SCG (Team) Day 2 had UW and UWR Anthe top 2 decks for Modern. UW looking pretty good.
It's always super popular at team events. Unsure why.
It was popular at the last few GP too, plus MTGO events. It's just popular across the board. In the Reddit GP sample, UW Control had the 3rd highest MWP of all decks with an N of 472. It's a good archetype, it's a popular archetype, and its SCG Team Event prevalence is just an indicator of that success.
the mtgo challenge results are up as well. humans and hollow one showing up in numbers which isnt surprising. my guess is that UWx spirits (vial or company) is the flavor of the month deck as people explore and refine it. from my perspective its slightly worse than humans overall, but better than humans against decks loaded with creature interaction.
im digging the 9th place UR wizards deck. i didnt find the cantrip heavy version appealing. hope it has legs to become a legitimately good tempo deck, which are sorely lacking in modern atm.
Yea it looks like Militia Bugler has revived interest in Humans. Hoogland's been tuning that UR tempo deck for a while now. My assumption is it's not quite strong enough to be a consistent contender but time will tell.
Looks like the general trend is that modern is in a state of flux with decks rising and falling with each event and even small additions like the new Ajani, Sarkahn, SPirit Lord, or militia guy making small but impactful changes.
Delver of secrets with 19 instants seems so unbelievably bad.
Delver has always been somewhere between "ok" and "bad" with our suite of cantrips and counterspells. After banning Probe, it's going to take some kind of massive revolution or overhaul to make it anything other than T3 jank. Might get lucky once in a while, but the days of "top of tier 2, sneaking in and out of tier 1" are long gone. My foil ISD Delver have been sad for a while.
The problem with those tempo decks is that they are just outclassed by nearly every other kind of deck. They don't have the speed or reliability of Burn and Affinity, they don't have the high impact value cards of Jund, they don't have any kind of late game inevitably like Jeskai or Tron. It's a suboptimal deck that trades being fantastic at any one thing for being OK at a handful of things. It used to be good enough when you could flip Delver, get Prowess triggers, and make tokens for free, while seeing if the coast was clear (or how to sequence your fairly mediocre spells). But the deck was already far from amazing WITH Probe, but not even the Wizard cards are enough to change my mind on it with Probe gone. Honestly, the best "tempo" deck right now isn't even really tempo (Mardu Pyromancer).
There's a hero who has 5-0ed a number of leagues recently on RUG Delver. Faithless Looting and Hooting Mandrills play well. I'm on a similar deck and I've got no illusions of it being tier 1 or anything, but I think it's tuneable for a particular metagame, and with Faithless Looting and Serum Visions, gives you some amount of control over your draws, which has always been the downside of Delver in Modern.

Can you throw me a link, Mike? I've got Hollow One, Monument Sisters, and Knightfall right now, but I like to keep my colors and archetypes fairly balanced, and that sounds like it's just what I'm looking for.

I keep forgetting that's a thing. But I don't own green cards (aka lands and goyfs) so alas, I won't be trying it out myself. A shame, because the Grixis builds were among my favorite things after Twin was banned and before Probe was banned. Still Breaching them Emmys these days. No more fair play for me!

Jeff Hoogland currently 7-0 (no byes) with his UR Wizards deck, defeating Jim Davis (Humans and NOT UWx like he always plays) on camera at the SCG event. That was amazing and I take back all the bad things I said about his build. I may even have to put it together myself....
Jeff's been playing that deck a ton on his streams, it's a lot of fun. How great would it be if this deck was real and we had a legit UR tempo deck in Modern?

Yeah, you're probably right. It's one of those decks that'll make me check out every wizard they print in future sets for sure, lol. And how much of a travesty is it that Young Pyromancer isn't a wizard?
BTW George, long time no see, lol. I went to my LGS to play Modern for the first time in a year today, took Friedmann's GDS list, EZ 4-0, lol. Deck is still really good. Faithless Looting is nuts in the deck.

Yeah, luckily there's not a lot of Mardu or UW at my LGS. I played against Burn, where the pilot misplayed the matchup and chipped away at my health instead of holding his spells to kill me all at once, Green Devotion, Ad Naus, and Dredge, but the Dredge player's deck bricked in games 2 and 3, and I killed him before he could get the engine online. Had a lot of fun, though, and it was interesting to see how the deck has evolved since I was playing more like a year ago. 4 Anglers and 0 Tasigurs makes total sense to me. I think I can count on one hand the number of times I ever activated Tasigur in the deck. Faithless Looting is basically Thoughtscour 5 and 6 for the purpose of turboing out Anglers, and Baubles instead of SV also increase your chances of a turn 2 fish. I don't know if 0 SV is right, it feels like it should be wrong, but maybe it's not. I know a lot of good pros say that SV is just a bad card that we all think is good because it's the best blue cantrip. All-in-all, Friedmann's more turbo approach to the deck feels right to me. That's kind of where I had been leaning back when I was playing more, I always thought TBR should be in the main deck, and there should be more Anglers than Tasigurs.

I'm not sure what the meta response is, but I'm glad people have finally caught on in Paper.
