Truthfully, I really liked playing with only 3 BBE. Like I said, every time I saw Kalitas, it was great, and I think I would have felt worse about things a few times if it had been a BBE. I am going to be running back the same list again today in a few hours at a different store and I will try to take better notes so I can give better results round by round.
Thanks, much appreciated. I want to try a 3 BBE list, just not sure wich creature could replace here. Kalitas seems like an excellent (albeit a little slow) option for the kind of matchups I had trouble with, such as Kiki-chord, Huamns or Abzan counters (wich I think strategy-wise should be favourable to us).
I don't exactly know how you define lame here, but I understand it like this: If I pack some Spellbombs to bring in against Jund its pretty lame, but against Hollow One, Mardu and Storm they are really good. Against Grixis Shadow its okay to have.
And in my eyes Anger is not dedicated GY hate. If the 2 best decks in Modern are a deck heavily basing its gameplay on the GY (Hollow One) and a weenie deck, then I don't see a reason why e.g. Anger should not be really great here. Let alone for Humans, Anger might not be justified, because that type of deck is strategy-wise a good matchup for Jund. But Hollow One is a deck that is hard for us to beat, and I really don't think its smart not bothering with that matchup at all, because the other decks on the format don't use the GY that much.
Honestly I think a card like Spellbomb is far more applicable against the field than Ancient Grudge, which is a card that most people here insist being a 2-of. I would actually consider that card more lame against the field than Spellbomb.
You just said it yourself. It's against one deck. Storm, while it's good, isn't that popular. Even so, we're better against the deck post-sideboard than pre-sideboard regardless of configuration. If I'm seriously worried about Hollow One decks, you would cut the number of Bloodbraid Elves as our friend above has to play spells that just interact better (I specifically like Kalitas, Scavenging Ooze and Terminate but there are other spells that are good for this). I don't think Nihil Spellbomb is bad, but I also don't think it swings that match much.
Also, Anger of the Gods isn't really graveyard hate to me. I just think of it as a sweeper with upside.
Yeah its only one deck, and if we were talking about Living End being that one deck then I would totally agree, but we are speaking of Hollow One, the second best modern deck atm. Its the same thing like Tron. I honestly think, playing Fulminator is only to hedge against Tron at this point, since Control is gone atm. Its okay to just concede to that matchup if you want, but I think if its that present, you can't just ignore it. And I think the same goes for Hollow One right now.
Spellbomb might not be enough to win that matchup singlehandedly, but the other tools aren't either imo. I think the tools you described alongside Spellbomb is a good plan. Against Hollow One there is no single card winning the matchup anyway. But it doesn't mean we should not run any of those good, but not automatically winning, cards.
I don't mean that Nihil Spellbomb would be enough to win the match on its own. I'm saying that it just doesn't much of anything against that deck specifically, but can be decent overall in a metagame. The heavy-hitting action they bring down comes from their hand. The best you can do with Nihil Spellbomb is eat a few recurring creatures and prevent a delve threat from coming down on a particular turn. In all of that, you're still not advancing your board or finding a way to win. It also doesn't deal with super fast 4/4's either. I assume we're more concerned with the above average to busted draws, right? If that's the case, I don't see how focusing on their graveyard will ever beat Hollow One imo.

Well I think we cannot really focus on their faster draws or explosives draws, since I don't think we can really consistantly win in that case. Its the same like turn 3 natural tron into karn. But we know that most matches are actually playing out differently than dropping a bunch of Hollow Ones on turn 1. Our only chances in that case rely on Grudge or KCommand/Terminate. But I do think a delve creature hitting the BF on turn 2 is far more likely, which I personally am really happy to prevent with Spellbomb. I think exiling their first wave of cards in the GY can make cards like Ooze and Discard far more likely to be effective enough or give us more time to develop our board.
Unless I'm misunderstanding you, shouldn't our discard and removal already deal with those other scenarios.
If the GY is being filled with 2 recurring threats on turn 1 for example (say through looting) then our removal and discard does not deal with them in the long run. So I like to Spellbomb the GY in that case, then the Hollow One player has to either cast the next recurring creatures first or find another looting effect which is giving us time and makes us developing Ooze first and then we are able to remove the creatures alongisde exiling them for example. Something along those lines. What I want to say is when the board is being jammed with multiple recurring creatures early, our removal will not give us enough time to develope our board and get rid of all those creatures with Ooze + Removal, since its really slow. We would need Anger for that, which is a reason why I like Anger in that matchup.

They could force you to use the Spellbomb though. One way is to use landfall to get Bloodghast back or dropping a fatty precombat to make you eat Flamewake Phoenix. They could even delve the cards away and not care if you're just going to use Nihil Spellbomb to posture. There are so many possibilities. The point is most of them involve us being reactive instead of proactive while they continue throwing more crap at us. If I'm dead set on being reactive, then I want graveyard hate that's just going to work (Leyline of the Void). Otherwise, I think these other plans are about as protective as a safety blanket. You just need too much to go your way for Spellbomb to work against Hollow One. This isn't to say I'm totally in love with Leyline either. Watching people still be threatened with either one in play leaves me thinking that graveyard hate isn't that useful against them.
Well, I just got back from my modern tournament today. I feel really dumb. Friday when I posted my list, I forgot to put the deck back into my bag. So I showed up to the event and didn't realize I didn't have my deck with me until the start of round 1. So I had to default to Burn. Which ended up being bad because I didn't check my sideboard and was missing 3 of my SB cards. So, all in all, I feel like an idiot today, and went 1-3. Go me
Top 16 decklists are posted which includes jadine at 16th. Most notable features are lili the last hope in the side and not the main, and only 3 bobs! An interesting take for sure.
The sideboard is a bit weird but it’s obviously very crafted to beat hollow one with 2 baloths, 2 cages, and 2 spellbombs. Thoughts?

Reporting back after GP Hartford. I finished 10-5 which I am very happy with - my personal goal was to make day 2. The list felt solid, the only time I missed Bloodbraid Elf was when I was in top deck wars against Grixis Shadow and Blue Moon. Otherwise, Goblin Rabblemaster was an absolute all-star for me along with the overall lower curve.
I'll leave a list of my match results below. I need to take some time to make a write up for each round.
R1 Hollow One L 0-2 (0-1)
R2 UB Mill W 2-0 (1-1)
R3 Burn W 2-1 (2-1)
R4 Bogles L 0-2 (2-2)
R5 Grixis Shadow W 2-0 (3-2)
R6 Storm W 2-1 (4-2)
R7 Eldrazi Tron W 2-1 (5-2)
R8 Affinity W 2-0 (6-2)
R9 Humans W 2-1 (7-2)
R10 UW Control W 2-0 (8-2)
R11 Affinity L 0-2 (8-3)
R12 Grixis Shadow L 1-2 (8-4)
R13 Blue Moon W 2-1 (9-4)
R14 Naya Vizier L 1-2 (9-5)
R15 Jeskai Saheeli W 2-0 (10-5)
Outside of the Bogles match it did not feel like I was completely out of any match. And as I mentioned before the only time I wish I had the elf in my deck was when I got to a point of both players top decking. Even then, I was able to top deck better than my opponents most of the time. Goblin Rabblemaster was an awesome top deck in these situations and it usually closed the game out when it happened. Grim Lavamancer and Scavenging Ooze also did well for me throughout the weekend.
Cards that seemed to under perform for me were Liliana the Last Hope, Abrupt Decay, and Anger of the Gods. This might've just been that their utility didn't come up that often in my particular matches so I'm not sure.
Of the 20 Jund lists that made day 2 it seemed that most, if not all, of them ran Bloodbraid Elf (including Reid Duke and Jadine Klomparens). I am sure that if these players are still jamming 4 Elf in the deck that it's most likely the correct move but I will say that it can also be done without it. Jund is always about how you build it to challenge the field and I felt I was able to compete with the 75 I brought.
Thanks for reading and let me know what you all think.

First of all, congratulations on your day 2! I'd also feel good with that record, myself
The lower curve does help. I agree that Liliana, the Last Hope usually underperforms and that's why my singleton resides in the sideboard. I don't feel she justifies another 3 drop in the main board.
I do disagree on the abrupt decay take. My comments are based on personal preference, of course, but many Boggles matches are won through favorable trades using abrupt decay as the game changer. It is also nice to have it vs. young pyro mancer based control decks. Of course, in many matches it is sideboarded out...
As a personal note, this week I'll try a list with 3 BBEs, 14 one drops and only 6 three drops as an attempt to improve my game vs. Humans and Hollow one. I feel that my cascades could get totally irrelevant, so I'd really like to have your take on your mana curve (other than not running 4 drops at all, that is).
A small writeup of my experience from this weekend.
The MKM trial ended up being a small 17 person tournament - many of which play at my local area. I went 3-2 for a 6th place finish and lost my match in the top 8 to the same unstorm deck as I lost to in the swiss (I had no idea how to attack that matchup and suspect my card evaluation was completely off with my discard spells).
Round 1 Vs Grixis Shadow (one of the locals from my area) 2-0
I feel like our deck is just built to smash this deck to pieces barring crazy openings. Both decks remove threats all the time and eventually man lands take over. A liliana that hits the battlefield is often lights out for the Shadow player. It does require some timely topdecks - but overall this is not the hardest matchup most of the time I feel.
Round 2 Vs Grishoalbrand 2-1
I actually don't like this matchup that much, I feel like we have decent disruption but our clock is too slow. I got locked out by a turn 2 Bloodmoon G2 - but other than that I felt like I won more on behalf of his deck failing him than anything I actually did.
Round 3 Vs Unstorm 0-2
I had no real idea of how his deck played out. It was more or less Pyromancer's Ascension, Vision from Beyond, Thought Scour, Serum Visions and Manamorphose + Noxious Revival and Bolts. Although I stuck with the previously posted list - I never managed to find removal for the Ascension and this just meant I stood no chance. I think I made some mistakes in discarding his Revivals, which I feel is often good against Storm, but here I think the card disadvantage would've hurt him more and that could've made a difference.
Round 4 Vs Humans 0-2
This is a matchup I feel like my list should do fine against - but a mull to 5 G1 lost me Game 1 (which tbh I was close to winning due to him having a very mediocre draw.). Game 2 I kept a decent 7 with 2 lands. I missed my 3rd land drop with 3 and 4 drops in my hand and that ended up costing me the game.
Round 5 Vs Eldrazi Tron 2-1
I was more or less certain this would be a win and in for T8. I knew he was on E-tron and I did not feel good going into this match. I got smashed G1. Game 2 I inqusition and take his ballista. He was stuck with some slow (not temple and no T3 tron) lands + TKS and other 4+ drops. I stick confidant T2, he makes second land drop and passed the turn. Bob reveals Fulminator mage and he concedes the game.
Game 3 was wild and I got insanely lucky. The game comes to a halt with him having an Endbringer with Collar on it vs. my board of Goyf, BBE and a Liliana that is at 1 loyalty during my turn. He keeps drawing a card and pinging liliana - while I topdeck dead cards and he finds only lands. this happens for 2+ turns until I topdeck a decay and decay the collar. He pings down liliana completely at this point and then I topdeck the 4th liliana. And start swinging (life totals were 5 to 24 or so). Opponent keeps bricking finding only lands and I win the game. I think he got close to 10 land draws in a row. There were definitely some lines he could've taken that would've played around that - but then again who expects that many lands on the top of the deck.
All in all the deck did what it was supposed to. I'm also beginning to wonder if all 4 BBEs are where we want to be. It is an absolute allstar against control and other midrange decks, but it really is quite slow against quite a bit of the field. I'm toying around with an idea of running 2 BBEs main and then having some other 4 drops in the board. But haven't found a configuration I feel would be solid yet.
I'm at a bit of a struggle wrt which spells to run main. I feel like the 2nd decay is doing good catching all sort of random stuff (which is something I feel has always been this decks strength, that we can have good matchup against random niche decks). Given the popularity of Hollow One, Mardu Pyromancer and the likes putting down high CMC threats I also find myself missing the 3rd terminate from previous lists. I'll tinker around some more with some ideas. I'd say the current lists most of us have been running would be very good in a control/midrange meta, but it just doesn't feel like this is where the meta is settling in on.
So maybe play 3 copies of BBE and add a low cost threat like Grim Lavamancer to the main. Would free up a SB slot which could be used to potentially run a card like Kalitas, which seems really good against Humans and Hollow One alike.
I would even cut another BBE, adding a second K-Command or moving LtLH to the mainboard. Keeps the grindy element of the deck, lowers the curve and makes your openers less awkward.
