Hey, may I ask why most recent lists don't play mana leak and sphinx's rev? For me it seems like mana leak is the only effective early answer we have against both combo and aggro (e.g eldrazi), I feel pretty vulnerable without it.
As for sphinx, if we don't use cantrips such as Anticipate or Think Twice, it is probably our only chance for not running out of gas in the late game. Wall of omens and spreading seas might not be enough. What do you guys think?
mana leak: for creatures, our creatures can stop them, and bigger things can be deal with path to exile/supreme verdict. Again, this deck is more proactive than draw-go. For noncreatures we have a problem, thats why hard counters like dispel, negate, spell snare and command shine right now. Mana leak COULD be good in early game, but also COULD be dead in hand. You really dont want that in a control/value deck.
sphinx rev: the "problem" with sphin rev is that is takes a "win, heavy mana" card slot, not a "cantrip slot". The "cantrip slots" :anticipate/think twice, serum vision, wall of omens, remand, spreading seas, shadow of doubt, squelch, etc slot are somewhat like 9-11 and you could mess around with that. But sphinx rev use the 3-5 slot reserved for heavy mana, big impact cards (non jace origins planeswalkers, ojutai, sphinx, wurmcoil engine, sun titan, etc). So the thing is not that sphinx rev is "bad", but when deckbuilding you have to ask yourself "i really want sphinx in this slot, instead of gideon?" for example.
Long story short: 2 cc counters are meta choices, and mana leak is not good right now. Sphinx rev is great as always, but compete with others threat/wincons.
As someone considering making the jump to this deck (since it seems fairly solid against Eldrazi), how necessary is Jace, Vryn's Prodigy? Realizing that I own every piece aside from that.

You can certainly play this deck without him, most builds i've seen that have been moderately sucessful have run without him. take a look at the previous pages and you will see many different takes on this archetype all of which have their strengths/weaknesses in different metas. Like just the standard wall of omens/finks/resto core is pretty strong already in a lot of matchups so you can definitely do it without jace. That being said I don't think jace is bad by any stretch, he does make bolt a lot better against us which is pretty annoying but if he does live being able to loot away extra lands or what not and possibly blank their creature or flashback a path or whatever is nice.
Negate almost always has some target, is strong vs combo decks/burn and can protect jace and ojutai so it doesn't seem too bad. I wonder why arashin cleric over lone missonary in the side tho. I'd imagine u just would rather have 2 power to trade with things and gain 1 extra life. Not sure if im missing something tho.
Edit: oops somehow didn't reply to the comment about negate i guess, my bad. I like that jace list's look i feel like there isn't too much early game stuff tho which concerns me a bit.
Yeah the curve on the deck is extremely high and you'd have to pay me to sleeve up cards like dismember, prarie stream and pact of negation, can't see why people like that list.

Yeah i've been play testing it a bit the past two nights online and its really fun to play like when you win you really win but i do feel that its very weak in the early game compared to builds with things like spell snare. If your jace lives you might be ok but then again theres no garuntee your opponent doesn't already have a ravager + plating coming at you. I really enjoy the jace + ojutai's command loops/interactions and its really really strong when u survive that long but modern has gotten so fast im not sure its likely. Dragonlord Ojutai itself has felt strong but i've only faced non eldrazi decks and i keep thinking what if they just had a 4/4 or 5/5 which i now have to trade with? seems like ass. On that note I do feel dismember is totally reasonable main board as a 1/2 of. Prarie stream has largely felt unnecessary and bad so i agree there. As for pact of negation its pretty eh. I understand why its in the deck like the idea is to be able to tap out for ojutai or go ham with a sphinx's revelation (which idk why there is 2 of btw. I mean looting it with jace in the early game makes sense but this is assuming jace lives and in that case why are we not running 4 jaces to loot these late game cards away?) then still be able to counter whatever is threatening. And it has happened a few times which is cute but man i opened that thing twice as well and without jace the card is stone dead, not something i'm the biggest fan of but i can understand the logic. My major problem as i hinted when i touched on revelation is that the entire deck seems to be based on or at least signifigantly better when we see jace and when he lives. So why are we not running 4 of it? Overall I think the deck is interesting and pretty amazing when u get to the point in the game it wants to be at. I just don't know how we get there. Perhaps there is some balance that can be attained by taking the jace/ojutai shell and shifting it as the win condition in more traditional uw with early interaction. Not sure that this is better than say just a 4 cmc planeswalker or whatever your win conditions were before really.
Against affinity i get 2:2 before SB and after sb 5:1 so in sum 7:3 for UW control
Against Eldrazi i get 3:1 before sb and after sb 6:0 so in sum 9:1 for UW control
To be honest i am very happy about this result before this weekend ( Event GPT Bologne)
i dont have time now to test against burn deck but i think its not bad MU. What do you think about my current list.
MD: i really really really want the 26 land, maybe cut spreading seas, clique or spell snare for it?
SB not sure about the Hallowed Moonlight in SB, 2 copies seems a lot, what deck do you want that? why not more dispel/negate that can also deal with some combos and counter wars (ad nauseam, scapeshift), i really think you need another supreme verdict in the SB, and RIP could be surgical extraction, disrupt better graveyard combo decks, not touching our own snapcaster and finks.
short story, main seem great, but in SB i would change some things

Have you noticed that having 3 Cryptics plus a s.rev is a little bulky (you have 9 total 4-CMC cards). I can maybe see in a slower matchup but a faster such as burn or affinity, this seems dangerous.
Thoughts?

I agree with all of this except the RIP vs extraction. RIP is a much better card and we don't care about the anti synergies in the matchups we want it in, a resolved RIP is generally going to stop their entire strategy and we can find a way to win afterwards. Extraction is a one shot that doesnt interact favorably with stuff like living end and storm.

true, but extraction is gold against tron/draziland.
and against storm and living end more counters (negate/dispels) do the dirty work, is not like playing against legacy dredge, where you can´t rely on counter to win.
while rip is better in some match up, extraction is more flexible and i really like that.

Where do you want extraction? Rip is an extremely strong option in several bad matchups.
My view is that the emeria lists have weak combo matchups without countermagic and operating almost entirely at sorcery speed and it's good matchups are matchups that are already good for the more pure control versions of uw. Sun Titan and the removal suite are great against eldrazi and we are seeing less combo, so it's definitely possible it's in a better place than before.

i SB in extraction in the following matchs: tron, color eldrazis, graveyard combo decks(counter to livind end+extract to the copies seem fine to me), and 1 copy in snapcaster not bolt decks.
and while RIP is great they could play around that, with beast within for example.
Before the bans i was playing 2 RIP and 2 extraction in my SB, but in the new meta the 2 RIP slots are something else. Again, is a meta call, and this could change in a new meta.
Didn't say the jace list couldn't beat eldrazi i said ojutai himself matches up poorly as a blocker which is something that had already been talked about really but figured i'd bring it up again. With 6 1 mana removals its not unreal to have one of them to stave off eldrazi til you hit 4 mana and can take over. Deck seems reasonable in that matchup but just not sure i like the less early interaction in general, need to play with it more.
And Keezy I think he was saying he would board in extraction alongside ghostquarter in the tron or eldrazi matchup to kill of their big mana land base or at least part of it. I can feel this vs tron but vs eldrazi i'm not sure i want a card that doesn't affect the board like extraction as they can still hard cast a lot of their thought knot seers such and beat u down that way.
I just got back from locals, went 2-2 with this list, any tips? (my sideboard is a bit janky because im missing some cards that i'm waiting for in the mail)
Round 1 Vs 5 Color Bring to light/Gifts Ungiven Combo 2-0
The guy's list was a mix of the gifts unburial rites combo and the kiki jiki restoration angel combo
Game 1: Theres alot of passing back and forth with him value gifting a few times and with me throwing out some walls and holding some counters until he eventually hard casted an elesh norn which I proceeded to path and get celestial colonade and restoration beats for the win.
Game 2: Mostly the same as the first game with some passing back and forth, some value gifting and me countering a bring to light for 5, until he gift unburial rites for Elesh Norn which gets met with a detention sphere and then I went for the restoration angel beats for game.
This was a very easy match as all I had to do was keep countering and drop some restoration angels here and there until I won. His deck was probably a bit clunky on his part.
Round 2 Vs UR Delver 2-0
This guy was making use of a few of the new cards from oath, the guy that draws for the second spell cast each turn and the flying haste prowess dude.
Game 1: Game 1 he wend for the usual delver shenanigans, with turn 1 delver, cantrips and swiftspears, at first this was pressuring my life total a great deal with delver hitting in the air, i eventually pathed it, threw out a finks, followed by gideon, went on the offensive and went for game with the help of cryptic to tap down his team to get gideon thorugh for the last 6.
Game 2: This was much of a repeat of game 1 minus the gideon, with him quickly dropping my life toal, but me eventually stablizing with some finks plus removal and getting finishing him off with Celestial Colonnade.
This match up felt heavily in my favor, as the finks and restoration lifegain was very powerful in swinging the match up and having supreme verdict as a panic button.
Round 3 Vs BG Elves 1-2
Game 1: His deck did its thing and swarmed me to death as paths and detention spheres can only do so much and I couldn't find the supreme verdict to blow him out.
Game 2: Once again his deck did its thing, but I had the supreme verdict this time to clear his board, he somewhat re cooperated as he held back a bit fearing the board wipe, but it wasnt enough and I closed out the game with Gideon and Colonnade.
Game 3: He had the nut draw this game but I had the verdict to kill off his board, then I drawstep Cliqued him, but he responded with collected company of the top, I ended up trading my Clique with his shaman of the pack, then I drawstep Cliqued him once again, and he responded with the co co off the top and got a shaman of the pack for game.
This felt like a very reasonable match up for me with the board wipes and other removal, but two top decked collected companys back to back was too much in the last game.
Round 4 Vs UR Eldrazi 0-2
These two games were about as bad as it could get, not soley based on the match up, which I feel is pretty even with the maindecked spreading seas, ghost quarters and supreme verdicts, but partially due to bad luck and me scrubbing out these were complete blow outs.
Game 1: I was on the play, and my opening hand was a plains, wall of omens, path, path, verdict, and two cards that were not lands, idk if that was the right choice in mulling this, but I didn't know what my opponent was playing and being on the draw I didn't want to risk it. Then I got a zero land hand which I obviously mulled, then I got two ghost quarters, a path to exile, and a wall of omens, and a detention sphere, I kept this thinking that if I drew a white source I could wall into another color and worse case scenario I ghost quarter myself for color to get the ball rolling, sadly, my opponent went eye of ugin into double mimic, passed turn and i missed land drop, then my opponent went for obligator attacked in for 6 and passed, i then missed my land drop and passed turn. Then my opponent went reality smasher for game with the mimics.
Game 2: My opening hand this game was similar to my first hand game 1, but with a flooded strand instead of a plains, seeing wall of omens to try to hit my land drops and plenty of removal, i kept it. My opponent on their turn, went cavern and passed, and on my turn, I hit my land drop and went for the wall of omens and I passed the turn back. My opponent then played eye of ugin into mimic and vile aggregate and ended. On my turn I missed land drop and passed back holding a path up. My opponent played a temple, into thought knot seer which i responded with path to kill of the vile aggregate, and he took my detention sphere, and then played a sky spawner and passed. Then I once again missed my land drop and was forced to pass back, and on my end had my wall dismembered. My opponent followed up with a reality smasher for game.
So these games were really frustrating for me, maybe it was due to bad judgement calls on my part, or just bad luck, but these games were completely one sided with my hands being unable to compete with any deck let alone these fast eldrazi draws. This final match kept me out of good prizes :(.
After thoughts: I may drop the mana leaks in favor of more spreading seas and maybe a condemn or a 4th verdict in the mainboard as the mana leaks felt really underwhelming throughout the tournament. I feel that condemn and spreading seas should be bumped up in the 75 somewhere though, also im thinking about adding elspeth suns champion or maybe a 26th land into the main. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated!

main:
-3 mana leak
+1 land
+1 hard counter (dispel/negate)
+1 spreading seas/ cheap removal (last breath, oust, condemn)
you could also add a elspeth or another big mana finisher (sphin rev, sun titan, etc) and drop 1 resto angel. You need the 4 wrath effect, but in the sideboard.
I've been enjoying success with 3x Detention Sphere and 3x Supreme Verdict in the main. Basically you just need to be able to survive and get to turn 4, sometimes with the sphere you can trap a few guys underneath it, I also like it as an answer to Planeswalkers. Granted, if CAN be Decayed but if you're up against allot of Eldrazi it's unlikely.
Running at least 2xSpreading Seas is really important in this meta, since it can really slow down allot of the aggro decks. My list runs 3.
This is where I am at right now, this list feels very nice. The amount of 4 drops might seem awkward on paper but it plays out pretty well given their impact on the gamestates. SB is kinda random, I need to test more to see what I like/dislike. Jace has been fantastic, works really well with Wall of omens (most things with -2/-0 are small enough for the wall to block) and turns your commands into threats.
Surfkatt: how is the martial coup doing for you? is the only card i think i have never tested (in this deck) and in theory id ont like it, but if some people are doing x1 that it must be for something.

I have only drawn it a few times but it seems great. Its nice to have more powerful spells for Jace to flashback.
Highlights from the night include mulling to 4 against Boggles and winning thanks to Cryptic and topdecking double Baneslayer, OHKOing Lantern on the last turn of extras after topdecking Detention Sphere, and getting to use Extraction against Abzan Company to strip them of their namesake card as well as Kitchen Finks.

Has a great Eldrazi match-up and seems well placed in the current meta let me know what you think!
How good was the dismember for you? And would you rather have 2 clique -1 snap or vice versa? This list is almost identical to mine minus those cards and a couple sideboard pieces, since my meta has Living end allot.

I've loved my one-of Dismember. Having a fifth removal spell is awesome. It hurts against Burn, Affinity, and Zoo (decks that are too fast) but I just swap it for Condemn in Games 2 and 3. Against Infect it's basically free, and against Eldrazi is kills most of their threats and even dodges a turn 1 Chalice of the Void.

I'll have to try it out, I mostly play modern with the guy who wrote the Primer for Living End, he lives on the floor above me. Though the few times I've actually gone to tournaments with him I've swept. Whether it be going to legacy playing dredge or showing up with U/W control for Modern.
When I get home I'll post my list, I work 10-9 every day but Monday. (Hence shy I don't go to tournaments often)
Either way, U/W control and UWR control are set up to be excellent choices to go to tourneys with, hopefully if there IS a ban come April, we're still in favorable light.

Running at least 2xSpreading Seas is really important in this meta, since it can really slow down allot of the aggro decks. My list runs 3.
4x Flooded Strand
3x Ghost Quarter
2x Glacial Fortress
2x Hallowed Fountain
5x Island
3x Plains
2x Polluted Delta
1x Prairie Stream

3x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
2x Restoration Angel
2x Snapcaster Mage
4x Wall of Omens

3x Lone Missionary
1x Negate
1x Spreading Seas
3x Stony Silence
1x Supreme Verdict
2x Vendilion Clique
This is where I am at right now, this list feels very nice. The amount of 4 drops might seem awkward on paper but it plays out pretty well given their impact on the gamestates. SB is kinda random, I need to test more to see what I like/dislike. Jace has been fantastic, works really well with Wall of omens (most things with -2/-0 are small enough for the wall to block) and turns your commands into threats.
I have only drawn it a few times but it seems great. Its nice to have more powerful spells for Jace to flashback.

PLayed against these 4 decks!
Won 2- 0 vs Grixis Control
Won 2- 1 vs Suicide Zoo
Won 2- 1 vs infect
Won 2- 1 vs UR Eldrazi
I've loved my one-of Dismember. Having a fifth removal spell is awesome. It hurts against Burn, Affinity, and Zoo (decks that are too fast) but I just swap it for Condemn in Games 2 and 3. Against Infect it's basically free, and against Eldrazi is kills most of their threats and even dodges a turn 1 Chalice of the Void.

When I get home I'll post my list, I work 10-9 every day but Monday. (Hence shy I don't go to tournaments often)
Either way, U/W control and UWR control are set up to be excellent choices to go to tourneys with, hopefully if there IS a ban come April, we're still in favorable light.
