any one tested a singleton surgical extraction side board? Considering the amount of counters we run it could be really awesome against so many decks.
Sure looking at it, it could be decent with the amount of spot removal as well as counters that we are running. The problem, though, is that its a rather narrow card that you would potentially get when you didn't need it or get it when nothing viable to target and it's a dead card in hand waiting.
I would say its definitely worth testing though. It could be great in some metas.

yah even just vs pod alone, play surgical in response to Kitchen Finks hitting the yard is pretty awesome value.
I've had Porphyry Nodes since Avacyn Restored came out originally (I tried to play it Mainboard in a Modern Miracles deck I was building) and I absolutely love it in this controlly midrange deck. Comes down T1 and obliterates so many decks out there. I've played around with it mainboard, but there were a lot of combo decks in my meta. I would 100% run it in an aggro-heavy meta in the mainboard. And to think it was $0.50 a couple of days ago haha.
Note: There are not many Pod decks in my local scene. If there were, I would have 2 Anger of the Gods and 1 Supreme Verdict in the mainboard. It's just a superior card against them.
How well do you like the deck without geist? How does the deck perform without geist? do you like it?

It is definitely going to be a little rough without fetches. Try and get ahold of those sometime soon. I would recommend running some check lands (glacial fortress). Also, I don't know how i feel about ajani in the midrange build. He belongs more in the control build.

There are definitely matchups where I miss him. There are definitely instances where he was weak. I am in an aggro heavy meta as a I stated, so there were a lot of times I would just wipe the board (or not be able to drop him for countless turns since I was either keeping mana up OR spending the turn wiping the field) that I just felt like testing without him. I have enjoyed not having him since there are a plethora of combat tricks you can do (and I would probably run 3 Vendilion Clique if you have access to him. It strengthens combo matchups a lot as well as giving a fantastic value card. There are a lot of times I'll EoT an angel on the clique targeting myself to get a two draw just to get some gas and have benefited greatly).
The other fact that angel has 4 toughness and dodges all popular sweepers and spot removal (besides aura spells and Path to Exile is quite nice as well. Also, they are essentially Snapcaster 5-8 a lot of the time (or Vendilion 3-7 without the backlash of the Legendary playing into effect).
I'll continue playing the setup I have and keep you guys updated. In a format dominated by aggro (and most combo decks being aggro-combo), I feel like Geist is found wanting.

I'm going to be testing both Ajani and Gideon (probably not at the same time) in my mid build. Ajani just seems too good against Pod (or pretty much any other deck) to say he is 'just for control'. Gideon is obviously more controllish, but could still be a fun late drop. I will also be mainboarding 2 Detention Sphere's as opposed to the standard decks. I guess that is more like a control deck, but Bitterblosson and other troublesome permanents get wrecked by it.
I personally always considered Ajani in a control shell. He's that extra spot removal/meat shield. He's that tap down to prevent a combo or aggro. He allows for running a greater amount of board wipes AND benefiting double from it (allowing free pumping on your planeswalker without pressure as well as sweeping enemy aggro).

Hey everyone, I just joined the forums in search of some help when building my first modern deck. I´m going for uwr geist, after a while of looking up decklists and looking at the protour I basically took Dezani´s decklist as a jumping off point. I just enjoy the pressure it can build up and how reactive it can be to certain threats. I´ve been looking at the meta locally and decided to cut the clique due to the heavy presence of electrolyze and include ajani vengeant along with one more cryptic command and restoration angel due to the synergy with other cards in the deck, dunno if it will make a difference until i test it out thoroughly but at least its a starting point.
I have yet to get any fetchlands, this is a huge drawback in filtering mana but it is mainly due to budget concerns. In the long run I´ll be able to get them; in the meantime, do you think the shocklands will do? Or should I include more filterlands or glacial fortess?
I´ve been thinking of cutting the porphory nodes from sb since it can potentially take out my own creatures (considering geist is a 2/2) but it seems somewhat useful against big zoo, though there are still drawbacks.
im in the same boat, and not only am I missing fetches but im missing celestial colonnade as well, ugh. the deck still works well enough, shocks are great, I just have to be careful not to do too much damage to myself. im sure our decks would suffer severely in competitive play, but for FNM or casual its still great.
Almost everything just jumped up in price, which is natural to expect yet it´s a bit exhausting as well, the prices will settle after a while. Colonnade has stayed up in the same spot, so be sure to get a set of those, it can be a finisher more often than not once geist is gone from the battlefield. I´m at the same spot that many players face when they try to get into a new format, I want to get into modern but the starting price point can be high, even once you get the entire deck minus the fetchlands, the deck still suffers from the manafixing due to the absence of those.
The rumors regarding a possible return to zendikar in the next set just makes one doubt if buying the zendikar fetches at the moment is a good idea (in the end its just pure speculation), but i think of them as an investment that will always be viable, not perhaps in monetary value (once they get reprinted the price might go down), but they just serve multiple functions in different formats across all of mtg, they prove their value in the game time and time again. Even if they get reprinted it just means those who had them from way back, don´t have to search for them in order to play standard. Edit: Just say Remand is getting reprinted in the jace vs vraska duel decks, along with future sight, glad to see that.
Dont hope too much for price drops on remand, the duel decks wont be 20 dollars anyways, if anything, that will keep the price from getting any higher. Just like with MM, price tags wont change too much.

Life from the Loam was a $15 card before it was printed in Izzet vs. Golgari. These decks are sold at big box stores and have a print run to support it.

Are you neglecting the fact that:
1. DRS was printed and made the card worse
2. It was printed in Modern Masters

Yeah, they will be $20. They are sold at MSRP at many large stores (Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Toys R Us).

Its price drop was way before MM was printed, and you might be "neglecting" the fact that these decks can't be gouged. There are players that aren't going to pay $15 when they can spend $20 and get two Planeswalkers that are easily worth $15 for the pair.
Has anyone tried Boros Reckoner, it seems it would be really good againsts zoo by giving it 1st strike. Plus other creature match ups. sure it dies to bolt(but we get to redirect 3 to something else) and PtE but so does just about everything else. I haven't tested it, but since we are mid range i think we could run it.
If someone has tested reckoner can you say how well/bad it did.
Also, since GP Richmond is coming fast and i think there will be lots of UWr Control (just because it won the PT), how about boros charm for the indy and putting 4 to the dome against storm, lili seems pretty good. Izzet charm has 3 "ok" abilities by themselves. but when they are put together on one card they do get an increase in value just because of the sheer versatility of the card.
These are just food for thought, and as i said before if anyone has tried them can they say how well/bad they were?

This the deck I will be tuning for future local tournaments and I am curious about the numbers of some spells I could be taking to an unknown meta next friday. This is what I have been using for a little while now.
This is whether to play 3-4 path to exile, lightning helix, 1-2 electrolyze as well as some help with the sideboard. I have played a lot with this deck and am far from an expert and would appreciate any input those that know more could give me.

I think you can cut the 4th path for a 3rd mana leak or electrolyze, aside from that the list looks perfect to me.
the only thing i really dont agree is with 2 veredicts and 1 anger. Either you play 2 verdicts, or 2 angers, not a split. And a lone mindsensor doesnt work, its 3 or none.
