Honestly if you get hit with a Pyro and don't have an answer, that is often the game right there, rebuilding is too slow even if you have cards in hand.
My point is that at least you have a chance. If you hit 3 land and can cast Lead the Stampede after being swept, it's better than what the other builds had to offer. My first impression is that this build is more resilient, because so far I've found it difficult to rely on Chord for a Forge-Tender or Dauntless Escort when you have to have it. The decks that are bringing in sweepers against you don't always back it up with a fast clock so you have a few turns to get back in to it.
Toolbox creatures like Scooze and Skite interact poorly with messenger and again no way to call them back after putting them to the bottom of the deck.
This is true, but that's why this build foregoes most of the bullets.
I'm interested to see which way this deck will evolve. Both the chord package and the Messenger/Stampede package are a blast to play.
You should tell the someone to familiarize themselves with the stack. There's nothing they can do to stop the ability from happening on your turn. Once you activate it, it goes on the stack and that's that. It will resolve after their removal resolves (stack order is in reverse).
On a related note, if you try to use Skite's ability to redirect an Aura or Infect card and they cast removal on Skite in response, make sure to activate Skite's ability in response to the removal, otherwise Skite dies and they still get their effect. Learned this the hard way recently.
Speaking of Skite and the stack, here's a gem some people might not know: you can steal Splinter Twin's AND Pestermite's abilities while they are on the stack to buy a turn. I mention this because some posters indicate that they have problems with Twin decks and IMO just another reason to run two Skites. Here is an interesting read of what Skite can and can't do if anyone is interested: http://blogs.magicjudges.org/articles/2013/09/26/modern-rules-problems-spellskite/
On the proplayer deck, I guess it deserves testing but I'm still thinking it's one of those decks that posts results on MTGO but won't translate to paper but feel free to test it out and post results!
Is there a consensus on which sideboard cards are the best for burn?
Kitchen finks: can be hit by company, 3 mana, 2 life, possibly 4
Nylea's disciple: 5-10 life, pretty much autowin if they have no skullcrack, slower than finks and risky (burn player will have drawn skullcrack ~50% of the time.
Essence warden: really good if you open with it
Bow of Nylea: seems great, 3 life a turn, easy win if you survive long enough
Leyline of vitality: an essence warden you don't have to pay for, and some pyroclasm resistance. Terrible if you draw into it.
Seems like finks + a bow seems like the way to go, but Id love to hear people's thoughts.
Some musings:
If you haven't drawn finks by turn 3, and are casting collected company, its 32% chance to hit a finks. So the advantage that finks can be hit by company is worth less than 1 life.
Burn players will draw skullcrack by turn 3 53% of the time. The real question is, will they always have the mana up when you go to cast a lifegain spell? seems pretty likely, but even if we assume they will 75% of the time, the chances of them successfully skullcracking a nylea's disciple is only 40%. Might be worth the risk?
Edit: nevermind, forgot about atarka's command. That pretty much rules out any "single-instance" lifegain spell, Finks it is!

I really like lead the stampede, and sylvan messenger, but I think it's important to ask what we really want to accomplish, and whether that is the right goal for the meta.
If the goal is to interact with our opponent, then having toolbox creatures and chord is very important. If the goal is to continue an endless stream of elves, then we want to play stampede/messenger.
Lets look at the metagame:
Affinity: faster than us, if we don't interact, we die.
Jund: Jamming endless elves = win. Card advantage wins.
Merfolk: A race that we can win, seems like a good MU. Honestly not sure which setup is better here.
Burn: faster than us. Chording for finks or skite here helps alot.
Delver: Not sure which style is better here.
Tron: Not being able to chord for burrenton forge-tender probably means losing here. Jamming elves doesn't help once they are casting wurmcoils. Terrible matchup unless you can hit beast within.
Grixis control: Jam more elves = win, edge to stampede/messenger.
Jeskai tempo/control: Same as above.
Twin variants: Interact or die since they will try to jam to combo to win. Chord for skite, rec sage, or even essence warden is really strong. Chord for BFT necessary for those 2 sieboard angers.
Bloom titan: Chord for BFT is pretty solid here since they bring in pyroclasm. Also hushwing gryf works nicely to stop pimetime triggers.
Podless: Chord for hushwing gryf is really strong.
Living end: Chord for tajuru preserver then overrun them? hahaha no idea how we beat this deck reliably.
Ad Nauseam: Chord for Rec sage to slow them, otherwise just race.
So basically if your meta is lots of aggro & combo, you probably want to keep the chords. If it's control/midrange go with the card advantage.
Personally I'm gonna keep the chords, and then put a couple sylvan messengers in my sideboard for attrition match-ups.
Alright, so Ive been trying a mix. I am going a messenger, two stampede and two chord for flexibility AND card advantage. I don't get to have chord as often as traditional build, but often times I feel like I have too many chords in my hand due to it being hard to cast. I feel like three is the right number even in the traditional build and I have been happy with two. The two stampede is great early or late game and the messengers help because they are elves. I cut Ooze because the matchups its good against are matchups that messenger and stampede are good against (BG midrange) and I kept in 1 skite. Basically, I have a virtual three copies (two chord and actual copy) of skite to help with the interactive matchups. The rest are elves to try to get that early win. I have also kept 1 fauna shaman for the loss of one chord so we can still be consistent. I will let everyone know after further testing.
I don't think there's a consensus on anti-Burn tech. I'm of the view/hope that eventually everyone will realize Warden is the answer. She doesn't need to be in the opener to be good.

I like warden too, but I feel like finks is better because you can typically block goblin guide and monastery swiftspear with it profitably. Do you feel like the constant incremental lifegain of the essence wardens outweighs the ability to block? I mean warden can definitely get out of control easily, but it can also just eat a bolt/searing blaze.
In the Stampede version, I would surely go with Essence Warden over Kitchen Finks. You can easily have gained 10+ life off of an essence warden by turn 3. It also has the ability to blank twin's combo with Exarch until its removed... attacking with a ton of 1/4's doesnt do much when we gained 1 life for each twin they created.
I don't know if that mtgo list is real good, and i suspect it is too clunky. Why play lead the stamped when you can have company and messenger ? Lead is leagues worse than the other two.
I'm happy to see someone play messenger though. I've been playing goblins in legacy for a lot of time and, although i'm happy they reprinted piledriver, i would have been a lot more happier with goblin ringleader. If i was an elves player (and i'm planning to be, i've almost acquired everything) i would be thrilled by sylvan messenger reprint and i think you guys underestimate a little the card. If you hit two elves with him it is already more card advantage than company (because you also have a 2/2 body on the field), but the absurd thing, and what made goblin ringleader so good in legacy, is the times when you hit 3-4 elves! I mean, which deck in modern has access to such card advantage, that is also uncounterable thanks to cavern of souls ? the answer is none.
I understand the fact that modern is a fast format where you usually need to interact or win quickly, and that collected company is less clunky because it puts elves directly on the field, but i am quite sure sylvan messenger is too good not to be considered. The perfect list is for sure still to discover, and probably it includes a mix of companies/messengers/chords.
Question - I'm thinking of getting into CoCo Elves as I'm nuts for good tribal decks. Problem is I only have 2 cavern of souls and currently can not afford more. Do you reckon this will be a huge problem? I solely play FNM, but our FNM environment contains some very competitive players. Mostly Grixis (Twin and Control), Jund and Abzan. Some Merfolk, Zoo and jank. No burn at all, funnily enough.

It shouldn't hurt you at all. The only decks you listed in your meta that cavern would be relevant against are the grixis decks. Elves runs 4 caverns because it can without being punished and not necessarily because it needs them. The decks run 30+ creatures which are almost all elves so Cavern is basically a forest with an upside.
0-of. Finks is better. Warden's problem against burn is that it can't profitably block. Further, you have to run it in multiples for it to have the desired effect, so it takes up valuable space. In a vacuum its a weak card and presents a catch 22 situation. Play it early, you hurt your ramp/development. Play it late and you miss your life gain triggers.
The best thing about it is its a one drop elf. If you need more of those, I guess run it. Otherwise, for burn help, finks is better.
Has anybody else tried using Garruk Wildspeaker? I have seen a lot more control and tried him MB in the Stampede version and he has won more than one game against those heavy removal control decks.
I am trying 1 Warden main and 2 in the side. I have been getting eaten alive by aggro lately (specifically burn and a bit of zoo) and I figured having a bit more life gain would help. I would rather run 1 Warden main than 1 finks since she works with EZ so I am trying the Warden path first.
I will let you guys know how it goes in the coming tourneys.
Went 3-1 this past FNM, winning against Junk, Jund, and U Tron while losing to Twin 1-2.
I could have played tighter vs Twin. Game 2 I tapped out turn 3 with a dismember in hand, and he combo'd me out.
Two players made comments about specifically not wanting to lose to Elves anymore so I may try to switch things up. One player was playing Grafdigger's Cage and the other mentioned upping the count on the Anger of the Gods. Thinking I will try out the Messenger build to see how it holds up through sweepers and because it is hit less hard by the cage. Alternately, I may play a different deck until the hate dies down.
Seems extremely "tight" but with HUGE sums of card advantage (with Messenger, Lead the Stampede, Coco, and 4x Horizon Canopy). I personally really like the way this looks; and Proplayer77 has had a TON of success with it. This is the version I'm playing and I went as far as changing up my Combo deck to look more like this too given it's performance.
Here is a link to a recent 4-o (and you can go through and see some of his other 3-1 and 4-0 results:
Been out of the loop for the last week so sorry about pulling this one back up but I wanted to comment a bit on it. This list seems like it would do very well vs control decks like Jund / Tron / and Grixus because it pushes really hard on the value generation. That means that it will push them to answer all the threats repeatedly which is nice.
On the other side, its going to be less good vs combo and fast aggro decks because the card advantage means often take up your turn. Its also going to be a lot harder to sideboard because it will have less consistency due to the loss of card selection from chord of calling. I feel like the point of Chord is to increase consistancy as sort of a wild card. Its not very strong vs decks that just kill everything which is where the performance of the messanger and lead the stampede will shine through but its stronger when considering singleton hatebears and sideboard creatures in general.
I think in general it has a bit of a trade off. It means that you will have to focus your sideboard more towards the combo and aggro tactics of the format. I wouldn't say that this is wrong especially if you are seeing an increase in these sort of tactics but in my mind its a trade off to focus more on control strategies which if that is what you are expecting I feel its a good consideration to make.
I don't think there's a consensus on anti-Burn tech. I'm of the view/hope that eventually everyone will realize Warden is the answer. She doesn't need to be in the opener to be good.
I think from the standpoint of considering any of it in the mainboard its the way to go. When I look at having 1 slots against burn, I disagree with you that I like the consistency of Kor Firewalker as its much harder for them to stop. I like having a single firewalker though is where I am at. If you are packing 3+ slots for burn I like your plan of having some wardens but I like the idea of a single firewalker first to be honest. I honestly have not handled this matchup much though as it stands. If I were considering doing a chord of calling though with access to either I would pick the firewalker over the warden in most cases.
For me, the main reason to second guess the firewalker is if you draw it, paying WW to cast it seems really tough. But as a singleton add for chord I like it more than I do the warden. I do need to test this matchup more personally but that's where I am sort of at currently on my own thoughts.
Another 2-2 Modern Monday. Went 2-2 at last friday's FNM and the two games I lose were against Tron. I sided in two Stony Silence's this time but running only 4x Razorverge Thicket isn't enough. I'll be trying it out with 4 Windswept Heath's and Temple Garden next time so I have reliable manabase for game 2/3 stuff that I board in.
Been playing the GW Version for about 3 weeks now at my lgs FNM and modern tuesday tournaments and after not doing so well at the SCG Legacy open on Saturday in DC, decided to try my luck in the 5k.
There were a few short of 250 people yesterday so the tournament was 8 rounds with a cut to Top 8.
I started off really rocking losing to RG tron first round due to pyroclasms in all 3 games and second round faced Little Kid Junk and couldnt answer a Linvala in time games 2 and 3.
Round 3 played against Grixis Twin: Game 1 ended quicking with a sorcery speed electrolyze being answered by a collected company into 2 archdruids and game 2 was able to chord for a Burrenton Forge tender to answer and anger of the gods and another chord answering an engineered explosives on 1 with a Phyrexian Revoker.
Round 4: Fish player was more focused on spreading seas my lands both games after I already had several mana dorks in play. Game 2 he tried to all in me with a Master of Waves and 9 tokens which was answered with Beast Within and he ended up dying on crackback.
Round 5: Esper control, Game 1 he ended up pathing 3 times, twice on Elvish Visonaries and another was on an Elite due to him stumbling on land drops and they were all the pressure I needed to apply, after the 3rd path risked putting in a Archdruid and uptapped to play and ezuri and overrun with 3 mana dorks. Game 2 he tapped out for a timely reinforcements that gave him 3 1/1s and put him to 25 after a fetch, an EOT and before damage company won me the game.
Round 6: UW Tron, Game 1 he only played a map and 2 lands before conceding to 2 nettle sentinels and a heritage druid so I wasnt sure which version I was playing again so I had to side in Forge Tender just in case. Game 2 he played a turn 2 azorius signet and followed up with a turn 3 Ugin and exiled my board away with no gas left in my hand went to game 3. Game 3 he landed a turn 4 Ugin killing my 2 nettle sentinels, I followed up with a Revoker, game went almost to time due to several aetherize on my ezuri and elites being sent back but managed to get through before a top deck O stone.
Round 7: Living End, matchup Ive been dying to try out, game 1 he never drew any cascade spell to combo off. Game 2 I played Mirror Entity turn 3 after sadly drawing it and praying he didnt respond, but thankfully it stuck, during his next EOT baited a chord for 2 to see if he had the combo or not, he went for to cast living end and I responded by mirror entity for 0 with an Dwynen's Elites, visionary and a nettle sentinel. Ended up getting another elite to speed clock up and mirror entity for 6 each combat quickly killed him.
Round 8: GW Hatebears, He had a turn 2 Arbiter and pathed a couple of mystics and llanowar elves for value but never really saw any pressure other than arbiter and I kept making land drops and playing more to the board and swarmed him. Game 2 he ended up gumming the board up with wilt leaf liege, couple of smiters and voice tokens and got me down to 3 at one point with me having an essence warden, 2 nettle sentinels, dwynen, heritage and ezuri out. Had to eot chord for an archdruid to do enough to overrun twice with ezuri for lethal.
Overall going from 0-2 to finishing 6-2 putting me at 28th place and actually cashing at an event was pretty awesome. I am gonna make some changed and probably take out kataki and worship for more beast withins or a dismember for Linvala or another Revoker as it was an allstar nearly each round.

There were a few short of 250 people yesterday so the tournament was 8 rounds with a cut to Top 8.
