Be sure to get plenty of rest the night before.
Wear comfy clothes & shoes, or bring slippers.
Pack snacks that can double as counters (skittles, m&ms, etc).
Be very careful/watchful with any trade binders/valuables you bring.
Bring apirin/tylenol/advil/whatever. You will get a headache.
Bring bottled water/other beverage.
Bring food, unless you like overpaying for bad convenience foods.
Lastly... Don't take this one the wrong way... Do bathe/shower & apply deodorant the morning of. You will sweat.
Just to add on one thing. If you have any questions, and I mean any, call a judge. I hear so many stories of players coming up after a match asking questions that probably could of won them the game. It is what we are here for!
I'm coming back to Magic after a break between Scars/Innistrad block. Because I can't keep up with the general cost of Standard, I'd rather invest in a Modern deck and just update as time goes on. I have most of the cards necessary for several decks, I just want to choose where to truly invest.
I really enjoy playing draw-go control. I was a big fan of the U/W Jace/Collondae/Baneslayer decks in the Zendikar/Alara block and 5-color good stuff control in Alara/Llorwynn. I enjoy decks that are more interactive and require me to react to my opponent rather than just dump my hand and turn it sideways or hope to combo out.
Doing my research and talking to a few friends who play Modern, they've said that true control doesn't really exist - the format is too fast and the cards that let you do true control are either Legacy or Banned. The best I could do, per their suggestion, was UW Delver Tempo.
Delver Tempo
I don't mind Tempo (in fact, I enjoy a good control/aggro balance) but I'm not sure if its worth the investment since it seems like a deck that is going to evolve a lot. The current itteration looks too much like mid-range aggro than tempo/control.
I like the looks of UB Delver more but still not as sold on it - need to proxy it up and play it a bit I guess. Any thoughts on the longevity/fun/feel of these decks?
Am I right to fear that the banning of most "deck-fixing" cards makes control too inconsistent to really survive in the format?
RG Tron
My friends who have competed in Modern all say that I should just go with RG Tron. It's cheap (I have everything except Karn and Grove) and seems to just blow games out of the water. My only reservations are A) I hate combo decks and this feels awfully close and B) this deck seems "cheesy" and non-interactive. I blow my load or I lose - there's little thought in what to counter, how to play, etc. I just dig, dig, dig, drop threats and win or I lose. I feel like the closest it comes to "interactive" is if I dump Slaver v. a storm deck and try and go off via the storm deck just for fun.
Affinity
I played Affinity back when it was broken and enjoyed it just for its sheer ridiculousness. I have most of the deck (need to shore up the land base with the ban list) but this deck also smacks of minimal thought. I either have a nuts hand and win outright, or I dump my hand and draw enough gas to get there. How has affinity been performing? I love the potential for Inkmoth Nexus to just turn into a one turn kill out of nowhere mid-game but I'm not sure that spices up the deck enough to make it fun.
Others?
Are there other decks I'm missing? Again, I like interactive/controlly decks. Love running counters/responses because I enjoy decks that make me think and that punish me heavily for mistakes. I'd like to get back to playing competitively, so I'm looking for a top tier deck, but I don't need guaranteed wins in that I don't expect to go beyond a local PTQ or two at most.
Thanks in advance!
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): Control or mid-range tempo/control. The odd thing is that by what you described you sound like you would love playing Jund, but you don't have the Goyfs or Bobs.
U/b Delver is pretty good, it's Jund Matchup is rough though, and Tron tends to stomp on it... Another option is Junk with Knight of Reliquary, discard, Path, Liliana, and some other goodies that make it play more like a control deck than Mid-Range in this Meta.

Is _____ better is a really tough question to answer... in some situations it is, but in others it isn't. It really depends on your metagame, among other things.
D+T is a really powerful deck, but ask anyone who's played it a lot (and even some who haven't) and they'll tell you it takes a LOT of practice, as well as extensive rules knowledge in order to be winning a lot with it. Barring that, it's definitely a really fun, powerful deck.
Junk is a lot more straightforward, but judging by it's lack of popularity I'm not sure how good it is at the moment.

I would say Junk will be more fun initially it should be easier but as you get better with Death and Taxes, I think it will become more satisfying to play it. My friend spent so much on his legacy build and traded it away fast because he was doing poorly and misplayed a lot. kinda sucked.
^^^ That's the norm for a lot of people new to the archetype, it takes a lot of practice to get the most out of that deck. It's a shame really, the deck has done so much for Legacy since it's inception.

Junk is a lot better in Tempo or Aggro based Metas. My Meta had gone from Tron and Combo into Tempo and Aggro. I adapted by switching from Control against Tron and Combo to Playing Junk with Loam. Darkblast, Path, and Quicksand are pretty good, along with fat Knights and Liliana against Aggro. Tempo suffers against Ghost Quarter, Discard and Raven's Crime. I'm not taking down tournaments with it yet, because I still haven't gotten used to the switch yet. Taking 2 months off of Magic hinders you if you are playing purely competitive Magic. I know the deck is capable, but I haven't gotten there yet.
D&T I wouldn't recommend to anyone that has never played that that deck before. At least not for a competitive event. It takes a lot of knowledge about matchups and practice to be good with D&T. I used to play D&T a lot in Legacy, and by a lot, as I mean I played it for 2 years straight at least twice a week in competitive events. It took about a month for me to get good enough to actually win consistently with it. It took another 6 months before I was able to see all the paths to victory and the tricks that are possible with that sort of archetype.
The Modern version certainly will not be as complex, but it's still going to be an uphill struggle for someone that has never picked the deck up before. It does has the power and capability of taking down a PTQ level event in the right hands though.
Just to add, I love me some Death and Taxes.

Favorite Playstyle: Control that takes time and turns. Game resolved when sole big blue creature hits the deck twice. Or old style permission-like deck, if metagame/banned list permits.
Favorite Cards/Colors: Mono Blue > UB > UW. Snapcaster, Fog Banks, Jace, Inkwell Leviathan.
Budget: No single card price over $60
Staples Owned: 2 Snapcasters, some inexpensive blue/black spell cards(dismember, inquisition of kozilek, mana pierce etc...)
I am a newbie on MtG but played similar archetype on another ccg game for some years.
Unfortunately I do not like using lots of powerful silver coloured artifact cards such as Karn Liberated or 4 Engineered Explosives... so it seems Tezzeret deck or Tron deck is out.
I wish to know is there any place to put 1~2 Inkwell Leviathan(or something 6~8 mana creature such as Consecrated Sphinx), too. It seems even control decks do not use mana intensive creatures...

Ux Control seems like the archetype for you, that's for sure.
As for big dudes... most people don't run them because if you just spent 6 mana to play consecrated sphinx and then your opponent just pays 1 mana to send that sphinx on a path to exile, you aren't winning that battle..
Tron doesn't really run that many artifacts. For instance, LSV's list just has Expedition Maps and some mana rocks. Admittedly it runs other colourless cards, but if you want a U/x control deck with big creatures, that is definitely going to be your best choice.

Tron isn't really a control deck IMO, it's more of a ramp deck that keeps pressure off itself while it does its thing.
A possible good option would be esper gifts; a control deck that uses gifts ungiven to search for unburial rites and a big dude such as elesh norn, grand cenobite. Basically it's a control deck that wins by reanimating something.

Eh, some versions are more controlly than others, and it's always been difficult to figure out where ramp decks should go in the aggro/control/combo axis. You're right, though, LSV's list at least isn't really control now that I look at it more closely.

I'm interested in playing the Modern format and currently I want to make a deck.
Generally I like to play aggro / midrange deck.
I don't really want to spend too much on one deck (200 will be the max budget and if possible I want to go below that) and I will rarely go to a PT / GP.
Usually I play on my LGS tourney (for standard) and I saw the meta for Modern tourney in my LGS is quite diverse (there are some tron, melira combo here and there, some affinity / Tempered steel, several RDW / goblins, merfolk, and Delver - of course, but it's not that many).
Basically I have already owned a W/B Token deck for standard. I already have Isolated Chapel, Hero of Bladehold, Lingering Soul, Honor of the Pure, Midnight Haunting, Intangible Virtue (all of them are playset), and two Vault of the Archangel - and other generic cards for W/B Token.
I'm wondering whether W/B token is a good start for me to go into Modern format. Generally, how competitive is it?
WB Tokens top 8ed the most recent Modern GP (second deck listed). I haven't played much with or against it, but if it can top 8 a GP it's probably good enough for FLGS-level play.

Hi, I'm going to the GP in Columbus and am still wondering what deck to play. I've tried a lot such as Martyr White, Mono-Blue Faeries, Red Deck Wins, Ur Storm, U/x Delver, etc. and haven't really liked any of them.
However since I'm a player from the mid-late 90's and have always like Merfolk, I've been considering that build, but am not sure how competitive it would be at a GP. I know in Legacy it was quite good but in Modern not so much (however this could change with M13 additions).
Faeries was never fun, a lot of waiting around doing nothing. Red Deck Wins was kinda balls out and I hated having an empty hand so quickly. Martyr was ok but also pretty boring, didn't feel GP worthy though. Storm is just dig and done, I don't like that, not enough substance.
After considering Merfolk, I'm also considering Hivemind since it could be a surprise deck which is always a good thing at a GP.
What do you guys think is a good deck to take? Is Merfolk good enough or can it be with M13 additions? Is Hivemind too inconsistent? What other decks that are good enough?
** I hate playing decks that EVERYONE else plays. I'm talking about the decks that 90% of the field plays like Jund. I will never play Jund simply because everyone else plays it... just how I feel about it.
*** Another thought: Maybe Cats are viable since M13.

UR Splinter Twin. Nice combo deck that isnt storm and you have one of the lands for it (and it should be within budget as well)
Favourite Playstyle: MidRange/Tempo >Aggro>Control or Fancy combo (actually i'm kind intrigued by the pod/kikijiki lists)
How competitive: Local Tournaments then maybe a ptq/ or mtgo (i'm not sure which one could be better, so even a suggestion here is nice)
Favourite Color: It's almost anything fine. I'm not a great fan of red though.
Budget: 200ish. But i could rise that to 300-350ish if i can re-use most of the deck to play something else (always modern-legal).
Staples owned: Mutavault set and Aether Vial set. Some counterspell (2-3 cryptic, spell snares). A single Temple Garden and a full set of green/black fetches
Mutavault and Aether Vial = Merfolk. It's a good Midrange/Tempo deck that just got a nice boost from M13.
"I'm with ya on the Kiki-Jiki thing, he's awesome"
Trying to decide between MWC, Death and Taxes, and Mono U Faeries.
I love all 3, though faeries is too expensive to build immediately, and I would have to build up over a little while. Is it worth it or are the other two as good or better? I want to play death and taxes, MWC, or Faeries so please no other suggestions. I want something really challenging to play because at this point after playing since mirrodin I kind of get bored of easy decks. I heard that faeries takes a lot of skill, but not sure on the other two.

Sphinx of Jwar Isle could be good though...
Both merfolk and hivemind are quite good in modern right now (merfolk now with m13). I'd test both a bunch and see which you feel more comfortable with.
How Competitive:Local, (GP eventually)
Favorite Cards/Colors:Red, I like all cards
Budget:$250
Staples Owned:1 Steam Vents.:(
Wait... are you just saying that to get another crappy deck in the GP cause you're going too? lol jk ;), thanks man.
UR Splinter Twin. Nice combo deck that isnt storm and you have one of the lands for it (and it should be within budget as well)
Mutavault and Aether Vial = Merfolk. It's a good Midrange/Tempo deck that just got a nice boost from M13.
"I'm with ya on the Kiki-Jiki thing, he's awesome"
I love all 3, though faeries is too expensive to build immediately, and I would have to build up over a little while. Is it worth it or are the other two as good or better? I want to play death and taxes, MWC, or Faeries so please no other suggestions. I want something really challenging to play because at this point after playing since mirrodin I kind of get bored of easy decks. I heard that faeries takes a lot of skill, but not sure on the other two.
Edit: anything Bant is awesome too

You seem to definitely be looking for a tron variant, and probably a Gx one at that.
i would definitely say a Gx Tron would be best, but if you want something different, you can try Aggro Loam as a midrange control deck, or ritual gifts.
