You need something agasint the Gy, agaisnt pod, and maybe tron too.
In my personnal experience, stony silence is better for those match ups than wear/tear, so i switched from athe 2-2 split to a 3-1 stony-wear.
Somebody up there asked why not run relics, and the reason is actually quite simple, they are SO easy to play around, its not worth it.
4th path. There is absolutely no reason nor excuse for not run 4 paths on your 75, and maybe a batterskull on the side, for those matches that you need to grind, like jund or junk.
Finally, i dont know your meta, but something against some kind of RDW would be nice to have too, maybe kor firewalker, timely reinforcements or spellskite. Pyroclams would be a great too for mirrors, affinity, melira and the like, dont waste your time with ratchet bomb, without sun titan its not all that good.
Hope that helps
Really good analysis. One thing that is stumping me is what to do against RDW, in particular straight-burn. Hallow and Rest for the Weary just seem bad. Anyway, I haven't seen much aggro in my meta (yet).
Lot of reports, which is cool! Here's mine from last night. Gonna be real short.
Match 1: Ad Nauseum Grace (1-2)
Game 1 - He opens with double suspended Lotus Blooms and I'm convinced he's playing some version of Eggs, that is until he drops Phyrexian Unlife. I'd only heard of the deck a few days ago so I didn't really know how to play against it (other than to counter Ad Nauseum). He waits me out and goes off when I have no counters.
Game 2 - I stick Geist and end it quickly.
Game 3 - I've boarded in Stony Silence and Counterflux, but he rips the flux with Inquisition, and tries to go off. He's at 0 life so I cast Cryptic countering Ad Nauseum bouncing Unlife, but he Pacts of Negation and all I'm holding is Remand. He wins next turn. Now that I'm writing this I should've remanded the Ad Nauseum to draw out the Pact, and then Cryptic to bounce and counter. That's my inexperience + a playing mistake to blame.
Match 2: Melira Pod (1-2)
Was great seeing this, since it's my other Modern deck I knew just what to do against it. Playing against Voice was new for me, but was never a problem. What was a problem was the Sigarda, Host of Herons he stuck game 1 and then again game 3. Saw no Verdicts or counters game 3 so no answers for it. In this match, I can say I lost to exactly 1 card, not the deck.
Match 3: GU Janky homebrew (1-1-1)
Hadn't been to this LGS in years so I had no idea about anything, but it was nice to see 3 girls playing in this event, and in this match, I was paired with one of them. She was pretty new to the game (had to explain most things, especially my walkers) but wanted to play so she didn't just sit around while her BF was playing. I was real patient with her cause I wasn't going to top 8 even with a 3-2 record, and Magic is more fun when, well, when it's fun.
Game 1 I Remand everything and -7 with Ajani Vengeant and it's over. Game 2 went to time because both games were extremely slow, but the game started turning around as she landed Nimbus Swimmer on 5, then Roughshod Mentor, then Simic Skyswallower, then Goyf. Ajani had the Swimmer tapped down for awhile, but the Sky Swallower ended it. Not enough time to even do Game 3.
Match 4: Esper weird stuff (2-0)
Games 1 and 2 were easy but I say weird stuff because I saw Sin Collector, Emancipation Angel, Deathless Angel, Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, Mortify, Growing Ranks, and (This was actually a blowout) Mindslaver. He got it down game 2 and took control of my turn, -2 ing Ajani to kill Geist, then Helixing Ajani, then Electrolyzing me to the face. I rip Path and get the Deathless Angel, but he follows up with Sorin. 2 Tokens later I rip Cryptic, tap his other flyers, bounce Sorin, animate 2 Colonnades and swing for exactly 8, which is what I managed to get him down to.
Match 5: UWR Control, Wafo Tapa style (2-0)
I felt bad for him cause his deck should've performed much better. Game 1 he's stuck on 2 land for awhile and I stick Geist turn 3. He catches up and Verdicts, but I've got another Geist, drop Elspeth swing for 9 and game. Game 2 I stick Geist again on turn 3 (I have no idea where his counters are) and he sees no verdicts. Game again.
I'm disappointed that I went 2-2-1 but whatever, it was my first Modern event ever and I had no idea what the meta looked like. Rhinne, you were right about Ratchet Bomb, never even looked at it, although there was someone running Affinity. Counterflux is probably the best answer I had against Ad Nauseum Grace, if that deck takes off we might want 3 in the sideboard; if you don't have to worry about Pact of Negation's lose the game effect, I hear it's pretty damn good. For reference I ran the list I posted a few posts back with the following sideboard:

Like you said, they only have pact of negation and slaughter pact to protect themselves with until they can go off (on the nuts turn 4 uncounterable w/ Boseiju), typically 5-6. Stony Silence, a well timed Disenchant, Chalice of the Void at 0, and several other answers will completely negate their deck. Once you've looked the deck over and you know how to play against it, you'll realize that its quite doable with our current 60 and it only is more in our favor once you dig into your board.

I actually think the midrange is better positioned than the control version.
I dont really know what happended to you, but topkens is a bad mutch up for us, regardless of your list. jund and GW are hard match ups too, specially if they are able to resolve a sword, since we have no way of getting rid of it G1.
hey guys. playing a pretty big tournament this sunday at a local shop. i expect about 30 people, most of whom are pretty competitive.
i don't know the meta because modern hasn't really been run at the shops before. should be a brand new meta. i do know there will be at least one melira pod, one tron, and one waco-tapa UWR control. there will probably be an affinity and a fish. so it's basically not going to be heavily skewed towards a playstyle, but more a representation of modern as a whole. so i think i'm pretty well positioned.
anyways, i need your help. my mainboard is concrete and is the list i'll be playing. but my sideboard is in shambles. can you guys help me tweak it?
Rest in Peace just hoses a lot of strategies. You'll want 2. I found that I wanted more wrath effects; I had the most trouble with big guys that I couldn't touch, and combos I couldn't stop. This deck does a wonderful job dealing with fair decks like midrange, and even most aggro stuff. I think you should run another Wrath, or a Verdict. Drop the Seas, you have 2 tec edges. 1 of Det Sphere won't do much, and unless you expect more Tron, drop the Sowing Salts. They're bad against pretty much everything else. I'm sure other people will know more.

I would definitely cut some spreading seas for a couple of Counterflux. I know it's 3 mana, but it's pretty good in other matchups like Scapeshift and somehow decent vs Tron. Batterskull might be good if you can resolve it in the UWR mirror. Against Affinity, the first thing that comes to my mind would be Engineered Explosives. Against Pod, you already have Stony Silence. I don't think you'll have a lot of issues with it, just be careful with Voice. Other than that, you're alright since the deck runs a lot of removal. If you can sneak in a couple of Spellskites, it can be used against Infect, Twin and Boggles.
You guys probably talked about this before. I'm just curious on how you all feel about having a 1 of Deprive in the deck?
The situations are few and far between when I want to be behind on a land in this deck. Maybe because I play so many 4 drops, but I also want to have the option of activating Colonnade ASAP. I can see it might be good mid to end game when you want to just say "no", but Cryptic Command is just better in that case. I'd run that as a 1 of over Deprive any day.
you guys aren't a fan of the seas, eh? we do have 2 edge against tron, but sowing salt is leaving and we have so much removal that is basically useless against tron.
-2 Sowing Salt
-2 Grafdigger's Cage
+2 Counterflux
+2 Rest in Peace
the seas present an option for more land denial that cantrips, allowing us to shift out lightning bolts. thoughts?

I'm not a fan of Spreading Seas tbh. It's still up to you if you want it in your 75. It could be good vs RG Tron but it's not that relevant for the Mono U Tron matchup.

ignoring the 2 spot for seas, how does this look:
2 Wrath of God
2 Stony Silence
2 Counterflux
2 Rest in Peace
2 Cryptic Command
1 Shadow of Doubt
1 Sphinx's Revelation
1 Seachrome Coast
the 2 cryptic make a playset, and the seachrome is a 26th land to support the move to all control.
Mmm i dont like the cryptics in the side. At all. You play 2 main, so that should be enough.
Shifting to a control strategy sounds cute, but any decent control deck will still be better than you at it, and against midrange and aggro, its not necessary.
I would focus on stopping combos like melira and scapeshift, and having an answer for mirror matches.
Shadow of doubt is not bad, but you will want to play 2 if thats where you want to be, 1 just isnt enough.
A 3rd wrath, as suggested is not a bad idea, as is batterskull, and you DEFINITLY want spellskite.
Also, you have no outs for artifacts that arent activated or enchantments, so at least 1 wear/tear should be in your 15, of not 2.
I would cut the 2 commands, the sphinxs, and the land, and add 2 spellskite, 1 wear/tear, and something else. Maybe another wrath effect, maybe another counterflux, maybe an elspeth for added aggro against things like tron and wafo tapa.
i used to have 1 verdict in there with the 2 wraths--can't remember why i took it out. maybe i'll throw one back in. need to track down a spellskite, and i like having 2 shadow to go with the 1 of isochron.
2 Wrath of God
2 Counterflux
2 Stony Silence
2 Rest in Peace
2 Shadow of Doubt
1 Spreading Seas
1 Spellskite
1 Wear // Tear
1 Batterskull
1 Supreme Verdict
better. i don't like spreading seas, and most of it all i don't like it taking the spot the second wear // tear deserves. You'll really want it so badly if a blood moon resolves. I don't even like the mono spellskite, you should probably go 2x or none... Shadow of doubt... well, nice, but i never layed it since there are better options i think. If you wanna stop Pod you can go Grafdigger's cage and if you wanna stop scapeshift, counter spells like dispel are just better in more MUs (Twin, mirror, etc)
the only reason i'm hard on shadow of doubt is the two-cost for isochron and the replacement effect. my list wants to be more tempo, i think, so getting draw is useful. i should be at 4 remand if that's the case. but i hear you.
2 Wrath of God
2 Counterflux
2 Stony Silence
2 Rest in Peace
2 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Wear // Tear
2 Spellskite
1 Supreme Verdict
If what you want is a 2 cmc spell to stop pod or scapeshift, can i suggest Trickbind? It hits almost the same spells shadow of doubt does, and in exchange for not cantripping, its a lot more versatile, and has split second, a REALLY under valued ability.
3 Stony Silence (Affinity, all Tron decks, that new Eggs deck)
3 Grafdigger's Cage (Pod, assorted tutors, Glass Canon Griselbrand)
2 Wrath of God (Thrun)
2 Celestial Purge (Lili, Varolz, Twin, Glass Canon Griselbrand)
2 Counterflux (Scapeshift, Twin, Storm)
2 Rest in Peace/Relic of Progenitus (Living End, Glass Canon Griselbrand, Storm)
1 Dispel (any deck with counterspells)
Other good options are Wear//Tear, Elspeth, Knight-Errant (for Control), Pyroclasm (Pod, tokens). I think the last three slots are really flexible (gy hate and Dispel), so I could easily see these being 2 Wear//Tear, 1 Elspeth. If you think your Pod matchup is good you can also cut the Cages, but that card is so good versus them and I it's so popular that I think it's worth it.

That's a lot of sweepers and GY hate. I think 2 is enough. You could probably a replace Wrath effect for Engineered Explosives.

You dont need 6 hate cards against melira, and glass griselbrand isnt even a deck anymore since seething song ban.
Having a lot fo hate to make sure you win is fine and all, but people here seem to forget that there are MORE people in the room playing this deck and its control variant besides them.
What are you gonna do agaisnt those? Pray to top deck geist first?
You need to have at least 2 cards for the mirror match, or you wont win it.
I don't see 6 hate cards for Pod. There's Cage, but all the other have crossover applications, which is exactly what you need in a deck like this.
Glass Cannon is a deck as is Storm, even without Song. Both had good appearances in GP Portland. Also, as is clear in my post, no cards are dedicated hate versus it. But they can be used if you come to face the deck (Purge is mainly for Jund and Twin, Cage for Pod, etc). I don't get the harshness of you response, but unfortunately it appears to be a norm around here.
As noted, Eslpeth is good versus Control decks, as well as Counterflux and Dispel.
I believe at least 3 Stony Silence, 2 Counterflux and 2 Celestial Purge should be a given. Some PWs like Elspeth and Ajani are good. EE is a bit slow, I like Wrath/Supreme and Pyroclasm more. Spellskite is good versus Burn, Bogle and Infect.
Really good analysis. One thing that is stumping me is what to do against RDW, in particular straight-burn. Hallow and Rest for the Weary just seem bad. Anyway, I haven't seen much aggro in my meta (yet).

2 Wrath of God
2 Counterflux
2 Stony Silence
2 Rest in Peace
2 Shadow of Doubt
1 Spreading Seas
1 Spellskite
1 Wear // Tear
1 Batterskull
1 Supreme Verdict
the only reason i'm hard on shadow of doubt is the two-cost for isochron and the replacement effect. my list wants to be more tempo, i think, so getting draw is useful. i should be at 4 remand if that's the case. but i hear you.
2 Wrath of God
2 Counterflux
2 Stony Silence
2 Rest in Peace
2 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Wear // Tear
2 Spellskite
1 Supreme Verdict
