If you guys want to know anything specific about the matches, let me know, I just have to be up early and don't want to spend the time tonight to write up a whole report for the night. Also, I know these are just FNM reports, but I figure any content on the deck is better than nothing
Nice deck! But isn't archangel avacyn a nonbo with some of your creatures? When it transforms.
I think this deck might end up flipping to the more predominant UWx deck taking over straight UW control in light of Abzan CoCo and Elves moving up in meta share. I've dusted off my old geist deck and starting to get some reps in atm - how do you guys feel about Abzan CoCo?
Im thinking 2x Anger of the Gods (main deck) with Cage, RIP, Needle out of the board..
Won both games vs Tron on the back of T3 geist (2-0) a piece. Didn't have the chance to test against Abzan Coco/Vizier combo, but I think the matchup is favorable to us, especially post sideboard where 2 Surgicals are there to remove their combo pieces, and they become bad Abzan deck while we beat them with GST, Angels and Dragons. Stormbreath Dragon is flexi spot, as there's a lot of Path to Exile decks right now in the meta, not mentioning it is also good vs lingering souls token strategies.
The Steel of the Godhead wins games, if your curve T3 GST then T4 Steel, opponents scoop unless they play Lily. G2 I remove it depends on the matchup. Very good card when you are racing your opponents life total, it can even outrace Smashers without any problem.

2 anger main would be more suited to a nahiri control build or a resto-kiki-wall build than a geist build.
I feel vizier CoCo is a favorable matchup for uwr. Electrolyze, Snapcaster is king, and Izzet Staticaster from the side is often backbreaking.
Thats right! Thanks! I added two to my sideboard.
Anyone have a general sideboard guide? I have some of the sideboard cards commonly used but because I'm pretty new to modern, I don't always know what to bring and what to take out against what.
Just for the most common matchups like affinity, grixis control and shadow and jund would be good.
thanks!
Vs. Affinity (2-1)
G1 removed all his creatures and eventually Snap killed him with attacks.
G2 I had T2 Stony Silence against an empty board and lost a couple turns later. Only had Hallowed Fountain and tec edge and lost to Master of Aetherium + friends.
G3 Similar to first game.
Vs. Temur Scapeshift (2-0)
Opponent's draws didn't seem to line-up well. First game I burned him out and hit with Snap plus Clique. In the second game Ult Nahiri.
Vs. Elves (2-1)
G1 opp mulled to 5 but still won. I drew mostly lands and counters and he had cavern on elf and human. (Viser combo).
G2 I stabalize at 1 life with Ajani Vengeant and slowly claw back and ult Nahiri
G3 Similar to G2. Almost lost. Ajani and Nahiri helped me stabalize and won in extra turns off higher life total.
Vs. U/W Control (2-0)
G1 burned opp out
G2 opp mulled once but never got to land three and nahiri ult
Vs. Abzan (classic/souls)(2-1)
This match was very grindy and we also went to time in G3 and I won the trial because I was at 3 life and he was at 2 (though he had lili and noble hierarch and I had stone nothing.
So I got the byes and felt pretty good all things considered. But as modern often is things were not easy.
R3 TitanShift (1-2)
G1 T5 scapeshift (had countered 2 rampspells)
G2 Ult Nahiri
G3 T4 Scapeshift with 3 mana up to pay for Mana Leak
So I felt pretty unlucky after that round.
R4 Affinity (2-1)
G1 I killed EVERYTHING...but I only had 29 cards left in the deck and still hadn't seen a Nahiri, or colonnade so the game took forever.
G2 opp beat Stony silence and got me with a really sweet exact kill that I didn't see coming (the turn before I would have killed with Clique). Double plating on Champion then after damage double shrapnel blast! I had a helix but it was exactly lethal.
G3 opp stumbled on lands and I beat down iwth double snap.
R5 G/B Tron (2-0)
G1 Opp mulls and keeps a bad 6. I clique him in draw step and take an essential ramp piece and kill him with burn.
G2 I counter two ramp pieces and get down Geist and then Nahiri (I made a mistake in sequencing which didn't allow me to leave up snare and then he top decked sylvan scrying!!! Got tron but only had Karn. He exiled Nahiri and I topdecked an untapped land to kill him with geist plus colonnade.
I felt pretty decent being at 4-1 but modern anything can happen and it did = (
R6 Jeskai Nahiri (1-2)
Not a ton to say about this one. I easily won g1 with T1 AV and my opp easily won G2-3 with T1 visions. I was caught with a bunch of Ajani, Nahiris in hand game 2.
R7 Burn (1-2)
And here is where the wheels completely fell off. I won G1 (barely) after countering 4 burn spells and resolving 2 lifegain spells, he had to point a rift bolt at Nahiri and I still had to pass back to him against two cards at 7 life = (
I won but it felt like he was running way too hot.
In the second game I drew too many mana leak and no real action and opp only drew two lands and all burn.
G3 I resolve two lightning helix again and my opp only draws two land for entire game (again) plus my one land from a path. And I lose. Felt quite bad.
R8 Counters Company (1-2)
Opp mulls, never casts a spell and I win.
G2 opp mulls to 5 I have no disruption somehow and he T4 infinite combos me.
G3 Grinded for like 38 minutes and he eventually got me with the old Archangel of Thune Spike feeder combo.
R9 Eldrazitron
I only played this round because I was waiting for a friend to finish and was pretty tilted. My opp draws were normal nothing too tough but G1 I feel pretty far behind and too slow. G2 I just couldn't line anything up. Kept resolving Geist but they were brickwalled by a bunch of TKS.
Anyways, this tourney felt very swingy based on opening hands and hate cards. Sometimes my opps were super unlucky like when I beat Tron and Scapeshift easily. Sometimes they were running insane like Titanshift, Burn and Jeskai opp.
Overall 9-5 on the weekend after starting (technically) 9-1.
In retrospect I shouldn't have included Elpseth. She was very strong in GP Guangzhou but this tourney was much different. I most-likely should have had a Ceremonious Rejection. Izzet Staticaster was also fine but I sometimes felt overloaded on "good cards" against creatures so perhaps that spot should have been a second Crumble to dust.
THose are my thoughts on this one see you guys next time!
TappingStones, would you mind sharing your overall sideboard plans against the main decks in the current meta?
I usually play UWR Midrange with Geist of Saint Traft and Restoration Angel.
Are you still running the list you posted a few pages back? If so could you share your sideboard plans? I was very interested in your version of Nahiri Control that runs more like a midrange shell.

How are you uwr geist players doing against the new hype, Grixis Shadow? How do you sideboard that matchup? A little unsure what to keep in of counterspells and creatures. Is gideon (AoZ) worthwhile in that matchup?

I don't think Gideon Ally of Zendikar is good against death shadow decks. Mainly the ones that can run Temur Battlerage for surprise trample. The ones that can't usually have Traverse the Ulvenwald so they'll probably have multiple Shadows on the board when they go for the kill.
I've been away from magic a while due to university, but I am picking up my old list and making a few changes according to the very little insight I managed to gain watching a recent a recent GP. I may actually take this list to my first ever in over 5 years of competitive magic and decades as a casual. My main problem seems to be Dredge and rogue lists. Esper control decks which are rare, that run esper charm can also be problematic... I gave up on trying to fight Tron, land removal off the sideboard is usually to slow and I prefer having a sideboard that can hit more decks, rather then trying to win an otherwise unfavorable matchup against Tron even with sideboard hate. I also feel like the two ghost quarters and PtE are enough to deal with all sorts of manlands before they become too dangerous.
Don't know if I should run 3 Rest in Peace and Eidolon of Rhetoric for Storm (siding out: Snapcasters) or if I should replace Eidolon for a 4th Rest in Peace. Since the thing I really playing against is really Dredge, but I don't want to over commit, I am not sure if I should run a three or four card combination between Rest in Peace and Grafdigger's Cage.
Also I am currently not running Electrolyze because Affinity is not very popular right now and I feel like I have enough removal for them. In its place I introduced a Boros Charm for extra reach and more Geist savers, which made some sense to me since I also reduced the number of Restoration Angels down from three to two, because Jund/Abzan midrange and other decks of the like aren't very prevalent. I used that spot to place a mainboard Blessed Alliance that acts as effective removal against Deathshadow and Jund/Abzan midrange (assuming I can kill the critters with bolts) and as an extra lifegainer against the ever so prevelent burn decks. Any opinions? I really want to get day2 on my first GP.
Edit: Decklist update 21st June 2017 (16 days after original post). Loses hard against Counter Company and Eldrazi Tron. Wins everything else rather easily. Only played 46 matches with it, so don't take my word for it.

If you go to the Jeskai Control primer (it's also here in tier two) on either the most recent page, or the previous page I have a VERY long list of my sideboard plan pre GP Kobe.
After the event a couple changes I would make : Maindeck- +1 Scalding Tarn -1 Island +1 Sideboard -1 Elspeth, -1 Izzet Staticaster, -1 Crumble to Dust +3 Ceremonious Rejection
Okay so after an FNM I went 2-2. Lost to lantern control and storm. How do we beat those matchups? I felt pretty hopeless, specially in lantern matchup.
Okay so after an FNM I went 2-2. Lost to lantern control and storm. How do we beat those matchups? I felt pretty hopeless, specially in lantern matchup.
I haven't played against Lantern Control with this, but storm is fairly simple. Never tap out until right before your own turn, kill their Baraals and Goblin Electromancers right away whenever possible, hold countermagic for their first spliced desperate ritual or Past in Flames, and whenever possible, flash in a snapcaster, Clique, Restoration Angel, or Spell Queller whenever you have mana to spare before you untap. Their storm cards are sorcery speed, so they wont be able to take advantage of it.
Then from there the plan is to just beat them down with flash creatures into burn range before they manage to go off through counters/removal. This is actually a matchup where I'd side out Geist for extra Lightning Helixes or Negate/Dispel
I'm of the opinion that Storm is one of our best matchups. Lantern, not so much, but it's certainly winnable. I went 4-0 at my last FNM and was planning on doing a write up, but haven't taken the time yet. I will tomorrow. Ranched all over Storm during my match against it.
Ok thanks guys! I'm pretty new to modern and this matchup looked hard. But yeah their win con's are sorcery speed so that's good.
What is the stuff I should counter? Their past in flames and their mana ramps right? Should I counter gifts ungiven or just wait and once again counter their mana ramps?
