I played Jund for the first time in a "big" tournament last sunday.
I went 3-4 but had a blast playing the deck. The most disappointing card was BBE. Boarded some of her out pretty much every game. Here is the list i ran, i copied a lot from the most recent Reid Duke video:
Boarded in Huntmaster pretty much all games, Kalitas was also great. Languish did some work for me against Merfolk (Master of Waves) and Spirits. EE felt good against Spirits aswell when they have 2x Drogskool Captain.
Hey guys, i´ve been "off" lately and totally skipped how things in magic has been going for last 5months, been hearing rumors that Jund has some "difficulties" at the moment? I think new incoming Ravnica allegiance aint bringing anything cool stuff to our midrange goodness i´ll be eating chips and waiting for Unban/ban announcements.
What you think that is there something getting kicked which would help us in our current state in meta?
EDIT: seen some spoodlers and chandras in our decks
Thats what I am thinking too, BB can buy needed time. I will test the card against aggro a bit and see how it goes I think.
Among the worst feelings in the world is to see Liliana, the Last Hope across from Bitterblossom. I played against Faerie Tribal a few weeks ago and his Bitterblossoms contributed significantly to his loss.
One game, I snatched his BB on turn one and he snatched my LoTV on turn-two. My turn-two Goyf was HUGE!
Another game, he played BB turn-two and I played Lily turn three.
BB requires some life-gain to balance the slow bleeding. I don't think Jund typically runs enough. Scooze and Collective Brutality are about it. Scooze's ability to gain life is highly match-up dependent and Jund doesn't seem to like CB the way Rock does.
Oh I understand you. I personally am pretty uncertain how this will shape up for us. In theory, Tron, Amulet, 4c Whir and Affinity will rise again. And I really don't want to see Amulet in particular becoming even more strong now. Nevertheless the ban was necessary.
For Jund specifically, its tough to say how it will shape up though.
@chaos021 : I prefear play against amulet, 4c Whir or Affinity with Jund. I won against KCI when player didn't play it very well, this match-up is not a nightmare but it's a hard one.
Facing a 17 man capped tournament this saturday with open players list and known meta. I need to make some cuts in the sideboard reflected on the known meta. The decks next to eachother are owned by some person.
This is a good chance to pack some silver bullets, please advice
amulet titan
mardu/uw/jeskai
merfolk/arclight

Having quickly gone through the list here's what I'd go for at a first glance.
I've done a few things here:
1. I value Bloodbraid elf quite a bit for your expected meta, you have quite a few matchups where you need to turn the corner quick - a 3/2 haste that might bring a bolt or hate piece along with it is IMO one of the best ways of doing that. So I'd play all 4 copies. For the same reason I'd go to 25 lands - to prepare a bit extra for the control matchups this is the treetop village - which also helps in turning the corner quick.
2. I swapped a wooded foothills for a twilight mire to make scooze as good as he can be. I can see an argument to swap one of the forests to basic mountain, but it'll mostly come up against control or burn. Against control make sure to fetch up your red sources when you can and you should be fine. Hopefully you can draw some cliffs against burn, otherwise you need to put a priority on getting red in a painless way.
3. Confidant is great in the matches where you need to find your disruption fast (tron, scapeshift, goryos) - and one of the best cards against uw - so I upped the count to 4 and dropped the kalitas as I don't think you need him that bad against the expected meta. I dropped the 4th assassin's trophy to make room for the creature changes as well as the land changes - it is a good card, but not one I'd usually want to start with multiples of in my opening hand - akin to scooze, so 3 seems a better number IMO. I also went down to 2 fatal pushes in the main - which is the change I'm the least confidant about - I readded it to the sideboard as there's a few matches where it'll be great.
I like the surgicals against arclight, ad naus and goryos. I dropped nihil spellbomb as I don't think it does enough for the matches you listed, except goryos - I hope you can make due with scooze, fulminator and brutality here. I upped to all 4 fulminators, they seem great against titan, scapeshift, jeskai/uw, tron, ad naus - and can come in as fillers against burn for the thoughtseizes and confidants that you need to remove. I dropped to 1 anger as I'm hoping you won't need it for the creature aggro matchups and I only find it mediocre against phoenix where you also have 2 surgicals, 2 damping sphere as well as ishkanah and 1 fatal push in the board. I dropped the alpine moons as the fulminators + damping spheres should be enough disruption against lands I think.
I might have made a few more changes there, but not quite sure. Anyways - this is the list I ended up at looking at the expected meta and trying to hedge against that.
EDIT: I forgot to add - I'm not confident on the affinity/scales matchups with this list. So might need some shaving of some of the hate pieces to make room for some impactful stuff for that matchup. Not that you cannot beat it with this list, but I'd probably test this list against those decks and see if you need to do something about it or not. Also some guesses around whether you expect those decks to hit the top tables might be worth it.
I thought there would be way more activity on here since the banning. I'm not sure why people think it's a bad thing for Jund though? If someone can try and explain that to me? Affinity is a fine matchup if that rises again. We can tune to a heavier burn meta. Pulse of Murasa is a surprisingly playable card
And if we're expecting whir and affinity and hardened scales, Night of Souls' Betrayal looks really good, honestly. It's also good against dredge - makes the only relevant threats into 4 2/2's which is beatable. Against spirits it's nice, too. They have a lot of mopey creatures. Not great against humans, but not sure which I'm expecting more of right now between that and spirits as the disruptive aggro deck of the format
I've never been sold on Ishkanah. I'd rather play Pia and Kiran for a similar effect at a lower mana cost and a more relevant ability. People already bring in some grave hate against us
I honestly don't think Jund will be in a particularly good spot after KCI ban. I expect more Hardened Scales Affinity, Tron, Scapeshift and possibly Amulet Titan as well none of which is a good mu for Jund. To answer you, regarding Hardened Scales Afinity, it's a lot harder mu than classic Affinity. This is mostly because it's better against removal and that said I actually think that Jund (and other BGx decks) are Hardened Scales Affinity best mu's.

Pulse of Murasa is an "expensive" card CMC-wise for a matchup that gets done in a hurry. If we were worried about Burn, I think we should play more Collective Brutality and move on with life.
Night of Souls' Betrayal is great at stopping those decks' common mode of winning (via x/1's), but it doesn't win the game and can still be played around. I would rather play Kalitas to shut down the modular triggers instead (as well as Hangarback Walker's trigger). Even then, those decks can still outpace you fairly easily even when they're on the draw.
Is it still true that a jund has a 50/50 match up against most of the field?
I’m thinking about building a solid midrange deck and what to make an informed choice.
Appreciate your thoughts team.
I don't believe that's the case any longer. Tron, Scapeshift, Amulet, UW Control, and Lantern are all poised to be good now and all have positive matchups against Jund. Burn is still good and I believe that matchup slightly favors Burn. Affinity has morphed into a harder deck to beat with Hardened Scales. Jund has a positive matchupu against Storm, but that isn't overly prevalent right now. Humans and Spirits are probably 50/50 - Jund does well against creature decks but those 2 decks pack a lot of disruption on the bodies, which brings the matchups closer.
Decks that showed up. 2 hardend scales, ur phoenix, mono green land destruction (saffron olive brew), GreenTron, 8whack, ad naeseum, ponza, valakut, amulet titan, hollow one, gb elves, Grixis Deathshadow.
Opted for only 3 Liliana of the veil, no Liliana last hope. Mainboard kalitas, 4 Trophys and 1 Maelstrom Pulse.
Went 5-1, decklist below. Heavily tuned to the meta.
R1 UR Phoenix 2-0
It was a version with swiftspear.
His bloodmoon really hurt him more than it did me.
Grafdiggers cage won me the game. Strong sideboard card, I like it more than Spellbomb.
R2 MonoGreen ramp land destruction deck (some brew Saffron Olive came up with) 2-0
I think I sideboarded correctly, out my lilianas and a few BBE.
Game 1 he had ramp but no pay off, second game he had pay offs but no ramp. Discard and a clock won me the game.
R3 Grixis Deahtshadow 2-0
Game 2 Boarded in fulmages, E.E., huntmaster and the 4th BBE. Took out bolts and some inquisition, probably should have boarded out Kalitas. Wasnt sure to board out kcommand.
I blew up 2 waterygraves and a swamp with fulmage and Trophy and succesfully kept him off black mana and I had pressure, while he was diggin for a black land.
R4 GB Elves 0-2
I went down hard to azuri and the elf lord druid mage(?). Game 2 I had Night of Souls betrayal but his elf lord kept all his stuff alive and he just stalled with Azuri, blocking and regenarating with elves untill he had enough to Overun me while I was digging for removal for his elf lord or Azuri.
Wasnt sure about sideboarding. Boarded out my 3 Liliana, 2 BBE, 2 Thoughtseize, boarded in 2 brutality, E.E., Anger, Cage, NoSB, huntmaster.
Maybe I should have shaved some Bobs or Goyfs, not sure.
Top 4 was GB Elves, GDS, Amulet Titan, JUND’EM
Semi finals Amulet Titan 2-0
Game 1 I took his ramp snake and his other cards where lands and 1 Titan. He didnt draw any gas and I clocked him
Game 2 I won the game with Turn 3 Maelstrom Pulse his 2 Amulets! He didnt recover.
Finals GB Elves 2-1 ( previous opponent)
Time for revenge. This time I boarded out my 3 Lili, 2 BBE, 1 Bob, 1 Goyf, keeping my 2 Thoughtseize.
Bob plus double shaman of the pack lost me first game. Game 2 he mulled to 5 and I had gas. Kalitas felt very nice in this matchup, giving me life and Tokens and also when my opponent had Azuri and chumpblocker to regenarate I was still gaining life, helping me with the lifeloss from Bob. Game 3 my Bob was very nice to me, revealing only land the whole game. He made a blocking error with Azuri when I made an alpha strike. But I had the game anyways.
Sideboard 15
2 surgical
3 fulmiMage
2 Collective brutality
1 Anger of the gods
1 night of souls betrayel
1 huntmaster
1 grafdiggers cage
1 ishkanah
1 damping sphere
1 engineered explosives
1 bloodbraid elf
NoSB and Ishkanah were for testing. I didnt like NoSB, would have rather had another Anger vs Elves, maybe its better vs scales affinity instead of Anger, not sure. Only brought in Ishkanah vs ur phoenix, didnt see it, was to scared to board it in vs anything elves, all very fast decks, even Elves.
I really did not like Ishkahan and E.E. Both felt too slow or too loose. The maestrom pulse and kalitas mainboard where great. The 4th BBE, huntmaster and grafdiggers cage were MVPs alongside the fulmages ofcourse!
I really liked the 4 Throphys, felt like I wasnt going to lose to any crazy stuff, but it did felt awkward vs Elves as early removal, felt like a hard matchup in general, so maybe I need to pack more Anger in the sideboard and toy a little with Bolt and Fatal Push and Trophy in the sideboard and mainboard. I feel like I want 3 push, 4 bolt and 4 Throphy in my 75.
All in all im satisfied, need to work on a list now for next saturday, the Dutch Open Series, big tournamen 250+ players.
NoSB and Ishkanah were for testing. I didnt like NoSB, would have rather had another Anger vs Elves, maybe its better vs scales affinity instead of Anger, not sure.
Many GBx players are playing Languish these days. It's really good versus Spirits in particular as well as the other go-wide decks. It is often still Goyf-friendly as well.
I don't believe that's the case any longer. Tron, Scapeshift, Amulet, UW Control, and Lantern are all poised to be good now and all have positive matchups against Jund. Lantern is a bad matchup?? How??
Also, Tron is definitely 50/50.

Standard: lol no
Modern: BG/x, UR/x, Burn, Merfolk, Zoo, Storm
Legacy: Shardless BUG, Delver (BUG, RUG, Grixis), Landstill, Depths Combo, Merfolk
Vintage: Dark Times, BUG Fish, Merfolk
EDH: Teysa, Orzhov Scion / Krenko, Mob Boss / Stonebrow, Krosan Hero
Many GBx players are playing Languish these days. It's really good versus Spirits in particular as well as the other go-wide decks. It is often still Goyf-friendly as well.
