It really depends on what you see as the need. Townsfolk has an obvious upside lategame, but then Raise the Alarm is almost always a better card. In Modern though, I think neither are good, there are much better options.
Hero was seen in a tokens deck at the PT, played by Craig Wescoe and Caleb Durward. It was only a 1-of because the format is fast, but the card is powerful enough to use it.
Mikaeus shows up in Melira Pod, it's a solid enabler there.
Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Gather the Townsfolk is a sorcery and Raise the Alarm is a instant.
The fateful hour from Gather is rarely relevant... if you're with 5 life or less, the extra tokens rarely are going to be relevant to turn the result anyway, while the instant speed of Raise the Alarm is very helpful, allows you to keep mana open for responses and using the spell on EOT if mana wasn't spent or placing surprise blockers.
Hero of Bladehold is a good option for the top curve of the deck, Mikaeus is a decent pump, but i wouldn't use him since he might be slow to be efficient, i would run only Honor of the Pure and Intangible Virtue to pump the tokens.

Gather the Townsfolk vs. Raise the Alarm
Are these cards viable in the main deck?
Mikaeus, the Lunarch
Hero of Bladehold
Thanks

Grixis Death's Shadow, Jund, UW Tron, Jeskai Control, Storm, Counters Company, Eldrazi Tron, Affinity, Living End, Infect, Merfolk, Dredge, Ad Nauseam, Amulet, Bogles, Eldrazi Tron, Mono U Tron, Lantern, Mardu Pyromancer
Your fourth best cheap token producer in Modern is Gather the Townsfolk, though, and it's fine.
