I've been testing both out lately. Being able to keep up damage while destroying a land can be a huge tempo swing for RDW and burn variants. I first started with just testing 4 molten rain's, and have been a huge boost to my Burn deck. Then I remembered our old coldsnap friend Cryoclasm, who does more but is a tad more selective. I feel molten rain is definitely a main deck option for great results if you are playing a quick burn or RDW aggro varient. But is cryo? Looking at the meta..
Affinity - Blank
Birthing Pod - Usually a hit
Infect - Hit
Jund - Only spirit Jund
Scapeshift - Most run blue, and Prismatic Omen turns it on
Tron - Blank
Twin - Hit
UR Storm - Hit
U/x control - Hit obviously
I was running a deck with Molten Rain for a while. It was good against some decks, and often had my opponents raging. That said, there are some decks that it is not very useful against, and sometimes it was a dead draw (not because I didn't have a target, but it was meaningless by that point).
I, honestly, found Molten Rain quite useful as a 3-of in a sligh deck. Land 1 and 2-drops, blow up a land and burn them at the same time, then keep on pressuring them. That said, I would NEVER go above 3 in the main. I'd most likely end up with 2 rains 3 blightning at my 3cmc slot if I'm not running 3-drop creatures.
As for Cryoclasm I would keep it in the side because of how narrow it is.
Oh yeah. I completely forgot to mention Cryoclasm. It's not maindeckable, and I probably wouldn't even put it in the sideboard. There are a lot of other card choices that are more relevant to certain archtypes.
Yeah I figured it was a stretch. Molten rain has been doing so well for me I was hoping to keep the theme going. Sadly I don't think there's any other that do damage as well which is a key component to keep pressure on. 3 damage and destroying a land is so huge against some of the greedy decks.

True, but over 3cmc is to much for my burn deck
