I'm trying to build a soldier deck based around Gideon Jura I'm wondering what cards would work well with him. I'd like to focus on the soldier aspect of the deck, and let angels come in during late game as a sort of "calvary". I've got a playset of Serra Angel in the deck as well as 3 Shepherd of the Lost. I'm mostly concerned with Gideon's +2 ability. How should I prevent the damage being done to him?
Have you tried searching "soldier" on gatherer for potential creatures?

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
Yes, I tried a search in Gatherer, but I was hoping to save some time and see what everyone else was doing.
I don't currently own a Gideon, but I've been working on the same Master of the Wild Hunt/Howl of the Night Pack wolf generating deck for the past few years and wanted to try something completely different.
I like the idea of sending out a good amount of First Strike/Vigilant soldiers, then giving the coup de grace with some angels. I currently have an Iona, Shield of Emeria and a Sun Titan but I'm not sure if they will work in this deck. I feel fairly satisfied with the 4 Serra Angels and 3 Shepherd of the Losts as my only angels in the deck, but I am thinking of also adding some Luminarch Ascensions just to give it a little bit more angel fire power.
Perhaps I will post the decklist (once I figure out how to do that) after the deck starts to evolve. That way some of you can tell me where I can improve it.
Shepherd of the lost is a pretty rough angel, if it had a better power/toughness ratio. Unfortunately, paying 4W for a creature that immediately dies to one of the most two common removal spells in the format (lightning bolt and path to exile are the most common) means it just isn't worth it. I love Serra angel, and I could see playing it, but to be honest, you'll be that much stronger just playing soldier tribal.

I found a link to an article that might be able to help you out if you're on a budget: http://wintargetgame.com/tag/gideon-jura-deck/

You are right that first strike is one of the better ways to prevent damage to gideon, although he'll still die to spot removal (all of your guys would, however). Thalia, guardian of thraben is one of the strongest soldiers you could possibly run being both hate and first strike. Other soldiers in contending could be field marshal (now they all have first strike and get bigger and affects gideon, too), champion of the parish, dryad militant, gideon's lawkeeper, icatian javelineers, ranger of eos, jötun grunt, kazandu blademaster, loyal cathar, precinct captain, porcelain legionnaire, benalish commander , etc. There are more playables, but these are many of the better ones.
