptible to Path to Exile, Dismember, and other kill spells that scoot around Indestructible. When he’s only an Indestructible Enchantment, it’s a whole lot harder to make go away. He’s SO annoying that I main-decked him. I played one game where all I had was Emeria online, and Athreos in play with lots of white in my hand and a dead Martyr. Upkeep, reanimated and EOT sacked him. Now, my opponent has the choice: pay three life and let me use my Emeria engine to bring him back every turn; or not lose 3 life, I get Martyr in hand, and I use Emeria to reanimate a threat. So he lost the 3 life. I did this so often that he fell to 2 life (only by paying 3/turn from Athreos), and COULDN’T pay the life anymore. So many creatures die and come back with this deck, and either you get a free reanimate, or you deal 3. I personally like looking at Martyr as “1W Sorcery – Opponent loses 3 life and you gain X life, where X is 3 times the White cards in hand.”
My sideboard is all over the place. Other than combo wins (Twin, Pod…), the deck looks like it doesn’t need much in the board… I like Blind Obedience for Twin, in addition to the Ghostly Prisons to control that part of their deck. The rest, I’m up in the air about. I see Leyline in lots of SBs, but I can’t see it being good except against Pod where they infinite loop Murderous Redcap. Even if you get Leyline out, they can still gain infinite life off Kitchen Finks to still win the game… The reason I’m asking about this is because Leyline is do darn expensive… Is it worth getting 2? And is that the appropriate number to run? If it IS necessary, what other matchups is it good against?
As for Extirpate, I just like the idea. I saw Cranial Extraction in Mono-White Martyr decks, and since I’m running black, I like ‘split second’ more than the ‘free’ part of Extraction. I honestly wanted it in the board because A) didn’t know what else to put in, and B) thought it might be good against some decks that run 1 or 2 key cards that I can wipe. Again, they were wild card spots and thought they might help.
I know a lot of people run Aven Mindcensor and that it’s good. It’s just so darn expensive. Is this a card that should be an auto include in the MD/SB? If so, what are the key matchups it’s good in, and how many in the MD/SB? What’s a good number to shoot for?

From void evolved Phyrexia. Great Yawgmoth, Father of Machines, saw its perfection. Thus The Grand Evolution began. — Phyrexian Scriptures
I agree with you on kami, however I disagree with you on Athreos. I do love his effect, but it just doesn't do much of anything in most matchups. Athreos's ability is at its best when you are putting a clock on them and want recursive threats. This deck is the exact opposite of a fast clock most of the time. The main principle of this deck is "survive till I can't die" and athreos doesn't help you survive, nor does he stop you from dying unless they are also almost dead.
Delver: Does almost nothing vs Delver
Burn: Does almost nothing vs Burn
Boggles: Does less than nothing vs Boggles because they have lifelink enchantments
Scapeshift: The optimal play pattern vs scapeshift is to get above 36 life and stay there. He doesn't aid in that plan
UWR: They have paths which limit his ability to recur your non martyr threats, he could be relevant lategame here, but doesn't stop them from killing you
Twin: vs infinite combo we don't have time to durdle
Pod: vs infinite Combo we don't have time to durdle
Tron: Helps with O Stone, dies to karn and if they have wurm coil he does nothing
The Rock: Scooze is there only out. They can't beat him
Aven Mindcensor is Key vs pod and Tron. It shuts down birthing pod and chord of calling, as well as map and sylvan scrying out of tron. Sometimes its a little slow vs tron, but you need all the help you can get in that matchup. I also will bring in aven vs scapeshift. It soaks up a burn spell most of the time, but if they don't kill it they can't combo. There are enough main deck dead slots where its fine to bring it in. I also bring it in vs Ranger or eos and squadron hawk decks.
As far as the extirpate hitting key cards: How do you plan to get the key cards into the graveyard?
On Leyline: Leyline is not good in the current metagame (MTGO). I don't know exactly how good it is on paper. It stops redcap (which people have dropped for the angel combo), valakut (which is already a great matchup), and storm (not in the metagame).
Yesterday I was send a message from a person on mtgo asking to discuss some cards in the deck. After conversing a little the person claimed to Besteffen Van De Veen (the person who top 8'd GP Madrid with the deck). I cannot verify if that was actually the case but if it was that is pretty cool. After our discussion we both agreed to try out some of each others card choices. With that in mind I took a break from cubing and did a daily today. I also decided to do a write up.
I do not recommend moving the guildmage to the sideboard, I just didn't have time to figure out a cut and she shines the strongest after they have graveyard hate so she got the move temporarily.
Round 1- WBR Control- 4 Relic, Sorin, lingering souls, lots of removal, mardu charm, Ajani Vengant
Game 1: I won the die roll and started out with a tapped land and passed. My opponent goes turn 1 relic. I play a turn 2 martyr and then we pass back and forth till they cast sorin on turn 4. I sac martyr, and charm it back into play going to 40 life. We went back and forth a lot, but he cast 3 relics and won on turn 20.
Sided out: 1 wrath, 1 Kami, 1 Wayfarer, 1 Proclamation, 1 Linvala
Sided in: 2 Castigate, 1 Austere Command, 1 Disenchant, 1 Guildmage
Game 2: I got the engine online and won a long game.
Game 3: My opponent mulliganed to 6, cast a bunch of removal, I got proc online with over 30 life bringing back serra's every turn until they scooped to emeria+7plains and proc in hand while low on life.
Rounds 2- Mindslaver Tron
Game 1: I lost the die roll and then got demolished by a turn 3 tron + mindslaver
Sided out: 1 kami, 2 wrath, 4 Ghostly Prison, 3 path to exile, 2 Proc
Sided in: 3 Aven Mindcensor, 4 BO, 1 Command, 2 Castigate, 1 Disenchant, 1 Guildmage
Game 2: Very close, lost on turn 15 to a sundering titan and 2 wurm tokens during a partial mindslaver lock (BO makes it every other turn)after getting him to 2 life
Round 3- Regular Tron
Game 1: This game was insane. I started out winning the die roll and leading off with a turn 2 martyr, into turn 3 sac play 2 serra. My opponent dropped an O stone, I swung him down to 7, and played ranger searching up 2 more serra. My opponent blew up my stuff, I cast my next 2 serra. My opponent cast a second O stone, blew my stuff up. I cast proc, he cast o stone, I cast proc, he cast emrakul. I had enough permanents in play where if he swung he would lose (I was at 45 life exactly). He top decked a eye of ugin using his extra turn got a sundering titan with it, blew up 2 of my lands, which forced me to sac down to 1 serra, and I hit him to 1 life before losing. My opponent said "I've never seen such a good soul sisters draw" I told him that it was because this deck isn't soul sisters (huge pet peeve of mine when people call "Martyr Proc" "Soul Sisters").
Sided out: 4 Prisons, 1 Kami, 1 Linvala, 3 path to exile, 2 Day of judgement
Sided in: 3 Aven, 2 castigate, 1 guildmage, 3 BO, 1 Command, 1 disenchant
Game 2: not very interesting because he kept a 1 lander. I burned him out on turn 4 with guild mage.
Game 3: I locked my opponent out using ghost quarter, wayfarer, and mistveil plains, disenchanted his o stone.
Round 4- Faeries
Game 1: I lost the die roll. My opponent did some stuff, I went off with Proc and Martyr. My opponent got sassy with me about how I was playing a durdle fest before scooping because he/she was dying to their own bitter blossom.
Sided Out: 1 Linvala, 1 proclamation of rebirth, 1 serra ascendant
Sided in: 1 Wrath, 1 Command, 1 disenchant
Game 2: Similar to game 1 but I had to win through a relic. After I dealt with the Relic I started recurring serras till my opponent eventually scooped while at 5 life with 20 seconds left on the clock. I was in the 60-80 range with 15-20minutes left on the clock.
I feel like these matchups were not very typical for the modern metagame, and despite facing my worst matchup twice managed to get a reasonable 3-1 finish. I am surprised I beat RG tron and lost to U tron. U tron is a better matchup than RG tron (they are both bad matchups, but U is easier for me to interact with).
I cut Linvala every match this tournament so I cannot say if she is good or not. Versus what basically amounted to 4 control decks she didn't really do much. Game 3 vs RG tron convinced me that Wayfarer is worth consideration

It's a shame that Steffen Van de Veen was matched up against van de Bogaard in the quarterfinals; Martyr Proc is more or less an autowin for the Summoning Trap Valakut deck.

Was not sure the rationale behind that, where for the same cost, you can play wrath of God and be able to stop regenerators. Any insight into this?
Kami is amazing. I might cut the wall for a 2nd Kami. Kami is at its best vs boggles where they eventually exceed 21 damage per turn, however it is basically just the 5th martyr in most other matches.
I run the aven's in the sideboard because they either do nothing or everything and I'm trying to keep the main deck general.
I have never tried linvala, I'm not really sure what she adds to the deck.
To everyone asking about BO. The answer is Twin. Sure have 100000000000 tapped dudes, go for it...

Here is a rundown of all the tabs:
Hope it helps!

They can't beat him
As far as the extirpate hitting key cards: How do you plan to get the key cards into the graveyard?
On Leyline: Leyline is not good in the current metagame (MTGO). I don't know exactly how good it is on paper. It stops redcap (which people have dropped for the angel combo), valakut (which is already a great matchup), and storm (not in the metagame).

3 Aven Mindcensor

1 Day of Judgment
2 Patrician's Scorn
1 Austere Command
2 Castigate
1 Vizkopa Guildmage
Game 2: Very close, lost on turn 15 to a sundering titan and 2 wurm tokens during a partial mindslaver lock (BO makes it every other turn)after getting him to 2 life
Game 1: This game was insane.
I cut Linvala every match this tournament so I cannot say if she is good or not. Versus what basically amounted to 4 control decks she didn't really do much. Game 3 vs RG tron convinced me that Wayfarer is worth consideration
