Hopefully, we get a 3 cmc enchantment tutor. To help bring down the price of Idyllic tutor - it's almost 30 dollars, but no competitive modern deck seems to be using it.

You aren't likely to see legacy powerhouses reprinted, including things like Force of Will, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Lion's Eye Diamond, Daze, Brainstorm, Wasteland, Entomb, and Hymn to Tourach, etc., because then there is no point to legacy. You also aren't likely to see any really powerful fast mana, such as Dark/Cabal Ritual or Ancient Tomb or Exploration. Further, you aren't likely to see non-interactive cards get reprinted, things like True Name Nemesis or Back to Basics or Leovold. Further, you aren't going to see any cards with Conspiracy mechanics on them, such as Will of the Council or Palace Jailer. You are also unlikely to see any particularly powerful humans, such as Sanctum Prelate. You should also not expect to see cards that have archaic mechanics on them, such as threshold, or shroud.

What you should expect is cards from bygone archetypes that don't have a home in Legacy, such as Astral Slide, Riptide Laboratory, Goblin Ringleader, Slivers, Madness cards, Psychatog, along with some more niche but powerful spells like cycling lands, Force Spike, Wirewood Symbiote, Sulfuric Vortex, Vindicate, Innocent Blood, and Impulse. Things that are strong, but not strong enough for legacy and mostly forgotten. Worse case scenario is that they take some good spells and put them on sticks.

You also have to remember that the set is built to be drafted, and as such will contain a good amount of chaff.

The people who are spouting about Force of Will are crazy and the people who think True Name Nemesis is an okay card are absolutely off their rocker.

You worded this very well. I was trying to get all these points across too but you did a better job.

Until we have spoilers that prove this philosophy wrong I believe this is the lense we should look through for all modern horizons discussions.

I agree with every card you named being likely or unlikely except for two. Daze and hymn I agree are powerful legacy staples but I think these have a chance of being in this set. These may be the kind of powerful spells that WotC believes are on the modern power level but would be too much for standard, like counterspell. I'm not saying these two are ok, I'm saying this is close to where I see line between acceptable or not.

The faithless looting family of decks still really strong.

CFB is deciding to show Pauper for the past 2 or 3 hours, instead of Modern, even though two rounds have already been played today. I got timed out in chat for asking when Modern was coming up, and why aren't we seeing it now.

I was there yesterday (scrubbed out of the main event, with every round but one being an extremely close game 3, and two of them going to turns), and headed back home last night. Was hoping to actually be able to watch Day2...

But I still feel like a winner, as I accomplished my goal for the weekend: (attached)

Edit: good gracious, we finally get to Modern and all they're doing is already speculating about banning faithless looting. So I guess I can look forward to another one of my decks being banned. LOL

Its why Horizon's needs to shake things up. There is next to zero reason to not play a looting deck.

And still not enough gravehate in decks. It is unbelievable

Pssshhh. People are so small-minded, I swear. Guess it's time to pull Skred Red back out and dumpster the meta, because it has literally all positive matchups against that list of decks (with the exception of B/G Rock).

Paper players are always slow to come to terms.

They should be running main GY and sideboard hate.

I've got Surgical main again, and Anger in the side.

The fact the format has gotten to the point where you have to play main deck GY hate says enough about modern as a format right now. Both these decks have been everywhere online for a while now as well so these two decks being the clear best decks in the room should be no surprise going into this tournament. I mean the last modern MTGO PTQ has 4 dredge decks in the top 8

Maybe an analysis of Day 2 conversion rates would be better than this silly approach of, "ThE nUmBeRs ArE rEaLlY hIgH!" If there were 2,000 Dredge decks and 200 G/B Rock decks, the numbers become a bit hazier on the "best decks," or how degenerate GY strategies are.

I feel we have seen enough from the last 4 it 5 months to know where we are at with things.

If you cut back on yard hate I don't even know what you are hedging against.

Dredge, Phoenix, Hollow One all must be respected. I mean Dredge alone....let alone Dredge and Phoenix.

It's unsurprising that Izzet Phoenix is a top deck or that it sees so much play. It's the kind of low-floor, high-ceiling cantrip-heavy deck that lots of spikes favor. It's proactive enough to succeed and get free wins but has enough reactive elements that better players can leverage decision-making for small edges. It's also fairly resilient to GY hate if that hate doesn't have a clock behind it; Thing doesn't care about GY hate, Drake is still massive, and Phoenix is still a 3/2 haster in a pinch. It's just a very good deck with lots of consistency and flexibility.

Day 2 numbers are relatively meaningless without Day 1 numbers. Top 32 numbers, however, are very meaningful when compared alongside Day 2 numbers. Hopefully we'll get those soon and get a better snapshot of Modern at this event.

I'll also remind everyone that GP Toronto, literally less than a month ago, had an overall healthy outcome. Decrying any element of Modern health based on this one GP without contrasting it with GP Toronto is a disingenuous approach. This is doubly true when we don't even have the GP LA T8/T32. Even if that GP LA picture isn't great, it needs to be considered alongside recent results, not instead of those other results. My biggest concern would be lots of Izzet Phoenix decks, both because the deck is strong, and because better players may gravitate towards it.

PS. Unban SFM.

i think UW miracles playing RiP main is still close, even in this environment. foregoing snaps, even without the full set, makes your cheap spells a bit worse and your top end a little less high (snaps + cryptic). then you consider that UR phoenix has draws that play through it, and its questionable to register them maindeck at a GP. i think having 3-4 in the 75 is completely reasonable alongside 1-2 surgicals in this kind of field though.

i wouldnt be against 1-2 relics main, which we saw fabiano employ at an SCG event not too long ago. those still leave your snaps somewhat live, and the instant speed draw is applicable.

I see a lot of posts on the "people are not getting it" line and I am not sure if it's true. Now, I am not saying it is UNtrue, but rather, we would need some data for it.
For example the Faeries master went X-3 yet again missing on another top 8 by a match, and he was packing 6 pieces of GY hate in the SB. How much more than that does one need to go and where is the line that says that GY strategies are a bit too wrapping?

Again, I am not claiming that that's the case, but if we see control decks packing main-deck GY hate, decks with 6+ GY hate SB cards, doesn't it become all too much? What's the silver line here on GY hate vs meta wrapping? What are the data that prove that people are just unprepared?

I don't even particularly care about the top 8 unless it's wildly divergent from the day 2.
