its funny because if you look at the legacy miracles deck pre-banning, which i think is safe to say is the most dominant control deck in the history of the game,
Psychatog.
Or ThopterDepths, if you count it as control.
I think Psychatog had a ton of dominance, but it was definitely usurped after Billy Moreno's deck was discovered in PT Los Angeles in 2005. Although Antoine Won the PT, the following PTQ Season was dominated by one of the first successful Sultai Decks I can recall. Event coverage of that PT is here; https://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/ptla05
I think it's a more accurate statement to say that Miracles has been the most dominant control deck in any era for a period of time respective to formats.
I thought Humans was a flash in the pan, but Image really changed that deck! The fact that the mana base is so smooth is insane.
I guess Humans is really here to stay, I can't see this deck being worse than tier 2. The fact humans is an ever-green tribe and doesn't suffer from the same issue as rarity like merfolk and something like slivers is huge.
yeah the combination of thalia, freebooter, and meddling mage gives the humans deck a serious amount of game against decks that other aggro decks have trouble with. definitely a shoe in for tier 1 status, possibly usurping affinity as the best aggro deck in the format.
affinity is stupidly resilient though, and has access to spells in all colors as well.

I don't like the principle of the deck (and the way the human type suddenly made it the most powerful tribe ever), but I may only say that because I don' own 4 aether vial.

Does anyone know if that Bring to Light/Scapeshift deck from GP Phoenix has any legs? On paper it looks kinda clunky, but top 8 at a GP isn't nothing. Most Scapeshift decks I've faced weren't anything to write home about, so I'm curious if this build might shake it up.
well it was only a matter of time until RUG scapeshift decks started showing up (this includes BTL versions). they can leverage cryptic command and jace better than most because of their ramp. jace also helps dig for the combo.
it seems like a deck well positioned when the format slows down because it just mows through midrange and control decks. both sides are sorta doing the same thing, but the valakut player has overwhelming inevitability.
i cant imagine it having a good humans matchup at all. it seems way too easy to draw a mixture of combo and fair elements, which aggro decks can punish pretty hard.

I don't think BTL scapeshift performs well enough against opposing combo or aggro decks enough to be a good long term deck. It's very hard to beat storm or ad naus.
It's not particularly relevant but I will say the worst thing in the world is playing against Mill with scapeshift. That actually was what put me off the deck as there were *two* mill players at my LGS at the time.
I like where it's going with Azcanta and Jace; those're really solid additions. But I don't know that it's got staying power due to those things not really fixing the aggro matchups.
I think the BtL version can be tuned if combo takes up more of the field. The top 8 list was white splash, but you could easily add black to include more disruption. I also think jace fits best in a combo control shell. I've been playing it in jeskai breach, and a 4 mana brainstorm that almost always eats an attack is often good enough when you win the following turn. I think jace has legs in control shells, but I think he shines best when there's a combo to dig for.

BtL Scapeshift is one of those Tier 2 Modern decks that is totally viable but probably not optimal. Incidentally, there are literally dozens of those kinds of decks in Modern. Because it's almost impossible to play the matchup game in Modern due to the sheer format diversity, it's often better to just play whatever deck you know the best that most allows you to leverage play skill and experience. If that's BtL Scapeshift for you, that makes it a good choice. If BtL Scapeshift is a fun deck for you that will encourage you to practice it, that also makes it a good choice.
I'd guess that along with the RUG variant probably getting a decent upgrade from Jace, Scapeshift generally will probably get a big boost from Damping Sphere when Dominaria drops. The tax doesn't hurt it much, and AFAIK it basically functions as a 1-sided, 2-CMC Blood Moon vs. Tron, shuts down Storm, and slows down a number of other decks by a couple of turns.

Granted that this is a team event and should be treated cautiously the metagame looks quite interesting. Only 1 version of control can be found, but quite successful (7x UW Control decks at 7,61%). Besides that we have a healthy mix of combos decks, several aggro decks with good representation (affinity, burn, humans), two different decks are the main midrange players (GDS and Jund), and of course Tron and Titanshift.

Same disclaimers apply here as you made for the Kyoto dataset, but only to an extent. When MTGO Challenges, SCG Opens, Team events, Team GP, and individual GP all look healthy in a similar way, there's a pretty good chance the format as a whole is healthy too. Notably, the JTMS fearmongering is yet again debunked. Neither JTMS nor BBE are warping the format in any way, a further strike against those doomsayers who foretold the end of Modern. In fact, the metagame looks extremely similar to the PT and pre-unban metagame with only a few differences, the biggest of which is Jund replacing a few midrange options. But even that is overblown, as we still see other midrange decks making appearances, even if Jund has taken some of their share. Even so, we also see BBE improving a few non-Jund decks like Ponza and RG Eldrazi, so it's either a net diversity gain or at least no changes.
Overall, we continue to see Modern doing well and the Modern diversity vision being fulfilled.

It is impossible to draw conclusions about any individual deck, as only 2 of 3 team members need to win.
I agree that there is a healthy mix of decks, but the "placement" of any individual deck is entirely meaningless in this context.

Hence I did put the disclaimer in my post (which seems like you ignored). HOWEVER, as Ktk pointed out, these results (which I say once again should be taken cautiously) do ALIGN with the context of modern we have seen from the last GPs, Modern Opens, and MTGO Challenges. This is a reason to give some credit to this data, as there doesn't seem to be anything out of the norm.
The healthy mix of decks we saw in these two team events is the same more or less healthy mix we see everywhere currently, something that has to be acknowledge, even by people who hate modern because, well, it is a fact.

I agree with that assessment, but at least 1 more week has passed without Bloodbraid Elf or Jace, the Mind Sculptor "breaking" the format - as ktkenshinx alluded to above. I like seeing that. I can throw SO much in the face of those who said that it would be re-banned, especially locally. I even had 2 friends this past FNM say that the "best" Jace shell hasn't been found yet (which is at least debatable) and that it still will get re-banned. Lol. Still, I think whenever I win store credit, I'm using them nearly exclusively to buy Mystics. Ancestral Vision going from $6 to around $8-11 is what kept me from buying more than 4 extra play sets, despite an MTGS member telling me to buy 100s more. I regretted that decision quite a bit, so considering Mystic will probably briefly be around $60 if unbanned, $20 seems like a fair price to pay.
