Fatal Push is an excellent step in the right direction. It's a generic answer! It's a one-drop! It fills a slot black didn't have! I'm extremely happy Wizards printed this and hope it signals a new direction for answers.
I agree it's a great card for the format, but i'm unsure GBx needed another strong generic answer for small creature decks is the specific answer the format needed. that said it may be personal bias in that (I play Death & Taxes variants in modern). Whether this helps more pure control decks like grixis or helps spawn new decks (Esper control? maybe help Mardu Midrange) is the question to me.
Disagree that this isn't the kind of police spell Modern needs. The format's biggest problems surround fast, linear, creature-based strategies. This directly slows all of them while retaining relevance in the late game. By contrast, Disfigure only worked against very low to the ground decks and, even there, it was far too limited.
Just need the revolt counterspell to a) exist and b) be playable and Modern will look much better. Even if that doesn't materialize, this is still a fantastic addition that will definitely slow the format. Well done, Wizards!
I do agree this type of answer is what modern needed, It just saddens me it's another amazing card printed recently that may help power up Jund/Junk even more. Like i said I'm probably biased as this will kill any creature in modern i'd like to play but that happens. Good on wizards for potentially starting to print more strong generic answers in standard.
It gives me hope for a revolt counterspell, akin to Prohibit, which would be phenomenal.
They already spoiled Disallow, and I doubt Standard will see a better counterspell than that. At least we'll know by the end of the week, right? A Prohibit-like card would fit the Revolt mechanic...

Well, without fetchlands a spell like:
UU (or 1U, or RU, or WU) Counter target spell CMC2 or less, Revolt CMC 4 or less
Would not be particularly strong in the current standard. Doubt it would see much play to be honest. Maybe a 1-2 of to hate on smuggalo copters?
Fatal Push was clearly printed because Standard sucks so bad now, and they want instant speed removal for Smuggler's Copter. because it's a creature that has hexproof in the opponent's turn essentially.
But! In Modern it will be even better. It's a kind of Abrupt Decay policing card. Sultai, Esper and Abzan Midrange, Grixis Control are the clear winners, because black did not have such a tool. Grixis Delver and Jund can and will play it a lot. I dare to say the next banlist announcement will be NO CHANGES(except even Dredge now). This is a step in the right direction.
Wizards well done, but I am sad that Smuggler's Copter warping the format so bad was the reason that pushed them to do this. We will take this anyways and improve our beloved format!
Aether Revolt was probably already finished printing and waiting for distribution by the time Smugglers Copter was first released into standard. Wizards plans years in advance and can't make snap prints or changes. They didn't expect copter to be doing *that* well. This card was planned from the start and wasn't done in response to Standard.
I'm excited to see how the format reacts to a new removal spell, especially one that hits current top decks. It could bolster a lot of fringe color combinations/archetypes.

They probably think Ceremonious Rejection is more than enough to deal with all the artifacts, and Disallow is a great general counter. As much as I would love to see a counter like that printed (because it would help Modern), I'm not optimistic that it would happen.

Absolutely... black has needed a good 1CC removal spell for ages, and I think this fits the bill. Instant speed, similar power to lightning bolt, and the revolt ability is relevant. Playable alongside path, bolt, and other removal. And even more important, at uncommon!

This is SO GOOD that I'm practically giggling like a little school girl. Innocent B-what?
This is the exact kind of printing that makes sense for both Standard and non-rotating formats. Standard has its haymaker, battle-cruiser Magic where 2CMC is really no big deal, and even 4CMC doesn't matter quite as much. But it's so powerful in older formats. I really hope they explore this kind of direction more.
This would seam to be the type of card BX control decks were missing to get to the next level in modern. Where jund has had terminate and abrupt decay and junk path to exile, pure control decks with (non grixis) lacked answers like bolt to get to the next level where path to exiles land ramp becomes negligible.....? +1 from me
Always remember that new "goodstuff" cards are much more likely to power up the Strongest shells they currently fit into than shells that basically don't exist in the format, this card absolutely helps bgx and grixis more than anything else.
That being said, i seriously wonder if BUG can be a real player in the format with this card
How could I forget that but esper seams much stronger than grixis at the top end and has just lacked getting to the next level of the game at a healthy life total. They already had lightning bolt while we were stuck with disfigure which was outclassed to quickly in modern. This card gives more incentive to play 3-4 snapcaster mages since our targets have now increased?
really revolt just needs to be an evergreen mechanic. it is the perfect Avenue to print modern cards through standard as long as they maintain the "have to go through standard" stance. as a mechanic it is close to "this card does something extra in modern anday legacy."
Because Terminate is still a catch all for ONE extra mana in something like Jund
Jund players will feel real stupid seeing something like Tasigur, Gurmag, and other cards and know they don't have a single card to deal with it minus LOTV.
Bolt is still a thing, I don't think I'd cut all my catch-all's for 1 mana. Push is amazing, but I absolutely don't think it's going to just replace terminate
This is going to slot into Junk, I guess sultai and Grixis.
I don't think it'll replace anything entirely, but in Jund I'm definitely going to start by adding 2 of these and shaving 1 here 1 there of other stuff, potentially even including Inquisition.
But Jund isn't what this card helps the most. Jund already has Inquisition, Bolt, and Decay for CMC 1-3 creatures and Terminate for CMC 4+. I think this best helps decks that aren't able to pack in all 3 of Inquisition, Bolt, and Decay, all of which overlap tremendously.
I feel the Infect and UR Prowess and Zooicide will be byes for all kind of black control decks. @Bfrie Infect will easily be 80/20 matchup no and the rest of those will be a lot more better than before. No Mutagenic Growth to trigger prowess acting as a Mental Misstep nonsense anymore!
Agreed. My local meta has shifted towards midrange decks and aggro. Delver, Burn, Infect, Affinity, Zoo, UR Prowess, im going to throw some in Jund when they release, will test MD and probably end up with a split in SB. I havent played Jund locally in months as there are lots of other BGx decks and i have been running UR Breach. Im excited to sleeve my Goyfs again. But maybe this makes Jund go back to rocking Tasigur as a way to deal with other Fatal Push decks. Its going to feel bad seeing everyone running this if my deck relies on creatures, will be interesting to see how this shapes the metagame or maybe promote decks to run fewer threats that can get Push'ed.

This is not going to replace terminate, you are absolutely wrong
It won't replace it but in a meta as fast as we have it now I can definetely see a split between Terminate and Push. Costing one mana less is super relevant (even more so in Grixis where you can recast Push with Snap on turn 3) and with a fetch to trigger Revolt, Push still deals with most of the stuff in the format. Tasigur doesn't see that much play, Bant Eldrazi is held down by dredge and when you face a Wurmcoil Engine Terminate usually doesn't win you the game either.
My thoughts exactly, perfect timing for them to PUSH this card to help demote these linear creature combo decks without a rash unbanning(SFM) or banning(BI)....Side note: do you think a stoneforge unban is as unlikely with this card available now?! Or preordain ?
For decks that need to spend their first few turns stabilizing, Push is absolutely worth running. Grixis would love to have a few extra Bolts to hold off Swiftspear/Guide/Delver/Glistener/Kiln.
I'm guessing with how strong Jund's removal suite is, and how strong its pressure/board presence is, it will probably have less room for it. But those decks that are just lacking the removal to get to the mid-game, it could be a significant powering-up.

K-Command? (MAYBE)
Abrupt Decay (Hell no, this is a catch all minus inkmoth Nexus)
Terminate (I think Jund players would seriously miss this)
Bolt? (I mean, it'll kill some 3/4 mana creatures, but not all of them, doesn't hit the face either)
Collective Brutality? (It could, but brutality is also a great all around card)
I think this is going to power up Junk and MAYBE sultai more. Or some Rock deck which would still be inferior to Jund and Junk
