Affinity will surely board out galavanic blast because it super-crappy against midrange.
They rather tend to strip Cards with Thoughtseize, especially public enemy no 1, stony silence.
3-1 tonight in a field of 25, deck as listed above.
0-2 vs. RG Tron: (0-1)
Processors needs fast ramp and disruption--both--to win here, and I didn't get either; Ghost Quarter is most emphatically NOT enough, without a clock to back it up.
2-0 vs. Loam Pox: (1-1)
My opponent's grindy deck did not apply enough pressure and I had two easy wins, though G2 went many, many turns while I topdecked in vain looking for any of my Relics to shut off his Dredge shenanigans. Soren plus Lingering Souls were a major win-con in G1.
2-0 vs. Boros Burn: (2-1)
My opponent mulled to 5 in G1 and I was able to out-race him with Seer and Smasher. In G2, Timely Reinforcements plus Blessed Alliance bought me the time I needed. Eidolon of the Great Revel is not too good against Processors; most of our builds run at least 8 major late-game threats that come in at CMC 4+. Monastery Swiftspear is always the threat I remove first in this match.
2-0 vs, Merfolk: (3-1)
This fella borrowed his deck tonight and may have misplayed--my experience against Fish has been that I mostly lose. However, in G1 my one-of maindeck Anguished Unmaking hit his Aether Vial before it could gain him any value, and then he proceeded to draw lands. In G2 Sorin plus Lingering Souls enabled me to out-race him for the win. Using Blessed Alliance to untap two Sorin-pumped Spirit tokens, for +4 lifegain and killing a Master of Waves to boot, proved a decisive play in the late game.
Thoughts: I want Damnation back; Languish is pretty bad vs. Bant Eldrazi (which I played some side games against during my downtime tonight). Maybe a 1/1 split here, if Bant or Esper Spirits becomes a player in my meta, since Selfless Spirit is just too good against Wrath effects.
The Burn matchup seems adequately covered by a mix of Blessed Alliance and Collective Brutality main and side; I no longer feel the need for Rest for the Weary in the sideboard. However time will tell if this is sustainable. Right now I have too few matches under my belt to feel sure. Timely Reinforcements stays as a one-of in the SB for miscellaneous Burn and Aggro matches.
I went 3-1 too, not sure the size of the field but >30.
R1 Seb on Naya Burn 2-1
Seb's first time playing burn.
G1 Seb mulled to 6 can kept a land heavy hand. Some swiftspears came down along with lave spikes, swiftspear got pathed. Dropped a strangler and processed a suspended rift bolt.
G2 4 eidolons in row meant removal was gonna cost me a lot of life. Dropped a TKS and smasher. Was already at 2 life at this stage. All I could do was sit there against the 2 remaining eidolons. He eventually drew some burn, swung in with the eidolons which I was forced to block and burned me.
G3 Removal with 2 smashers is good.
1-0
R2 Auric on RG ponza
I hadn't faced ponza in a while so my SB had been adjusted accordingly which meant my crucible of worlds and sacred ground had been taken out.
G1 He's on the play, T3 blood moon. I've got no access to basics/colourless mana.
G2 T1 thoughtseize a Baloth, T2 thoughtseize a thrun, he's still got an inferno titan in hand. T3 draw and play a souls. Grind it out a bit, disenchant a utopia sprawl as was trying to beat down fast. He drops titan, wipes be spirits. Plays another baloth. Bolts and pings my TKS with titan attack triggers.
1-1
R3 Jerry on Jund
Games were long and I don't remember specifics.
G1 I win with souls I think
G2 He wins with scooze and raging ravine at 3 life.
G3 Smash face with smashers and souls.
MD eternal scourge was nice for this match up. Allows chump blocks if you have a relic of progenitus out till you draw into something more substantial. I like scourge for grindy games. Lost of spot removal is nice. Ooze can be a problem if you don't have relic or it's gone to late game and opp. has lots of green mana. My opp was very confused by my deck having never seen it before.
2-1
Kev on BUG ponza
yay more blood mooons. . .
G1 lose to blood moon.
G2 he's got bolts, snaps, blood moons, stone rains but I manage to ekk out a win at 3 life with TKS and soul beats.
G3 I have multiple paths, a scourge some nonbasics and a plains in hand. Don't play the plains till T5 skipping my T4 land drop which was the right play since he stone rains the turn before I play the plains. I drop scourge, path it when he drops a blood moon and grab a wastes allowing me play my colourless eldrazi and just beat down from there.
This match up although it packs a lot of more powerful cards seems easier than the GR versions as it's a lot slower. That being said you can just get hosed by a T3 blood moon. Silly card.
Final: 3-1
Have you considered running fulminator in the side at all? It's good against tron and valakut decks, bringing in one to slow down an early temple by bant eldrazi can help a matchup that is definitely in their favor due to ancient stirrings and nobles, and if you've got the room to board them in its good against infect as well. Except infect I'd say all those matchups are slightly favored to favored for the opponent, so it might be good to shore them up. I run into titanbreach, bant eldrazi, and infect quite a bit in 2-0 and 3-0 rounds at FNM (best and most consistent players are piloting those decks), so I'm trying two fulms in the side. Ive been trying to hone in my sideboard/flex slots in the main board for my local meta and I always find it hard because there's usually one or two cards that I'd like in the 75 but can't quite fit them in (right now I can't get a 2nd Co. Brut. Or 2nd anguished in the 75).
I like your take on 3 Thoughtseize and 1 co. brut. in the main, that definitely helped me trim a slot. I'm also thinking of running 4 reshaper and 3 strangler, because it feels really good to drop a T2 reshaper and I love how people seem to path it all the time. I am wary about the change as strangler is the only processor so trimming it might make relics less important.
Do you rely on it for fixing? Seems like you have a lot of B/W sources and it may be unnecessary. I don't know though; never played with it. Just looks strange as a one-of.
Have you considered running fulminator in the side at all? ... I'm trying two fulms in the side. I haven't tried Fulminator Mage in this deck, though I've had success with it in other BW Midrange-type builds. I like that it doesn't mess with our own mana development the way GQ does, but I've had trouble getting BB early-on many times before. I agree that Tron, most Valakut builds (though not so much the classic RUG Scapeshift variant) and Bant Eldrazi are all unfavorable matches, but I also think that all three are not absolutely terrible. Infect is pretty easy most of the time. I dunno. Like you, I wish I had about two more slots than I actually do have, in a 75 card deck.
Please report back with your experiences using Fulmie after you have some time to test it, I'm curious to hear your results.
Really digging this deck and it will be a deck I'm going to play in future Modern tournaments. This is currently the list I'm playing, inspired by deaddrift's list:
Hey thanks for the compliment! Beware of Sculler's greedy mana needs though, you might find it hard to land regularly on T2 without getting away from Ghost Quarter and/or Vault of the Archangel. Good luck, it's a lot of fun!
I have an informal play report from Friday, 3-2 out of 32 players, deck as listed here. Sadly my notes are all messed up, so no details this time. I beat UR Prowess, Boros Burn, and a GW Enchantment Prison deck, and lost to Mono-G Stompy and Dredge. Sorin was clutch for me many times and I can't believe I ever tried the deck without him.
The loss to Stompy was partly variance--though fast aggro can be quite tough, especially the mono-color builds--but the loss to Dredge was just sad. That deck is busted wide open; in G2 I resolved a T1 Relic and then a T2 Relic, but they did nothing for me in the face of his Ancient Grudge and Abrupt Decay. Maybe more matches will prove the matchup to be closer, but this one was a blowout. I hadn't played the Dredge deck since the addition of Cathartic Reunion before this. Makes me want Leyline of the Void real bad, and I own three, but I don't think I'll be trying them out just yet unless I see more players running it. Declaration in Stone did not make an appearance for me in G2, which was over real fast.
Relic of Progenitus felt useless quite a lot of times (even it's cantrip didn't outweight this) and the Discard-package has also been far from being perfect. I changed teh whole build and it felt much smoother. I wanted the deck to be more proactive and cutted the Inquisition / Thoughtseize entirely.
A playset Tidehollow Sculler came in.
It's by far teh worst Card in teh Deck (no doubt here), but it's much more proactive tehn IoK (which pops up in a lot of useless scenarios).
It enables Wasteland Strangler, which is fine too.
Next step i decided to cut Relic of Progenitus entirely.
My reason is, that it's ok'ish, but not great overall. Especially since Strangler is a 3- to 4-of and the only Processor left, i had no doubt in dropping Relic.
I instead opted to go more Creature-heavy. I found a 1-Drop that cantrips, can never be 1-for-1'ed and is able to chumpblock. Thraben Inspector fits teh bill.
Long speech, here's my (local Meta specialized) Variant of BW Eldrazi:
tidehollow sculler being a 2/2 can be quite relevant. It can trade with a lot more creatures than a brain maggot can. Ex: goblin guide. Now I know the purpose of the 'sculler isn't to trade but after you've processed the exiled spell you're left with a far better body on the 'field with 'sculler compared to the maggot.
I was just considering Maggot but decided not to for the same reasons. Ultimately I'm shelving Sculler for now, the mana requirement is a pain and I only played 2 copies. There's a reason the Taxes version plays vials. I'm going back to trying Matter Reshaper, I figure between TKS, Inquisition/TS, and Collective Brutality we have enough hand disruption.
