Here in Europe the PR prices are ridiculously low. Sea Gate Wreckages abound in presales between 1 and 2 €/piece. I'll still wait the PR before picking any cards though, last time I jumped on the hype train it not only proved wrong, but I had 2 of said cards in my PR pool
Is Sea Gate Wreckage that good? It seems to me like a niche 1-of or 2-of in certain decks that can empty their hand quickly and also need a long-term stabilizer vs. control. It really doesn't strike me as a universally powerful card.
Yeah I was thinking 1 of in Eldrazi maybe but how often are you cardless and not already way ahead in the board? Genuine question, but in my play testing not all that often. Maybe Affinty could run 1 or 2 as well.
This list does away with Processors entirely. I like the prospect of casting Thought-knot Seers and Reality Smashers earlier than they are supposed to be cast. Together with Drowner of Hope and the addition of Spatial Contortion, the deck looks like it can enact its game plan while simultaneously interacting with the opponent.
I highly highly highly recommend picking up copies of Sea Gate Wreckage as cheaply as possible. The card is INCREDIBLY powerful and should see eternal play AND be an all-star in Standard, Cube, Edh, etc. Repeatable card advantage ON A LAND with basically no downside is so ridiculously powerful.
What is a good price on these? SCG has them for $3 each. Also is the card draw really that good if your hand has to be empty to use it?
Yes - being hellbent is something that happens often in every format - to get out of that position with a land that can tap for mana (so it's not just useless) is unbelievable. In this deck especially, being hellbent goes right along with our midrange gameplan so for us to be able to get out of that position using a land drop which we can get from map is unbelievable and plays right into what we want to be doing. A land that can bury your opponent in card advantage? We haven't seen something like that since Library of Alexandria.
Just noticed, but isn't seagate wreckage basically Library of Alexandria? My wallet is making me cry. First steam sales, now this. All my free time budget is being eaten by MTG pacmen.
Edit; just realized other posters already mentioned library... mid day duldrums.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
I'm honestly not that impressed by it. Obviously it's pretty neat as a colorless instant with multiple effects, but I don't think I'd give up any slots for it.
Oh i have decided to go in a control way too. and i agree with what you said ( espetially with reality shifts a card i didt not considered!). Nullifier is very good and with caver on of souls on the battlefield it is just WOAW. By the way i really dislike ashiok, I ve tested her a lot and i think thta at the end she is not good at all.
here the reasons:
1- doesnt do anything when enter
2- alone is kind useless too
3- tapping out on turn 3 is the worst thing you can do with a control deck like this, espetially for a card that does nothing when enter the battlefield!.
At the moment (Also thanks to the spoilers) I am thinking on an esper buils. white gives us path tidehollow sculler and the new eldrazy displacer thAT I THINK IT'S AN AWSOME CARD for a control shell. Alone is awsome against aggro midrange decks, awsome vs tron, and have awsome interaction with strangler tidehollow, and nullifier too. OH and white gives us also good sideboard's stuff. IS still early too say, but i think esper shell is the best for a control build. The only real issue is try to create a solid manabase that can allow you also to use colorless mana! but i think with pain lands it would be possible!
I don't really play this as a control deck. I still play it as a Mid-Range list just like the BW, BR, and Mono-B lists. If anything I would describe my play style as a U/B Mid-Range Tempo thing. I use incremental, though not overwhelming, plays to push to fatties. Any incidental creature I play in the early game cruises in for whatever damage I can get until Herder/Sower buries them in card advantage. Other times Slayer and Nullifier just get me there.
I love Reality Shift. I've been toting it since it was spoiled. Generally I think its best in U/G lists that don't have access to the kind of quality removal that B, R, and W have. Shift is blue's Path, and considering the kind of removal U normally gets I think its the closest it'll ever get. Everyone also comments on the 2/2 vanilla being left behind but I just don't think its that big of a deal. Its never been a bother and the 2/2 is generally a strict downgrade to what you Shifted like a Bob, Goyf, Wurmcoil, etc. If the card is bad in a matchup, like B/W Tokens, then just side it out. Because this particular deck plays so many fatties it is very easy to out class the 2/2. Also, this deck really likes the exile clause to make the rest of our creatures tick. It is much more of a tempo play than Path to Exile is, which is much more of a "hard" removal spell, but in this deck a little tempo usually leads to your opponent staring down 3x 5/8s and that is how this deck wins games regardless of color combo. Mono-B, B/W, and B/R may achieve that early tempo with different cards (Bolt, Path, Dismember, GftT, etc).
Ashiok is not good for a reactive game but does play very well in a proactive game. Ashiok is a way to develop your board. S/he isn't a creature and doesn't effect the board but it does set up all of your other plays in the same way that Relic of Progenitus does. Also, like Relic, if it survives long enough for you to be "done" with it you can "cycle" it away to get some value out of it. Relic draws you a card and Ashiok can just put a creature straight onto the battlefield. Also, Ashiok gains you psuedo-life by taking some off the heat off of your life total and that has been huge in my experience I guess in that way you can think of Ashiok as an expensive Relic but I think he/r upsides are worth it. Its also nice to have access to Ashiok when your opponent brings in something like Stony Silence to shut down your exiling with Relic.
I'm honestly not that impressed by it. Obviously it's pretty neat as a colorless instant with multiple effects, but I don't think I'd give up any slots for it.
I think for me this is how I feel. I mean, I think its pretty good. May be good for a sideboard card. Its basically an upgraded colorless Dimir Charm. Like you mentioned though, what do you take out to slot it in? If it exiled the card that it countered I think it would be a definite over something like Delay in B/U lists.
An instant speed token for 2 is pretty cute though. I wonder how good that is in practice.
The following link is an invitation to join Pucatrade (card trading service though similar to TCGPLayer). If you follow the link then it awards me with tokens to exchange for actual cards. Thanks! https://pucatrade.com/invite/gift/86097

Really? It seems great and super versatile - it's a friggin' ramp spell that can stop the twin combo, spellskite, elves, infect, affinity, random sorceries - I look forward to trying it out at the very least.
If you are playing Sea gate, you should be jamming 2-3 LotV, imo.
Eh - Liliana synergizes sure, but I'd rather just drop more super value creatures, including ones that exile cards out of their hand.
This just dropped :
-
Eldrazi charm seems super super cool.
I think this is the card that pushes UB to the forefront for me. With the countering Eldrazi flasher. That seems like THE deck to play, IMO.
I'm even more on board with mono black after seeing this - with this many colorless requirements you have to consider C to be another color and I don't think this deck really wants to be three colors.
I think it at least warrants a few slots in the sideboard for mono-B if not BW. It's pretty great against Infect and Affinity, dedent against Twin and Scapeshift, and worst case you cast it eot or during combat for a Scion to block with or to ramp a little on your next turn. None of the modes are amazing by any means but it's a very versatile answer to a lot of things, and mono-B doesn't have Path or Souls to fall back on.
This entire deck is starting to look rather block dependent, actually. There are cards that are specifically from the set that basically replace any number of non-eldrazi options we are used to seeing in modern decks. If it wasn't for the land requirement to make it work it would probably be pretty close to standard legal.

This card doesn't help UB any more than it helps any other variant. As for not jamming LotV with Sea Gate, I think that is a huge mistake. I play this deck a lot, and I am very VERY infrequently without cards in hand. LotV is a very strong magic card and a natural inclusion when her +1 becomes "Pay 4 mana, draw a card and your opponent discards a card." Otherwise, Sea Gate will too often be a basic wastes in our deck, and thats not a card worth playing.
Agreed. best at SB slots. This looks very good against some match ups, but its still pretty narrow. There are a lot of deck I would not want this MD against.
It's interesting regardless. I'm very intrigued by all these colorless cards.
I have to say, first i was like: "BFZ is such a trash edition", "This block will sucks so much", "What did they do with zendikar, ughh", "DAMN u WZ !!!"
Now i'm like: "Love BFZ", "Best block ever", ... lol
I mean, when was the last time a single block created a competitive Modern deck ? Thats kinda huge
Khans created Grixis as we know it today, and several deck archetypes got a massive uptick. KTK->Origins->BFZ has probably helped the most in creating a new age in Modern than in a while in succession. KTK affected Grixis, Jund, Abzan, Burn, and brought in CCO as a deck. Scars of Mirrodin added Infest and rebuild Affinity to Affinity 2.0: Metalcraft.
I feel like this year has been a great year for Modern in general as there are many staples now in the field. The "Lego aspect" of the game is how decks like this one are made and the previously mentioned ones improve.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Seems to me it makes the painlands even better. Time to cash in on Underground Rivers?
I just got a playset of Caves of Koilos - can't hurt.
Cap - that's all fine, I just disagree. I'm not sure how you're always running a full grip of cards with almost no card draw, but it's fine. LOTV seems like a win more card here, not one that shores up any of the actual problems.

Bingo - to be able to MENTION Library of Alexandria in the context of a modern legal card is insane.

Hits most of affinity, Infect, cards in burn, elves, etc. Seems VERY VERY strong.
