Can you tell me how good UWR Geist is in the actual metagame?
What are its worst matchups?
Im planning to play UWR Geist in the future, because i really love geist of saint traft. Im just wondering if it is good choice at the moment.
Hope you can give me some tips.
Thanks
Geist is a great card, but it's not always enough on it's own. POD has always been a hard matchup for the traditional uwr geist build, and geist can have a hard time getting through their blockers here. Switching geist out with mirran crusader after siding helps a lot. I also really like the Shaun McLaren package with Wall of Omens, Restoration Angel and Kiki-Jiki in this matchup. They have little removal, so a kiki-jiki will often win comboing with resto angel, and Wall of Omens hold most of their creatures at bay. Siding in Anger of the gods can also be a good plan, especially together with Wall of Omens and Resto Angel.
BG(x) can also be hard. Their 4+ toughness creatures combined with discard can make it hard for geist to get through (paths can help, but they also fuel their manlands), and Liliana can take out your solitary geist and live on discarding your cards. Having a Wall of Omens on the board before playing geist can be helpful. Here too Mirran Crusader in the side is strong, and the card advantage provided by Wall of Omens/Resto Angel can be good. I wouldn't side out all geists here however, as the hexproof is valuable against all their spot removal.
Geist is a fast clock against many decks, but you have to be careful not tapping out with it when you need to hold mana up for counters or removal against combo decks like Splinter Twin and Storm. Flash creatures like Snap, Vendillion and resto are often better in situations like that. Gitaxian Probe can be a good card in combination with geist, to make sure you know it's safe to tap out with geist.
Ok ive been trying to figure out a way to play vial. And if given the proper numbers i feel it could wreck so many decks.
That's interesting, you'd kinda have something reminiscent of merfolk I think, if you tried to do that. I could see potential in a build that utilizes 4 vendilion, 4 geist, 4 (flickerwisp/mirran crusader/other powerful 3 drop) plus collonade and backed up by a lot of cantrip spells like remand, cryptic, electrolyze, and our typical removal burn and exiles. However this would completely change the dynamic of this deck and would not be a typical midrange variant. This is Def more of a brew, try the modern deck creation section. I'd like to see what people think as well and you may even get a few people play testing a solid build from you
I disagree, though you would need a solid sideboard plan to board out geists into a control deck against pod.
do you really think geist is good against pod?
it's not.
it's not good against BG/Jund, either. and against fast combo decks.
it's not good against zoo.
it's not good against affinity.
i can go on
Reading a person's post is really important.
I will keep geist against Bg/Jund and combo decks, and board him out vs affinity into a control deck.
Zoo is practically non-existent, though the sideboard plan is still roughly the same as vs. pod or affinity.
The deck is not a bad deck to play in a big event at all if you have experience with the deck. Even in matchups where he sucks geist still has the ability to steal wins from nowhere in game one.
The beautiful thing about this deck is the ability to move seamlessly into a control deck that tilts bad matchups into good ones.
So true I haven't seen a zoo deck since the beginning of the year. Although I've seen genesis wave and some fun aether vial green aggro type builds in the last month. That's just playing local events in two local game stores. It shouldn't be a consideration when planning a uwr build imo.
I dont like resto angel just to mana intensive i feel people Are all hung up on the fact she flashs blah blah. But the point is not tht my creatures have flash its to abuse the creautures have crazy counter and how insane is. Vial at two flash in snap FOR FREE! Flash cryptic command lol or uncounterable giest At instNt speed lol

No one is hung up on the fact that she has flash, we're hung on the ability to blink our value creatures for another use. The fact she can come in at the EOT to have pseudo-haste is just a common play.
Big whoop! Congrats u tapped out to play something. Shes killed me wayyy more then shes helped me not a big fan. U also use her to protect creatures. Which in the end makes u make mistakes. Ull hold it for wht? Save a geist or flash a cliq not tht good and i watched someone get owned because they tappped out to get resto angel gg twin. And idk y we r even talking about this i posted about vial lol
Ha! Im good i dont play electrilize izzet charm or resto. And everyone tht doubted me lost in the last tourny. Swepted it.
And i Have put alot of thought into it. Also dont feel tht i need alot of the cards the build uses. Hense the top part.
Well thats good for you then. No need to be overly arrogant about minimal testing and success, everyone is just offering advice and suggestions. Resto is commonly played, resets Snapcaster, VClique, protects geist, some builds run (or used to run) Blade Splicer and Resto is fantastic with splicer.
Personally, I don't play Restoration Angel, I recognize that it's a powerful synergy, but in games I was rarely happy to see it. I used to run a 2-2 split of Resto and Cryptic Command at the top of my curve, but I've taken out the Restos in favor of more Commands. Just my personal preference, and it's been working well for me.
Stony Silence isn't terrible in pod, but Anger of the Gods is fantastic. I side in 2x Anger of the Gods, and 2x Shadow of Doubt to blank pod activations and chords and cantrip. I usually bring wear//tear as well. Relic of progenitus makes sense, I haven't tried it, but I could see reason for including it.
If you really want to shutoff them off doing relic and stony makes their deck slightly over costed and underwhelming stack of one offs. I don't mean that to sound like they can't win but with that combo the odds are highly in your favor. Rest in peace is even better however it turns off your snaps, recently I've been siding in 2 aven mindcensor and 2 rest I peace plus relic , no stony . I figure: I'll cycle away relics if I don't need them and aven shuts off pod just as bad anything else.
Resto Angel is good because she does not die to abrupt decay and bolt. I quite like serra avenger as she lets you cast her while leaving counter mana up, though I wouldn't be testing her this close my local ptq. She dies to everything though, which is a concern.
Stony silence is a must against pod, as is RIP and anger. Since you're boarding all 4 geists out you should have plenty of space to board in these hate cards.
RIP neuters Snapcaster though, I don't like that in the side. If anything, I think Grafdigger's Cage is better if you want grave hate, since it still prevents pod combos with persist creatures, but also keeps creatures from entering off of pod. It doesn't exile the grave, yeah, but I feel like that's better for Snapcaster. Personally, I've found 2 Stony Silences, 2 Anger of the Gods, and a Wrath of God going in in place of geists and a mana leak works just fine. Wear // Tear seems reasonable, as does Celestial Purge possibly (especially for kiki pod). It's a grindy one, but far from unwinnable.
