Just started playing Magic again after a 5 year hiatus, currently play Legacy but looking to build a Modern deck as well.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): I'd probably say Tempo, I play RUG Delver in Legacy and really like that deck.
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): Local Tornaments, but would like it to still be competitive enough to take to a PTQ
Favorite Cards/Colors: Favorite color is blue, I really like Gifts Ungiven, but have never played it in a deck.
Budget: $250 plus I can probably trade for some stuff.
Staples Owned: 4x Dark Confidant, In the process of getting 4x Tarmogoyf, all 40 Shocklands, most of the Painlands (I think I'm missing 2 U/B ones and 1 U/G one), All the Tron Pieces, Remands, Wrath of Gods, 4x Aether Vial 4x Arcbound Ravager, 4x Chalice of the Void, most cards from the Ravnica and Timespiral Blocks
Decks I have been looking at: Death and Taxes, UW Tron and other Tron Varients, Affinity, Jund and a few Gifts decks
Thanks
With that big of budget and being in the process of getting shocks and goyfs, RUG delver in modern is definitely a playable option. You'd just need cliques and a couple other cards. WUR delver with isochron scepter is also a pretty good deck.
Other than that D+T, Gifts varients, Jund, and non-UW tron also seem like good options. They all can be competitive; I'd say D+T takes the most skill to master, but it's my favorite of course.

Cool! Thanks for your help. I'm going to throw together a bunch of these decks with proxies and see how I like them.
Favorite Playstyle: Control > Tempo > Combo (I really dislike sligh-like decks) How Competitive: Local Tournament Favorite Cards/Colors: Blue > White > Black Budget: $ 100~200 right now, $ 500 over the next months Staples Owned: Almost everything that is currently Standard legal (started to play again when DKA came out) such as Geist of Saint Traft, Snapcaster Mage, etc. NOTHING pre Scars though
My goal is slowly acquire all the modern staples, but for now I want to focus on one deck.
Any suggestions guys? Thanks!

rafab: I think UWR isochron delver might be a good option for you. Something along the lines of this list. Saying as you already have the snapcasters and geists, you could definitely finish it off with $100-200, but most of that would be going towards the manabase. Luckily, if you are trying to acquire all the modern staples, manabases are included!

look up esper teachings in modern. would seem to be a nice fit for you.
Tom88 and kwelts, thanks so much for your replies.
I think I'll proxy a UWR isochron delver and give it a try. Looks like fun!

Thanks again! I can't wait to play some Modern tournament... last time I played a non-standard format was at GP Buenos Aires in 2001 haha
I will be lurking these forums from now on

Hi all, I need some help in deciding to either play Mono White Control or Garga Restore Balance; I'm bored of aggro decks.
Favorite Playstyle: Right now I'm into control with a little aggro. How Competitive: For fun, casual Favorite Cards/Colors: Non, really. Budget: $50 Staples Owned: Standards from M12 onwards, mostly of Blue/Black/Green/White
I need a deck where it can answer to any meta and is fun.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): Control.
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP):FMN to ptq
Favorite Cards/Colors: Blue, black white
Budget:300-500
Staples Owned: Fetches and shocks.
Basicly he loves standard solarflare. He loves the GY interaction, as well as the ablity to adapt to every deck. To quote him, "I like that it can play a million games, and they all feel different"

I am going to be playing in the Modern GP in Columbus Ohio in about 2 weeks. I play mostly FNM level magic but I have also played in 1 previous GP(legacy). I have access to a few different decks and I'm having a very hard time deciding what to take. I have access to the following decks:
Soul Sisters (Consistent but boring)
R/G Tron (Most comfortable)
U/R Delver (no goyfs or RUG delver would be the obvious answer)
Martyr Proc (Seems like it could be a metagame call)
HiveMind (no one has SB hate for this)
Going into an unknown meta such as a GP, with limited exp. in the format. what would be my best bet?
I'm pretty familiar with all the decks listed. Delver is the deck I am least comfortable with.
(if this is the wrong place to post this feel free to move/delete/angry-red-text me)

Being that it is your most comfortable, R/G Tron should be the deck you run. If you are not feeling comfortable with your deck, then you will not preform as well. It is all up to you though. Good luck at the GP
What he said. Playing a deck you know how to play is almost always a better idea than trying to play the "best" deck, especially in a format as diverse as Modern is right now.

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
I know how to play all of them. I think I prolly LIKE to play Tron the most(Who doesn't like playing Karn?) I'm worried about the fact that EVERYONE knows what tron does and how to beat it.

If you're most comfortable with R/G Tron, then play R/G Tron. In a tournament the size of a GP, you have to play something you know in and out or you'll just get blown away by your opponents.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
If you know how to play them all reasonably well, I'd go with Hive Mind. Hate for it is few and far between.
I agree with this. Go with Tron or Hive Mind, both have their own game plan and can work withouth having a full understanding of the meta. If you play Delver or some durdle deck and don't know the mechanics of every other deck you will just get blown out.
I'd say hivemind if you actually have the deck, but I guess if you aren't comfortable with it, you could play tron. Tron will probably be tough to win with though.

I do own the deck. I was having serious issues with consistency when playing it, assumed it was a trait of the deck. If that isn't the case and it really is pretty consistent than I will take another look at it.
Always play with what you are most comfortable with. I would always rather play a deck I know in and out then play the best deck that I know very little about.

THIS! That is actually one of the things I specifically remember from Legacy GP Columbus. Many many people did not do this.
