hi guys, im sharing my thoughts and experiences on game plan against aggro-loam decks. If someone posted a similar topic, sorry for posting this but please let me know if there is any, i am very much appreciate it. I will immediately delete this.
I experienced some match-ups on MWS, and it seems like Life from the Loam is their deck's ''life'', so any graveyard hate or extracting that card from the deck may aggravately weakens their deck. And these interaction will eventually slows them down about 50-percent, or higher, IMO. I am considering also their other cards such as Bob, Goyf, Countryside Crusher, LotV, and their retracing sorceries. But i am more concerned of the namesaked card. Do think the same as mine? Or other thoughts?
these can be available sideboards against them if you want graveyard hate, along with other spot-discard spells like IoK, and extractions like extirpate, IMO. Other names?
Life from the loam is indeed the heart of the aggro loam deck, but you have to remember that the deck does not win on loam alone. After all it is an aggro deck.
Obviously some graveyard hate will hurt their gameplan. Luckily we have some readily available assuming you run jund charm main board. I run 2 mainboard and i have an extra in the sideboard in case I need another for aggro or graveyard based strategies. I also have surgical extraction in my sideboard. In my opinion, you should run jund charm mainboard for both graveyard hate and for its pyroclasm ability which helps with aggro. However, your sideboard should have something extra specifically for graveyard strategies. I like surgical extraction because its instant speed, I can choose specifically what to hit out of their deck, and I can choose to pay with a black or 2 life. I think the only other reasonable spell that does this job just as well is extirpate because it has split second which is absolutely awesome. Other than those spells, you shouldn't be running any other forms of gy hate in jund except for maybe relic or nihil spellbomb. Leyline of the void is too costly with bob, and we don't want to have to mulligan to find one, unlike some legacy decks which can use leyline (especially against decks that heavily rely on the graveyard like dredge and reanimator).
I agree with Mastodon, except that I do not think that Aggro Loam is an Aggro Deck. It is a Midrange Engine deck that tries to beat you with Card advantage and Seismic assault. The only creature that every version runs is Goyf. Then others, such as Countryside Crusher, Bloodbriad Elf, Dark Confidant, Bloodghast, Eternal Witness, or Terravore have crept into the deck as well, but they are not all staples (Confidant is as close to a staple in the deck as it gets though).
'Aggro Loam' was given to the early versions of the deck because it aggressively Loams all its cards into the GY (It used to be run with Cycling lands and Ichorid too)
As crazy as it may be I've been testing 1 Surgical Extraction mainboard and have been loving it. People have argued that its too situational but I've never had a problem. It can single handedly take decks out of the game turn 1 or at least slow them way down (living end, splinter twin, melira). Just my 2 cents but I think it could really help against loam as well
with all of your thoughts shared, im having a great time pondering your ideas in my mind. In the first time i've encountered that deck, i am confused on what am i going to sideboard against it, then it came to my mind this idea.
I am aware of its legacy version and it is more powerful and synergystic than modern version, but the legacy version is REALLY relying on its graveyard, and its greatest asset becomes its greatest liability.
On boarding obstinate and anathemancer, i think anathemancer is your better buddy to add here.. Aggro-loam decks have heavy-counted lands around 26-28 i think, and only 3-4 of that are basics. He is a good critter on the board, 2/2 for 3cmc, dealing initially 2-4 damage early, and can be recur and SLAPS your opponents face for WHOPPING 7 and up DAMAGE.
Anathemancer isn't as good against Loam as it is something like Tron, I would say. A Loam deck can run on 3-5 lands, so Anathemancer won't hit very hard on its first or second passes. Loam might run 25+ lands maindeck but once it has all its colors in play, any other lands drawn are just fuel for Assault; they're not hitting play unless it's for a specific reason (Bojuka Bog, Tec. Edge, Horizon Canopy, etc.).
Cage does not keep loam in the GY, it does prevent them from flame jabbing
you which is their backup plan, it also stops them from flashing back faithless looting, but it does nothing to stop the dredge trigger on LFtL.
Your best bet is to just have 3 to 4 jund charms between your main and side.

You're correct about the Loam. That'll teach me to go by memory on cards I don't encounter very often.

I was thinking about that, but its a lame cascade if u get it near the end of the game

Problem, Raven's crime?
Yeah, I forgot to say that I usually bring in my baloth in this match up, too.
Anathemancer is more of a meta call. I like him, but in my meta, I'd rather blow up non-basics with molten rain to stop tron.

Grafdigger's Cage keeps Loam in the gy, Pithing Needle naming Seismic Assault shuts it down.
