I was once told that in competitive if you were playing green and not running tarmogoyf, you were playing the wrong cards or color. this hold true to most decks like combo and control decks. But in the format is there a cheaper alternative to tarmogoyf?
Troll Ascetic maybe? I don't want a replacement but a card that is playable in place of tarmogoyf. The deck I am planning to make is a mono green aggro deck that is half ramp half beatdown.
1. Skinshifter - same CMC, but need to invest mana every turn to make it effective
2. Leatherback Baloth - need 1 more mana, P/T equal to Goyf on average.
goyf is the best creature ever. You can't effectively replace it and you essentially have to run it in almost every deck because it is that good. Aggro, runs it, control runs it, heck I have even seen some combo decks board it in over the years to block opposing goyfs.

I believe the saying goes..."If you want it but don't have it, try not to need it."
IMO, there is no alternative to Goyf if you want to run a deck that needs something like him in it. Skinshifter is an ok card, but is a poor substitute...and nothing else comes to mind.

If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
Leatherback is especially a good substitute, but then if you're deck has a splash of any other color, I suggest you look through the other creatures from there. (At work so cant really make a huge list)
Echoing what everyone else said, there is no replacement for that guy.
Leatherback Baloth is barely playabe (except in a mono-g)
Personally, if it's half beatdown/half ramp, there is no other choice than Dungrove Elder. He'll be bigger in your deck than goyf. Goyf would be a 3/4 probably at it's biggest (land, sorcery, creature). Where Dungrove is a 4/4 at a minimum when you cast him (unless you drop him too early). His hexproof is so brutal. Put a Warhammer on him and let him clear your way to victory.
What's the problem with Goyf? You have 4 to 5 turns to find an answer before he gets powerful enough to be scary. The only people that want Goyf banned are the people who can't afford a playset.
To the OP, sorry, there is no substitute for Goyf. If there was a perfect replacement for Goyf, they wouldn't cost $100. I would suggest either building a deck that doesn't include Goyf or coughing up the dough for a playset.

How would Dungrove elder be bigger than Goyf unless you're playing mono green? A lot of modern zoos only run 5-7 cards that count as forests (this includes all the shocklands). It's very rare to have all of those in play at the same time. It's much more common to have 4 or 5 different types of cards in the graveyards. Last night in playtesting I was able to get Goyf at 6/7 by turn 5. My opponent thoughtseized me and made me discard Elspeth, and I killed his spellskite. It's nearly impossible to get dungrove elder that powerful by turn 5.

If you opened your eyes and read the opening post, he said he was building a MONO-GREEN HALF RAMP/HALF AGGRO style deck. If you don't see how retarded good Dungrove is, that's not my problem, the guy is BRUTAL!

Quirion dryad seems good too. Thanks for that alt. I have a play set of goyfs, but im so tempted to sell them, so looking for an alt for it would save/gain me some huge $$.
I think goyf should be banned. A long time ago, really ;/ It makes mi sick when i see that almost every competitive deck in almost every format if not using G and goyfs by themselfs it's splashing g for goyfs. Aggro, Control, Aggro-control, tempo and sometimes even combo decks... It's so boring. I hate this card! If Wizards wanted to create new and different format why, tell my why they did not try to make format without this f..ckin' sick card
Because Goyf is not broken in any sense of the word? He's a very undercosted, very efficient beatstick. At the end of the day, he's just a vanilla creature. He just happens to get HUGE.

Agreed. He absolutely does not need to be banned. He should probably be reprinted in a non-Standard set on a big print run, but that is fairly unlikely.
I feel like this is the 793rd time we've had this conversation.

Tarmogoyf is good, but sometimes his use/power gets a little overstated. He's not in every deck ever. In Legacy, decks like Merfolk used to splash for him, but that's less common these days. Turns out the mono-blue version is just as strong or probably stronger. Good tribal synergy is probably better than random fat.
Anyway, if you're trying to go with a half ramp/half beatdown strategy in green, have you looked at any Elf lists? They are inherently ramp AND beatdown. And just like Merfolk above, the tribal synergy within an Elf deck takes a hit by playing a non-synergistic card like Tarmogoyf. There's no reason to play an otherwise vanilla beatstick when you can produce game changing creatures like Regal Force and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn very quickly.

In modern your deck is essentially weaker unless you splash green and run goyf, with a few combo decks being the exception.

I agree with Drungrove Elder if you are playing basic forests and you ramp, Jotun Grunt is good if you are splashing white and want a good way to shrink opposing goyfs and knights of the reliquary.
Oh and recently some deck 4-0'd a modern daily event with 3 Watchwolf and only 1 Tarmogoyf, obviously because he doesn't have access to more goyfs. So it isn't that bad if you don't have money for him.

You will be fine as long as you don't base your entire deck around one card (like this)

This card has actually edged out Goyf in some Legacy decks like Maverick, due to its utility (and it still gets big often).

Scavenging Ooze is outstanding, but not Modern legal.

Sure, in the right deck. Needs mana dorks, though, and a fair number of them to be consistent at all. Most decks run maybe one (hierarch) or none.

This will change once control gets stronger, I think. It certainly has in Legacy, where there are actually G/x decks that don't run Goyf *gasp*.
