So after looking through the primer, I decided to make a budget list for this deck that I can upgrade later on. I'm in an "Unknown Meta" situation, so thre list is probably a little clunky. I do a few of the decks that are present, and I'll get to those later
I know very little about my meta. I've played a few games casually against Anafenza's Company, and as far as I can tell it's not running anything out of the ordinary. Soul Sisters is also running around, but I don't know if this is the typical mono white list or one of the BW variants that crop up every now an then. The deck I'm afraid of is a local Jund deck dubbed "Mono Black Jund." It's a VERY heavy black Jund deck that relies on Liliana and Phyrexian Obliterator (!) to close out games. In fact, I'm considering biting the bullet and cutting Doom Blade for Dismember for additional ways to deal with this deck mainboard! (Would you rather take 4 life or sac 5 permanents?) It appears to run the typical Jund burn and disruption packages, so nothing weird there. My meta is very small (We've failed to fire multiple times.) and in a 3-4 round tournament, I know I will have to go up against this deck. That's where secret sideboard tech comes in! (TA-DAA!) Once I can afford it, Runed Halo s going in the board so I can deal with said Jund deck post board. However, I don't know how I should setup my sideboard from here because I don't know my meta! I've never played in the Modern tournament, I've just jammed some games casually between rounds in a draft with a Goblins list. Any help is greatly appreciated!

My version of this deck started out as a budget version, but I have been slowly adding cards once I find good deals. When I finally got my hands on a playset of Dark Confidants it was a HUGE upgrade for the deck. There are a few versions of this deck and the only difference is if you are primarily black or white for your finishers. The white version of this deck will use either kitchen finks or blade splicer with restoration angel. I think that people have started to move away from hero of bladehold and Brimaz, King of Oreskos but I am not entirely sure why. The current iteration of the more black heavy version uses abyssal persecutor as a finisher. Abyssal persecutor is a huge creature and can close games very fast, but you need to be able to kill him to win. To do that, all of our kill spells are able to target him (no doom blade) and we use Miren, the Moaning Well to get rid of him against control decks and grafted wargear to make him or any other creature in our deck a big threat. The 0 equip cost of grafted wargear is huge.
I have a few runed halos and the card is just too narrow. Decent modern decks have more than one way to kill you and the card doesn't pose a threat. Every time that I cast the card I just felt that I was just delaying my unavoidable death. If you are worried about beating jund, Lilliana is horrible against lingering souls. I would just add a few grafted wargears to make your souls huge and get a Vault of the Archangel to kill phyrexian obliterator with minimal damage. Utter end is a cheap card that can take care of lilliana, obliterator, or phyrexian arena.
That's really neat actually. Abyssal Prosecutor seem like a reasonable win con. Because I can't afford Bob, I might keep Brimaz in because he blocks really efficiently and can win the game easy. Mu only concern with Prosecutor is that such a win con seems easy to disrupt, and if I can't find a sac outlet he kind of screws me over. I'll edit my list so accomedate him though. On a side note, the primer should be updated to include him. He's not mentioned anywhere.

I agree that Runed Halo is too narrow to be effective. It mentions in the first post of this Forum it's an OK call for an unknown meta, but you will want to be more tailored once you're sure what you're up against.
Doom Blade is not good in Modern, in my experience. Way too many black critters out there. Murderous Cut is a possibility if you're not running Bob, or Go for the Throat or even Victim of Night if you are. I wouldn't go a full 4-of on MC, though, that would be too much delving. I think Dismember is probably a good call, but not if you decide to run Abyssal Persecutor because then you want all your removal to work on him as well.
I would also consider Sign in Blood over Night's Whisper because every so often it will give you the reach you need to close out a game.
Good luck! Let us know how you do.
[EDIT] Looks like we overlapped. Abyssal Persecutor is a new feature which is why he isn't in the primer. You do need ways to get rid of him. Miren, the Moaning Well is very good for this and costs $7-8. Use late game disruption spells to clear counterspells out of your way if you are casting a spell to get rid of him.
Watch out for needing WW for a T3 Brimaz and BB for a T4 Percy. Getting both can be pretty rare and/or life-draining.
The issue with mana fixing is that I have no idea how much I need. Cutting Brimaz does actually bring the deck down a lot. Alright, I'll rework the deck and have a list up tomorrow.

So I just finshed 1st again in a 18 person modern event. With the deck that I posted above (minus the 2 jotun grunts since they haven't arrived in the mail yet, I ran vampire nighthawk instead) I have won 2 out of the 3 modern events that I have been in. Here is a report:
Match 1: UW control (2-0). This game was just a horrible match up for him, I was able to 1 for 1 each of his threats while I posed enough of a threat while not over extending myself.
Match 2: Naya burn (2-0). His deck consisted of experiment one, scavenging ooze, ghor-clan rampager, and burn.
Game 1 was close but he just flooded out and I was able to gain life with Sorin, Solemn Visitor.
Game 2 was really, really close. He had me down to 2 life but I was able to come back thanks to Vault of the Archangel and sorin. I then was able get him to negative life with percy out, kor firewalker out equipped with a grafted wargear. It came down to me top decking a kill spell or another creature, this went on for two turns where I finally drew a mutavault and killed percy with grafted wargear.
Match 3: Grixis Twin (2-0). These were the most exciting and tense matches of the night. I was ahead the whole time during both games, but he kept drawing relevant cards that kept him alive.
Game 1, I was really afraid of him comboing off, but I had enough hand disruption and kill spells that I kept him under control.
Game 2, I feel like our twin matchup should be pretty good, I only sided in a Memoricide. Grixis twin players usually side out splinter twin and try to go for the beat down with tasigur, the golden fang in game 2. This is exactly what he did. This game was probably the most exciting game that I played all night. He was able to survive 3 full casting of lingering souls, killed my pack rat with some snapcaster mage shenanigans. But I was able to kill him eventually.
Match 4: abzan company (2-0).
Game 1, The first match I think that I got lucky. He cast collected company twice (going 12 cards deep after turn 10 or so) and still was not able to find his combo. I was able to kill him with percy and then pathed it. Vault of the Archangel was a standout in this game.
Game 2, The second match I was able to get rest in peace out on turn 2, which pretty much won me the game. It was still really close, I was down to 2 life but sorin came in to save the day.
Overall, I am happy with this current iteration of the deck.
Alright I made some changes to my list. I cut Brimaz, Hero of Bladehold, one Castigate, one Pack rat, and one Tidehollow Sculler and added an Abyssal Persecutor package and two Sorin
My bdget can't really accomodate for cutting the Caves right now. I do own one Mutavault, and I'll throw it in once I get another and an Urborg. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Maybe go with Go for the Throat/Victim of Night here. Victim is better but the BB makes it harder to cast. Other than that your list looks really tight. Since you have not so much happening at 3 CMC you might have room for Phyrexian Arena although if you have to buy it maybe just save up for Bob instead.

Awesome! 8-0 for the night is outstanding. Nicely done!
Curious about Wargear: How often do you get 2-for-1'ed when the artifact is shot out from under your critters?
how about wall of omens as a dark confidant? good? bad? its both card advantage. u get value right away on wall of omens. if dark confidant eats a removal u lost the card value.
Dark Confidant is the absolute best card draw engine. Absolute, irreplaceable, I'd rather save for him than Mutavauls (you don't need them, personally I don't play them) or even fetchlands.
In the meanwhile Night's Whisper is better than Sign in Blood or Wall of Omens.
Sorry about the double post of my list. The page screwed up and I had to shut down my internet connection, and I couldn't find the post anywhere, so I retyped it again, thus the difference of wording. I actully had to do this three times. I'm gonna replace Dismember with Go for the throat (Thanks for pointing out the fact that Dismember does'nt actually kill Percy. You would think being rippedripped limb from limb would kill just about anythung, but not a giant demon, apparently.) Now what should I sideboard for an unknown meta?

Curious about Wargear: How often do you get 2-for-1'ed when the artifact is shot out from under your critters?
How key is Sorin's lifegain to your success?
When I play wargear, I usually put it on a soul from lingering souls or a creature that I want to die. I usually don't put it on creatures that I want to stick around for a while until I have seen their hand or know what type of deck I am playing against. So far I haven't been 2-for-1'ed, but it is bound to happen one of these days.
Sorin is amazing. He is the card that pushes you over the top when there is a stalled board state and will get you out of a rut if you are about to die. He is only good when you have a creature on the board or if the opponent doesn't have any creatures. Then you can -2 him and swing for a 6 point life swing next turn. He is really at his best when you cast lingering souls. Having two to four 2/1 flyers with lifelink can kill almost all of the creatures in the format. People usually underestimate him and I have ultimated him about 30% of the time when he hits the board. That is game over against creature based decks.
In the meanwhile Night's Whisper is better than Sign in Blood or Wall of Omens.
Hi Sirius_B, why do you say that? I value your perspective on this deck and I would like it if you explained this. Is it the BB casting cost needed for T2? Because otherwise Sign in Blood seems better than Night's Whisper, to me.
I usually don't put it on creatures that I want to stick around for a while until I have seen their hand or know what type of deck I am playing against. So far I haven't been 2-for-1'ed, but it is bound to happen one of these days.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, I appreciate it. it'll be interesting to hear how Jötun Grunt plays for you.
I agree with your sideboard list, which is unsurprising, since it's almost exactly what I am running right now. I am thinking of losing 2 Damnation and 1 Stony Silence to add 3 Kor Firewalker.
Yes, it's because of the mana cost. Even though we're a mostly black deck the possibility of having BW turn 2 comes up much more often than the possibility to win the game by targeting the opponent with Sign in Blood. Specially for someone who's using Painlands and 2 colorless lands.
Went 1-2 in a field of 33 tonight, first round I had a bye. List as posted before -1 Sculler -1 Victim of Night +2 Grafted Wargear.
Match 2 (the first one I played in) vs. Burn 1-2. In game 1 a T2 Rat somehow stuck after he had cast Eidolon of the Great Revel. Being able to do stuff without casting any spells was quite handy. In game 2 + 3 it was all Goblin Guide T1 and then burn to the face. I hate Burn. Kor Firewalker here I come.
Match 3 vs. BW Midrange 2-0 I beat a high school kid running a budget version of what we're trying to do here. He had Obzedat, Gurmag Angler, and Resto but I had too much removal. In game 1 Rat closed it very early, game 2 went to Percy.
Match 4 vs. Mono-U Tron. In game 1 he had the nuts draw, Tron in his opener plus draw plus Wurmcoil. In this game he got all four Wurmcoil Engines on the battlefield. I kept my opener which had 3x Lingering Souls in it and ended up drawing #4 but needless to say they are no match for Wurmcoils. Game 2 I Thoughtseized hie Expedition Map (the ONLY disruption I drew against him in the match!), Fulminator'ed his Tower, and Pack Rat'ed for the win. Game 3 he drew ALL the counterspells. Bob got me down to 7 life before I could kill him off myself, and then my opponent hit me once for 6 with Wurmcoil. I Pathed it but not in time; a few turns later he Ugin bolted me for the win.
I have had a lot of success with Pack Rat on T2. Using IoK or TS to clear the way is very good. Jötun Grunt only made it on the table once, lasting 2 turns, but I hardly saw him in hand all night.
I did not see Grafted Wargear in my hand at all except for drawing one once, right before a stack of 5/5 Rats was gonna alpha strike anyway. So no play report there.
It was a different Blue Tron player than I played last week and I've seen at least two others at the tables. My meta is telling me something, and it is to run Tron and Burn hate. I want to main deck 2 Ghost Quarter but can't really see running more than 5 colorless lands, even with 2 Urborgs and a full fetch and shock package. I might try ditching the Vault snd a Plains maybe? Or maybe Miren/Plains? Or Miren/Vault.
3x Firewalker will be replacing both Damnations and one Stony Silence in the side.
GQ, Vault, and Miren all seem like corner cases pretty much as far as I can tell. Anyway something's gotta go in the land package, and Mutavault is absolute money with Rat. Ideas with explanations please?
Also still looking for feedback and experiences on the Merfolk match. Am I the only one here playing against that deck?

3 Relic of Progenitus
2 Disenchant
1 Stony Silence
4 Kor Firewalker
3 Fulminator Mage
