I find myself making 5/5 creatures defensively more often than offensively nowadays. It allows you to play Tezzeret into a messy board against decks with limited removal for your 5/5. It also sets you up nicely for a JTMS. Stall the board out with 1-2 5/5 creatures and then play JTMS to unsummon the only creatures that threaten your bodies while up-ticking your Tezzeret.

@racing089 that's really insightful. I haven't tested with Jace yet and his presence in the deck seems to be a relevant enough payoff to play for a longer game perhaps. Thank you.
Hi guys I've been reading through this thread and I have been playing a version of this deck this is my first post so until I can figure out how to post a list what does everyone do about decks that present lethal by turn 3 what is our go to line of play against elves or burn or eldrazi tron ?
Creating a 5/5 is just one way to stabilize, assuming we are trying to win without bridge we can also assemble thopter combo. We can also board wipe, or remove the opponents threats with hand disruption and Liliana. My question is how do we get to stabilize a little bit faster without creating a turbo combo version and stay control. My experience with this deck is that it is possibly the most grindy deck I've ever played and has much more inevitability than any other control deck or midrange deck but struggles against all of the types of combos in modern and aggressive strategies. I know bridge actually might be our best tool against aggro but combo kind of requires that we interact with them in some way to stop their combo unless we have something like witchbane orb and they have no answer for it, but they will because we get splash hate for artifacts.
Can we transform or have more emphasis on tokens? Monastery mentor and bitterblossom are super powerful cards and slot pretty well in the deck. Mentor on board for a couple turns is about as strong as a lot of aggressive strategies. Has anyone tried favorable winds/ intangible virtue or lingering souls?
Are there any other combos that we can assemble as the game goes on? I know isochron scepter might bring up the same 2 for 1 discussion over and over but it is a card that might be able to see play in our deck. Vedalken shackles and a sack effect is quite good but really slow still. Any options we can come up with that aren't affected by stony silence or pithing needle?
What if we go back to muddle the mixture or fabricate, can that improve our manabase and allow for more colors?

Every successful deck has a 1-drop, and a way to gain life.
@Orangetj87: I think saying those decks have lethal by turn 3 is quite an exaggeration. If they have the perfect hand and you interact not at all maybe but normally burn and elves are turn 4-5 decks. Burn is a race to Thopter/Sword. If you can assemble the combo T2-T3 they will have a very hard time winning. Then you can lock the game up with Witchbane Orb afterwards if you feel you need to. I have also won many games against burn by picking apart their hand with disruption, playing Ensnaring Bridge and then ulting Tezzeret asap. I don't care if it is a kill I just want the big life gain boost. Burn is probably 50/50 before and after sideboarding.
Elves seems like an easy matchup to me. They have a very hard time beating the ensnaring bridge unless they play 4x chord of calling and 4x shaman of the pack. In addition to that you can main deck grafdigger's cage or at least have it after sideboard to heavily swing the matchup.
Eldrazi Tron is better then Gx Tron for us. Ensnaring Bridge does a lot of work in this matchup. Your needles will have to work over time here. The most important targets are Karn and Walking Ballista if you have to name it in the blind. Once you get the board into a semi controlled state get the combo going and start attacking as quick as you can. Their only real out to the combo is All is Dust and if you have an Academy Ruins you can easily recover.
Hope this helps!

Hi all here is my decklist
4 polluted delta
4 darkslick shores
2 flooded strand
4 island
1 swamp
1 academy ruins
1 inventors fair
1 inkmoth nexus
1 darksteel citadel
1 breeding pool
1 ghost quarter
4 pentad prism
1 expedition map
1 crucibal of worlds
1 witchbane orb
1 tormods crypt
1 grafdiggers cage
2 sword of the meek
2 thopter foundry
1 spellskite
1 pithing needle
1 sorcerus spyglass
1 phyrexian revoker
3 ensnaring bridge
1 chalice of the void
3 tezzerator agent of bolas
4 whir of invention
4 inquisition of kozilek
2 collective brutality
2 welding jar
And I'm at work right now so I can't remember what the last card in the deck is now but this is what I've been playing and it does really good against midrange and control but in having a hard time with aggro that uses small creatures and direct damage I can usually power out a bridge but getting my hand small enough to turn it on has proven difficult by turn 3 on the draw and disruptive creatures like turn 2 thought knot seer taking my whir or bridge into reality smasher is tough too I was just wondering how everyone else tries to play against these type of decks ? Thanks
Ps. I remember the last card in the deck it is one copy of artificers intuition

@racing089: thanks for the response I usually go for Bridge first and in my list I do main deck a cage for elves I own both elves and eldrazi tron and have been having my buddy play them against this deck and I did exaggerate by saying they have lethal t3 but it seems like the games I get steamrolled are the ones where I'm on the draw usually I just need that 1 extra turn to stabilize and I can pull out the win
I posted a deck list below originally it had more spot removal but I cut that in place of some more silver bullets and artificers intuition which has been preforming very well I get to test the deck quite a bit but it is a very meta dependent deck it seems and where my e_tron list plays o_stone over all is dust it's a lot more severe of a blowout I will take your advise and maybe go for the combo over bridge more often thanks
Hi all just played a match against e-tron. game one was t2 thoughtknot t3 smasher t4 smasher I was on the play and had a bridge in hand but it was taken by seer. games 2 and 3 I was able to stabilize with bridge and needles while pitching sword to artificers intuition to go get needle for o-stome it worked well once the combo was assembled winning was elementary thanks for the advice a mediocre hand game 3 with a ghost quarter slowed them down enough to get a bridge and then a crucibal locked up the game
Board the Weatherlight can grab, in addition to an artifact, Tezz, Inventors' Fair, Academy Ruins, Oboro (which we would probably play), Search for Azcanta, Teferi, and Padeem. Yes please. I see this possibly being a 1-3 of.
Also, I see Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage as a possible SB card against control. A solid beater that lets you play, basically, your entire deck at instant speed sounds really nice. Imagine flashing in Padeem or Needle against Tron... drool.
Okay, sorry for how much I've been posting. Been in Paris with bad insomnia, but I think I may have just had a cool fusion idea.
Have you guys seen the eldrazi deck with serum powder/gemstone caverns? Super cool cause you can pitch your scourges to cavern/powder and still cast em.
What if we stapled a tez/chalice/dimir signet/animate artifact theme onto that?
The deck gives you a lot of looks at hands because of serum powder. Right now the deck is nearly viable because of how fast you can cast eldrazi, but adding a turn 2 tez element onto that could be a very cool piece of tech. I'll brew a list when I get back.
Edit: hella glad I got caverns for the tez deck when they were $2.50 they shot up to 35. Modern is cray.
Zahid is just a beater. If I had to play a beater that can be cast with the help of my artifacts, I'd pick Herald of Anguish over him any day.
Yup, but Zahid is easier on the mana :
- U VS BB
- 4 mana + 1 artifact VS 4 mana + 3 artifacts.
Herald has a higher ceiling but a lower floor. I 'member I never liked Herald because he was damn tough to cast, while the Djinn almost always hits the BF once you have 4 mana.
My poll was more about whether we want a beater in the SB VS artifact hate, over sthg like a PW or Ensoul effects.

I honestly dont know how that guy keeps winning with that list. Ive tried it and it seems like it just auto loses to humans and hatebears. also the whirs are super awkward because of how many non blue lands it plays. The meta i play in is quite different then online though.

I've been winning a lot with the UR tez deck. Humans is a pretty easy matchup, and all the dudes in my meta run the kessig malcontents - which is much harder for us to deal with. Sometimes you need to exp map for islands, sometimes you have to GQ your own land for another blue source (hopefully your land is darksteel). I don't know, it's a cool deck. Not for feint of heart.
