Is anyone else watching the pro tour thinking "eldrazi looks like it could be fun to play, too bad I will never invest in it because of how likely a ban would be".
I didn't realize how much the latest ban changes affected me. I will probably never buy into modern now.
Sadly, the ban really did effect me, even if I wanted to play Eldrazi, I'd be very scared of a ban or nerf of some kind
Eldrazi could never see prominent play like this ever again, but the banning of Twin still leaves me too scared to invest in anything inherently powerful and relying on one or two cards (Temple/Eye of Ugin)
It's not necessary that Eldrazi will be still as high in the future as it is at this Pro tour. We need to wait to see what will happen in the near future (GP's and other bigger events) but I agree with what we've seen so far Eldrazi is in danger of Wizards' banning actions and if its percentages doesn't go down Wizards will indeed have to do something about it. I'm pretty sure they won't allow another bigger tournament to be so dominated by Eldrazi again.
Is PT so much dominated by the Eldrazi deck? Numbers please?
They claimed on the stream that the players percentage getting into day 2 piloting the deck was 83%...
It'll be hilarious if they have to ban something from the Eldrazi deck after hyping it up so much at the Pro Tour. Especially because it might not be so out of control if Splinter Twin was still in the format.
By the way, are there any actual decklists up for these decks? They don't seem to be on the coverage page, at least not that I see.
Either you thoughtsieze first turn or you thought-knot seer second turn not both. Urborg and eye give 2 black and a reduction of 2 generic. You have to have eye and temple to do second turn thought-knot.
What "emergency bans" have we had in Magic's past (any format) and what criteria were used? What win rate / conversion rate / top 16 / top 8 numbers would trigger a reasonable emergency ban on a deck?

Memory Jar was the only true emergency ban. Some information about the ban can be found here. Note it's mentioned that it's not just power level that caused its emergency banning.
Mind's Desire wasn't really an emergency ban exactly, but it was pre-emptive. The card hadn't gotten a chance to show its stuff in any notable tournament, but they correctly realized how crazy it was in Vintage and restricted it, which thereby got it banned in Legacy because this is back when the two formats were linked.
Are you serious? 60-80% of the PT meta are fast combo and aggro decks and you think that Eldrazi the best performing deck has a bad matchup against them? A deck that went 19-1(UR version) has a bad matchup against 60+% of the field? Yeah I don't buy that.
If it slowed down Eldrazi decks by a turn or 2 it gives other decks more of a chance...
Having a card stripped from your hand on turn 2 then having a hasty trampling 5/5 that can't be removed unless you 2 or 1 yourself on turn 3 so you're taking 9 damage is just nuts.
A god draw can win on turn 2
T1 eye, mimic, mimic, mimic
T2 Temple, simian a smasher swing for 20
In a rare moment of complete sincerity. I'll go shields down.
This pro tour looks extremely un fun. Especially with how copycat modern is, its likely a good way to foreshadow the format becoming un fun and just a race.
The new completely colorless eldrazi deck is basically a vintage deck ported to modern and it was compared on stream by pros to the format like cawblade was in standard.

Ban Chalice of the Void? Print a few artifact destruction spells with cycling (in white, green, and red) that still destroy artifacts when cycled so it doesn't have to be cast (and thus is un-counterable?)? Ban Simian Spirit Guide to prevent early chalice plays?
I love me a Simian Spirit Guide but it's true that the free mana is only abused in modern and would go a long way to slowing down combo decks.
Chalice isn't really the issue. G1 you can't remove it anyway and postboard most decks have ancient grudge, disenchant or some 2 mana removal. If they're tapping out on turn 4 to chalice for 2 you've got to be in a good position already.
The only issue comes when you're on the draw and suddenly half your hand and another 7-8 cards in your deck are locked out before you've even got a chance to do anything.

No more bans. The last series of bans have replaced one problem with another problem, nonstop for the last three years. Let's try something new: impactful unbans! The banlist has plenty of options. It's totally insane that Wizards is so conservative with unbans and then allows such crazy metagames to take root.

I was with you until the god draw stuff. Even UR Storm can god draw a T2 win. That shouldn't be a consideration as long as it's a tiny possibility.

EDIT: got the image from
This doesn't mean the next few tournaments will look like this, but if it somehow did, we'd be seeing an emergency banning for sure
Financially, I wouldn't touch this deck, way too much risk. Powerful decks are good, but they have to be acceptably powerful

Uhh, highly disagree with this. This seemed inevitable even with Twin in the format. Turn 2 TKS is pretty good at making the twin combo a chore.
Turn one: Urborg - Thoughtseize
Turn two: Eye of Ugin - Thought-Knot Seer
Not even twin can beat that
Agreed - on mono B Eldrazi my twin matchup was great, would have been even better with TKS.

We are likely seeing 3 to 4 Eldrazi decks in the top 8, 2 Affinity...and...what, infect, abzan company or Blood moon? This is disastrous
I wonder if this would have happened with the Twin Ban or if the Eldrazi printings was just a huge issue
