There is one card I don't see enough of in this deck imo...
Even if it means pulling the second Tectonic Edge, I think Moorland Haunt is great in this deck in the mirror, against affinity, and to put a faster clock potentially on tron...
I love this card in UWR and it has won me quite a few games...
Thanks for the quick advice. The points you made definitely make sense.
From what you said these are the changes I've made to my list above.
-1 Plains
-1 Mountain
-1 Mana Leak
+1 Sulfur Falls
+1 Tectonic Edge
+1 Path to Exile
With those changes I really like the way the deck is set up. So with the Spell Snare if anything, I will probably just remove it. I was debating going down to 2 Electrolyze to add a second Spell Snare, but Electrolyze seems really good against Aggro plus you draw a card. Is there any card good enough to be in here as just a 1 of?
From what you mentioned about sideboard options, this is what I've come up with.
2 Supreme Verdict (Geist seems a lot more scarier than an opposing Thrun, thanks to the new legendary rule.)
2 Counterflux (mandatory seems sweet against any control/combo deck)
3 Wear/Tear (like the Versatility of also being able to destroy enchantments. Great synergy with Snapcaster Mage. Don't like Stony Silence b/c it's an enchantment and can easily be destroyed.)
3 Rest in Peace (I have a lot of experience with this card in Standard, so I know how to play with it. Although it being an enchantment sort of scares me. )
The rest of the sideboard will be put together as I figure out my local meta and get more comfortable with the format. Thanks again Rhinne!
The matchups where you would board in Stony Silence don't generally have ways to destroy it. Just look at Affinity, Tron, and even rogue artifact based decklists; they just don't run anything to deal with it.

Well, to be fair, tron should run naturalize-like effects, and that seems to be true most of the time.
So while they have a way to deal with it, silence will stop them from assembling tron for at least 2-3 turns, more than enough time for geist to do his thing.
I've been following this thread for a month now. I think it grew on me. And now, I wanna build this deck. Problem is, I got nothin' =[
I feel for ya man. The deck is super fun to play but it does cost a hella lot to build. I got my pieces over time through trades and good ebay deals, but I still shelled out more than I would have liked. You can take steps to lower the cost. Forgoing a full 8 fetches for your manabase, or skipping out on cliques or cryptics can help. But the core of 4 Geist and 4 Snapcaster is pretty much required.

I tried out Stony Silence as Soul Sisters, and RG Tron (on the draw) found the Tron through a Turn 3 Stony Silence too often. RG Tron (on the draw) did have a considerably harder time assembling the Tron through a Turn 2 Stony, though.
What Stony Silence actually did was shoot out RG Tron's consistency afterwards. It has a harder time casting Nature's Claim/Pyroclasm/Sylvan Scrying/Ancient Stirrings, Oblivion Stone doesn't work, it can't crack cantrip eggs, and once you handle the first Karn/Wurmcoil, you're well on your way to victory. Karn and All Is Dust being able to eat Stony does hurt, though.
I have just read the first and last page, if the answer is somewhere between, I'm sorry:
Is this deck still as highly competitive as pointed out in the primer? It doesn't seem to get a lot of play, why is that?
because pod had a good match up against it prior to voice, and after voice, the matchup is even more lopsided. I kind of want to revisit some Sword of Feast and Famine + Delver variant.

My friend advised me to grab the Snapcasters and Geists first. AFTER rotation. So I can buy them at lower prices. The other cards, can be acquired slowly, over time.
But with that in mind, I'm worried what THEROS will bring to Modern when it comes out.

Need a break from Standard or EDH? Play Two-Headed Giant, 60-Card Singleton!
IMO I think both Snapcaster Mage and Geist of Saint Traft are going to be increasing after rotation. Sure right after rotation they might dip down a few dollars but after a few months they will be more than they ever have. It's happened to so many cards that see play in multiple formats. Demand for these cards are high and they stop being printed increasing the price.
You can always play two wraths of god/verdicts in the side. A playset of paths should help too, and correct timing with bolts and snapcasters blocking tends to be more than enough to deal with 4 toughness guys.
turn 2 smiter can't be leaked, from that moment if I dont find a path soon, my geist becomes a Flame Javelin
I can bolt ooze if played in early, but in mid/late game he can simply respond by using the ability getting +1 counters and life
Thrun does not attack, he use it in defense while waiting for sigarda or other cows
I think the problem is not Thrun but Sigarda since she flies. I suggest you play bombs post board. Cards like Baneslayer Angel and Batterskull will give them a headache. Also playing a few wraths and Ajani V helps too. Also, you might want to make sure you have at least 3 copies of Electrolyze. Electrolyze + bolt/helix is one of the ways not to 2 for 1 yourself when killing a creature with 4 toughness.

Yes, your friends's deck is made to beat WUR since it's bolt resistant, has Thrun, Sigarda... a few Wraths and Batterskulls post board and he will easily fold.
Also, since he optimized his deck to beat midrange strategies like yours, it will be horribly beaten by almost any combo-type, make him play against some UR Storm and see if he stops playing the deck
Hi guys, I'm writing this on my phone so I won't be too detailed and apologise for any errors. I went to a local modern tournament with UWR Geist last night. There were about 30 contestants. This is the list I took;
I was missing Cliques and had to put together a somewhat make-shift sideboard.
Round 1: Was vs. BUG Delver. List ran DRS, Goyf, Bob, Clique, Liliana, TS etc.
Game 1: I was on the draw. He led with Crack, Shock, TS. Can't remember too many details other than that he took Geist. Game was long with us both spending a ton of resources. He was on 2 life for about 6 turns while we were both in top deck mode. His Goyf beat me to death as I flooded out.
Game 2: +1 Wrath of God, +1 Supreme Verdict, +1 Elspeth. -1 Sphinx's Rev, -2 Mana Leak. Game 2 I led with colonnade. He repeated his G1T1 play, again taking Geist. He seemed to halt me really well, and gained the upper hand after Vendilion Clique took Elspeth. Verdict brought the game back on terms, but his Tar Pit loomed deadly. Again he was on 2 as Tar Pit brought me to 4. With me on 1 next turn, and with 4 previous dead draws (my single mana leak and lands) I though it was going to be the same as before. Top deck Bolt, cast, his response double mana leak, pay through it ... Game 3!
Game 3: -1 Mana Leak, +1 Electrolyze. This game was his T1 DRS, my T1 Collonade, I was scared of Liliana at this point! He played island, beat me for one and passed. The next couple of turns were Liliana, Remand, Liliana, Remand, Liliana, Cryptic. I'm so far ahead now that it was GG. Burnt and pathed everything and killed with Collonade.
Round 2: Junk Pod vs one of the slowest players in existence (he has a reputation).
Game 1: I kept his board empty with Electrolyze and Bolts while Geist + an eventual Elspeth took him out.
Game 2: -1 Sphinx's Rev, -1 Ajani Vengeant, -1 Mana Leak, +3 Sweepers (I traded for Mindcensors post tournament.) I mulled to 5 keeping a hand of 2 Geist, two land and a helix. Begin the slowest plays in history. After far too long he was on 5 life with Finks with a -1 on it, viscera seer, ranger of eos and pod in hand. In response to pod I electrolysed finks and seer. He podded ranger into archangel and I couldn't get through. He overwhelmed me ... Slowly.
Game 3: Mulligan to 5 in a similar fashion. Was chasing a second PtE, a sweeper or a Snapcaster all game, or a counter! Drew all my geists and lost to infinite combo in t4 of time on. Was annoying coz I feel as though that matchup was very favourable. Not to mention he did things like SB out artifact hate, which would have cleared the way for torpor orb etc, and he he told me that he held off on DRS into T2 pod coz he didn't want to use the life against me!?
Round 3: Affinity. Stock standard list.
Game 1: I had stuff, she had 12 damage on t2. Game 2!
Game 2: +2 Timely Reinforcements, +3 Sweepers, +2 Stony Silence, +1 Electrolyze, -3 Mana Leak, -1 Sphinx's Rev, -2 Elspeth, -2 Remand. I mulliganed to 5 (all my mulligans were one spell or one land), and kept Bolt, and 2 Timely. I Bolted T2 overseer and was being pestered by 2 memnites and a vault skirge. 2 Timely brought me plenty of time and blocked the double signal pestered critters until a drew verdict followed by Stoney silence. Slowly beat her to death with Collonade.
Game 3: I was due for a good hand! T2 Stoney Silence, T4 Wrath. GG.
Round 4: Merfolk. I wasn't sure what to expect here, as this player swaps decks frequently and is generally very good.
Game 1: He won the roll, played turn on Cavern of Souls and Aether Vial. My double remand was looking quite bad. He cast Cosi's trickster using an island, which met remand and a laugh. Basically he got me to ten, our graveyards had 20+ cards each and I got there when Collonade was the only beat stick on the board in top deck mode.
Game 2: +2 Verdict, +1 Electrolyse, -3 Mana Leak. This game was trading Merfolk for bolts early, then drop Geist. I hit him clean once, and the next turn he dropped his load. Couple lords and a trickster, and one card left in hand. I attacked with Geist. He thought for a while, before blocking with a Lord of Atlantis 4/4, then said 'oh man!! ... *sigh*' and started picking up his dudes before I even cast verdict. He showed me spell pierce in hand as my second Geist beat him to death.
This was my first time playing this list ever! Was very fun. In the games where it worked it just felt lucky to a grosse level. As in 'yeah, I've got an answer for that', 'now I'll win'. 3-1 was a good outing against a pretty competitive field. After some trades and playtesting this is the list I will run next time.
I didnt like Sphinx's Rev in the midrange UWR, and would just prefer early disruption or threats. Mana Leak is just sub-par to Remand in this list too. i traded for Angels, Batterskull and Mincensors. If Ajani's +1 actually tapped then he'd be in too. Otherwise Elspeth was better on D and Offence for me. Hope you enjoy the read, I love hearing tournament reports! Still want a couple Cliques, lemme know what u think!
@Kryxo, fun read. I too, really enjoy reading tournament reports. Ill definitely be doing some once I get the rest of my deck put together (fetches, cliques). How much worse does the deck get without the cliques? Thinking of getting them last so I can get to playing ASAP. Will probably replace them with Aven Mindcensor's for the time being.
Without Clique ur weaker verse combo, and it's harder to clear the way for a walker/ etc. The list is also a bit more threat light and you need to lean on Geist entirely for pressure early. Also burn I guess. Cliques just play perfectly into this lists tempo oriented game plan. Side them out vs aggro though!
As far as 4 sweepers are concerned; I found I was boarding them in very frequently. I won games if they resolved in 3/4 of my matches, and also won vs BUG delver after casting one, even if it was situational. I just love them vs Pod too. Meta call for sure though, I'd understand three and would consider cutting one to even out a rough matchup.
I like Ajani too, but he was just underwhelming throughout the tournament. Not being able to tap stuff, but rather just keeping it tapped was easy for goyfs and finks etc to play defense. I was never able to cut off a mana color with him, and in top deck mode his best option was to come down, helix and die soon after. Definitely happy to be persuaded to bring him back, I do love the card! Just was outperformed on the day my Elspeth.
I have been playing without clique until a few weeks ago, the only real match up where he really shines is vs the mirror.
Sure, hes useful vs combo too, but at that point in time (t3) i prefer a counter, specially flux.
It is true you are a bit threath light, so you would need to run either ajani, batterskull or elspeth, to put a bit more pressure.
Im surprised you didnt like ajani, in this deck he wins games alone. His ultimate is a real threat, and keeping things tapped is actually a lot simpler than it seems, all you need is the correct timing, and smart plays before ajani lands, once he does, if they cant kill him in 1 or 2 turns its gg.
I feel like Spell Snare is a great 2 of in this deck, and also your sideboard might need more cards that deal with tron, but other than that it is very similar to my list.
I am also very tempted to run Elspeth, as if you hit her with Geist on the field, it generally spells doom for your opponent...That being said, she still seems like a win more card...if you have control and Geist is on the field, you should win 9 times out of 10 anyways...
It could just be my misplays with Ajani, as I mentioned it was my first time piloting the list. I'll chuck him back in again for now.
I prefer Remand when tempo is key and I just need to draw gas or more distuption to get there. VS GR Tron I board in Stoney Silence for Maps etc and Oblivion Stone. Also Mindcensors and Counterflux. Otherwise I personally would up the cryptic count too. Bouncing Wurmcoul or Karn is a decent attempt to recover if one gets through, then another cryptic or snapcaster as a hard counter. Tron can hold of a turn if they suspect Mana Leak to make up the extra 3 mana.
For Eldrazi, is our new m14 sac an attacking creature spell viable? Also hits opposing Geist and Bogles and Infect. Maybe not, but food for thought.
Tron with Eldrazi: Not so good because you need him to attack before you can use the card. You'll have to sacrifice permanents before you can kill it.
Boggles: It might be useful in this MU, but if there aren't a lot of these decks in your local meta don't bother preparing for it. EE does the job well and can be used for other MUs
Infect: Burn spells + Spellskite is better
Geist Mirror: It might work for the mirror but I don't like dedicating 2-3 slots that doesn't do a lot in other MUs.
Even if it means pulling the second Tectonic Edge, I think Moorland Haunt is great in this deck in the mirror, against affinity, and to put a faster clock potentially on tron...
I love this card in UWR and it has won me quite a few games...
The matchups where you would board in Stony Silence don't generally have ways to destroy it. Just look at Affinity, Tron, and even rogue artifact based decklists; they just don't run anything to deal with it.
