Don't remember. It's on youtube though, you can find it pretty quickly if you're interested. Guy also ran Jace's Ingenuity maindeck and it looked decent.
There's quite a bit of burn/affinity/zoo. I didn't expect so much burn, and it'll have an effect tomorrow as it's a cheap deck. Removed a counterflux and stony silence for two timely reinforcements.
In the affinity matchup timely is also very good. Not as much as stony silence, but hey.
The tron matchup becomes a bit worse without counterflux and the stony silence, but there wasn't much tron (and I believe it's still a decent matchup).
Other control/twin matchups are a little bit worse, but I'd rather play the timely against burn and zoo, which seem like decently bad matchups for this geist deck
Was thinking of switching the hellkite from the main for a batterskull. Also thought of playing an extra helix over either a cryptic or an electrolyze. Decided against both since there's 30% abzan on the pro tour (although less problem with this for the PPTQ, as the deck is expensive!)
There's a strange bind for the deck having to be good against both junk and aggro decks (e.g. lightning helix sucks against junk, is amazing against burn. Or cryptic the other way around), while still having to play well against control.
Edit:
Removed a single restoration angel for a lightning helix after a bunch of testing. I love restoration angel, but with hellkite, 3 cryptics and 3 resto, there was one expensive spell too much. I also found that it often just eats junks removal spells that do not hit the geists and get stuck in hands. Sad change for me, but I think it's better.
Why do you say that tron and scapeshift are bad matchups?
It depends on your build, true, but the more controlling version is fine against both IMHO.
For Tron, you have a clock and ways to deal with their threats. Path for wurmcoil, cryptics/remands for their ostones/wurmcoils/karns. Clique is also amazing. I wouldn't say this matchup is unfavorable. Every deck loses against a turn 3 Karn really, but turn 4 is quite winneable. You also do not give them enough time to emrakul.
Can you tell me UWR Midrange's matchups against: Abzan, Scapeshift and Tron?
pretty bad, indeed. post SB it only goes worse.
I have a more controlling list (with 3 snares, 4 remands and 2 Cryptics mainboard, and 2 counterflux sideboard) and i always felt that I have an edge against Scapeshift. Everyone here says it's an awful match, but again, that is not my experience, from my experience we are (slightly) favourite. Against Tron they are favourites but post sideboard it's even. They don't have that many hate post board against us, and we have some things to hate them on. Against Abzan is simply a bad matchup, pre and post sideboard. In this case i think maybe a more aggro version is better (usually when i win, is by throwing all the burn to my opponents face, and sometimes sacrificing the geist so the 4 damage could pass).
Hey Nate, thanks for your videos, I really appreciate the effort you put into them.
That said, I'm gonna be a slight devil's advocate here and critique some choices. I hope you can use the friendly criticism
I don't know about the black splash. For just tasigur I don't think it's worth it. It's just 2 sideboard cards and you are basically running an extra island and plains in the deck. The manabase seems a bit wacky to me because f it. So many lands that do not tap for red, although you run Thundermaw. If you put Tasigur in the deck and you have a landlight hand, you will be hard to pressed to search for all needed sources all the time. You also have a higher chance of drawing just 'basics' and tec edge with 8 of em in the deck. I think the very slight improvement in some matchups that tasigur might give over other sideboard cards is lost by the %s you will lose because of a more unstable mana-base. Not to mention that you can be fulminator/tec edged off of black.
Although I do like the Lingering Souls idea, I also wonder if it's worth the splash. So we side it in against junk/jund/rock, affinity and zoo. Is lingering souls so much better than say, 4x timely reinforcements? You get 3 tokens without flying, one more for less mana, and you gain 6 life to boot. Although it's a bit worse in the junk/affinity matchups, it has the benefit of making your burn matchup a hell of a lot better! Lingering souls might be a slight bit better overall too, but again, is it worth the mana-base instability against the other 60% of the metagame where you don't side in souls?
I also feel your list is oversideboarding for the junk matchup. Naturally we want a bit more sideboard cards against that deck than before. But at the moment it's only 16% of the meta! There's so many more decks to prepare against. In what other matchups is valorous stance really good? Just the midrange decks I guess, perhaps some primeval titan decks. That's at most 25% of the meta, and not that big of an upgrade. Same goes for rev, that's a definite 1 off card IMO, especially in your more tempo oriented list.
I'd rather play relics in my sideboard, not only are they great against junk, they are also great against a lot of other decks like tempo twin, any UWR list, storm and rogue GY decks like living end or dredge. Same goes for cards like wrath of god, ajani. And especially for threads of disloyalty. Why kill goyf / rhino for 2 if you can steal goyf/scooze for 3?
Lingering Souls has been awesome, it's worth it, the mana is great and we get to keep Ghost Quarter.
You will be happy to see we tested Rev and liked it.
Relic is ok vs Junk but not good enough in testing. Remand is great vs Living End.
This is the latest in cumulative testing from the community and TeamGeist. I feel this is the best we have come up with so far before the conclusion of the pro-tour and taking into account how it may shift things around.

This is the latest in cumulative testing from the community and TeamGeist. I feel this is the best we have come up with so far before the conclusion of the pro-tour and taking into account how it may shift things around.
Just came back from a modern PPTQ with 90 players (wasn't the change supposed to decrease PTQ sizes? Jeez).
Went 4-3, basically played very experienced players every round. Didn't feel unfavored in any of them. I 2-1 or 1-2'ed basically all games except for the RUG delver one which was 2-0.
Bit bummed because of the result, got mostly stuck on a few lands in a bunch of my losses. However, the deck felt good, and I'm happy with the way I played.
Round 1: All-in Twin 1-0
Only inexperienced player I played against. Geist mostly won me the game. Did get blown out by double pact of negation in game 2 and lost. Not a bad matchup at all
Round 2: Burn 2-0
Played against a former german pro. Timely reinforcements and the 3rd lightning helix change I made the day before the tournament: These were game-breaking, castint two timelies in one game and it was still close. Without them the matchup is horrible on the draw.
Round 3: Affinity 2-1
Lost game 1 to an unlucky land draw from my side, opponent was able to instant equip his cranial multiple times for the win and I didn't have the answers. Game 2 I won through 2 etched champions with EE and mana leak. Game 3 lost to etched champion with ravager counters on it while stuck on 2 lands... My opponent played 4 etched champions, of which 2 main (almost no list does this), and they really took the games. Didn't see my EE or wrath game 3. Sad I didn't have the stony silence :). Matchup feels fine really, game 2 was a complete steamroll with all the removal I had in the deck. Ajani did immense work too. Guy went top 8...
Round 4: Makeshift 2-2
Friend of mine (Ricardo) made this deck big, so I knew how to play against it. Won game 1 quite handily with a clique/angel/snap in play. I boarded in the 2x Wear//Tear against the defense grids I knew would come in. Sadly enough, defense grid was cast multiple time in one game, and once in the last game for a win. That was the real blowout, without defense Grid I would probably have won both games, and it's only a 2 off in the list ;(. Again, not an unfavorable matchup, but perhaps I shouldve kept in 2 spell snares since defense grid is such a blowout? Also counters farseek if needed (don't counter sakura tribe elder or you get summoning trapped!!!)
Round 5: RUG delver 3-2
Opponent was a tournament regular, strong player. Played a weird brew with delver, goyf and hooded mandrills. Lost game 1 due to the mandrills and being low on life, he disrupting shoaled me off all the removal spells on it. Won game 2 and 3 on the top of geist and plenty of removal. Matchup felt very favorable after sideboarding. Just boarded in 2 Negates, 2 Relic, Bskull, Wrath and timelies.
Round 6: Storm 4-2
Opponent was Thomas Hendriks, played in a modern GP top 8 before, and all around very good player. Stuck a geist twice, he couldn't combo off through remands and negates, I won. He was a bit unlucky fizzling on this draws though, he lost against himself. This matchup is not too great.
Round 7: GB 4-3
Opponent was another tournament regular here that always ends up top 16/top 8. Deck was GB rock. Game 1 I got trampeled over by too many goyf/tasigurs. Game 2 played out like I wanted, Although I was stuck on 2 mana for 6 turns, I had enough removal to take away all his threats (cast like 5 paths that game), and Ajani sealed the deal in the end. Game 3 I was stuck on only a few lands again, and fulminator got me. I was one land hehind casting Ajani on a crucial turn or EE for 2 to blow up a goyf and a confidant for several turns, otherwise I would have had a decent shot to win this.
I think I played quite tightly and the deck is good. Only thing that I would change for now is to remove a cryptic (they were somewhat underwhelming really), to play an extra land. Most of the games I was on 2/3 lands for a long time. Games felt really good after sideboarding. The sideboard and the plans in each mathcup are strong.
Cards:
Geist: Happy I was playing these, won me a lot of games that any other card wouldn't have.
Resto: Didn't really see these much, were ok.
Hellkite: Only cast it once to kill lilly in game 7, would've stabilized me, but my opponent topdecked (had empty hand) another liliana to remove it :(. Never saw it besides that.
3rd Helix: It was good, especially against the burn opponent
Eletrolyze: Didn't play lingernig souls, it was great against affinity though
Spell Snare: Definately a card I'll keep 2 off in the deck. It was very good, and there's plenty of 2 drops in the meta you want to counter.
Cryptic: I used to love this in my playtestnig for GP Prague. Now however, they felt clunky, partially because of the mana problems I had every game. The one game against GB I had them they were amazing.
Remand/Mana Leak: The split is nice, Mana Leak is so much better in matchups like burn or affinity.
SB:
Timelies were great, keeping them.
Ajani: Simply amazing, might go mainboard. On an empty board he is the nuts. Kept a treetop village from attacking for ages and just ultied him for the win.
Relic: Thse were nuts, the times I resolved these against GB/RUG delver they did SO MUCH work. Kept opponent off of tasigurs for a while, shrank goyfs to 0 to bolt, and in the end they just cantripped and replaced themselves. These are defo staying in.
I too am liking Timely Reinforcements, I see some of the previous discussion mentioning Lingering Souls but some of the mono white options seem perfectly fine.
Nice write-up, thanks for that!
Did you ever feel like being constrained on mana? You have more 5 drops than my list, and a rev, and no remands to dig for mre. I felt 25 lands was too little, often I was stuck on 2 or 3 lands during my PPTQ.
Other cards to consider:
- Threads of Disloyalty (!)
- Elspeth/Keranos/baneslayer angel <- any more expensive winning card
- Celestial Flare / condemn / valorous stance <- more removal
- Rest in peace (?) a singleton at most, if you dont like your own snapcasters...
- Molten Rain - (?) Decent in multiples. It does NOT play well to either two parts of your plan though! Id only really suggest this if you play the young pyromancers.
- Porphyry Nodes - If you want to go all out control route, this is a good card.
PS. Choke is the only thing I choose not to play around... it's difficult to do so without warping your deck
Have you tried Baneslayer? I've been thinking about using it, I still have that 75th card as a flex slot and I was going between Baneslayer and Stormbreath. Stormbreath looks better to me, but I just like Baneslayer as a card. Every time I look at Baneslayer though I question why I don't use Batterskull instead.
As far as Choke goes that's part of why I'm a fan of my manabase. I've got enough Islands to use Shackles, but I have enough non Islands that I think I can play through Choke.
I did: Butterskull it's better because is removal-resistent, but still, dies from Rhino and it's token can be easily removed leaving ou with a 8mana drop.
Baneslayer dies easily from path, black pact etc, but he (or she?) flyes, have some nice protection (helkite mostly), and have F Strike that help!
Personally i have 1 baneslayer in side and she won me some match all alone, like BG rock, burn and UR control. I love that she is hardly blockable, more than i love batterskull bouncer.

My Decks on Paper: UWR Control/Midrange/Delver UWR Twin Miss you GBWJunk (still semi-budget; 3 tarmo only) GWAura Hexproof GWHatebears
I loved geist during my PPTQ, it won me matches where splicer probably wouldn't have won, but then again I didn't face a lot of junk. I would recommend 3 or 4 restos if you go that rout!
Geist is come kind of weird. There are lots of decks where you want to slam a T3 geist and then go for the beats. Sadly, that the best answer to a T3 Geist, is a turn 3 Liliana of the Veil, and as long as she is there in that numbers, Geist is bad. And with that, the whole deck.
Henry Romero was the only UWR Midrange player at the pro tour to have more than 18 points in the modern portion. He went 7-3. He beat at least one junk deck, as he won 2-0 against Brandon Remley at Junk, and lost 0-2 to Shuhei Nakamura at UWR Control (who we saw lost 0-2 to Yamomoto at Junk). I don't know what other matchups he played (his other 8 opponents didn't end up high enough to get their decklists published).
Romero played a couple of Young Pyromancers and Gitaxian Probes in his list:
Creature (11)
4 Snapcaster Mage
4 Geist of Saint Traft
2 Young Pyromancer
1 Restoration Angel
I feel the traditional UWR midrange geist is just a tiny bit too slow in todays meta, and that adding Young Pyromancer makes it faster. YP likes Gitaxian Probe and having 3 probes will let us cut 1 land (because it cycles), adding up to 23 non-creature spells. It's just a too powerful value-card to ignore, and its well positioned now that GR tron and scapeshift have cut down on Pyroclasm etc. in a meta of abzan fatties. Abzan generally hates the card as it makes Liliana look dumb and the tokens chumpblock or chumpblock + bolt-kill goyf. Against all the removal-light decks, like Affinity, Storm, Merfolk, Infect, Auras etc. you have an early turn threat that multiplies while you can hold up mana for counterspells, removal etc. to keep things in control.
My take on UWR Midrange now is this:
Don't remember. It's on youtube though, you can find it pretty quickly if you're interested. Guy also ran Jace's Ingenuity maindeck and it looked decent.

For your testing versus Junk:
Out:
-2 x Remand
-4 x Lightning Helix
-3 x Vendilion Clique
-1 x Geist of Saint Traft
In:
2 x Engineered Explosives

Why does he need to get rid of Thrun? It's a one of, if that. Lingering Souls blocks it forever.
