If you can say what you really like to play with then we could also name a few of the other decks.
Hey folks, it's my first time logging on for about 3 years. Modern seems like the kind of format that is up my alley especially after discussing with some friends of mine. I like to play control decks, I like to screw with people's plans and sometimes even control them so completely that they just have a downright terrible time. Way back in the day I was the guy that played stasis, necropotence, academy blue, pox, etc. I have fun with combo sometimes, and enjoy giving the occasional beating with a well-tuned aggro deck (think stone forge mystic or similar).
I've always enjoyed the rock in its various incarnations, and I'm. leaning towards a BG rock as I have a solid compliment of cards relative to the deck, though missing tarmogoyf and Bob. it's also been pointed out to me that I have most of the necessary components for a pod deck, though that really seems much more combo-y in nature and not necessarily for me in its current form. before I quit I remember tinkering with a BG rock that tried put pod into for fetching utility critters with CIP abilities, and eventually things like Wurmcoil Engine or Sun Titan, etc. Is there anything like that out there? Alternatively, I also would like the current BW smallpox I think, and think. pod might have some utility there as well.
tldr: I like control, am interested in Smallpox or The rock archetypes specifically, but also in birthing pod for a toolbox/utility type setup.
edit: currently own sets of BW, BG, GU fetches, and generally strong cards in black green and white from alara, zendikar, and the new mirrodin block, plus a few older things as well.
Hopefully this would be the right place for this. Not looking for deck tech discussions or anything of that sort, just poking around to see people's personal opinions on what types of decks would be decent to build for the purpose of FNM and possibly upgrading in the future for more serious ventures. Currently I'm thinking of three different ways to go. Obviously this is all subjective to each individual's play style but let me know nonetheless.
Soul Sisters: This would be the cheapest and probably least likely option for me. Price is usually a factor for me and this is by far the cheapest option I could go. Deck is fun to play but does get beaten quite a bit. Rough cost: $150
B/W Tokens: I see a ton of these decks since the Modern Event Deck was released. The event deck itself wasn't that great, I know, but I did play around with some deck building sites to make a pretty threatening deck out of it.(Plus got it for like 40 bucks, figured why not?) Pumping some money into it and taking out the terrible cards actually makes the deck pretty dang good. This would be the second cheapest option as I already have some bones of the deck. Rough cost: $280
Merfolk: I've always had some strange draw to Merfolk cards. I have no idea. They're fish people, what is there to love about fish people? I just...like them. I enjoy the beat down style of a good Merfolk deck. With so many options for Merfolk based decks there are some amazing decks that can come out of it. This would be the most expensive option as I would be starting from scratch. Rough cost: $500
Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm a terribly indecisive person and while my style of play is most likely different from others, I'd still like to see opinions. Also any opinions on decks of similar cost are welcome as well. Just looking for something competitive to take to the shops.

other cheap budget competitive decks:

mono U Tron
So far, I only play the L-formats (Limited, Legacy and eLder dragon highlander). With Modern establishing itself more and more in my area, I would like to join in on the fun.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): Combo. Especially decks that allows me to burst out massive X-spells. Too bad High Tide isn't Modern legal ...
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): FNMs, local tournaments
Favorite Cards/Colors: Black/Blue/Green. Blue Sun's Zenith and similar stuff
Budget: I should be able to trade for or borrow most missing cards, so anything goes
Staples Owned: a huge amount of 1- and 2-ofs, thanks to EDH. Shocklands, some fetches, Legacy stuff. No Goyfs though (traded them for duals).
Note: Since I occasionally will both judge and play - if the tournament is small enough and at Regular level - the deck should not be too durdly.
Mono-G Genesis Wave plays a little bit like High Tide... at least as far as modern will allow. Perhaps worth taking a look at? It has topped some MTGO dailies, but that's about it

I used to like decks with the UR shell(Twin and Delver, mostly), but with the resurgence of BG/x, I can't say I feel comfortable playing it in a large scale event. I'm at my best when I'm playing the beatdown role, so I'm basicaly looking for the best aggressive deck of the format, but I can't seem to decide.

Affintiy is the best agressive deck in the format. There's nothing else outside of UR decks that would fit your playstyle and be tier 1.

My current Meta is Infect, affinity, soul sisters, blue moon, Pod, scapeshift, BG Rock, and Tarmo-twin. Which deck would have a better chance maneuvering through that meta U/W Gift Tron, Mono-U Tron, or Affinity?
In theory, Infect could be decent in the hands of a good Infect player. I think you can probably do decently with it; I've even considered trying it in an FNM or two. But I believe that there's no way it will be as consistent as Affinity, even Affinity has more hate cards against it.

I wouldn't do either Tron. I don't think that they would do well in that metagame. I think Affinity seems like your best bet. At least of those decks listed, only Soul Sisters will be able to play Stony Silence (I doubt Pod will have it since it hurts their destructive card).
EDIT> I actually don't know about Gift Tron. If it's like the other Tron(s), it probably has trouble with quick Aggro and that metagame can provide that. From what I heard, the U Tron variants actually have a good matchup vs. Control decks like Blue Moon and Scapeshift. (I know Scapeshift is Combo, but plays early like Control).

to be honest, i think that affinity is one of the hardest deck to play in modern (to me THE hardest) at the moment, playing around hate in g2 and g3 is really an art in that deck.
aff is like playing dredge before, playing g1 and when no one expect it is no brainer, but playing around hate and expecting the deck, is really really hard.
Hi guys, I have Modern Tournament to go to tomorrow and I am not sure which Modern deck I should play. I have three:
1. Boss Sligh - Last Modern tournament I had a weaker version of this deck which I played, came in 3rd, had to bail when got into the top 8 playoffs though. The improved version does feel a little bit off to the last time though.
2. G/W Auras - I love how this deck runs, but I am missing 3 Daybreak Coronets, no one has them. I'm only able to play with one, so I am using extra Unflinching Courages. I also find it lacks removal for mana dorks and such that Boss Sligh can do at any moment.
3. Merfolk - Missing 2 Kiras for the sideboard and also find it has little removal.

I have not played Modern in a couple of months. I currently have Jund sleeved up (with main deck Courser of Kruphix & Anger of the Gods). My meta is Affinity, Pod, and Bogles. Should I stick with what I have? Or is there another flavor of Jund that I should try? Or should I switch to BG Rock or BGw Souls? It seems as though Courser/Anger Jund has fallen out of favor, and I am not sure why. Thank you!

It is true that Affinity does have a lot of different lines that you could go down in any particular game. I guess Infect would probably be a breeze in the park comparatively.

1. I wouldn't play Bogles without 4 Daybreak Coronet. It's probably the most important card in the deck because it helps you race certain decks. Against decks that you don't have to race, it may be okay to run without them and just more 1 mana Auras like Keen Sense.
2. Merfolk is supposed to be like that, as it has a high creature density and Aether Vial, which gets sided out in some creature matches. Vapor Snag, Spell Pierce, and maybe Steel Sabotage is all you should need for removal. (maybe Dismember too)
3. I can't speak much of Boss Sligh, but it's hard to argue against something with "Boss" in it.

I think Courser has fallen out of favor a bit. Anger is probably best relegated to the SB; you don't want to risk it being poor in some game 1s. I personally like Andrea's (the Grand Prix "King of the Hill" guy) list. They all have minor differences, but I still think Jund is the best against Affinity, despite Junk having 2 Lingering Souls.

Glad to have helped. Between that article and the one by Willie Edel on CFB over a month ago (Jund/GBx/Junk), you get a lot of good info. I would caution that a lot of other people have read these articles (I've seen it at my FNM), so you could try to "next level" them by preparing something for the mirror.

My favourite playstyle would have to be midrange or control. I don't always make the best decisions when it comes to combat, and it's turned me off aggro for the time being.
Competitively, I'm looking to get into more competitive play rather than only with friends, but being in Australia makes it hard to achieve that. Thus, I'd mainly be playing at local tournaments.
Favourite colours would be Orzhov, and my favourite card would probably be Tragic Slip. Gave my friends PTSD with that card when we all started playing.
I own 4 Thoughtseizes and 4 Mutavaults, with 2 Overgrown Tombs. My budget would probably be around $500, depending on how confident I am that the cards will stay valuable if the meta shifts.

Turkey tron if you sell all four mutavaults you might be able to get 2-3 bobs and with the rest you could purchase of of ebay for around 400 dollars without tarmogoyfs and liliana
you can replace goyf for skin shifter

Hi everyone, I am looking for fringe MBC builds but I'll take any advice. I don't want to play 8 rack. I'm returning to modern after a year's absence and I'm a newer player. I'm comfortable with the rules but somewhat unfamiliar with most modern decks and have never played a remotely expensive deck. In that fashion, I'm looking to brew or adopt a pile. I want to have fun and tune and shaft people, I'm less interested in spending money and actually winning.
I played the old mono black infect list with the crusaders a few times at FNM before I stopped playing, so I have lots of black discard and removal. I do not own thoughtseize. I'm curious to play something less creature focused, and something non infect.
Favorite playstyle is probably control but I really don't know. I would probably like combo.
I'm lightly competetive. I'd rather play a deck I find interesting, but of course losing gets boring.
Favorite color is black. Favorite card is probably fog.
Budget is $50, plus the trade value of my drs set. I'm not willing to buy fetches at this time.
Staples I own are abrupt decay, og tomb, inquisitions, inkmoth.
I'm probably going to head off to deck creation and brew a pile, either selling off my green cards for some silly MBC list, or something with abrupt decay, dreg mangler and fog . . . but I'd like to see if there are any better alternatives

Splinter Twin is a UR based combo deck that basically tries to put a Splinter Twin on a Deceiver Exarch or Pestermite to make infinite tokens with haste. There are several different versions of that deck but the straight UR one is the most played one.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I searched for "Andrea GP King of the Hill" on Google and found the deck list and article on CF.com. Really good stuff. Thank you for the rec. It was perfect.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Competitively, I'm looking to get into more competitive play rather than only with friends, but being in Australia makes it hard to achieve that.
BW Tokens does fit your description
Here is a sample list that costs 411.49
http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/11907#paper
The Modern Event deck is also a BW Tokens deck so you could buy that and upgrade from there
http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/299a
The is also Dead Guy Ale which is more midrangey than BW Tokens but it's also much more expensive with this list costing 1135.38
http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/11789#paper
you can replace goyf for skin shifter
and liliana for geths verdict or any edict effect

Orloro
sharuum the hegemond

but honestly if you want to play competitive at only a local store go U/R storm if you pilot it for a while you can get really good + it is a top tier deck. That has been played in grand prix, pro tour and has won it also seems to be doing well right now
G/B rock is the second or most expensive deck in modern other than jund and maybe splinter twin with goyfs

this! BW tokens is your best choice!
sell the mutas NOW, they will drop a lot when they leave standard.
If you want to keep muta, the only deck that play it and fit your budget is merfolk
